The Foiled Again series is Field Notes’ 59th Quarterly Edition for Summer 2023 and continues the brand’s elevation of the everyday notebook. They’ve partnered with Studio on Fire of St. Paul, Minnesota, to revisit and produce the hot-foil stamping process used to create the metallic cover of this edition, with Field Notes artist Aaron Draplin providing the detailed intricacies of the cover artwork.

Field Notes says that hot foil stamping is one of their favorite printing processes, originally patented in 1892 by Ernst Oeser of Germany. For the Foiled Again series, Studio on Fire hot-stamps silver foil on a new paper called Neenah Pearl “Indigo” 110# cover stock. Inside are 48 pages of 60# Finch Opaque text stock ruled with silver ink and bound with three staples. A matching tuck box that features the cover art in reverse colors stores and carries three Field Notes Foiled Again notebooks.

Paper is fragile by nature, which is one of the main deterrents when carrying a notebook. Even with a hard cover, the paper inside isn’t immune to wear and tear, especially when exposed to the elements. And some of the toughest notebooks—like those made by Rite in the Rain—could use some extra protection to make sure your notes make it home. So they’ve built an all-weather organizer to not just protect your notebook, but organize the rest of your essentials too. With tough materials and efficient organization in a pocketable pouch form factor that EDCers will appreciate, it’s an affordable way to keep your priceless ideas secure.

To make sure their pocket organizer can be the best it can be, Rite in the Rain partnered with Vanquest, best known for their EDC pouches, so you know it’s in good hands. The pouch’s exterior is made from tough Cordura fabric, which should be familiar to EDCers as a popular tactical material. Short-tabbed YKK zippers take care of ingress for both the pouch and its two ToughMesh pockets (one external and one external), topped off with paracord zipper pulls. The mesh pockets themselves are semi-transparent, letting you see their contents at a glance and making it easier to grab the essentials you need. Its main notebook sleeve can store vertical spiral notebooks up to to 3¼” x 5¼”, but also works as sleeve storage for other types of notebooks. Finally, a rear belt loop webbing square allows options for on-person or MOLLE-attached carry as you would expect from a versatile everyday pouch.

Important notes, that crucial phone number, and the next big idea are all priceless—make sure they stay that way. Pick up the Rite in the Rain all-weather pocket organizer from Amazon at the link below.

Bond Travel Gear Tomoe River Pocket Notebook

Fountain pen and rollerball fans will love the Bond Travel Gear notebooks for their unique paper inside. At first glance, the paper shouldn’t work well with such ink-heavy pens because it’s so thin, but it does. The finish on this impossibly light and thin paper doesn’t let ink seep through, so you can use both sides of the page no matter what pen suits your preference. Worth noting, it does take some additional dry time, but the silky smooth writing experience is definitely worth the wait (Pro tip: slip a piece of printer paper in between pages to use as a blotter if you’re in a hurry). Doane Paper is known for their very own grid+lines ruling. It combines the best of both worlds: graph and standard lined ruling. The page is covered in a 0.25” grid with a heavier line every three boxes. If you want to try it out before buying a pack, Doane lets you print out a sheet of their ruling on regular printer paper to get a feel for it.

Whether you’re planning your daily to-do’s or drawing up your holiday shopping list, writing things down by hand with pen and paper can make all the difference. To some EDCers, a solid pen and a pocket notebook are just as essential as their trusty folding knife. Few companies know this as well as the James Brand, who have recently started to expand their offering beyond their sleek folding knives to cover the rest of your bases. This time around, they’ve released an EDC pen with their signature modern minimalist styling, built with durable materials and kitted out with thoughtful details that any EDCer can appreciate. To accompany the Benton Pen, they’ve also collaborated with Field Notes to offer another 3-pack of notebooks to add to your collection as well.

Unlike most pens, the Benton Pen is machined from sturdy 304 stainless steel. It gives a premium feel with added heft and substance for balance and durability. It’s comfortably sized at 5.5” long, complete with a generous section of laser-etched stippling at the end of the pen for extra grip. As a refillable machined pen, the Benton accommodates the ever-popular Schmidt 900 Parker-style ballpoint refill that’s easy to find in your preferred size and color.

A rear click mechanism is an ideal choice for an EDC pen like the Benton, as its satisfying action is quick to deploy compared to screw caps and there are no loose parts to misplace. Even better, the clicky itself serves as a lanyard attachment point. An included cord lanyard with dual-textured bead offers easy retrieval and more secure retention, making this pen much harder to lose. A slim, PVD-coated pocket clip gives you convenient carry options and doubles as an anti-roll mechanism when you’ve set it down, too.

The Benton Pen comes in two colorways: a silver body with contrasting black clip and green-accented clicker, and a fully murdered out all-black version. They pair up nicely with the James Brand’s set of the ever-popular Field Notes pocket notebooks, which come in a 3-pack of Steel Grey, Walnut, and Electric Moss covers with green grid ruling.

With the James Brand Benton Pen and matching Field Notes, you’ll be ready to close out this year with style, and with all of your notes in order. You can pick up the Benton Pen and support a charitable cause in celebration of Giving Tuesday at the James Brand’s website linked below.

When it comes to rugged wallets built to withstand both daily use and the ravages of time, few manufacturers have made their mark as well as Trayvax. With robust materials paired with USA-made fit and finish, their products have become mainstays in many EDCs. Now they’ve set their sights in leveling up the rest of your essentials with the Summit Notebook. Built to work with the original Summit minimalist wallet and with a few useful tricks up its leather sleeve, the Notebook is a one-stop shop for keeping your essentials classy and consolidated.

Trayvax’s Summit wallet was designed to be as lightweight and efficient as possible: nylon webbing secures up to 8 cards and folded cash in a 3D-stamped steel frame. The Summit Notebook turns the wallet into a sleek leather journal, using its webbing to lock it into the left side. On the right side there’s space for a compact notebook and EDC favorite Fisher Space Pen. The leather itself is chestnut-colored oiled latigo cowhide leather that’s combination-tanned to be flexible yet durable.

Its left panel sports an ID window that gives quick visual and access to the top cards on the Summit wallet, while its right side houses a stash slot for extra cash or essentials. The included compact notebook uses paper from another EDC favorite, Rite in the Rain, making use of its all-weather performance, and down the Notebook’s spine is the pen slot to store the Fisher Space Pen. The whole package without cards or cash weighs 3.36 ounces, making it as pocket-friendly as possible while still maximizing its included essentials.

“Buy it for life” is the name of Trayvax’s game, with generous lifetime warranties to ensure quality and satisfaction for their products. Compact and protect your essentials (and ideas) with the Summit Notebook bundle at the Amazon link below, or if you’re already using the Summit Wallet, level it up with just the Notebook sleeve available here.

New Year, new you! At least that’s what everyone hopes will happen. After wrapping up the holidays and getting back to work, chances are that you might need some help getting re-organized. Luckily for you, the newest seasonal release from Field Notes is appropriately named “Resolution” and it’s designed to help you organize and tackle your daily tasks.

This vibrant 3-pack of notebooks contains one 56-week planner and two checklist journals. The 3.5 x 5.5” format is ideal for both carrying in your pocket or tossing in a bag without taking up too much room. The covers are bright red, white, and blue with alternating colored text, making each book stand out. It’s what’s on the inside that counts though. All three books feature light grey paper with white and medium grey inks. The date book displays one week on each page, perfect for recording and viewing appointments or reminders. Instead of a standard lined ruling, the checklist features alternating white and grey blocks with what Field Notes calls a “Slot Screw-Head Device” at the start of each line for marking tasks complete or in-progress.

Those who write with a fountain pen or rollerball will appreciate the extra smoothness and resistance to bleed through. How many times have you picked up your phone, just to forget what you were going to do with it? You end up browsing social media, checking an email, and often get distracted before you accomplish what you set out to do. When the world is full of digital distractions, sometimes it’s hard to keep track of even the most basic of to-do lists. The creators behind the Corso Mindful Notebook set out to make a notebook that motivates you and keeps you focused on the tasks at hand. With a the addition of a few simple features, Corso has transformed a basic notebook into a powerful tool to help you get motivated, achieve your goals, and reflect on your day.

At the top of each page in the notebook is an inspirational quote. These short quotes are great for getting your creative juices flowing. It’s also less daunting than a completely blank page. Below, there are plenty of lines to write out a journal entry, sketch an idea, or write out your to-do list. At the bottom of each page is a grey box for what they call “Daily Gratitude Practice”. By writing down what you’re grateful for each day, you can remind yourself of everything in your life that makes you happy and keeps you going. Corso also paired up with mindful.org to give back. A portion of each sale will go to the Foundation for a Mindful Society — a non-profit dedicated to bringing mindfulness into the daily lives of people all over the world.

The Corso Mindful Notebook is available on Kickstarter now. They’ve already surpassed their funding goal by several thousand dollars at the time of publishing. Add-on pledges include a sustainably-sourced ostrich leather cover, as well as additional notebooks. A $28 pledge secures you a book with a delivery before the 2017 holidays.

Even with the latest and greatest smartphones releasing year after year, so many EDCers still swear by good ol’ fashioned pen and paper. They make an unbeatable duo when it comes to fleshing out ideas and keeping tabs on things without having to swipe through app menus and folders. But unlike a smartphone, they’re not always the easiest thing to slip into your pockets day in and day out. The team at Dango Products have had success with taking something easy and essential to carry—your wallet—and redesigning it to help you carry more, smarter. Their latest project, the P01 Pioneer Wallet, consolidates your pen and paper in one place, but does it in a more compact wallet-sized form factor rather than your typically bulky journal cover design.

One big reason the P01 Pioneer is able to easily carry everything in such a compact footprint is because Dango designed every component from the ground up to fit together perfectly. They’ve taken one of the oldest tricks in the EDC playbook of slipping a pen into the spine of your wallet, then upped the execution. The pen was custom designed to slot into the spine of the P01 so it sits flush. To get that perfect fit, it’s CNC machined in the USA out of a lightweight, anodized aluminum like you’d expect to see on quality flashlights and other EDC tools. It boasts write-anywhere performance thanks to a pressurized ballpoint ink refill, and it’s compatible with the crowd favorite Fisher Space Pen refill as well. The business end of the pen narrows down to a minimalist grip system of 3 silicone o-rings while the back of the pen comes to a 4-way slotted tip for multiple attachment configurations. By now the P01 campaign hit its first stretch goal, so backing the project will get you a free paracord lanyard to easily retrieve the pen.

The other part of the equation is the notebook. It’s not the largest notebook you can carry, but it might be one of the most convenient ones. At a modest 24 pages, it’s a good balance between portability and thinness without needing replacements too often. Not to mention it’s stitched and finished in the USA then protected from excess wear and tear in the P01 wallet itself.

Of course, the P01 is still an EDCer’s wallet at its core. It has some of the best elements of all the different kinds of wallets you can carry in one. For starters, it’s made in the USA from premium Italian veg-tan leather for that patina after break in and familiar feel in hand. But that’s where the similarities with traditional leather wallets end. The leather comes laminated with an RFID-blocking material for your security and geometric patterning give a look and ergonomic feel that lean towards the future. The P01 uses a silicone strap for extra security and versatility like you’d find on more modern minimalist wallets. It’s designed to accommodate up to 20 cards as well as Dango’s wallet-sized multi-tool from their earlier line of wallets, the MT02. With options for a pen, notebook, multi-tool, and cards, it’s got room for a big chunk of your daily kit.

There’s just a month left to back the P01 on Kickstarter. It comes in two colorways — a natural tan with silver or a fully blacked out setup, now with a free paracord lanyard as part of the campaign’s first unlocked stretch goal. Check it out in more detail at the link below.

If you’re already carrying a good EDC pen, a pocket notebook is the next logical step. Often, it’s harder to find something to write on than it is to find something to write with. While browsing the site, you may have noticed more and more pocket notebooks showing up in EDCs. While it might seem like a trend, the truth is, lots of us rely on these little notebooks to write down critical information, notes, lists, and more. We’ve already outlined why you should carry a pocket notebook in general, but today we’re highlighting the 10 best notebooks worth carrying.

The Top 10 EDC Pocket Notebooks in 2017

The bright orange covers make them easy to find while adding a pop of color to your EDC.

Ever find that your pocket notebook gets torn to shreds before you can even fill it up? It happens more than it should, but the solution is pretty simple. Consider slipping your notebook into a leather cover, like this one from Bellroy. In addition to protecting a passport or pocket notebook, the cover also features card slots to replace your wallet for an even slimmer pocket carry.

The Notebook Cover is as slim as they come, yet full of thoughtful storage slots. In addition to your preferred 3.5” x 5.5” notebook, the Bellroy Notebook Cover has room for your daily essentials. Two card slots can hold 4-6 of your most-used cards or some folded up cash, allowing you to leave your wallet at home. There’s even a place for a pocket pen to clip into the spine where the cover naturally folds. It’s actually really easy to open and close, thanks to hidden magnets that snap the cover in place. The magnetic closure system won’t wear out over time either, unlike snaps and elastic bands you’d find on other covers.

Instead of a standalone notebook cover, consider this all-in-one replacement from Bellroy. Your pockets will thank you. Grab one on Amazon at the link below, or check it out in five color options of top-grain leather at Bellroy’s site.

Testing out some new stuff from Cardamon and Steel and Flint. The Cardamon wallet is a great option for those who want to keep their carry slim without giving up a bill slot. It holds 8 cards too. The Steel and Flint pen is a great pocket pen, nicely sized, has a knurled grip, and the cap closing mechanism is fun to play with. The Foursevens and Spyderco are nothing new, but I depend on them both daily.

If you’re like us, finding the right gear to EDC for ourselves is hard enough. Trying to find a gift for another like-minded EDCer can be daunting, if not utterly exhausting. How do you pick something they’ll appreciate, actually use, and be proud to carry? Our Everyday Carry gift guide should help.

Timeless Gifts That Are Always In Style

Image title

Not every EDC setup has to scream “tactical” to be effective. This two-part Carry Smarter guide focuses on two interpretations of the other end of the EDC spectrum — the “classy” carry. In this half, we’ll cover timeless, everyday gear made from classic materials like leather and brass that will patina and age as you carry them

Dapper Gear For the Gents and Professionals In Your Life

We’ve touched on why you may want to go the less-tactical route when assembling your EDC in part one of our Carry Smarter guide to classier ways to carry. Here, we’ll focus on a more traditional “gentleman’s carry” – a sophisticated set of essentials you’d find on the likes of James Bond or Selina Kyle at an upscale restaurant, on a night out on the town, or at an important business meeting.

8 Gadgets for Star Wars Fans

Whether you want to rep the Light Side with some all-white gear, or your allegiance lies with the Dark Side in an all-black everything setup, you’ll find capable gear to do it in a more subtle way in this guide. Which side will you choose?

The Best Battery Packs for the Techies

We’ve all been there. Trying to get as much use out of your phone only for it to inevitably die leaves you feeling as powerless as your battery. Although the technology in our gadgets is continuously improving, the batteries in them aren’t.

6 Tough Military Watches Under $100

These watches have rich historical appeal as they were made for and worn in the field by infantry, Special Forces, and WWII pilots. Nowadays, military style watches are popular amongst the EDC community for their features, legibility, durability, and aesthetic. In this guide, we’ll show you our recommendations for good looking, rugged watches that won’t break the bank.

10 Classically Cool Copper Watches

Like a good pair of leather boots, copper only gets better with time and use, developing a personalized patina that tells the story of your experiences. As one of the denser tool materials, it adds a nice heft to your gear, giving a solid feel when used. Copper’s material properties allow better heat dissipation for tools like flashlights or electronics, keeping them cool and safe from damage while running. Needless to say, it’s also one of the most beautiful and unique metals you can find on everyday items.

We’ve rounded up 7 EDC-friendly pocket notebooks with useful layouts and clear ruling to help you get your notes in order.

The Doane Grid+Lines is a favorite here. The paper is great for a mix of sketching and writing, thanks to its ruling with both grids and lines. It’s also a huge help if you’re trying to neaten up your handwriting with proper spacing and letter sizing.

The light purple ink is dark enough to see, but light enough so that it doesn’t get in the way of your words. It’s stapled at the top so you can easily write in portrait or landscape without the binding getting in the way.
