The Brown Buffalo X Huckberry Collab to Release a Stealthy Style Trio

In their first collaboration in 2022, Huckberry and The Brown Buffalo teamed up to produce a limited Huckberry edition of The Brown Buffalo’s flagship backpack, the iconic Concealpack (a favorite of ours), that sold out in hours. Now, they’re back with a trio of exclusive limited-edition releases: an upgraded Concealpack, a Porterpen Case, and a Dopp Kit, all in an exclusive MultiCam Black colorway, making a uniquely styled, well-rounded collection of highly functional and durable organizational solutions for the everyday carry enthusiast.

Leading the pack, the upgraded Concealpack Everyday Backpack 21L is meticulously crafted from high-performing DWR-coated X50 X-Pac with a 500D CORDURA face fabric. Its lining is DWR-coated VX21 X-Pac, and boasts reinforced critical points featuring Berry-compliant bar tacks to better safeguard your essentials during transit and in cases of drops. It maintains an ample 21L storage compartment, a secure, padded laptop compartment, and plenty of pockets for organization, easily accessible through the full clamshell opening design. The Porterpen Case and the Dopp Kit are also crafted from the same material as the Concealpack. The Porterpen Case boasts a 1L capacity, offering a compact yet robust solution for safeguarding writing materials and other small essentials, and the Dopp Kit comes with a 3L capacity, perfect for keeping your toiletries and other related materials protected and organized, perfectly rounding out the collection.

Each of these pieces represents the uncompromising quality and thoughtful design of these brands, offering functionality and durability without compromising on style, and when used together, they make a cohesive ensemble that ensures efficient organization.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Headlamps can be helpful in various situations, whether you’re out night fishing, setting up a campsite after dusk, hiking an unfamiliar path, or working in a dimly lit area. The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light adds some versatility to your standard headlamp because instead of having to wear it with a harness, you can clip it on your cap, attach it to your backpack, or wear it on your headband like a traditional headlamp while still enjoying hands-free lighting.

The NU11 has two types of light, white and red, with white light featuring two additional modes: high and low. In high mode, the NU11 can produce up to 150 lumens of brightness, reaching a distance of up to 55 yards. In low mode, the light produces up to 45 lumens of brightness, better suited for close-range tasks while saving battery power. The red light also has two modes: constant-on and flashing. The constant-on mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which is ideal for preserving your night vision or reading maps. The flashing mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which can serve as a signal or emergency light.

At only 1.45 oz, the Nitecore NU11 is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around on treks. Despite its small size, battery life remains impressive. It can last up to 30 hours in 4-lumen, constant-on red light mode, 6 hours in 45-lumen Low white light mode, and 2.5 hours on High white light mode. A handy indicator will let you know when it needs recharging, with a full charge achieved in only 2 hours via a fast-charging USB-C port.

One of the most useful features of the Nitecore NU11 is its infrared motion sensor, which you can activate by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. Once the sensor is on, you can turn the NU11 on and off with a simple wave of your hand within 10cm (about 4”) of the sensor. This feature comes in handy (or should I say, no-handy?) when your hands are dirty or occupied. You can also use the power button to adjust the brightness settings or switch to the red light mode.

What we like: Clip it on your cap for a direct and focused beam or attach it to your pack for a wider and diffused beam. This versatility and compact “clip-anywhere” feature makes it easy to recommend for your next adventure.

What to watch out for: The motion sensor can be accidentally triggered by other objects or movements, such as your hair or hat. Thankfully, you can switch the IR sensor off if you don’t need it by pressing the power button for 3 seconds.

Final verdict: The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light is a versatile and convenient clip-on light that you can attach to various surfaces, giving you hands-free lighting that significantly enhances your outdoor experience.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

A reliable and versatile outdoor knife can spell the difference between an enjoyable outdoor adventure and one you’d rather forget. The Gerber Terracraft is one such knife. Designed to handle any bushcraft challenge from fire starting to shelter building, this full tang fixed blade knife features an extra-thick 4.4” S30V steel blade that’s durable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to sharpen. Its drop point shape is as versatile as it gets for camping and bushcrafting, and its flat spine with a 90-degree edge can be effective for striking fire steel or scraping tinder.

Pulling it out of its American-made sheath, you’ll notice that this limited edition Terracraft’s handle is made of Micarta, a material known for its toughness, stability, and moisture resistance. It comes as a welcome alternative to the original Terracraft’s G-10 scales. The handle’s textured surface enhances grip and prevents slippage, while its contoured shape allows it to fit comfortably in the hand without hotspots even when using multiple grip styles. Micarta also feels more natural to the touch than G-10 and develops a patina unique to the user over time. To top (or end) things off, the handle’s pommel is hammer-ready and can be used to pound nails or stakes.

The Terracraft is part of the Gerber Reserve series, knives built in small batches in the USA to showcase Gerber’s craftsmanship and a more focused attention to detail for each knife they make. It was built from the ground up to best handle wet weather and demonstrate its usability in slippery conditions, making it the ideal choice for an outdoor knife when the environment becomes unpredictable.

What we like: While Gerber’s Terracraft line has always proven to be wilderness-ready, the Micarta handles make all the difference, especially in the wet.

What to watch out for: Gerber has multiple versions of their Terracraft, but this variant with Micarta handles is limited and exclusive to their website.

Final verdict: What more could you ask for from an outdoor knife? The Gerber Terracraft Micarta has the right combination of materials and solid build quality to provide years of service no matter where your adventures take you.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Cleaver-style folding and fixed-blade knives have recently attracted substantial attention in the EDC community. These knives feature a convenient, sharp blade shape, making otherwise rough cutting and chopping tasks easy. And as their name implies, they can also be used to accomplish food prep and culinary tasks, but some are better than others. The new Morakniv Rombo BlackBlade cleaver is designed to excel at both. Morakniv has years of experience making quality everyday carry bushcraft, camping, and survival knives. They created the Rombo as an all-in-one utility knife that can cut wood just as well as prep veggies on a wooden block.

Each Rombo BlackBlade cleaver is handmade in Sweden with a full-tang construction that makes it more sturdy than folding cleaver-style knives. The BlackBlade description comes from the PC coating on the 4.6” recycled Swedish stainless steel chopping blade. The ash wood scales augment the excellent handle geometry, making this a very ergonomic and comfortable knife to use whether you’re prepping food or accomplishing other outdoor tasks. And when you’re done with your work, the knife comes with a beautiful vegetable-tanned leather sheath designed to protect the knife in transit.

What we like: There are a lot of cleaver-style blades out there, but the Morakniv Rombo BlackBlade is designed to excel when you plan to use your knife to help prep food in the great outdoors.

What to watch out for: The fixed blade design can make it hard to EDC due to its size. Because it has a more traditional cleaver shape, it lacks a well-defined point. It will not pierce through material like more hybrid cleaver-style EDC designs.

Final verdict: Whether you dress game, chop vegetables, or need to cut a colossal burrito in half, the Morakniv Rombo BlackBlade cleaver is your tool of choice. Its heavy-duty and practical design make it a great outdoor knife as well.

S.H.A.D.O. Pack 24L

With a name that stands for and delivers the driving principles of Suspension, Haul, Access, Durability, and Organized, it’s no doubt that the award-winning S.H.A.D.O. Pack is one of PDW’s best-in-class backpacks. Its 24L frame is packed with features from harness to bottom handle, including dual reinforced clamshell main compartments for your laptop/tablet and EDC, bolstered by a top accessory pocket and dual side stretch water bottle pockets.

The bag also zips open flat, giving its internal admin pockets easy access. A network of adjustable and modular straps, clips, hooks, and cords ensure that external additions suspend securely and the S.H.A.D.O. remains comfortable to its user, even with a full haul.

The bag’s Invista CORDURA 500D construction provides a soft but resilient base to stack all of the S.H.A.D.O.’s many features for customizing and accommodating any EDC loadout, including a removable hi-vis EDCO admin/organization panel, 3-stage modular ToF hip belt, and a removable Gear Trap panel on the front with a laser-cut MOLLE-compatible array for endless modular options.

Road Warrior 60L Duffel

If you need an ultra-rugged duffel with the storage to pack for even the longest adventure, PDW’s Road Warrior is a 60L weather-resistant beast. It’s got enough space for well over five days’ worth of gear, with a spacious main compartment with a zippered clamshell top lid to store all of it in. The Road Warrior’s outer skin is made from 1000D Phthalate-free PVC tarpaulin which gives it its resilience, and its mesh, edge binding, webbing, zipper pulls, and Velcro loop all come in nylon.

Two padded shoulder straps can easily be attached/detached to suit your load, allowing you to carry the duffel in a backpack style, bolstered by two grab handles on each end and carry straps on top. For additional modularity, two rows of daisy-chain loops line the Road Warrior’s sides, and the bag also comes with a separate quick cinch bag for footwear or for separating laundry.

CC12

The CC12 is uniquely designed to work with a standard 12-gallon tote/bin, the roomy kind of durable storage you may already have in your garage or truck for overlanding. It provides extra protection through a 1000D Phthalate-free PVC tarpaulin construction while offering handles and attachment points for easy transport and identification. Its zippered main opening makes it easy to access a nested bin, with mesh pockets on the lid and two removable EDCO admin/organization panels for further organization. A padded handle, carry straps, and grab handles on each end give you options to easily manipulate even heavy loads, giving you grab-and-go capability at a moment’s notice. Last but not least, like on the Road Warrior, rows of daisy chain loops allow you extra attachments or labels to help you organize the contents of your bins.

EDTC

The EDTC is armor for your everyday backup gear. It’s a thermo-molded, clamshell-opening travel case with two removable die-cut EVA foam bumpers and divider that can fit an extra watch, knife, light, pair of sunglasses, or more within its semi-rigid 600D nylon oxford shell. The EDTC comes in a discreet Universal Field Gray with a molded PDW logo, but its interior is lined in hi-vis Flame Orange for ease of content identification even opening it up inside a dark bag. It’s an excellent option for protecting your essentials when packing and traveling for that extra peace of mind.

R.A.P.

For those smaller odds and ends that need extra protection or organization, a 3-pack of PDW’s R.A.P. (R.andom A.ccessory P.od) is a solid silicone bet. From charging cables, extra batteries that shouldn’t be rolling around loose, extra meds and other first aid gear, a secret stash of cash, ear protection–the sky is the limit. A simple squeeze front opening makes it easy to store, retrieve, and protect anything that will fit within the food-grade, non-toxic 4.50″ x 1.125″ x 4.00″ silicone construction. You can drop them into your pockets, bags, glove box, or even attach them to MOLLE-compatible webbing through the slots on the back. Each set comes in Universal Field Gray, Glow in the Dark, and Flame Orange.

Versa Bear

Traveling with liquids can be a pain, but it doesn’t have to be with PDW’s Versa Bear, a friendly set of food-grade silicone squeeze bottles with secure flip-top caps. They’re TSA carry-on approved with a 2.7oz/80ml volume, and make for great containers for anything from condiments to dopp kit essentials like liquid soap, shampoo, and sunscreen. The Versa Bear is inspired by the classic Gummy Bear and Honey Bear bottle shapes, and their friendliness extends past their design: PDW donates a portion of Versa Bear sales to various wildlife conservancies to help preserve the Honey Bee, a crucial member of the natural ecosystem. Note–while they’re versatile enough to store most liquids, be sure to check out the list of non-recommended items on the product page that may not be compatible with the Versa Bear’s silicone construction.

Low-temperature weather calls for high-quality gear, and Prometheus Design Werx has you covered with their latest releases of apparel and accessories. They pair their signature purpose-driven design language with silhouettes inspired by classic mountaineering and military issue gear, reimagined and reconstructed with modern performance materials and manufacturing. Whether it’s the natural quality of merino wool, the technical performance of a nylon-poly blend, or good ol’ trail-tested titanium, these essentials are made to take point on your next adventure.

CWO Full Zip Sweater

As autumn ushers in falling temperatures, it’s more important than ever to keep warm on the trail. The CWO (C.old W.eather O.perations) Full Zip Sweater provides full coverage and comfort thanks to its extra fine 18.5-micron merino wool composition. It’s a naturally performant material that regulates temperature and stays warm even when wet.

Other details like zippered hand pockets for secure storage, 2-way full-length YKK zippers for easy and reliable on/off, a chunky rib knit for durability, a high collar for sealing out wind, and reinforced shoulders to resist abrasion from pack straps make it an excellent outdoor midlayer for your next adventure. The CWO Full Zip Sweater takes design inspiration from classic military and alpinist silhouettes and is expertly crafted in Italy, available in your choice of Syth Black or OD Green.

CWO Full Zip Sweater – Syth Black

CWO Full Zip Sweater – OD Green

Guide Half Zip Sweater

The new Guide Sweater brings modern features and performance to a classic alpinist midlayer staple in a half-zip style. Like the CWO Sweater, the Guide Sweater also boasts 18.5-micron merino wool in a durable rib knit, reinforced with stretch nylon on high-wear and abrasion areas like the shoulders and elbows. Its YKK half zip lets you adjust the collar from a turtleneck configuration in colder, windier conditions down to an open, folded collar when you want to dump heat. The Guide comes in a classic Dark Heather Gray with black trim, making it a stylish fall essential on and off the trail.

Guide Sweater – Dark Heather Gray

Delta Cargo Pant EC T-Fit

Pocket space is a precious resource when it comes to EDC, and PDW’s Delta Cargo Pant EC T-Fit delivers it in spades and in style. This tailored fit field pant is made in the USA from PDW’s own nylon-poly softshell Expedition Cloth (EC) and finished with Japanese YKK hardware in three colors. The technical EC fabric boasts 4-way stretch and water resistance thanks to its DWR finish, making it ideal for everyday wear in cool weather, hard-use activities, and inclement weather alike.

The pants are proverbially bursting at the seams with thoughtful features EDCers can appreciate, like a dedicated tool slot, low-profile cargo pockets, a loop field for your RE collection, secure zippered back pockets, wide belt loops with delta ring attachments, multiple gear pockets, and reinforced knees for extra support during articulation.

A.G. Watch Cap

With a design heritage tracing back to the cold weather caps issued to USN Sailors, Seabees, Merchant Marines, and other service members during WWII, PDW’s “A Grade” caps are a cut above your regular beanie. Each cap is shaped and knitted in California with 100% merino sourced from a leading EU supplier, designed for an easy wear and even easier care and maintenance. The Watch Caps don’t just come in additional colors but true unique styles, including a heavyweight Dark Grey Marl, a 4-yarn Blood Stripe design, a DRB Team Z Edition honoring both Jacques Cousteau and his further fictional inspirations, as well as solid Syth Black and Vintage OD you can easily wear across seasons.

Ti-Line Insulated Ramen Bowl

It’s no surprise that titanium is a camp cookware favorite material thanks to its hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant properties in addition to being lightweight enough to carry as a camping essential. PDW’s Ti-Line Insulated Ramen Bowl is a premium realization of your favorite soup staple, upgraded in every way from form to function. Its Grade 5, 6AL-4V titanium construction is double-walled and vacuum-lined to keep your noodles warmer for longer, and comes with a special laser-etched Kraken Foodie graphic and PDW mottos on the bottom for that extra flair. Pair it with PDW’s Ti Takedown Chopsticks to complete the tasty titanium set.

All Terrain Collection

There is no shortage of bags to choose from when it comes to EDC, but they’re not all made the same. While most bags can protect your gear from a passing rain cloud, few offer a true waterproof solution. If you’re looking for true waterproofing, then the All Terrain line of packs from Prometheus Design Werx is for you. You don’t need to be rafting rapids every weekend to see the value in ensuring your gear stays dry. If you sail, fish, or relax oceanside from time to time, you know how difficult it is to keep your gear dry. Whether you’re looking for a daypack, a weekender, or something a little more robust for your next week-long adventure, you can trust any of these bags to keep the water away when it counts.

Prometheus Design Werx is known for going the extra mile to ensure top-notch quality. The bags mentioned here share a design language and high-quality materials that inspire confidence. Eco-friendly laser-cut 1000D RPET is on all bags to ensure a durable build you can trust even in the wettest environments. The combination of this material, an accompanying 600D RPET, YKK AquaGuard zippers, and high-frequency seam welding means that all these bags are IPX7-rated waterproof. So whether you get caught in a rainstorm or fall into a lake, you can trust your gear to stay dry.

One of our favorite aspects of the EDC philosophy is how our devices and gear are often streamlined, saving both space and time spent looking for our favorite tools and devices. Only a handful of companies understand this as well as VSSL. Already known for their modular outdoor kits for carrying essential gear, VSSL marks a world’s first by combining an insulated flask with a portable Bluetooth speaker.

The VSSL Insulated Flask uses the same design principles and materials that make VSSL gear crowd favorites. A stainless steel double-walled vacuum chamber keeps up to 8 oz of your preferred beverage at the perfect temperature, while an integrated flip carabiner makes it easy to attach to your pack’s clip or strap.

With a length of 9”, a diameter of 2”, and a weight of just 9.6 oz, the VSSL Insulated Flask is compact enough to carry around comfortably even on the most prolonged hiking expeditions. A patented endcap allows for two drinking methods – through the flask spout for quick sips and a fully opened lid when you need to hydrate more quickly.

VSSL knows music plays a significant role in making an outdoor excursion memorable. The Insulated Flask eliminates the need to bring a separate Bluetooth speaker along as it features a highly-durable, waterproof speaker as an endcap. These aren’t just your run-of-the-mill speakers, however. VSSL has partnered with Californian lifestyle audio brand Speaqua, known for its high-quality, go-anywhere waterproof Bluetooth speakers. The Speaqua endcap speaker on the Insulated Flask provides 5W of audio power for up to 5 hours and can be recharged on a USB-C connection.

Its scalloped base allows the speaker to sit upright without sacrificing sound quality. It uses the Bluetooth 5.0 standard, which helps not just to provide crystal clear audio but to improve battery efficiency as well. Multiple audio sources can connect to the speaker, so everyone on the trip with you gets to share their favorite tunes with the group. Like the rest of VSSL’s offerings, the Insulated Flask allows you to replace the speaker endcap with other modules like a compass or flashlight for added versatility on your trip.

With its premium materials, thoughtful design, and highly-innovative integrated speaker, the VSSL Insulated Flask significantly improves the outdoor camping experience. Add a soundtrack to your next adventure, and pick yours up at the link below.

For 2022, Gerber upgrades their Devour multi-tool with the titanium treatment, adding strength, rigidity, and hypoallergenic properties to the utensil compared to its original 7075 T6 aluminum construction. From outside appearances it looks like a regular camping spork, but it packs a multi-tool inserted into the handle that provides six different functions, including a can and bottle opener, a pry bar, a flathead screwdriver, and a scraping edge. It’s a pretty handy way to consolidate your carry whether you’re headed to the great outdoors or you’re looking for something better than a standard plastic take-away set when you’re opening up your lunch at work.

Specs

7.6“ length

1 ounce

Titanium

New multi-tool attachment

What we like: This is a well-designed tool that takes up little space in your pack while providing useful functions when you’re on the go on the trail or traveling to your next destination. The titanium treatment adds a premium feel to the tool, and it will appeal to anyone with an everyday carry set that revolves around having other titanium tools. The addition of an unobtrusive multi-tool that adds useful opening and consumption tools is a welcome addition as well as a step up from a basic spork.

What we don’t like: Usually when a knife or tool is given a titanium upgrade, it means that it ends up being lighter overall for EDC. The opposite is the case here. Fans of ultra-lightweight camping won’t appreciate the added heft as the original tool weighed less at 0.83 ounces. When you absolutely need the lightest option, this won’t be it. For everyone else, you’ll have to make the decision as to whether the added strength of the tool is worth the added weight to your everyday carry.

If you’re in the market for an EDC spork that can do more than help you dig into some grub away from home, the Devour Ti might be your best option. It’s certainly a step up from a disposable utensil, and it looks great too. Check it out in your choice of colorway to best fit your style and kit at the link below.

As we head into Spring, we can look forward to better weather, more outdoor adventures, and fresh gear to bring along for the ride. To tackle your campground tasks, Gerber whipped up their new Stake Out multi-tool. True to its name, this pocket-sized multi-tool features a specialized hook for pulling out tent stakes when it’s time to pack up and head out. A well-selected set of tools round out its functionality, making it an ideal camping companion to complement your outdoor carry.

Specs

11 tools

Outdoor and camping ready

Built-in carabiner

4.5″ length

The Stake Out shows some familiar design language to its more general purpose EDC brother, the Armbar. It’s closer in design to a regular folder or Swiss Army knife than your pliers-based butterfly style multi-tools. But given its use case as a specialized tool for camping and outdoor adventures, this makes sense. Compared to other tools in the outdoor space, the Stake Out might offer “just enough” functionality without weighing you down. It’s clear that for some campers and backpackers, optimizing for weight is paramount. The Stake Out isn’t without its competition in this space, but existing options like the Leatherman Signal may be more than some EDCers need for basic camping tasks like setting up, prepping food, and packing out.

What we like: Design-wise, this boasts an overall well-thought out toolset to nail its camp-focused specialization. I appreciate the tweezers being on the larger side and the hi-vis orange retrieval endcap makes this completely removable tool less likely to get lost. The scissors are blunted at the ends to prevent accidental poking, while the large awl can cover that functionality more deliberately. The namesake stake puller is a unique addition that lets it stand out from its peers, as few other tools offer a hook for this purpose and in this size (the Victorinox hooks are smaller overall). Even if you don’t use it for pulling out stakes, it can help lug around heavy grocery bags or something similar. Lastly, the carabiner clip is a sensible carry method for easy access in an outdoor adventure scenario. Lastly, the blade does lock up into the frame, which is a welcome feature.

What we don’t like: It’s always tricky to not only pack in a bunch of functions into a tool, but also make sure they’re implemented in a usable and practical way. One thing that stands out is the placement of the file on the outer edge of the tool. It seems too close to the other deployable tools and depending on the angle you’re filing, they may get in your way. Another minor complaint is the blade steel is probably not going to come close to any dedicated EDC folding knife, so it’s not likely to fully replace both your multi-tool and pocket knife if you’re trying to keep things super light on the trail. Finally, not all of the tools lock, which may be disappointing to some. But given the tool’s smaller size and the scope of tasks it’s meant to do, fully locking tools for every function might be a case of overengineering to the point of inconvenience anyway.

Overall, it seems to be another welcome option for those looking to build out a camping EDC without needing to commit to the bulk of several disparate dedicated tools. For the size, price, and functionality it promises, it seems like an easy decision.

If staying focused at work is getting harder and harder these days, we don’t blame you. It is summertime, after all. And when it’s looking so nice out, you can’t help but want to leave those e-mails unread, stretch your legs, and get out there.

We can’t think of a better way to do that than by going camping. Just imagine: you and your best buds, all geared up, taking in everything nature has to offer. Finally, a chance to relax and recharge.

Better yet, it’s a great opportunity to use your favorite EDC gear or a reason to pick up something new. If you’ve been meaning to put together an outdoors kit, it can be tempting to keep collecting gear until you have this huge, expansive, all-bases-covered loadout. But for weekends away and casual camping excursions, you’d probably be better off with a setup that’s easier to carry and still able to get the job done.

Your New Outdoor Companion

The multi-tool experts at Leatherman recently released a new tool designed specifically for that purpose: the Signal. It’s another entry in their line-up of full-sized plier-based tools, packing a total of 19 functions in a DLC-coated stainless steel frame that won’t weigh you down.

With the inclusion of a saw, combo-edge blade, can opener, and hammer, the Signal makes for a suitable companion for your outdoor adventures. It even includes some last-ditch survival features too, like a ferro rod firestarter and safety whistle.

And in true Leatherman fashion, it’s got a complement of features for day-to-day utility: pliers, 154CM steel wirecutters, bit drivers, wrenches, a bottle opener, a carabiner, and a pocket clip. You can check it out in full detail at the link below.

So You Want to Go Camping…

Remember, it’s not always enough to just have the right gear. You’ve got to know how to use it, too.

If you’re new to camping or don’t do it as much as you’d like, it can be intimidating to get set up properly. So grab your gear, and we’ll cover the rest. Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you go camping that’ll really save you some headache and stress.

1. Pitch a Tent the Right Way for an Amazing Night’s Sleep

Before you set up your tent, pick a spot that’s flat and clear of roots or debris. You’ll be doing your back a huge favor, and it’ll keep your tent from tearing on something sharp.

Next, lay down ground tarp to keep the moisture out, and secure those stakes deep into the ground. It’s a small but important step, and the hammer end on the Signal is especially handy for this.

2. How to Start a Fire Without a Lighter or Matches

Matches can get wet, and lighters run out of fuel eventually. Here’s how to do it with just a ferro rod firestarter, like the one on the Signal. First, gather some tinder, a material that can catch a spark and ignite, like some nearby dry grass or birch bark (as a backup, you can bring a few cotton balls along).

Get a firm grip on your ferrocerium rod in one hand and a striker in the other. Use deliberate strokes to scrape sparks off the rod, and don’t rush it. Repeat until your tinder catches, build the fire by adding your kindling (small twigs, bark, etc.) to it, then bask in the triumphant glory of your new flame.

3. Use the Right Tool for the Job

Use your knife for slicing, saw for paring down wood, and a proper screwdriver for turning screws (and light prying if you must)—not your knife tip.

It might seem obvious, but it’s worth emphasizing: treat your tools well, and they’ll serve you well in return. When you’re out camping, you have to make do with the limited tools you have with you, so it’s important to keep them in top shape. The Signal has plenty of tools optimized for specific outdoors purposes for this reason.

We don’t mean to baby your gear, just don’t abuse them so they’ll work reliably if you ever find yourself in a pinch. If you do happen to dull your blade, the Signal has its own knife sharpener to get it back to working condition.

4. The Ingredients of an Incredible Campfire Cookout

You’ll want a hearty meal you can cook up with limited refrigeration and an open fire—we suggest canned foods and cured meats for this. If you’re bringing a cooler, pick up a block of dry ice to keep perishable foods nice and fresh.

Leave the kitchen utensils at home, your EDC blade and a can opener (like the one in your multitool) are really all you need to get a meal ready.

Pro tip: pre-cut any vegetables and meats at home and store them in a resealable bag. This way you’re spending more time eating and less time prepping.

5. Have Fun, Be Safe!

Pay close attention to the wildlife near your campsite too. The last thing you want is an hungry bear crashing through camp, a raccoon making off with your bacon, or a deer rummaging through your vegetables.

If possible, set up your camp kitchen at least 100 feet away from where you’re sleeping. If you’re car camping, store garbage and food right in your car (but remember to close the windows!). Not near your vehicle? Rig up a bear bag with a duffel bag and some paracord. Throw your food inside, sling the line over a tree branch and make sure to hoist it at least 10 feet off the ground and four feet from the trunk of the tree.

Now you’re all set up to do what you love, whether it’s hiking, fishing, or cooking and eating. Just be sure to stay prepared with the right gear and surrounded by your favorite company. Happy camping.

What’s your favorite camping memory? Whether it’s why you love to get outdoors, some sage advice for camping newbies, or your best campground experience, we’d love to know in the comments section below!

As the weather begins to get nicer (FINALLY!), we tend to spend more and more time in the great outdoors. Camping season is upon us so our friends over at Huckberry assembled a list of essentials that will help you with all aspects of setting up camp and making the most of it while you’re there.

Light My Fire Titanium Spork
Do mother Earth a favor and leave the plastic forks behind. This titanium spork from Light My Fire will keep your hands clean through all of your campfire meals. The polished surface and inert metal construction means that it won’t leave a metallic taste in your mouth. ($26)

Petzl Tikkina Headlamp
Using a headlamp keeps your hands free to gather more wood to keep the fire going while navigating the terrain. Whether you’re caving, climbing, or simply trying to find your way back to the car, the Petzl headlamp will light the way. Several lighting modes and brightnesses ensure that every situation will be properly lit. ($20)

Stone River Gear Firestarter and Knife Sharpener
This two-in-one sharpener and fire starter is great at pulling double duty when you want to keep your camping gear streamlined. A magnesium fire starter rod and a diamond sharpener will get the fire going and keep your camp knife hair-popping sharp. The Stone River tool is wrapped in paracord and includes a quick release carabiner for easy retrieval. ($20)

Nature Bandanas Animal Facts Bandanas
Not only do these bandanas keep the sweat off your face, but they also let you know which animals to avoid. While a field guide to animals and plants is a great thing to have on a camping trip, it’s certainly not as easy to carry as a bandana. These bandanas are made of 100% cotton for maximum softness and absorption. ($23 for 2)

Gerber Gear 39 Series Sheath Folder Knife
This 3” blade from Gerber is sure to come in handy on the trail. The fine edge drop point blade and sleek nickel-plated zinc handle looks handsome and delivers in terms of performance. Trim back some brush, prepare a freshly caught fish, or practice your whittling skills by the campfire. The lock-back mechanism will keep the blade in place and is easy to close up when it’s time to go. Included with the knife is a handsome leather sheath that nicely compliments the aesthetic of the knife. ($111)

K&M Long Brass Match Case
Starting and maintaining a fire is one of the most important outdoor tasks. The K&M match case protects your matches from moisture, keeping them ready to strike when needed. Handmade brass construction with a knurled grip and a water-tight screw-on compass top add extra utility and durability to this long-lasting match case. ($30)
