Sling bags are one of the most convenient ways to carry travel gear away from home. The sling design makes taking the bag on and off easier, especially compared to a traditional backpack. The single strap over the shoulder lets you carry a bag on either side of your body, and reducing the number of straps required to carry the same amount of gear tends to make things more lightweight.

With a travel sling bag, you can carry a bag at your front or back, depending on the situation. Back carry adds excellent stability, while carrying at the front lets you access your gear quickly, which is great if you carry a camera or other essential gear daily. While you can carry a backpack like a sling by only shouldering one of the straps, you’ll quickly find that to be highly uncomfortable and unbalanced compared to a sling. Some sling bags have even better padding than a traditional backpack, so they can be loaded to your heart’s content with no problem. And unlike a briefcase or duffel bag, the longer strap is more comfortable for longer trips.

Like other everyday carry travel bags, there’s a wide variety of sling bag designs. They span the entire range from small personal bags that augment your other travel bags of choice to large and thoughtfully designed sling bags that can be your one-bag solution when you’re headed out the door.

The Best Budget Travel Sling: tomtoc Navigator-T24

The tomtoc Navigator-T24 provides a slim, sleek, streamlined design with much padding for your work laptop or tablet. Its 7L capacity gives a lot of internal organization space to help keep small daily essentials like pens and pencils from tumbling around in your closed pack as you go about your day. And the premium YKK zippers and Duraflex buckles used also provide a long-lasting usage lifespan. The Best Water-Repellant Travel Sling: 1733 VX21 Side Pack

Regarding water repellency, few things beat sailcloth, and the 1733 VX21 Side Pack sling features this in spades. VX21 X-Pac is an American-made laminated synthetic fabric with a diamond ripstop layer and integrated waterproofing that makes bags featuring this material shed rain. The material is also immensely lightweight, especially compared to higher denier fabrics that still require a DWR layer on top of it to get close to the same amount of weatherproof performance. As for the design of the Side Pack, 1733 has reimagined the fanny pack with a cross-shoulder design that’s also highly modular. The best part is that shops with extensive experience and attention to detail stitch each bag in the United States. The Side Pack features MOLLE/PALS compatible webbing and an elastic rope lid to augment the pack. There’s enough room inside to fit a mirrorless camera and other small essentials, all secured with rugged YKK Aquaguard zippers.

The Best Large Travel Sling: GREENROOM136 JunkMonkey

The JunkMonkey is a Malaysian design from GREENROOM136, and it features a bombproof 1000D CORDURA nylon fabric for the bag’s exterior and 420D polyurethane-coated ripstop nylon fabric for the interior. These protect 19L of space inside for your tech, travel, and everyday essential needs. One of the most unique things about this bag is the internal ripstop lining that increases its weather resistance and allows you to slightly overpack the bag while keeping it close to your back. That ripstop lining is high-visibility yellow, making it easier to identify the gear you need inside the bag, which can support up to a 15” Apple MacBook Pro or similar laptop. Because you can pack this bag full to the brim and do it comfortably with its winged back harness and stabilizer strap, the GREENROOM136 JunkMonkey is my pick for the best large travel sling.

The Best Lightweight Travel Sling: Alpaka Flight Sling

The Alpaka Flight Sling is a slim travel bag that’s useful for carrying your passport, boarding pass, and other small travel essentials close to your person at all times. You can use it to augment your travel space on a plane that limits the number of bags you can have in the cabin since you can tuck it under clothing once you clear security. The 210/200D ripstop construction of the bag, combined with the YKK Aquaguard zippers, helps it keep the elements out when worn externally when you’re out and about at your final destination. The bag’s immense practicality and traveling versatility make it my pick for the best lightweight travel sling.

Our other recommendations

Manhattan Portage Atlas Sling Pro: Our co-founder Bernard spent over a year designing this sling with Manhattan Portage. The bullet profile fits up to an 11″ tablet (one of the few slings able to accommodate the size) and all your gear while remaining narrow and nimble while commuting through crowds. It sits centered on the back and has fantastic modularity and organizational space.

Aer Day Sling 3 Max X-Pac: Using X-Pac fabric allows Aer to provide substantial padding and protection for tablets up to 11” without bringing the weight of the overall bag up too much. The high-visibility interior also makes it easy to rapidly access your notes and other small gear essentials at the office or on the go.

Bellroy Venture Sling Camera Edition: This bag is suitable for short photo trips with room for a small mirrorless or compact camera and lots of tech organizer space. It can also be used as a travel bag, with all your camera gear ready to go once you’re where you need to be.

Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L: The seatbelt fabric design of the strap, quick adjustability, and hinged attachment make this one of the most comfortable slings you can carry, even if you don’t tote around cameras regularly. Peak Design’s lifetime warranty is also hard to beat, making this bag a buy-it-for-life deal you won’t regret.

Trakke Largo Sling: The Trakke Largo Sling takes quick access to the extreme, with two large zippered compartments and organizational space that make retrieving your everyday carry gear easy. The COBRA buckle strap is also quicker than a standard buckle, and its reversibility adds to the Trakke Largo’s ambidextrous appeal.

WNDRD Rogue 9L Sling: With its 1680D and 840D ballistic nylon with 5PM coating, the WNDRD Rogue 9L is one of the most heavy-duty and water-resistant sling bags you can carry. The internal dividers and tripod holder make the Rogue great for dedicated photography carry, but you’ll also appreciate the added padding if you carry tech essentials.

Mystery Ranch Hip Monkey Sling Bag: The Hip Monkey fits more of a traditional fanny pack style, but the wide strap makes it comfortable to wear as a sling. The bag fits a professional-sized mirrorless camera and lens with room to spare. If you find yourself in Japan, there’s an exclusive version of this pack using X-Pac fabric, and that is my current daily driver for 1.5-bag travel.

EVERGOODS Mountain Hip Pack: While the EVERGOODS Mountain Hip Pack is best carried ergonomically behind you at your lumbar region, the body-hugging design of the pack lets it work well slung over your shoulder, too. Its name denotes its intended use, and the breathable back panel on the Mountain Hip Pack deals with sweat and outdoor exertions better than standard spacer mesh on other bags.

North St. Bags Pioneer 12 Hip Pack: The Pioneer 12 is a versatile hip-pack sling that can also be used as a handlebar bag if you have a bicycle. It’s also made in the United States in Portland, Oregon, and North St. Bags guarantees it for life.

Wizard Works Hobgob Hip Pack: Wizard Works designed the Hobgob to minimize sharp edges and plastic hardware from rubbing against you while you wear it, making it comfortable for long-term use. Unlike many sling bags, you can add their Quick Draw Bottle Pocket to stay hydrated throughout the day.

DSPTCH Slingpack RND Dyneema: The technical construction of the DSPTCH Slingpack RND Dyneema makes it lightweight for its 15L capacity at 1lb 14oz. A hidden security pocket also serves as an excellent place to carry items you cannot lose, like your passport, when you’re out of the country.

Osprey Metron: The Osprey Metron was designed as a bike messenger sling bag, and it has lots of storage for laptops, tablets, parcels, and essential documents. The flap cover is also secured with buckles and hook and loop, making it highly unlikely that anything flies out of your sling when you’re screaming down a hill on a bike.

Features to Keep in Mind When Shopping for Travel Sling Bags

The plethora of choices for travel sling bags can make it intimidating if you’re looking for your first bag, but a few considerations should always come into mind when making your choice. These boil down to a few things: the material your bag is made of, the size and capacity of the bag itself, how comfortable it is to carry daily, and any special features any particular design might have compared to the rest.

Material

The material in your travel sling bag is essential because it impacts the durability of your bag and more. Picking a sling bag made out of flimsy material means it will break easily. If weight is an issue, you can choose a bag made out of ripstop nylon, sailcloth, or Dyneema Composite Fabric to maintain a good level of durability while being less hefty than traditional materials like waxed canvas or leather. If you’re looking for absolute bombproof construction, high-denier ballistic nylon is your best choice.

Size

The size of your travel sling bag is essential because it marks the limit of the gear you can pack. However, travel limitations also dictate the size of the bag you pick. Depending on the airline or railroad restrictions of your choice, you may have to limit based on a personal bag or carry-on size compatibility.

Comfort

Comfort is sometimes underrated when picking a travel sling bag, but it’s critical because a poorly designed sling bag will be more uncomfortable to carry compared to a backpack that might be designed sub-optimally. The single strap design can bite into your neck or shoulder if it’s not done well, and that’s why picking a bag with a good strap and enough padding to make it comfortable is essential. Some sling bags further augment the equation by adding stabilizer straps and ambidextrous options that make switching between left-handed and right-handed carry easy based on the load and travel.

Features

The features emphasized in each travel sling bag should correspond to your travel needs. You may value padded dividers and laptop sleeves if you carry a laptop, tablet, or expensive camera gear. People with lots of stationery in their everyday carry will value dedicated organizational space. If you live or travel to places that rain or snow a lot, waterproof materials and quality zippers like those from YKK come into play. You choose the most important features to you, and sometimes that may mean picking more than one travel sling bag for different situations at different times.

Best Travel Sling Bag FAQs

Are sling bags good for travel?

Sling bags are great for travel because they are easier to carry than a backpack or tote bag. Sloping a bag across your shoulder on either side makes it easy to get through crowded bus terminals and get to where you need to go without hassle.

Is a sling bag considered a carry-on?

A sling bag can be considered a carry-on bag if it meets your airline’s size requirements. However, most sling bags on the market are substantially smaller than the carry-on size limit because sling bags that are too big can become very uncomfortable to carry long term.

What is the difference between a sling bag and a crossbody bag?

There is a bit of interchangeability between a sling bag and a crossbody bag. However, some are dedicated crossbody bags that only make sense to carry across your body. A sling bag is versatile enough to be carried in several ways that are not just across your body.

Is a sling bag the same as a fanny pack?

Some sling bags can be used as a fanny pack. Some fanny packs can be deliberately carried as a sling bag through modification or sheer determination. It depends on the bag and the user whether a fanny pack can make for a good sling bag.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Over a decade ago, one of the first quality bags I used for my EDC was the 5.11 MOAB (Mobile Operation Attachment Bag) 10. At the time, it was precisely what I needed: mission-ready durability, could fit my 12” work laptop, and could even be ambidextrously configured, which was a rare boon for lefties at the time.

However, It wasn’t without drawbacks, and I eventually transitioned to a larger bag when I had larger work essentials and travel to add to the mix. But the MOAB remains one of my favorite tactical bags. My modern needs have changed, and I haven’t thought of the 10 for a while, but it was a pleasant surprise to see 5.11 revisit the platform and release the Goldilocks version of the MOAB, the 13-liter MOAB 8.

Like its siblings 10 and 6, the MOAB 8 comes in four colors of 1050D nylon in 5.11’s signature tactical aesthetic, making use of most available space with MOLLE-compatible webbing, both for modular accessories as well as the ability to connect to the bigger 5.11 RUSH packs. It takes its layout from its bigger brother, with a front compartment with a zip pocket and admin section, a concealed center compartment for securing more sensitive cargo, and a main compartment that can lay flat for easier packing. Rounding out its features are a beefy top handle, a fleece-lined quick access pocket, a hydration-ready pocket under the strap with a pass-through port, and a loop panel front and center on the exterior to customize with your favorite patch.

The MOAB 8 is still very much more mission-inclined with its tried and tested design, but I think its combination of ruggedness and key usability features still make it a compelling urban EDC solution for years’ worth of service, just like my trusty 10.

What I like: The MOAB 8 keeps all the features I loved with the 10, and trims off the excess for a lower profile and weight, like the compression straps and tuckable bottom half of the shoulder strap.

What to watch out for: Despite its smaller size, the MOAB 8 is still a hefty bag, weighing 2.4 pounds while empty. Keep that in mind when packing it full and its asymmetric position on your back.

Final verdict: The MOAB 6 and 10 were vastly different in purpose and capacity, and the 8 hits the sweet spot between for an everyday pack.

For most people, their concept of EDC essentials is what would easily fit in their pockets. Still, for others, this may not be enough. It’s time to consider a compact sling bag when you’re looking to carry more gear than would fit in your clothes’ compartments but not enough for a full-sized bag or daypack. They offer a lightweight carry option for warm weather and long errands and pack just enough for full-day walkabouts without being too clunky or heavy. Since everybody’s ideal carry would differ, finding one that meets your specific storage and organization needs is best. In this guide, we put together 20 great examples of EDC-worthy sling bag options for every carry scenario.

The Top Sling Bags You Should Know

When picking a good sling bag, you should look out for a few things. The first is capacity. Sling packs are usually much smaller than your typical backpack, so if you carry a lot of gear, focus on the larger options ranging from 7L-10L.

As with most EDC bags, you should also pay close attention to the materials. Water-resistant fabric and zippers are a must to keep your gear dry. You should also pay attention to how heavy the sling is. For the most part, you’ll carry these over your shoulders, so lighter is better if you have neck or shoulder issues.

There are few brands I trust as much as Bellroy when it comes to quality. You can find everything from messenger bags to travel backpacks in their lineup, and I’ve had one of their wallets for years. So naturally, I figured the 10L Venture Sling Camera Edition was worth checking out. It’s the perfect camera bag for grab-and-go photographers thanks to clever plenty of internal organization, a sleek water-resistant exterior that feels nice to the touch, and straps on the bottom for my tripod.
But all those same features also make it great for a more general EDC. The detachable strap with a quick-slide buckle makes it easy to get to my gear in a pinch, and the pockets and zippered pouches scattered throughout are perfect for carrying spare batteries, SD cards, flashlights, and a water bottle. They even come with padded dividers to help separate your items. The Bellroy Venture Sling comes in 6L or 9L options, so it has you covered depending on what you’re looking for.

Anyone looking for a crossbody bag you can snap on and remove in one motion should look no further than the 7L Chrome Industries Tensile Hip Pack Sling. This small sling has the same signature seatbelt buckle you’ll find across its well-respected lineup. It’s easily adjustable and has a built-in bottle opener for celebrating once you reach your destination. It’s made entirely of water-resistant nylon that’s tough to break and weighs almost nothing (0.84 pounds/0.38 kg).
The zippered front pocket is perfect for getting to my most used items quickly, which means taking off the bag every time I needed to get something out of it wasn’t necessary. I will say that the main compartment is pretty barebones and doesn’t have much organization, but at least that gives you space to sort your larger gear as needed. The second compartment is the one that I dedicated to smaller items thanks to its integrated organizational pouch. It’s also the compartment closest to the body, making it harder to access for any ne’er-do-wells that might be watching.
It’s available in a stealthy all-black color option or a Stormtrooper white, in 3-layer recycled laminated nylon and polyester lined with 210D nylon ripstop. Whichever you choose, chances are you won’t be disappointed.

Sometimes, you don’t need a huge crossbody bag if you’re going for a quick stroll. Still, if you’re like me and never leave the house without a camera, then the WNDRD ROAM Sling might be for you. This 3L camera sling is small enough that it doesn’t get in the way of everyday life, but it is still packed with enough features to be useful even if you’re not a photographer. The entire sling uses smooth-feeling ballistic nylon for its body and also has water-resistant YKK zippers that will keep your gear dry in a passing rainstorm (though you might need an umbrella). Inside is plenty of internal organization for smaller accessories and it even comes with an adjustable divider that perfectly fits an extra lens (or, in my case, a snack).
The ROAM Sling is noteworthy, though, because the team at WNDRD designed it to fit everyone, regardless of body type. The 5-point adjustment system lets you adjust every aspect of how you carry the bag, so after a minute or two of fiddling around, it should feel like it’s meant for you. It also has a built-in key clip and air mesh back panel to prevent a sweaty back on longer days which is my curse. The cherry on top is the dual straps on the bottom, perfect for carrying a tripod or even a water bottle.

Whether you travel often or commute via public transportation as I do, sometimes even a daypack can be too conspicuous. The NOMATIC Navigator Premium Everyday Sling is a versatile sling bag that combines a clever anti-theft design with plenty of organization for daily essentials. It features a discreet all-black exterior made of a water-resistant material. Trusty waterproof zippers are also used here to protect everything in it from the elements. It also protects your gear from thieves with an RFID-blocking safe pocket and tamper-proof zippers, which I think is a nice touch.
You get a cardholder built right into the shoulder strap to get to transit cards without pulling out your wallet, and it even has a hidden key leash. The back panel is a nice breathable mesh that keeps my back cool, and while the sling is too small to fit a laptop, it can definitely fit my 11” iPad or Nintendo Switch. The main compartment has five pockets for organizing smaller items, and I found the front pocket perfect for things like Bluetooth earbuds or a flashlight.

Mission Workshop excels at making durable bags for cyclists, and the 2.5L Axis Sling lives up to that legacy. It’s way smaller than some of the other options I found from Mission Workshop. Still, the San Francisco-based company didn’t cut corners in delivering a sling made from the same high-quality materials as its backpacks. It’s made with 500D nylon and doesn’t underestimate the damage a passing rainstorm can do, which is something I’ve done at least twice to my detriment. It features water-repellent YKK urethane zippers complete with an extra protective flap for even more weather resistance.
The entire interior has a floating liner that better protects gear from the elements than your typical fanny pack. The main compartment easily holds keys, a wallet, and other everyday essentials like my flashlight and multi-tool. On the back is a U-Lock holder for cyclists, while the quick-release buckle makes getting it on or off a breeze. Whether you wear it fanny pack style or sling it over your shoulder like I do, the Axis is a solid option for people who want to keep it light.

Osprey is best known for its lightweight travel and hiking backpacks, but it is a mistake to overlook the 6L Daylite Sling. The sling is aptly named as it makes for an excellent option for your next day trip, thanks to a shoulder bag design and light weight. It features dual compartments with a mesh organizer and key clip built-in, which helps me keep track of smaller items I always lose throughout the day. Any place to stash my sunglasses that isn’t in my shirt pocket would be an improvement.
The Daylite has an easy-access pocket on the shoulder strap, perfect for chapstick or snacks (two hiking essentials, in my opinion), and because of its small size, it’s also reasonably packable. The Osprey Daylight Sling makes a solid option no matter where you’re going.

If you’re looking for more of a general use-case bag, check out the tomtoc Urban Sling Bag. It’s made with a minimal design, which I like as it helps you fly under the radar throughout the day. It comes in a reliable CORDURA nylon and features a quick-release buckle for quickly getting it off when you need to get something. A few internal pockets and sleeves in the main compartment prevent smaller items from falling into a giant pile at the bottom of the bag, and an exterior pocket is perfect for things like earbuds or your keys. Plus, a third compartment sneakily keeps more important items like wallets or passports close to your body when you’re out exploring.
The cherry on top is that this bag comes in many different sizes and colors, so chances are you’ll find one that fits your needs. It also comes with a 12-month warranty should anything go wrong. Whether commuting to the office or exploring a new city on vacation, the tomtoc Urban Sling Bag is a steal at this price point.

Meant as an on-the-go hip pack, the Topo Designs Mini Quick Pack features a bike light mount and adjustable compression straps for attaching extra gear on the outside. A large diagonally zippered front pocket provides easy access to small items and includes an integrated clip for keys. The main compartment has a hanging pocket for a bit of organization, and both compartments use brightly colored liners to help you sort through your stuff quickly.
Rugged, oversized YKK zippers pair with the brand’s signature paracord pulls to access your gear easily. Finally, two external carry handles make toting the Mini Quick Pack comfortable when not on your shoulder or hips. The best thing, though, is like all Topo products, it comes in so many fun and quirky colors, so you can either be discreet or stand out.

The first thing that jumped out to me about the Hazard 4 Bandoleer is the thermoformed molded hardshell construction of the bag itself. The technique involved turning the already-durable and water-resistant 1000D CORDURA fabric into something even more ready to deal with the scraps of daily use. With 2 liters of space, there’s enough room for essential tech and carry gear without weighing you down and ruining your mobility.
It features internal organization spaces for smaller items like snacks, keys, multi-tools, and small flashlights. There’s also a dedicated space compatible with hook and loop holsters for defensive CCW needs. The bag’s exterior can be made even more badass with Hazard 4’s HardPoint hardware accessories that give it sturdy attachment points.

If you want a discreet and functional sling bag, check out the Timbuk2 Vapor Sling. This bag is perfect for carrying everyday essentials like multi-tools and charging cables, and it even has a tablet sleeve for up to a 10.5” iPad. The main compartment is easy to access via the convenient side entry, which uses trusty YKK zippers to stay closed while out and about. The bag has a tough exterior made of lightweight nylon that will protect your gear, but the pockets have a soft satin fabric lining that feels perfectly safe to stash tech items like a camera or my iPad.
One thing to note is that this bag doesn’t have much internal organization, but what it lacks on the inside, it makes up for with easy access pockets along the exterior that come in handy when you’re in a crowded subway car and want to retrieve something. The Timbuk2 Vapor Sling comes in three low-key colors: black, cocoa brown, and navy blue.

If you research backpacks with some frequency, one brand that will pop up repeatedly is Aer. The company makes plenty of solid EDC options, and the 6L City Sling Max X-Pac is one of them. The first thing that jumped out to me about this classic sling is the emphasis on carrying and organizing your gear. It’s too small for me to stuff in spare clothes or a laptop, but it is perfect for my glasses, passport, keys, and even an 11” iPad.
The exterior is made of lightweight X-Pac material and weatherproof with YKK Aquaguard zippers for good measure. The top handle is super helpful for adjusting the bag in a pinch, and the adjustable strap has a Fidlock magnetic closure for quick release, which makes me feel like a secret agent. Of course, the interior has mesh pockets for ease of organization and is decorated in bright orange for better visibility in low-light situations.

The Peak Design Everyday Sling is a minimalist and low-profile EDC pack that is fairly iconic in the photography space nowadays. It’s easy to carry around and provides just enough room for everyday valuables and essentials, with size options to accommodate all your loadouts. Its core design features low weight and ergonomic details, such as angled strap mounts and an easily adjustable strap, which make for a comfortable and unrestricted all-day carry, even with my camera and a spare lens inside it.
A customizable internal organization system utilizes Peak Design’s signature FlexFold divider to ensure valuables (like a phone and camera) sit securely inside. Multiple interior stretch pockets are perfect for SD cards or smaller cable, and a zippered exterior slip pocket ensures numerous ways to pack for whatever adventure comes your way.

For a classic fanny pack-style sling, look no further than the North St. Bags Pioneer 9 Hip Pack. My favorite benefit of simple bike commuter designs is that they can be worn as a crossbody sling, hip pack, or handlebar bag. I can even use it as a dopp kit on my next weekend adventure. One thing to be aware of is that it comes in two materials: ECOPAK EPX or 1000D CORDURA nylon, both water-resistant. So at least you don’t have to worry about bad weather.
Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty which isn’t something you see often. This pack has a roughly 2.5L capacity, so while it can’t hold my laptop, it does have a regular pocket perfect for the holy trinity of phones, wallet, and keys. If that isn’t enough space, you can also add a small vinyl pocket to your order to help keep separate essential tools like multi-tools and flashlights from the general EDC.
The Pioneer 9 Hip Pack is available in many different colors, so whatever your style is, chances are you’ll be able to find one perfect for you (the Coyote colors really sing to me, though!).

The high-tech, waterproof, and durable Dyneema Composite Fabric keeps the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Versa Sling just under 3 ounces, meaning it’s barely noticeable when wearing it. Still, it’s plenty rugged enough for most EDC needs. The stowable waist strap and multiple carry options make it a versatile pack that can transition from a sling bag to a fanny pack, and my favorite thing about it is that you can even attach it to the sternum or waist straps of your backpack and use it as an external accessory pouch.
Three pockets provide plenty of organization options: the main pouch is perfect for food, smaller beverages, your camera and GPS gear; a front zipper pocket for valuables, keys, and your phone. And a stash pocket on the back for things you need within quick and easy reach. There are also durable YKK zippers and buckles throughout to keep things safely stashed, whether you’re backpacking through the backcountry or transferring flights.

If you’re looking for a unique bag that wears comfortably, the Trakke X-Pac Largo Sling is worth checking out. This 6L sling pack is made for EDC thanks to a combination of solid build materials and a clever design you don’t see often. I think it looks like an actual sling, not a fanny pack with a longer strap. It features tried-and-true materials like an X-Pac exterior, an AustriAlpin Cobra buckle, and YKK zippers that protect against rain.
The bag’s interior liner is my favorite thing about it, with a highly visible orange that’s perfect for low-light situations as the color provides a bright background that makes it easy to distinguish gear against. The X-Pac Largo Sling has two compartments. The smaller pocket is perfect for freeing up pocket space as it fits things like your phone, keys, and wallet. The larger compartment gives you more room to experiment with, so depending on the use case, you can toss in a small camera, tablet, or even a few pocket organizers.

It seems like DSPTCH makes a bag for every occasion, and its RND editions typically signify experimental releases that are pretty damn cool in my opinion. One of them being the Unit Sling Pouch. It’s made specifically for offloading smaller items too cumbersome to carry in your pockets. It’s made from my favorite bag material, which is a super-lightweight Dyneema composite fabric. That means that it only weighs 7 ounces and is incredibly water-resistant. The YKK zippers also seal together, preventing water from entering either compartment.
Speaking of which, the bag has two minimal compartments. The smaller one is perfect for keys and other smaller items, while the main compartment is just a big pocket waiting for you to stuff things into it. It also comes with a quick-release Fidlock strap and can be worn underneath a jacket just as comfortably, thanks to its slim size and minimal silhouette. While this sling isn’t cheap (I had to save a bit to get mine), it’ll likely be the last sling you’ll ever need.

If you don’t want to think about too much and just want a solid, no-nonsense sling you can trust, get the 8L Mystery Ranch Monkey Sling. The name Mystery Ranch is synonymous with practical gear. So whether you’re in the field or trekking around the city as I do, this is a classic fanny pack that is perfect for carrying anything from emergency kits to a water bottle in its large main compartment.
The adjustable belt strap makes it easy to wear on the hip or over the shoulder depending on the situation, and a sturdy buckle keeps it secure when you need it to be. Our favorite thing about it is the compression straps that help keep the bag slim against your body, so you don’t look like a hunchback walking around with it.
The bag comes in various colors, from stealthy black to high-vis orange, so you have plenty of options. It’s also one of the more affordable bags on this list, making it a solid choice if you’re not sure about the usefulness of a sling and want to try it with your kit without investing too much.

Another great option for X-Pac lovers like myself is the Alpaka Bravo Sling Max LE. This is one of the larger slings on this list, with a 10L capacity and four compartments. The exterior is a black MultiCam X50 X-Pac weatherproof material, and it has an orange 210D ripstop nylon lining, making a perfect backdrop for smaller items. The front pocket has RFID blocking, and this anti-theft sling even has tamper-proof zippers to ease my suspicious mind. The zippers are also waterproof, which helps keep gear dry, which is a good thing considering this sling can comfortably hold up to a 14” laptop.
One nice touch I like is the mix of sleeves and mesh pockets in the front compartment, which are super helpful when organizing my gear for the day. It even has a built-in magnetic key clip attachment point for my very quiet keys. The Alpaka Bravo Sling Max LE is perfect for anyone that still has to carry a good amount of tech for work but is looking to downsize from a traditional backpack.

Sometimes, going with the affordable option means that you’ll be sacrificing quality, but that isn’t the case with the 6L GREENROOM136 Metrorunner Sling. This no-nonsense bag uses 1000D CORDURA nylon for the exterior, a giant YKK side release buckle, and of course water-resistant zippers. The shoulder strap has padded EVA foam for comfort, and the bag has two main compartments for organizing gear.
The best thing about it is that there are mini secret pockets you’ll have to find yourself (but we promise they’re useful), and side compression straps keep the bag close to your body when you want it to be. If you want a bag that won’t break the bank but will still get the job done, you can’t go wrong with the Metrorunner.

Some Basic Sling Bag FAQs

Is a sling bag worth it?

A sling bag is worth it if you don’t need to carry too much and only need to EDC a few extra things. A sling bag might not be for everyone, but you won’t be disappointed if you can hone down the perfect kit for your particular sling.

Are sling backpacks better?

Sling backpacks are similar to traditional backpacks. It could be better for you if you typically carry a big pack that’s mostly empty, but if you already carry a bag full of what you consider essential, you might find it hard to stuff it all into a smaller sling pack.

Are sling bags still in style?

Sling packs are for sure back in style. Crossbody slings and fanny packs have come a long way since the 90s. Nowadays, they’re made with durable materials by trustworthy brands with an eye for clever design.

What are the benefits of a sling bag?

The benefits of a sling pack include quick access to frequently used items and a smaller bag that is way easier to manage when you’re out and about. They’re also typically lighter in weight than your average backpack, meaning you can spend the day outdoors without putting too much strain on your back.

Whether you travel a lot or you like to carry more gear than would fit inside your pockets with you, sling bags are a great solution. They’re portable, low-profile, and versatile, keeping anything you put inside them at a hands reach without the bulk of bigger bags. Aplaka’s Atom X Sling offers an innovative design with top of the line construction along with a slick new limited edition colorway, to boot.

Starting off with its design, the Atom X comes in a super-slim profile that remains flat against your body while empty but expands when you place your gear inside, giving you 2.5L of total storage. Measuring in at 11.8“ by 7.9”, this sling has enough size to fit most gear and gadgets including a Nintendo Switch, while remaining small enough to not slow you down.

Inside you’ll find three separate compartments, each with its own specific purpose. The main compartment sits in the middle, lined with orange 210D ripstop nylon and comes with two smaller pockets for organization. The smaller rear compartment is designed to hold smaller objects like your passport, ID, or other flat valuables. At the front you’ll find a compartment with self-sanitizing fabric, infused with copper and silver nano-particles that destroy germs when they come in contact with it. This compartment is ideal to store things like your phone or your wallet, since it’s also RFID-blocking.

The Atom X’s exterior is built from VX21 X-Pac, a multi-layer technical fabric that gives the sling water, abrasion, tear, puncture, and even UV resistance in a cool Indigo Blue colorway for this limited edition release. The sling also comes with lockable zippers, giving you that extra peace of mind when you eventually find yourself traveling or in crowded places.

A couple of key leashes in the front and back allow you to take advantage of its modular design, giving you an attachment point for different accessories. Last but not least, you can use its magnetic buckle to adjust the sling to an over-the-shoulder, crossbody, or waist EDC. Check it out while supplies last at the link below.

Whether your travels take you to places near or far, the new Aer Travel Sling 2 features a design that’s sized just right, with features that keep all of your essentials close at hand. And with its versatile carry options, it can be your regular go-to bag even if your most frequent travel destinations lie at either ends of your work commute. Its sleek, minimal, and low-profile design won’t make you stand out from a crowd, and its understated elegance makes it appropriate for more dressy situations at the office too. If you’re in the market for a new tech-friendly everyday carry sling bag, the Aer Travel Sling 2 should be at the top of your list this year.

Unlike a lot of bags earmarked for travel on the market, the Aer Travel Sling 2 isn’t too big and bulky for the times when you aren’t trying to one-bag it abroad. It has 12 liters of capacity for your essentials, and comes with a well-considered design that helps you use that space wisely. It starts with the padded laptop sleeve with a soft lining that cushions up to a 16″ laptop or tablet computer.

The main compartment also features lots of internal organization spaces including mesh and zip pockets that allow you to keep smaller gear, accessories, and tech items from flopping around the bag as you move from place to place. And for your quick access needs, there’s a small dedicated pocket on the exterior of the bag that can keep your travel documents, payment cards, and other critical items ready within reach at a moment’s notice.

Of course the design of any sling bag means it’s easier to take off and access compared to a standard backpack, and the Aer Travel Sling 2 brings it up a notch with its versatile sling strap that allows you to adjust its length for either crossbody sling or single shoulder use. For extra security on the go you can tighten things up and keep the bag close to your body, cinching up the external buckles to reduce the bag’s footprint. And for the time when you can finally take this bag with you on your next flight, the built-in luggage pass through integrates with ease with your luggage routine.

Wherever your travels take you, the Travel Pack 2 is built to last, made with Aer’s signature use of water-resistant 1680D CORDURA nylon for the exterior, YKK zippers, and Duraflex hardware, for a comprehensive and robust construction inside and out.

The Aer Travel Sling 2 is one of the best compact everyday carry slings you can buy right now, whether you plan to use it when the airways open up again or you’re looking for a smart and versatile option for your daily commute. Check it out at the link below.

In the pursuit of the right bag for a lightweight EDC, the once-maligned fanny pack has made a big resurgence in recent years. That’s thanks in no small part to manufacturers making them actually practical and functional in terms of the features they pack into a small space, as well as versatility in how you can actually carry them around everyday. Take the new EVERGOODS Mountain Hip Pack for example: its functionality is in its name, but it’s just as useful as a crossbody sling or shoulder bag based your needs. The design of the Mountain Hip Pack brings easy access and comfortable all-day carry to the table, making it a compelling option when you’re looking to pick up your next everyday carry bag.

At 3.5L of capacity, the EVERGOODS Mountain Hip Pack has the organizational space to fit your EDC essentials, freeing up your limited pocket space when you’re on the go, and making your gear easier to reach at a moment’s notice too. Its made out of 210D HT (High Tenacity) nylon 6,6 material which is lightweight yet durable, and the bag itself only weighs 0.94 pounds unloaded. Whether you wear it as a shoulder sling or a hip pack its U-shaped main zipper allows wide access to the main compartment, and the drop-in pockets help you keep track of your smaller essentials and tech.

There’s an integrated key leash for added convenience, and for the most valuable things there’s a hidden zippered security pocket inside of the main cavity. Manipulating the side-mounted buckles allows you to quickly switch between hip pack and sling bag mode, and both methods of carry can be sustained for extended periods of time thanks to the breathable back panel that makes this a comfortable bag to have on hand.

Under the surface, the Mountain Hip Pack comes with some not-so-obvious features that give it some extra utility should you consider it as your EDC. Underneath the front panel is a quick stuff sleeve where you can slip in a small jacket or wet items without having to take up or mess with any of the interior space. The strap buckles themselves are on the side of the sling on top of padded material, so no hard plastic has to come into contact with your body. Last but not least, side compression straps expand or slim down the Hip Pack as needed throughout your day.

With its superior versatility and practicality, the EVERGOODS Mountain Hip Pack has the chops to be your daily driver when you’re pared down to the essentials. It can also act as a secondary personal bag for quick-access items when you’re traveling. The bag itself is available in a discreet black and a high-visibility limited edition blue that helps you stand out when you want to. Make one yours today by clicking the link below and buying it now.

On short hops and quick trips around town, sometimes it can be too cumbersome to EDC a full-sized bag. But with all the gear we carry every day, you need a place to place the things that won’t fit in your pockets like tablets, e-book readers, compact cameras, and notebooks. That’s where small crossbody bags like the Timbuk2 Agent flex their strength by giving you added storage space on the go without taking up too much conspicuous space in and of itself. It’s slim and low-profile, letting you move about with ease, and it’s a solid addition to your urban-friendly everyday carry.

The slim 10″ Timbuk2 Agent Crossbody Bag gives you 2.4 liters of highly-organized storage in a low-profile package that stays close to your chest as you move about. In that way, there’s less chance of getting snagged by the bag itself when you’re navigating through the city. The all-black look with discreet branding sets it apart from the luxury fashion accessories that most thieves are looking for, and at any rate this bag has far more organization options than those offerings too.

The main compartment has enough space to fit a small iPad or tablet and your other accessories, and a front waterproof zippered pocket allows for separate carry of documents and other compact essentials. For easy access to your keys, that area also features a key leash, helping you keep a hold on your keys as you go about your business. There’s webbing on the bag too, and while it’s not MOLLE spec per se you might be able to get away with attaching this bag to more tactical gear if you have that in mind.

Timbuk2 also promotes the ability to store a bike lock through the loops, and that’s certainly something that normally won’t fit in your pockets at all. And when you’re stuck at home or using a bigger bag for your EDC, you can certainly use the Agent Crossbody Bag as a storage pouch for your EDC essentials too, especially with its detachable straps.

With its sleek and low-profile design, the Timbuk2 Agent Crossbody Bag gives you welcome storage options when you’re trying to travel light. It’s a great option for anyone who’s already pared down to the essentials but needs a little bit more space to carry everything they need. If that sounds like you, make sure to click the link below and add this versatile sling pouch to your own EDC today.

If you need a way to carry extra gear but don’t want a full-size bag, a sling-sized companion like Mystery Ranch’s Hip Monkey is the way to go. It’s a surprisingly roomy fanny pack, with a durable construction and thoughtful features. It comes with a full 8L of space across two compartments for carrying all the gear you might need. Compression straps keep the bag low-profile despite its considerable capacity. These straps help you reduce the size of the bag when it’s empty, and let you dial in a snug fit for your gear when full. 500D CORDURA nylon construction and YKK zippers protect its contents even during the harshest of commutes. A shoulder strap also lets the Hip Monkey ride across your chest if fanny pack carry isn’t your style. No matter how you wear it, this sling is ready to help get the monkey off your back (and out of your pockets) and into its versatile stores. You can pick one up in three colors at the link below.

If you’re looking for a versatile and compact sling bag for everyday carry, but you’re worried about having to compromise the safety of fragile gear that you put inside, then the new Hazard 4 Bandoleer is worth a look. Unlike other EDC sling bags, the Bandoleer leverages Hazard 4’s expertise in thermoforming synthetic material in order to provide a durable hardshell EDC bag that gives you the durability of a professional camera bag without the heft and bulk. The tactical design also allows for excellent modularity, and its overbuilt design makes it more than a match for your daily excursions, whether they take you to the great outdoors or just around the corner while running errands.

The most distinct feature of the Hazard 4 Bandoleer is the molded hardshell construction of the bag itself. The technique involved turns the already-durable and water-resistant 1000D CORDURA fabric into something even more ready to deal with the scraps of daily use. With 2 liters of space, there’s enough room for your essential tech and carry gear without weighing you down and ruining your mobility.

The bag features internal organization spaces for smaller items like stationery, keys, and small flashlights. There’s also a dedicated space that’s compatible with hook and loop holsters for defensive CCW needs. The exterior of the bag is also further extensible with Hazard 4’s HardPoint hardware accessories. And for a bag that’s designed around fast-paced activities, it’s streamlined enough to avoid flapping around in the wind if you wear it on a ride. And the versatile main strap is designed for easy switching between your left and right side for ambidextrous operation.

If your EDC includes valuable electronics like cameras and small tablets, the Hazard 4 Bandoleer gives you peace of mind as you go about your daily business. It’s available today in both black and coyote tan, so click the link below and make one yours today.
