It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Headlamps can be helpful in various situations, whether you’re out night fishing, setting up a campsite after dusk, hiking an unfamiliar path, or working in a dimly lit area. The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light adds some versatility to your standard headlamp because instead of having to wear it with a harness, you can clip it on your cap, attach it to your backpack, or wear it on your headband like a traditional headlamp while still enjoying hands-free lighting.

The NU11 has two types of light, white and red, with white light featuring two additional modes: high and low. In high mode, the NU11 can produce up to 150 lumens of brightness, reaching a distance of up to 55 yards. In low mode, the light produces up to 45 lumens of brightness, better suited for close-range tasks while saving battery power. The red light also has two modes: constant-on and flashing. The constant-on mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which is ideal for preserving your night vision or reading maps. The flashing mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which can serve as a signal or emergency light.

At only 1.45 oz, the Nitecore NU11 is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around on treks. Despite its small size, battery life remains impressive. It can last up to 30 hours in 4-lumen, constant-on red light mode, 6 hours in 45-lumen Low white light mode, and 2.5 hours on High white light mode. A handy indicator will let you know when it needs recharging, with a full charge achieved in only 2 hours via a fast-charging USB-C port.

One of the most useful features of the Nitecore NU11 is its infrared motion sensor, which you can activate by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. Once the sensor is on, you can turn the NU11 on and off with a simple wave of your hand within 10cm (about 4”) of the sensor. This feature comes in handy (or should I say, no-handy?) when your hands are dirty or occupied. You can also use the power button to adjust the brightness settings or switch to the red light mode.

What we like: Clip it on your cap for a direct and focused beam or attach it to your pack for a wider and diffused beam. This versatility and compact “clip-anywhere” feature makes it easy to recommend for your next adventure.

What to watch out for: The motion sensor can be accidentally triggered by other objects or movements, such as your hair or hat. Thankfully, you can switch the IR sensor off if you don’t need it by pressing the power button for 3 seconds.

Final verdict: The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light is a versatile and convenient clip-on light that you can attach to various surfaces, giving you hands-free lighting that significantly enhances your outdoor experience.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Fixed-blade knives have one significant advantage over their folding cousins: without an opening mechanism, they’re always ready for you to get to work. Their size and relative weight usually relegate them to dedicated outdoors, hunting, and survival roles, but knives like the SOG Ether FX flip that script.

The SOG Ether FX is skeletonized to reduce its weight to 2.1oz compared to a traditional hunter’s knife with brass bolsters and wood inlays, which can weigh much more. Instead, it comes with removable G-10 handle scales. Gone is a traditional fixed camping knife’s standard bulky leather belt sheath. In its place is a modern Kydex sheath with a secure belt loop and compatibility with SOG’s Universal Mounting System, which lets you attach it to bags, packs, and other accessories.

At the heart of the SOG Ether FX is the full-tang CPM S35VN stainless steel blade. S35VN is a quality blade steel that gets sharp and remains sharp enough for confident everyday carry use. With an overall length of 7.1” and a blade length of 3.1”, it’s perfect for everyday carry when you prefer a knife you don’t have to fiddle with to use.

What we like: The skeletonized design of the SOG Ether FX and the secure Kydex sheath make this a stellar everyday carry option for anyone wanting to add a fixed-blade knife to their ensemble.

What to watch out for: The bright orange G-10 handle scales make this knife easy to find in your bag or pack. The scales are removable if the orange aesthetic does not work for you. You can then wrap the handle with the material of your choice or leave it bare to save even more weight.

Final verdict: Smartly designed knives like the SOG Ether FX make carrying a fixed-blade knife easier, even when you’re not a regular outdoors person.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

A reliable and versatile outdoor knife can spell the difference between an enjoyable outdoor adventure and one you’d rather forget. The Gerber Terracraft is one such knife. Designed to handle any bushcraft challenge from fire starting to shelter building, this full tang fixed blade knife features an extra-thick 4.4” S30V steel blade that’s durable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to sharpen. Its drop point shape is as versatile as it gets for camping and bushcrafting, and its flat spine with a 90-degree edge can be effective for striking fire steel or scraping tinder.

Pulling it out of its American-made sheath, you’ll notice that this limited edition Terracraft’s handle is made of Micarta, a material known for its toughness, stability, and moisture resistance. It comes as a welcome alternative to the original Terracraft’s G-10 scales. The handle’s textured surface enhances grip and prevents slippage, while its contoured shape allows it to fit comfortably in the hand without hotspots even when using multiple grip styles. Micarta also feels more natural to the touch than G-10 and develops a patina unique to the user over time. To top (or end) things off, the handle’s pommel is hammer-ready and can be used to pound nails or stakes.

The Terracraft is part of the Gerber Reserve series, knives built in small batches in the USA to showcase Gerber’s craftsmanship and a more focused attention to detail for each knife they make. It was built from the ground up to best handle wet weather and demonstrate its usability in slippery conditions, making it the ideal choice for an outdoor knife when the environment becomes unpredictable.

What we like: While Gerber’s Terracraft line has always proven to be wilderness-ready, the Micarta handles make all the difference, especially in the wet.

What to watch out for: Gerber has multiple versions of their Terracraft, but this variant with Micarta handles is limited and exclusive to their website.

Final verdict: What more could you ask for from an outdoor knife? The Gerber Terracraft Micarta has the right combination of materials and solid build quality to provide years of service no matter where your adventures take you.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

When you think of Victorinox, you probably have their trusty Swiss Army Knives (SAKs) in mind. But they also make a line of adventure fixed blades, and their newest knife is called the Venture. It’s a multi-purpose fixed-blade EDC knife built for the great outdoors and all points in between. It features a 4.75” Sandvik 14C28N steel blade and durable full-tang construction.

Unlike a folding (usually non-locking) SAK, the Venture features an always-ready fixed blade design with a sheath for safe carry convenience. On the Pro version specifically, that sheath integrates a ballpoint pen, a pair of tweezers, and a fire starter, making it highly versatile both on and off the field. Its non-slip polymer handle also conceals a bow-drill pivot, making it easy to use to help start a fire, especially in conjunction with the firestarter it comes with.

What we like: The Venture‘s durable and reliable fixed-blade construction and the convenient EDC and survival tools built into the Pro’s sheath make it an excellent choice for all-around everyday carry use.

What to watch out for: If you’re not a fan of the extra tools built into the sheath, you can opt for the regular Venture version of this reliable fixed blade, which removes them for added weight savings and simplicity.

Final verdict: If you’re in the market for a quality everyday carry fixed-blade knife with added survival and adventure utility, the Victorinox Venture is a solid choice from one of our favorite tool brands.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The problem with lightweight bags is that they can be too fragile. If you’re looking to pack light but still get through the scrapes of everyday life, Mystery Ranch is one of your best bets. Their decades of experience and decades-long lifetime warranty for craftsmanship puts their bags near or at the top of hard-use practicality. And they’ve teamed up with our friends at Huckberry to make the Greenbelt Hybrid backpack, which features comfortable, lightweight carry and ease of access second to none.

The Greenbelt features 30 liters of capacity and a rip-open design that lets you get complete access to the interior organization spaces of the bag. There’s a padded laptop and tablet space for your tech essentials and smaller organizational pockets for pens and stationery. The lightweight ripstop nylon construction creates an excellent middle ground between durability and heft, and the ballistic nylon exterior panel helps with abrasion resistance.

With its exterior elastic webbing and water bottle pockets, this bag works well when you take it to the great outdoors after a long workweek. And the classic green and brown look complements the heritage-inspired look well. Plus, with its water-resistant coating, you can keep your everyday carry essentials packed inside high and dry from the rain.

What we like: With its smart looks and versatile opening, the Greenbelt Hybrid backpack is a convenient everyday carry bag whether you’re out touching grass or dreaming about doing that from your office.

What to watch out for: We wish this bag took advantage of Mystery Ranch’s hallmark tri-zip design, but its more unstructured nature lends itself to the more traditional front panel and lid mechanism featured on the Greenbelt Hybrid.

Final verdict: This Mystery Ranch bag can be found exclusively at the Huckberry store, and if you’re looking for a lightweight yet ultra-durable bag that will last you for decades to come, look no further than the Greenbelt Hybrid 30L.

The post The 15 Best Water Bottles in 2024 appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
You might wonder if investing in a high-quality water bottle is worth it. After all, water already comes packaged, and you could find cheaper options if you want to fill your own bottle. However, that might not be a good trade. If you opt for a standard bottle, you’ll likely end up with a lukewarm beverage that might even come with unwanted tastes. It could also be clunky to handle and carry.

But most importantly, we all know where millions of plastic bottles end up: in the ocean. Even without other drawbacks, this alone should make everyone reconsider their choice.

Personally, investing in an insulated stainless steel water bottle has proven to be a game-changer. It serves as a reliable, reusable container for any occasion. Whether I want to carry hot coffee or ice-cold water, my stainless steel bottle ensures freshness, much like a thermos. The best part? I get to do my bit to preserve the environment. Here’s a rundown of some of the best water bottles I’ve come across.

Whenever I go hiking, camping, or traveling, clean drinking water is at the top of my priority list. The LifeStraw Peak Solo Water Filter brings some much-needed peace of mind as a portable water filtration device that can protect you from harmful bacteria, microplastics, parasites, silt, and sand in your drinking water, making it an essential addition to your travel gear.

One of its most significant advantages is its ultra-lightweight design, weighing just 1.7 ounces. You can easily carry it at only 5.1” tall in your backpack or emergency kit. The standard 28mm threading on the filter makes it compatible with most water bottles, and its leak-proof top and bottom cap prevents any spillage. It also comes with a custom-threaded backwash syringe and a user manual to make cleaning the filter a breeze. The Solo’s water filter has an impressive flow rate of 3L/min, allowing you to fill up a 1-liter bottle in just 20 seconds. This makes it perfect for hikers, campers, and travelers who are always on the move.

The key feature of the LifeStraw Peak Solo is a membrane microfilter that utilizes hollow fiber technology. It removes 99.999% of bacteria (including E.coli and Salmonella), 99.9% of protozoan parasites (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium), and microplastics, silt, sand, and cloudiness from water sources. The LifeStraw filter can clean up to 2000 liters of water before needing a replacement; just remember to discard the first 0.5 liters of the filtered water as it may contain loose carbon from the filter.

Since it’s made with premium, durable, 50% post-consumer recycled BPA-free plastic, it’s an excellent choice for frequent travelers who want something that’s both reliable and responsible. What’s more, with every purchase of a LifeStraw water filter, a child in need receives safe drinking water for a year. This is an incredible initiative by LifeStraw to help underprivileged communities have access to clean water, and is a great way to give back while investing in a product that can make a difference.

What I like: Besides its EDC-friendly size I can keep in my pockets, drop into, or attach to any bag, its high filtration efficiency and fast flow rate make it convenient for on-the-go use.

What to watch out for: The LifeStraw can’t be used for filtering sea water or chemically contaminated water.

Final verdict: The LifeStraw Peak Solo Water Filter is a must-have for any frequent traveler, backpacker, camper, or outdoor enthusiast. Its compact size makes it a no-brainer addition to any survival or outdoors kit, ready to use for staying hydrated on your next adventure.

Nothing tests your tools quite like an outdoor adventure. Whether camping out in the woods, taking on a challenging hiking trail, or exploring the wilderness, the challenges you’ll face in a survival scenario demand the highest quality tools made from the most durable materials. Prometheus Design Werx (or PDW) is a company that prides itself on designing and manufacturing high-quality multi-purpose performance apparel, equipment, and EDC tools, and the team behind it is passionate about the outdoors. Let’s take a closer look at some items we think should have a place in your survival kit.

FD Pouch

The FD Pouch or Forage Dump Pouch is a modular pouch with three separate pouch types that you can swap out to suit your use case. Each pouch has a capacity of 13 liters and can be mounted on any MOLLE platform with PDW’s MOLLE Compatible Array and optional HAL1 Straps.

The first pouch is a Canvas Pouch Module, made with organic undyed cotton canvas. It’s the perfect container for foraging wild edibles, medicinal plants, pine resin, tinder, and other natural materials. The second pouch is the Mesh Pouch Module, made with a polyester mesh and a durable 140D nylon top skirt. If you plan to store wet items, this is the pouch you’ll want to take with you since the mesh bottom allows liquid to seep through. The third pouch is the 500D CORDURA Module, which is both durable and waterproof. Use it as a magazine dump pouch or for items you want to be protected from harsh weather.

Each pouch has its own adjustable shoulder strap and a one-handed shock cord cinch top skirt, allowing you to close the opening easily.

WUULF Pack 24L

The Wilderness Utility Urban Lay Flat Pack or WUULF Pack combines the classic alpine style, top-loading summit assault pack design with some added modern touches. This 24L pack features a unique 2-way center front zipper that provides easy access to 90% of the main compartment without opening the top lid. Built with 500D CORDURA, the WUULF Pack boasts life-long durability while maintaining a light weight of just 1.43 kg.

PDW has gone the extra mile to ensure the WUULF Pack’s longevity with innovative design and material choices. Instead of using less durable stretch fabrics used in most packs’ water bottle pockets, they used a new double-gusseted design using the 500D and adjustable shock cord which you can replace when worn out. The WUULF Pack also features alloy tension hooks for the top lid closure and compression straps instead of the typical nylon or acetal type so that main point buckles wouldn’t be vulnerable to cracking when stepped on against rocks.

SHADO Pack 24L

The SHADO Pack 24L is a fully-loaded mid-size pack designed to accommodate a variety of conditions both in and out of the wilderness. SHADO stands for Suspension, Haul, Access, Durability, Organized—the guiding principles PDW used to govern its design. Its dual zipper opening gives you direct access to its internal admin compartments so you can organize all your items quickly and easily, even when the pack is laid flat.

It also features convenient mounting points for bike helmets or MOLLE pouches and dual reinforced clamshell main compartments for your laptop/tablet and EDC, bolstered by a top accessory pocket and dual side stretch water bottle pockets.

It’s made from Invista CORDURA 500D and custom-milled 140D nylon/spandex, which gives you some much-needed confidence when faced with bad weather. The SHADO Pack is designed for comfort, too, with a sternum strap ladder, removable waist belt, and a ventilated lumbar pad for those long treks.

Tool Pouch

The Prometheus Design Werx Tool Pouch is designed to store all the essential gear you want accessible at all times while keeping them out of your pockets. The exterior features a QR SR buckle for secure closure and an adjustable webbing strap for cinching when necessary. The pleated construction allows the pouch to accommodate many small items, such as folding knives up to 5” long, multi-tools, flashlights, monoculars, and more. The MCA (Molle Compatible Array) on the back allows you to mount it on pack straps or utility belts, ensuring your gear is always within easy reach. Its Invista CORDURA 500D construction guarantees durability, with 140D ripstop nylon lining the interior.

Ti-SAK Scales

The 58mm Victorinox Mini Champ is a fan favorite for a reason—it’s one of the most versatile SAKs around, with an assortment of tools ranging from a Phillips screwdriver to a built-in pen. These precision-machined titanium SAK Scales are high-grade premium scales meant to be permanent DIY replacements for the factory plastic Cellidor scales used in the 58mm Mini Champ. It’s a worthwhile upgrade, too, featuring a dive-watch grade glow-in-the-dark dot inlay that makes it easy to find in low-light conditions and a purposeful tactile grip and handling improvement to the otherwise smooth surface.

Two designs are available: a 5-fullered pattern and a topo map pattern replicating the topographic lines from a USGS 7.5′ map. Both designs take the Mini Champ to the next level in form and function.

]]>
It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Cleaver-style folding and fixed-blade knives have recently attracted substantial attention in the EDC community. These knives feature a convenient, sharp blade shape, making otherwise rough cutting and chopping tasks easy. And as their name implies, they can also be used to accomplish food prep and culinary tasks, but some are better than others. The new Morakniv Rombo BlackBlade cleaver is designed to excel at both. Morakniv has years of experience making quality everyday carry bushcraft, camping, and survival knives. They created the Rombo as an all-in-one utility knife that can cut wood just as well as prep veggies on a wooden block.

Each Rombo BlackBlade cleaver is handmade in Sweden with a full-tang construction that makes it more sturdy than folding cleaver-style knives. The BlackBlade description comes from the PC coating on the 4.6” recycled Swedish stainless steel chopping blade. The ash wood scales augment the excellent handle geometry, making this a very ergonomic and comfortable knife to use whether you’re prepping food or accomplishing other outdoor tasks. And when you’re done with your work, the knife comes with a beautiful vegetable-tanned leather sheath designed to protect the knife in transit.

What we like: There are a lot of cleaver-style blades out there, but the Morakniv Rombo BlackBlade is designed to excel when you plan to use your knife to help prep food in the great outdoors.

What to watch out for: The fixed blade design can make it hard to EDC due to its size. Because it has a more traditional cleaver shape, it lacks a well-defined point. It will not pierce through material like more hybrid cleaver-style EDC designs.

Final verdict: Whether you dress game, chop vegetables, or need to cut a colossal burrito in half, the Morakniv Rombo BlackBlade cleaver is your tool of choice. Its heavy-duty and practical design make it a great outdoor knife as well.

The post The Top 10 Best Hunting Knives for Any Game in 2024 appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
The first everyday carry knife carried by someone in the field was likely a hunting knife. While the blades of old have fallen by the wayside, the venerable hunting knife still has a place in modern EDC usage. That’s especially the case if you hunt or fish regularly. But the practical and convenient design of hunting knives makes them a solid choice even if you don’t stalk down the food you put on your table. The best hunting knives have quality blade steel and a focus on design fundamentals that allow them to pull dual-duty as outdoor knives. And you can rely on these blades to get you through an emergency.

Most of the best hunting knives feature a reliable fixed-blade construction with a full tang that can take more abuse than a folder. Those hunting knives that opt to keep a folding design have an overbuilt locking mechanism that can keep up with rough use. Unlike most tactical and survival knives, the best hunting knives feature strong ergonomics because they’re built around you breaking down and preparing meat after a kill. Hunting knives are meant to be used and relied upon constantly. The best examples feature a quality steel stainless or tool steel blade with a sharp edge that can cut through hide and fillet freshly-caught fish. And some of the best modern hunting knives leverage premium materials to create lightweight knives that perform above their weight class.

The Best Hunting Knives

Hunting knives are an essential EDC companion out in the field. While you’re likely not hunting with only a hunting knife in hand, having one is critical to being successful while you hunt or fish. Aside from the more obvious tasks of cutting a deer open to dress it or preparing it for later, a hunting knife comes in handy when setting up baits or traps. The best hunting knives also work well for tasks an outdoor camping or survival knife can do. And even if you aren’t a hunter or outdoors enthusiast, a hunting knife’s unique design and aesthetic appeal can find a home in your EDC. As with other everyday carry knives, there are many options out there, and in this guide, we will introduce you to some of the best hunting knives you can buy right now.

We know that finding the best knife can be an adventure in and of itself, and we’re here to answer any questions you might have about EDCing a hunting knife.

How do you sharpen a hunting knife?

While you can use a sharpening stone or whetstone to sharpen a hunting knife, a pull-through sharpener can work in a pinch. You can also opt for a machine sharpener like a Work Sharp if you’re looking for an easy option with versatility and highly-repeatable results regardless of the blade shape.

What is the best hunting knife brand?

Some of the best hunting knife company brands include Buck Knives, Spyderco, Morakniv, Gerber, KA-BAR, Benchmade, Kershaw, CRKT, and more. Be on the lookout for knife companies that stand behind their hunting gear with good lifetime warranties for peace of mind.

What makes a good hunting knife?

A good hunting knife has quality steel for a sharp blade and a design with good handle material that makes it easy to cut meat, poultry, and fish after a catch. Good hunting knives feature either a fixed blade construction with jimping. For a folding blade, a good camp knife comes with a quality locking and folding mechanism that you can rely on.

Can I carry a hunting knife on my belt?

You can carry a hunting knife on your belt with the right sheath. You can find a nylon sheath or one made of Kydex with good retention on your blade. If a traditional look is important to you, leather sheaths are great options too.

How should I care for or clean a hunting knife?

Because you tend to use a backcountry hunting and skinning knife for cutting through meat and small game, you will want to regularly wash your knife with soap and hot water to ensure it stays sanitary. This is especially the case near the handle, as you don’t want rotting food material in direct contact with your hands. You should also thoroughly dry your hunting knives to prevent rust and corrosion. Even if your blade says it’s stainless steel, you should assist its corrosion resistance by taking good care of it. Treating your hunting knife with food-safe oil is essential because you will end up eating the result of your work.

Fixed Blade FAQ

What’s a “fixed blade,” and why would I carry one instead of a folding knife?

The short answer is that a fixed blade is a knife that does fold into the handle. With your typical folding knives, folding into the handle is a protective measure that keeps the blade tucked away when the knife is not in use. Since fixed blades do not fold, they usually come with sheaths to protect the user from the blade.

Using a fixed blade has a few distinct advantages over a folding knife. For one, there are no moving parts, meaning they won’t break when you need them most. There are also plenty of regulations against folding knives, depending on where you live. You should double-check your local carry laws, but a smaller fixed blade can be a legal option for you. You can free up pocket space while still covering your bases with a practical tool you can rely on.

What material do fixed blade knives come in?

Just like folding knives, fixed blades come in all kinds of metals and materials. A typical metal you’ll find is D2 stainless steel, thanks to its edge retention. Full-tang blades can also sometimes have rugged handles and jimping on the spine to allow for better ergonomics when using the knife.

What size knife is best for EDC?

The best-sized knife depends on your use case, but for most people, a knife blade less than 3” long is likely the most practical. Not just because that’s a great size for everyday cutting tasks but also because it abides by most local laws.

What fixed-blade knife do Navy SEALs use?

Navy SEALs carry different gear depending on the country, and there is no single correct answer. Searching around the web reveals one of the options to be the Ontario 497 Mark III.

Can you EDC a fixed blade?

Yes! Depending on where you live, it might be a better legal option, but it’s always good to check your local knife laws.

What are the benefits of owning a fixed-blade knife?

A fixed-blade knife has all kinds of benefits over folding blades, the most prominent being that since there are no moving parts, it’s tough to have one break on you. On top of that, they’re usually legal to carry if they’re under a certain length.

What color fixed blade knife is best?

The best color for a fixed blade is usually black or orange, depending on whether you want a knife that can go unnoticed or is easy to spot in a pinch.

What to Look For in an Outdoor Watch

  • Battery life: Whether it’s in your phone or in a watch, GPS is a power-hungry ordeal. The last thing you want is to be two days into your hike and have your watch die on you. A battery that will last until you’re back in the safety of your own home is arguably the most important thing to pay attention to.

  • Safety features: If you’re looking into tough, rugged, outdoor GPS watches, chances are you don’t plan on using them while sitting at a desk. Running tough routes, summiting a new peak, and backpacking your way through a trail are all worthy goals, but that’s not an excuse for being ill-equipped. A watch that will alert another person and automatically send out your location when things go south can be the difference between a good experience and a terrible one.

  • Activity tracking: If you have a goal and are taking your training seriously, you should track your progress and figure out how to optimize your efforts. These watches all double as excellent fitness trackers. Make sure the watch you choose can give you the information you need to hit your targets and achieve results.

  • Durability: No matter the activity, you want a watch that can take a beating. Make sure that the watch you pick has the toughness to keep up with you, whether waterproof or shockproof. All of the watches on this list have great water resistance, so you won’t have to worry about that the next time you go for a swim.

  • Price: Watches are one of those things that you could spend as much money as you have on just one. So, pick a budget that makes sense for you before deciding on one. The more expensive watches will have more satellite system compatibility for better accuracy and tougher build quality. Still, if you’re only looking to track your workouts and get important notifications, you don’t need to spend too much.

  • Comfort: Even though these are tiny computers you strap to your wrist, they’re still watches. That means you want one that’s going to be comfortable to wear all day or even all week. The most expensive watch doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most comfortable. Look for watches with straps made of comfortable materials or straps that are easy to replace.

  • Style: Unless you have a box full of watches, chances are that if you spend a few hundred dollars on one of these watches, you will be wearing it fairly often. While style isn’t the most important factor when considering a GPS watch, you shouldn’t ignore it. Look for a watch that will mesh with your everyday lifestyle.

  • User-Friendly: Keep in mind that while all of these GPS watches are more sophisticated than the computers that first sent humans to the moon, they’re not user-friendly. Regardless of your watch, there will be a learning curve. They all have menus and submenus that you’ll have to learn to navigate, along with apps and services that you’ll need to connect to. Not to mention the plethora of available metrics once you dive into any accompanying apps.

Other GPS Watches to Consider

  • Garmin Forerunner 955: If you want one of the best running smartwatches out there, the Garmin Forerunner 955 is a new offering from the company that checks all the boxes for a fitness tracker.

  • Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation): You don’t need to pay almost a thousand dollars to access Apple’s health features. The Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen) is also great for real-time fitness tracking thanks to its bright and intuitive display.

  • Garmin Forerunner 255 Music: The Forerunner 255 Music is perfect for runners who leave their phones at home and zone out with some music. Thanks to the Garmin Connect app, you still get access to plenty of metrics.

  • COROS APEX 2 Pro: The COROS APEX 2 Pro makes for a great adventure watch thanks to sapphire-resistant glass and large buttons that you can press easily with gloves.

Are GPS watches worth it?

GPS watches are worth it for a particular kind of person. If you’re going to be sitting at your desk and using it mainly for smartwatch features, then there are better options available, but if you’re going to be trail running long distances, then you’ll find many use cases for one of these.

What does a GPS watch do?

Depending on the watch, a GPS watch can track everything from your position anywhere on the globe and your heart rate. S.H.A.D.O. Pack 24L

With a name that stands for and delivers the driving principles of Suspension, Haul, Access, Durability, and Organized, it’s no doubt that the award-winning S.H.A.D.O. Pack is one of PDW’s best-in-class backpacks. Its 24L frame is packed with features from harness to bottom handle, including dual reinforced clamshell main compartments for your laptop/tablet and EDC, bolstered by a top accessory pocket and dual side stretch water bottle pockets.

It’s got enough space for well over five days’ worth of gear, with a spacious main compartment with a zippered clamshell top lid to store all of it in. The Road Warrior’s outer skin is made from 1000D Phthalate-free PVC tarpaulin which gives it its resilience, and its mesh, edge binding, webbing, zipper pulls, and Velcro loop all come in nylon.

Two padded shoulder straps can easily be attached/detached to suit your load, allowing you to carry the duffel in a backpack style, bolstered by two grab handles on each end and carry straps on top. For additional modularity, two rows of daisy-chain loops line the Road Warrior’s sides, and the bag also comes with a separate quick cinch bag for footwear or for separating laundry.

A padded handle, carry straps, and grab handles on each end give you options to easily manipulate even heavy loads, giving you grab-and-go capability at a moment’s notice. Versa Bear

Traveling with liquids can be a pain, but it doesn’t have to be with PDW’s Versa Bear, a friendly set of food-grade silicone squeeze bottles with secure flip-top caps. They’re TSA carry-on approved with a 2.7oz/80ml volume, and make for great containers for anything from condiments to dopp kit essentials like liquid soap, shampoo, and sunscreen. Note–while they’re versatile enough to store most liquids, be sure to check out the list of non-recommended items on the product page that may not be compatible with the Versa Bear’s silicone construction.

Those who have spent enough time trekking through the great outdoors know how crucial good hiking boots are. From protecting our feet against harsh weather to keeping them comfy enough to endure long hours of travel, picking the right hiking boots is one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make when planning your next outdoor adventure.

With an outdoor heritage going as far back as 1981, Merrell knows a thing or two about what makes a hiking boot great, and they proved it with the Moab, which is regarded as one of the world’s best-selling hikers. Collaborating with gear experts Huckberry, the M.O.A.B 3 GTX is the latest iteration of the fan-favorite hiking boot, updated with the latest footwear technology and an attractive new aluminum colorway.

The Huckberry x Merrell M.O.A.B. 3 GTX keeps every step cool by using a breathable GORE-TEX waterproof membrane and uppers made from full-grain leather and breathable mesh. A non-marking Vibram TC5+ outsole delivers an overall balance of grip, traction, durability, and flexibility. A Merrell Air Cushion in the heel and its Super Rebound Compound provide durable shock absorption to help reduce torque and allow for a smooth transition into the midfoot. A bellows tongue to keep out debris and a toe cap for added reinforcement provides another layer of protection.

Comfort is ensured using a Kinetic Fit Advanced removable contoured footbed with reinforced heel cushioning and a molded nylon arch shank, which helps the boot keep its shape over time and provides some much-needed arch support as well. Huckberry and Merrell show their love and respect for the environment by utilizing breathable mesh lining, laces, and webbing made entirely from recycled materials.

This unique Aluminum colorway comes with an extra pair of blue laces that call back to Merrell’s original 80s hikers, adding a touch of retro appeal to your outdoor ensemble. Grab yourself a pair at the link below.

One of our favorite aspects of the EDC philosophy is how our devices and gear are often streamlined, saving both space and time spent looking for our favorite tools and devices. Only a handful of companies understand this as well as VSSL. Already known for their modular outdoor kits for carrying essential gear, VSSL marks a world’s first by combining an insulated flask with a portable Bluetooth speaker.

The VSSL Insulated Flask uses the same design principles and materials that make VSSL gear crowd favorites. A stainless steel double-walled vacuum chamber keeps up to 8 oz of your preferred beverage at the perfect temperature, while an integrated flip carabiner makes it easy to attach to your pack’s clip or strap.

With a length of 9”, a diameter of 2”, and a weight of just 9.6 oz, the VSSL Insulated Flask is compact enough to carry around comfortably even on the most prolonged hiking expeditions. A patented endcap allows for two drinking methods – through the flask spout for quick sips and a fully opened lid when you need to hydrate more quickly.

VSSL knows music plays a significant role in making an outdoor excursion memorable. The Insulated Flask eliminates the need to bring a separate Bluetooth speaker along as it features a highly-durable, waterproof speaker as an endcap. These aren’t just your run-of-the-mill speakers, however. VSSL has partnered with Californian lifestyle audio brand Speaqua, known for its high-quality, go-anywhere waterproof Bluetooth speakers. The Speaqua endcap speaker on the Insulated Flask provides 5W of audio power for up to 5 hours and can be recharged on a USB-C connection.

Its scalloped base allows the speaker to sit upright without sacrificing sound quality. It uses the Bluetooth 5.0 standard, which helps not just to provide crystal clear audio but to improve battery efficiency as well. Multiple audio sources can connect to the speaker, so everyone on the trip with you gets to share their favorite tunes with the group. Like the rest of VSSL’s offerings, the Insulated Flask allows you to replace the speaker endcap with other modules like a compass or flashlight for added versatility on your trip.

With its premium materials, thoughtful design, and highly-innovative integrated speaker, the VSSL Insulated Flask significantly improves the outdoor camping experience. Add a soundtrack to your next adventure, and pick yours up at the link below.
