It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

I think it is easy to say that CPM MagnaCut has become the most sought-after everyday carry steel for enthusiasts who demand the best out of their pocket knives. While plenty of knives have featured MagnaCut in their design, the industry has focused on putting out tactical knives and minimalist folders. The time is ripe for someone to cater to those who prefer a more traditional look, and CRKT delivers precisely that with the new Redemption knife. It’s a bonus that Ken Onion, one of my favorite custom knifemakers, designed the Redemption, adding another knife to his long string of successes over the years.

A knife like the Redemption shows you can have beautiful, classic styling without compromising performance. It looks like an old-timer knife but has modern performance materials and made-in-America attention to detail at its heart. The highlight is the Redemption’s 4.06” CPM MagnaCut blade with far superior hardness and edge retention than older knives. The handle inlay on the Redemption features G-10 handle scales for enhanced grip, and the stainless steel bolster also contains the Crossbar Lock for security and one-handed operation.

What we like: The solid mix of modern premium materials with classic styling makes the Redemption an excellent option for everyday carry. It even comes with a deep carry pocket clip, eliminating the need for a belt holster like you usually find on a traditional gent’s pocket knife. Also interesting—though understandably polarizing—is that the Redemption’s blade doesn’t come with the usual deployment methods like thumb studs or a cutout; it gets deployed by way of disengaging the Crossbar Lock and flicking it out.

What to watch out for: At 4.90 oz, this is a heavy pocket knife, but you get a lot of performance for that weight, and the materials used provide lots of confidence when you use it. It’s also pretty limited while also being popular, so watch out for any announcements or restocks.

Final verdict: The CRKT Redemption comes from the mind of one of the best knife makers in the business. It also comes with one of the best steels you can pick for your everyday carry today. Choosing the Redemption is easy if you prefer the classic look without compromise.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

MagnaCut has become the everyday carry knife community’s favorite steel of choice this year (for good reason), and the new James Brand Wells adds a minimalist folder to the mix. The Wells is The James Brand’s first rear flipper design, eschewing the front flipper and manual activation of their previous models. The index flipper is one of the most intuitive of the flipper deployment mechanisms, and it means most EDC enthusiasts will be able to bring the Wells and its MagnaCut blade to bear faster than ever.

Each Wells knife is machined and assembled in the USA, which aligns well with the knife’s story since MagnaCut also originates from the United States. In the Wells, The James Brand has forged it into a modified 2.875″ sheepsfoot-slash-wharncliffe shape well-suited for everyday cutting and slicing utility tasks.

The wire pocket clip comprises 420 stainless steel, and the aerospace grade 6061 aluminum handle contains ball bearings in the pivot for smooth action. A button lock (another modern knife feature favorite) completes the mix, creating a secure, right-handed carry blade in two colorways to best match your carry.

What we like: While some prefer the cleaner lines of a front-flipper design, the index flipper style is much easier to deploy for most users, and its inclusion in this quality EDC folder is a positive development. It’s also nice to see James Brand occasionally break their mold and try new things, especially with exciting materials and functionality at play.

What to watch out for: This is a hefty knife at 3.3 ounces in weight compared to other MagnaCut folders (and even some fixed blades) available today that manage to get things below two ounces. Still, the sum of its parts makes it a worthwhile carry in our book.

Final verdict: If you’ve been hunting for a premium minimalist MagnaCut folding knife, look no further than the new James Brand Wells flipper knife.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Earlier this year, Hogue released their Deka MagnaCut Knife, a made-in-the-USA EDC folder featuring cutting-edge blade steel and superb performance. Now the folks at Hogue have made a great thing even better by releasing an exclusive edition of the Deka MagnaCut that showcases beautiful and durable Ultem material for the knife handle. The translucent yellow handle allows you to see the super-premium blade steel, even with the blade closed.

Like MagnaCut stainless steel, synthetic Ultem material has taken the EDC world by storm, and a lot of everyday carry gear made nowadays features it because of the weight savings, stability, and durability of the material itself compared to traditional materials. On the Hogue Deka MagnaCut knife, the Ultem edition weighs in at 2.1 oz compared to the original Allen Eishewitz design’s 2.4 oz. When you EDC a lot of gear, weight savings are welcome, particularly when it does not negatively impact performance.

And on the Hogue Deka MagnaCut Ultem knife, you get that in spades. Whether you opt for the 3.25” Wharncliffe or clip-point blade, the Deka can cut through your daily tasks while retaining a sharp edge. And the same ambidextrous ABLE-lock featured in the original is seen here, making it a joy to use with either hand.

What we like: The addition of Ultem to the premium MagnaCut stainless steel featured in this made-in-the-USA folding knife makes this the definitive version of the Hogue Deka MagnaCut.

What to watch out for: Because of the Ultem material, you must like the yellow translucent look if you buy this knife. If that does not work, consider picking up the regular Hogue Deka MagnaCut knife instead.

Final verdict: It’s rare to see an EDC-friendly knife become even better, but Hogue has managed to do that with the new Ultem edition of the Deka MagnaCut knife. It’s available exclusively at BladeHQ, and you’ll want to pick one up sooner rather than later before they sell out.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you’re unfamiliar with CPM’s new MagnaCut steel, it’s one of the newest and most exciting blade steels released in the past few years. It stands out from the pack for not focusing exclusively on high hardness like some premium steels. Instead, it focuses on being all-around good blade steel for just about every blade shape, type, and profile while having maximum sharpness and stain resistance compared to traditional stainless steel. And steel like that can take old classics and give them a new life, just as Kershaw has done by featuring CPM MagnaCut on their venerable Leek folding knife this year.

For more than a decade, the made-in-the-USA Kershaw Leek has remained one of the best EDC knives you can buy, and it’s seen a lot of variations and improvements that have only made it better over the years. This new rendition of the blade features the premium CPM MagnaCut stainless steel in its original hollow-ground Wharncliffe blade shape designed initially by custom knifemaker Ken Onion all those years ago. The organic shape of the 3” blade is enhanced by the superior cutting power of the MagnaCut steel, making it all the better in this modern iteration.

Accenting the stonewashed blade is the dual-tone red and black aluminum handle, which conceals a secure liner-lock, and the SpeedSafe flipper-assisted opening has made this knife one of the easiest and fastest to add to your everyday carry. There’s also a tiny thumbstud that allows for a more considered, but still quick, opening. The right-handed pocket clip accommodates either tip-up or tip-down carry, and you can secure the blade closed in your pockets with the discreet tip lock built into the handle.

What we like: The venerable Kershaw Leek gets new life by adding super-premium CPM MagnaCut steel in this new variation. Whether you have a collection of Leeks or want to make this the first one, it’s an excellent knife to carry.

What to watch out for: The dual-tone red and black aluminum handle isn’t for everyone and may be too loud or flashy for your style. Also, unlike some of the more modern Leeks that have come out over the years, this MagnaCut Leek does not have a frame lock, and if you liked the Reverse Leek’s reverse tanto blade shape, that does not feature in this knife.

Final verdict: The Kershaw Leek MagnaCut is likely the definitive version of the venerable and top-rated Leek folding knife. Its close adherence to the original knife adds a touch of nostalgia, and we hope that the new premium MagnaCut steel features in more Kershaw knives, both new and old, in the future.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

When Crucible’s latest and greatest steel hit the market, knife enthusiasts and collectors had a reason to be excited. The new steel—dubbed MagnaCut—was a true evolution of metallurgy. Without nerding out too much on the details (the creator, Larrin Thomas, goes into extensive detail himself in a blog post about the creation of the steel), MagnaCut’s goal was to combine and balance the best parts of the best steels into a one. The result was a powder stainless steel that had incredible toughness and edge retention while still having amazing corrosion resistance, second only to specialized corrosion-resistant steels like Vanax or LC200N.

The story of MagnaCut is a long and interesting one (again, see the article linked above), but anyone’s initial conclusion would be that this performance would demand a premium price. And initially, it did, in its early appearances in one-offs and customs. Thankfully, Hogue Knives has made it possible to own the very best steel without having to sell a kidney.

At under $150 the USA-made Deka has been making all sorts of waves in the community as one of the best ways to dip your toes into MagnaCut, offering the steel itself in two popular shapes—clip point and wharncliffe—as well as a handful of color options for its polymer handle and blade. Even better, the Deka is for all knife users, thanks to Hogue’s take on the crossbar lock called the ABLE-Lock. This makes the knife not only a great place to start a knife collection, but one you can end on, as well.

What we like: Affordable MagnaCut in an attractive, ambidextrous knife. Seriously, what’s not to like?

What to watch out for: Polymer handles aren’t everyone’s cup of tea since they can be flexible, but for all practical purposes it won’t get in the way of normal EDC use. The Deka is also understandably very popular at the moment so stocks may be an issue in the short term.

Final verdict: An ideal candidate for a one-knife collection.

Sometimes all it takes is one look at a knife’s design and its credentials to determine it will be an instant classic. After a string of incredibly popular debut knives, Tactile Knife Co. shake the market up again with their Maverick premium folding everyday carry knife. With the Maverick, you get a beautiful knife made in collaboration with custom knifemaker Richard Rogers. You get a premium and sizeable MagnaCut steel blade in a versatile shape. You get a secure ambidextrous crossbar lock. And like their pens and other knives and collaborations, you even get to choose between a minimalist titanium handle scale or a more grippy Micarta treatment based on what you have in mind for EDC.

The star of the show, of course, is the Maverick‘s blade steel. MagnaCut is a next-generation stainless steel that functionally replaces S30V and other ubiquitous Crucible steels on the EDC market today. And Tactile Knife Co. has heat treated the 3.6″ MagnaCut blade on the Maverick to an extremely impressive 63-64 Rockwell hardness. The Maverick is a folding knife with a keen maximum sharpness that will hold an edge far longer than most steels. The only downside is it will take some elbow grease to sharpen this knife when you eventually manage to dull it, but the extra effort is well worth it.

Tactile Knife Co. manufactures all of its cutlery here in the United States at its Texas machine shop. The quality and attention to detail are immediately apparent, especially in minor details like the shape of the pivot cover and the thumbstud, to say the least of Tactile’s overall design language, like in the handle grooves. The Maverick ticks all the boxes for an incredibly performant EDC knife and will be a pleasure for you to use and pocket for years to come, and like most of Tactile’s products, of an heirloom heritage that can stand the test of trends and time. Click the link below to join the waiting list to secure a spot for the Maverick today.
