Vosteed, known for its high-quality knives featuring innovative designs, has recently launched its new Dachshund knife, named after the clever and lively dog breed. The Dachshund features a crossbar lock mechanism, an M390 stainless steel blade, and a titanium handle, making it a versatile and durable everyday carry companion.

The M390 stainless steel blade offers excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance, with a modified reverse tanto blade shape that is versatile enough to handle various cutting tasks. The blade’s thumb studs also allow for different opening options. The Dachund’s sleek and modern titanium handle is ergonomically contoured with an angled, geometric design, with a reversible pocket clip for tip-up carry. The crossbar lock system provides a strong, secure lockup and smooth and fast deployment. The lock can be easily operated with either hand, and it also adds to the fidget-friendly nature of the knife. Vosteed says the Dachshund is “not only fully ambidextrous and intuitive to use, but it also provides great fidgetablity and tons of fun.”

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Vosteed are on a roll this year, considering they first popped up on our radar late last year with a flashlight, then fast became a favorite knifemaker (for me especially) with their fidget- and budget-friendly models like the Corgi and the Raccoon. Designer Yue Dong and his team aren’t showing any signs of showing down, and the return of a fan-favorite model has me pretty excited.

The Thunderbird was an earlier model in their catalog, with a sleek, tanto-styled blade in S35VN and a larger 3.48” profile with Gmascus (G-10 laminate with a topo pattern) handle scales that contained Vosteed’s patent-pending Trek button lock, which, while not truly ambidextrous, can still comfortably be operated by either hand and still does the job of keeping your fingers away when closing up the blade. Inherent fidget friendliness was also the Thunderbird’s claim to fame, with three ways to flick it open between front and rear jimping and a thumb hole punctuating the end of the blade’s fuller.

The knife returns in a slightly smaller but more premium iteration, now with a top-tier M390 steel making up a 3.25” blade. Gmascus handles make a return with shuffled colorways (three available right now, with the blue/black one coming on November 7th), but this is shaping up to be every bit the fun, fidgetable knife as its larger predecessor.

What we like: Premium steel, a new take on G-10, and three ways to play—what’s not to like?

What to watch out for: The four base models are already good, but I can’t help but get hyped for the titanium variants coming on the 7th as well, which come with ELMAX steel and a frag pattern on the black variant’s scales. Watch this space for a hands-on when we’re able to grab one.

Final verdict: Time to get my flick on.

It’s National Knife Day, and you know we have to feature a slicer that’s been in our sights to celebrate. And what I’d like to feature today isn’t the most expensive, isn’t overflowing with top-tier materials, and isn’t changing the game with a completely unique design. In fact, it’s the complete antithesis of all that, which makes it my new favorite recommendation for people looking to pick up their first EDC knife.

We’ve featured Vosteed a lot before, and a big reason is the value and enjoyment of ownership you get with their blades. Many are affordable, come with unique designs not usually explored, and often both. And recently, they’ve shown they can flex in big ways when given the right chance and design(er).

Which brings me to the Raccoon. In many ways, it’s the distillation of super-popular knives that came before and the current state of rock-solid budget knives. You get a clean 3.25” drop point blade in 14C28N that folds into your choice of Micarta or G-10, and secures with either the fan-favorite button lock or, with its recent iterations, an ambidextrous crossbar one, which is a particularly nice sidegrade as a lefty myself. It’s available in a number of delightful colors that would make it an easy match for any EDC.

There are also some subtle but welcome details you don’t usually see at this price point, like a caged ceramic ball bearing pivot for a more fidgety deployment and little flourishes like a fancier pivot screw and flush ones for the reversible clip.

Last but most importantly, the Raccoon comes in at just 60 bucks. While that’s still a respectable price, especially for people starting out in EDC, in my opinion, it’s a fantastic value for everything you get, which adds up to a great everyday knife in both design and functionality. And since Vosteed has already shown its ability to really dial up the fit and finish on its knives, the Raccoon becomes a compelling platform for future exclusives and upgrades, like the upcoming ones from White Mountain Knives.

Happy National Knife Day, and on behalf of everyone on the EDC team, I hope you take the day to enjoy the knives you already have and continue the pursuit of the ones you still dream about. Carry on!

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

We’ve covered a number of Vosteed’s offerings in the past and have always been impressed by the value and unique designs they’ve offered, certainly bucking the trend of what constitutes a “budget” knife. But once in a while, every company takes the chance to demonstrate what they’re truly capable of, and thanks to a collaboration with Rob Saniscalchi of R.S. Knifeworks, Vosteed did just that with their most premium knife yet.

Originally dubbed the “Mayhem,” the RSKAOS is a knife taken to 11 in every possible way. It’s based on a custom framelock from R.S. Knifeworks but tweaked to be even more unique in this production version from tip to clip. Top-tier M390 steel known for its toughness and corrosion resistance, titanium handles, and an all-new top liner lock (think button and Compression) are the key features, with two blade shapes (3.46” wharncliffe and 3.3” sheepsfoot) and two colorways to give you four times the fun.

It’s a big departure from what we’ve seen so far from Vosteed, and I think it’s extremely refreshing that they can flex their design and manufacturing chops with the RSKAOS. It reflected in the knife’s original drop, where all four designs sold out in 20 seconds. It does so many things differently but capably, from the two blade designs leaning more towards utility, to a more futuristic design with the machined grooves in both the blade spine and body.

They even included a few smart and stylish flairs, like a copper-colored aluminum pivot collar on the regular titanium version and gilded aluminum accents on the black PVD titanium one. A minimal-knurled rear flipper tab complements the elliptical thumb, which in turn complements the rear lanyard hole. It really does feel like every aspect of the RSKAOS has been thoughtfully considered, and it deserves all the praise it’s been getting.

What we like: The RSKAOS is a welcome surprise from a brand that’s made a name for itself on the more affordable end of the industry, and is an excellent demonstration of their capabilities as knifemakers and collaborators.

What to watch out for: Premium features come with a premium price tag, but I think it’s fair, given the total package. Vosteed is planning on more stocks, so keep an eye out if you haven’t been able to snag one yet. One thing to note as well–the RSKAOS, unfortunately, only comes in a right-handed orientation.

Final verdict: Yes, Vosteed did that. And we want all of it.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The knife was one of the first tools made by human beings, and since its invention, it’s been a daily essential for its sheer utility alone. The long history of EDCing knives before the concept of everyday carry even existed means that there are many traditional blade styles out there, with tried and tested designs that have lasted through the years. One of those knives is the Shilin Cutter, from an old-time knifemaking family in Taiwan. Its hallmark leaf-style blade shape and downward-curved tip make it great for chopping, slicing, and piercing. But unlike fixed-blade knives with similar designs and purposes like the machete and kukri knife, the Shilin Cutter folds down to size, making it quite handy. But with the production of this style of knife fading away and modern EDC tastes calling for modern features like premium materials and locking mechanisms, the traditional Shilin Cutter has become hard to find.

With the Nightshade, the knifemakers at Vosteed seek to bring this traditional design into the modern EDC era with the materials, craftsmanship, and quality-of-life features that EDCers demand while remaining faithful to the original design notes of the Shilin Cutter. The TS version of the Nightshade features 3.26” Nitro-V stainless steel (best known for its exceptional corriosion resistance) with the same traditional leaf-shaped blade flat ground to a sharp edge. The original knife required a two-handed opening, so Vosteed’s interpretation allows for a faster thumbstud opening, which locks into place with a liner lock.

The action is smooth thanks to the caged ceramic ball bearing in the pivot, and the solid lock-up eliminates blade play and gives you the confidence to attack the same tasks that you can with the Shilin Cutter with gusto. Because it forgoes the traditional wood handle and the metal bolsters in favor of grippy G10 handle scales [on the TS], you can rest assured that the Vosteed Nightshade knife will stand up to the task better than the original.

What we like: This modern interpretation of the Shilin Cutter brings that traditional blade design into the modern EDC landscape. It pays the necessary homages to the original design and stays faith in general shape. But Vosteed has added the modern touches that make for a great everyday carry knife in the present day.

What to watch out for: Unlike a standard drop-point or spear-point blade, the Nightshade (like its original Shilin Cutter design inspiration) has a tip pointed down at an angle. This unique design feature will require you to change your grip when piecing through materials, and it may take some getting used to if you’re unfamiliar with the original knife. Be sure to also check out the other versions of the knife in different sizes, steels, and scales.

Final verdict: If you’re a fan of modern interpretations of classic knives or just a fan of folding utility blades that have proven their worth for decades or more, the Vosteed Nightshade is a great EDC option.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

While we tend to feature compact knives for everyday carry and highlight how a smaller blade size can still accomplish a great deal, sometimes having a longer blade is exactly what you need for EDC. Look at the new Vosteed Labrador folding knife, for example, with its sizable 3.74″ drop point blade and a long organic cutting edge, making it an excellent slicing and piercing tool. While a smaller knife could do similar work, the longer edge makes for a more effortless cut, especially when tackling more significant tasks. And the Vosteed Labrador, with its comfortable ergonomics, is well-suited to be your big knife for EDC.

A large folding knife gives you two advantages over a smaller option: a large blade that can handle more significant tasks and a more extended handle that lets you fully grip the knife. On the Labrador, the larger blade features a special 154CM stainless steel that’s been heat treated to 60 Rockwell units, making it harder and potentially sharper than run-of-the-mill blade steel without garnering the expensive price tags of knives that use premium steel to accomplish a similar goal. The canvas Micarta handle scales and ergonomically-shaped grip make it a joy to hold this knife after you’ve deployed the blade via the flipper opening mechanism or manual thumbstud. And underneath the handle scales is a secure liner lock that holds the blade in place during use.

And unlike many larger knives focusing on a tactical or outdoor survival design note, the Vosteed Labrador features their signature urban-friendly EDC design. Whether using this as your daily driver pocket knife during regular errands or taking this knife to the great outdoors, the Labrador is a great everyday carry option when you need a larger blade.

What we like: The larger drop-point blade helps you accomplish tasks requiring a blade more significant than most. The superior ergonomics of the Vosteed Labrador also make it easy to accomplish those tasks without having to fight the tool while doing it.

What to watch out for: While the heat treatment on the 154CM stainless steel is higher than most budget blade steel knives, it’s undeniable that it’s older blade steel that doesn’t have the same advantages you would get if you shelled out more money for a premium blade. But if you sharpen and maintain this knife, you will get good value for money.

Final verdict: The large size of the Vosteed Labrador might not be for everyone, but it’s a great option if you’re in the market for an accessible everyday carry blade that gets you hefty cutting power without a matching price tag.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Outdoor activities like camping and hiking place unique demands on your everyday carry, and you must be ready. You can get away with using urban EDC gear you would bring around when you’re near home, but it would help to have more sturdy and durable tools for extended hikes and hunting trips. That also applies to the knives you bring, especially if you plan to cook in the field. That’s where a dedicated outdoor fixed-blade cleaver knife like the Vosteed Minibarbar comes into play.

The Vosteed Minibarbar is a one-knife option that works as a camp and bushcraft knife and a cleaver knife when you’re in the great outdoors. Its full-tang cleaver design makes it great for rough chopping, whether taking down branches, prepping veggies, or breaking down game meats. The 7Cr17MoV base stainless steel provides a good platform for keeping and maintaining a sharp edge. You have a choice of four designs: a stonewashed black blade with black Micarta scales, satin with white G-10, satin with green Micarta, and the most eye-catching model with a Damascus pattern and gray G-10 scales.

You might ask what sets this particular knife apart from a kitchen cleaver you might already have in your knife block at home. The Minibarbar features either grippy G-10 or Micarta handle scales in a custom “frag” pattern on the tang. These provide way more grip than a standard kitchen knife and will do the job in inclement weather conditions where a kitchen knife would not. An integrated bottle opener at the knife’s pommel also makes it handy for pairing a cold one with the meal you’ve prepared.

What we like: The Vosteed Minibarbar provides a durable 6″ fixed-blade cleaver for outdoor excursions at a very approachable price. It’s a solid option for an all-in-one bushcraft knife and outdoor kitchen needs.

What to watch out for: Standard crowdfunding disclaimer here, so just be aware of how pledging on Kickstarter works. The Minibarbar is also slated to start shipping its first batch in June.

Final verdict: If you’re willing to take a shot, the Vosteed Minibarbar presents an exciting option for camp and outdoor kitchen knife enthusiasts. It can also work as a statement piece in your home kitchen if you go hiking, hunting, or camping infrequently.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

We’re all constantly on the hunt for gear that optimizes our setups by even a fraction. Maybe this knife could be a better shape, this wallet could be thinner, or maybe this bag could be a tad bit smaller. Finding the right item that dials in your EDC further is a pleasure in itself.

The Rook is one such light that has us excited, as it ticks a lot of boxes for an everyday light and offers tremendous value for its cost. It’s a collaboration between esteemed flashlight maker Reylight and Vosteed Knives, an up-and-coming brand with more than a few unique designs in their stable and already a number of collaborations under their belt, including the Rook.

Like its namesake, they’ve designed the Rook in appearance and capability to be a rock-solid backbone of your EDC, and they’ve certainly hit the mark on several enthusiast features. It comes with the latest and greatest Nichia 519A high CRI LED able to output up to 1,800 lumens, TIR optics behind a sapphire lens, and a simple but efficient programmable interface. You also get a lot of nice-to-haves like an 18350 cell with USB-C charging, an IPX7 waterproof rating, and even slots within its aluminum crenellations for up to 7 tritium vials.

It’s a complete compact package, and really, for just about $70 in their fully funded Kickstarter campaign, one of the better modern lights you can pick up today.

What we like: Thoughtful enthusiast features, excellent size to power ratio, nice array of colorways, and did we mention it was $69, nice. It’s also blown well past its goal for the campaign, and already ships out next month.

What to watch out for: Standard crowdfunding disclaimer here, so just be aware of how pledging on Kickstarter works.

Final verdict: We want one in every color.
