It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you’ve been following us for a while, then you’d know that not all flashlights are created equal. This is especially true for long-throw flashlights, which serve a specific purpose that flood lights or general-use flashlights can’t fulfill. The RovyVon S21 is a high-performance flashlight with a unique design, a super bright LED, and a long throw beam, among other compelling features. But these aren’t the only characteristics that set it apart from other long-throw lights we’ve tested.

The RovyVon S21 is made of high-quality aluminum treated with Micro-Arc Oxidation (MAO),  an electrochemical process that produces oxide protective coatings. This adds a hard, durable coating that prevents overheating, withstands daily wear, and enhances both its modern aesthetic and corrosion resistance. It uses a high-performance Luminus SFT-70 6500K LED, which produces an astounding maximum output of 3000 lumens. This LED features a round light-emitting surface, creating an extremely uniform beam and providing excellent color rendering. While it packs a punch, the flashlight still manages to have a handheld size of 5.6 x 1.1” while weighing a mere 116 grams (without its battery), making it easy to carry and use.

Long-throw lights are helpful for long-distance surveys, scoping out dimly lit roads, or when you need to illuminate a hiking path ahead. The S21’s high-intensity beam can reach up to 400m, which is suitable for most situations. The flashlight’s tight beam angle ensures a focused and concentrated light.

Another feature that sets the RovyVon S21 apart is its intuitive mechanical rotary switch. You can rotate the switch to get the brightness level you need, from Eco (30 lumens) to High (1000 lumens). You can also press and hold the metal switch to activate the Turbo mode (3000 lumens) when needed. A power indicator tells you how much battery is left every time you turn it on and also shows you the charging status when you plug in the USB-C cable to recharge the included 5000mAh battery, which can be fully charged in just 2.5 hours.

It has an IPX8 waterproof rating, which means it can be submerged in water up to 2m for 30 minutes. Like most flashlights in its category, it also has a strong magnet at the tail cap, which allows you to attach it to any metal surface for hands-free use. You can also use the included lanyard or pocket clip for extra carry options.

What we like: We love the look (and feel) of the Micro-Arc Oxidation treatment, and the fact that it adds another level of durability is a great plus.

What to watch out for: It’s not the most compact mini flashlight in its class, and it also carries a higher price than other flashlights with similar features.

Final verdict: Combining durability, performance, and aesthetics in a small package, the RovyVon S21 is packed with features that make it an excellent choice for those looking for a long-throw flashlight.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you’re the kind of person who needs Nitro Cold Brew and lots of it, we’ve got just the thing for your everyday carry. While the Tactile Turn Nitro Seasonal Release won’t automatically make and dispense coffee for you, it does celebrate our shared love for coffee, the drink that makes the world go round.

It starts with their Side Click Titanium body, with a rich dark brown Cerakote finish and cream-colored hardware that evokes a dark brew and the light splash of milk you get in a good latte. And as masterfully crafted as latte artwork, a lightning bolt mug design is precision engraved on the pocket clip. The Nitro Seasonal Release is also available in Tactile’s Slim Click profile if you prefer a slimmer pen. Both versions come in Standard, Short, and Mini lengths to meet your needs. Remember that the Parker-style refills work on Standard and Short, but the Mini uses the exclusive but smooth-writing Pilot G2 mini refills.

Like all Tactile Seasonal Releases, you have a limited time to order the pen, but you’re good to go as long as you order before December 31st. Pull two big shots and send it in by tonight because the Tactile Nitro Side Click Seasonal Pen is your perfect companion for your next trip to the coffeehouse.

What we like: Aside from the playful coffee lover’s aspect of this pen, the golden brown Cerakote body of the Nitro is excellently crafted with undertones that make it more than just a paint job.

What to watch out for: Tactile has also released an optional ceramic Diner Mug and a coffee bag of premium beans from Voltage Coffee Project in Decatur, Texas. It’s currently sold out, but there will be a second batch coming soon that you can look out for.

Final verdict: You don’t have to like coffee to like this pen, but it doesn’t hurt. Tactile Seasonal Releases continue to deliver, and this pen is an excellent opportunity during the holiday gift season to spruce up someone’s everyday carry, especially if it’s for yourself.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Headlamps can be helpful in various situations, whether you’re out night fishing, setting up a campsite after dusk, hiking an unfamiliar path, or working in a dimly lit area. The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light adds some versatility to your standard headlamp because instead of having to wear it with a harness, you can clip it on your cap, attach it to your backpack, or wear it on your headband like a traditional headlamp while still enjoying hands-free lighting.

The NU11 has two types of light, white and red, with white light featuring two additional modes: high and low. In high mode, the NU11 can produce up to 150 lumens of brightness, reaching a distance of up to 55 yards. In low mode, the light produces up to 45 lumens of brightness, better suited for close-range tasks while saving battery power. The red light also has two modes: constant-on and flashing. The constant-on mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which is ideal for preserving your night vision or reading maps. The flashing mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which can serve as a signal or emergency light.

At only 1.45 oz, the Nitecore NU11 is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around on treks. Despite its small size, battery life remains impressive. It can last up to 30 hours in 4-lumen, constant-on red light mode, 6 hours in 45-lumen Low white light mode, and 2.5 hours on High white light mode. A handy indicator will let you know when it needs recharging, with a full charge achieved in only 2 hours via a fast-charging USB-C port.

One of the most useful features of the Nitecore NU11 is its infrared motion sensor, which you can activate by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. Once the sensor is on, you can turn the NU11 on and off with a simple wave of your hand within 10cm (about 4”) of the sensor. This feature comes in handy (or should I say, no-handy?) when your hands are dirty or occupied. You can also use the power button to adjust the brightness settings or switch to the red light mode.

What we like: Clip it on your cap for a direct and focused beam or attach it to your pack for a wider and diffused beam. This versatility and compact “clip-anywhere” feature makes it easy to recommend for your next adventure.

What to watch out for: The motion sensor can be accidentally triggered by other objects or movements, such as your hair or hat. Thankfully, you can switch the IR sensor off if you don’t need it by pressing the power button for 3 seconds.

Final verdict: The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light is a versatile and convenient clip-on light that you can attach to various surfaces, giving you hands-free lighting that significantly enhances your outdoor experience.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

(Editor’s note 11/13/23: The Hybrid Work Duo is now available and shipping directly from Orbitkey’s main site. The links in this post have been changed to point to the official product category page.)

For digital nomads, it’s essential to keep EDC simple. When items can play more roles than one, including them in our everyday carry is more valuable and practical. That’s why the dual nature of the upcoming Orbitkey Hybrid Work Duo works so well for people who rely on tech on the go. It’s a high-quality laptop sleeve that doubles as a classy and durable desk mat for hybrid remote working conditions, whether at a coworking space, a spot at a local bar or coffee shop, or a desk at home.

The Orbitkey Hybrid Work Duo consists of what they call the Hybrid Laptop Sleeve and the Orbitkey Compendium. It’s a two-part recipe for mobile working success. The Hybrid Laptop Sleeve is as it sounds: a leatherbound laptop sleeve with a unique twist. Once you take your up to 16-inch laptop out of the sleeve, it unfolds to provide you a clean and stable desk mat experience to organize your desk and let you use a mouse too. Alongside the Hybrid Laptop Sleeve is the Orbitkey Compendium, which, like the Hybrid Laptop Sleeve, is made out of vegan leather but also contains an A4 or A5 compatible pocket for a notebook and assorted payment and identification cards.

Each item would work well independently, but both are now available by securing a pledge on Orbitkey’s open Kickstarter. Orbitkey has a long track history of delivering quality everyday carry products to market, and these two items promise to provide the same quality experience that the community has come to expect from Orbitkey.

What we like: Together as the Orbitkey Hybrid Work Duo, the Laptop Sleeve and Compendium come together as a highly practical yet extremely aesthetic work-from-home (or work from anywhere) set of EDC gear.

What to watch out for: Standard crowdfunding disclaimer here, so just be aware of how pledging on Kickstarter works. Because Orbitkey is releasing the Hybrid Work Duo as part of a Kickstarter campaign, you may have to wait longer than traditional gear releases to get these items in your hand. Thankfully Orbitkey has a rich history of designing successful EDC products and delivering on their promises.

Final verdict: If you’re looking to protect and organize your tech every day carry as your work-from-home or work remotely, the Orbitkey Hybrid Work Duo is your faithful companion as you go from place to place.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Pocket knives are one of the most popular everyday carry items. You’ll find them in the pockets of people who don’t even know what everyday carry is. But one of the best parts of everyday carry is the opportunity to carry something a bit different, something that marks your gear as uniquely “you.” One way to make such a statement is with an innovative, distinctly designed knife like the Böker Plus S-Rail.

When you look at the Böker Plus S-Rail, you’ll see it’s like no other knife on the market. This compact knife is a Darriel Caston design and features a sliding rail lock opening. You open the knife with the thumb stud and push the blade forward along its namesake rail built into the very slim G-10 handle.

The closest thing to it is an out-the-front automatic, but this is a much more everyday carry-friendly pocket knife because it is a manually activated opening with no springs that can get you in trouble in some areas. The blade is a utility-oriented, thick, chunky D2 steel. Despite its beefy profile, the S-Rail weighs only 0.88 oz, making it one of the lightest pocket knives you can carry today.

What we like: With its unique opening and locking mechanism, which eliminates the need for a heavy frame and handle scale, the Böker Plus S-Rail is exceptionally lightweight and everyday carry-friendly.

What to watch out for: Because of the exposed nature of the blade in the closed position, the S-Rail omits having a well-defined point. If you use a knife to pierce through material more than you chop or slice, you may encounter difficulty using the knife.

Final verdict: The Böker Plus S-Rail, designed by Darriel Caston, is one of the most exciting and innovative everyday carry pocket knives available right now, and the best part is that it’s relatively affordable to boot.

If your everyday carry includes cameras, lenses, and other delicate electronics, you know how important it is to protect those items as you take them from place to place daily. And that’s why padded protective inserts like the Peak Design Camera Cube V2 are so helpful. They allow you to use the bag of your choice while keeping your core essential tech safe and sound and separated from the rest of your gear.

Recently, Peak Design has updated its Camera Cube line, and we particularly like the bag’s new ‘extra small’ version. The X-Small Peak Design Camera Cube V2 fits a small mirrorless or compact camera kit. It features a wholly recycled and weatherproof 160D nylon canvas shell and weatherproof Ultra Zips to keep the elements out when you have them outside. And weighing just 150 grams when empty, it doesn’t add too much heft to your regular everyday carry ensemble, like other camera inserts, dedicated photography, and tech bags tend to do.

And because the insert is water-resistant by itself, you could opt to attach a Peak Design strap to its anchor points and carry it as a standalone bag. Either way, the unique versatility and practicality of the Peak Design X-Small Camera Cube V2 are compelling, even if you don’t carry a camera or drone regularly. Small tech essentials need protection, and you can easily accomplish that by adding a Peak Design Extra Small Camera Cube to your everyday carry.

What we like: These “extra small” proportions of the Peak Design Camera Cube V2 make it the most everyday carry-friendly option to fit into any bag or pack.

What to watch out for: The Peak Design Camera Cubes are only available in black, which might not match your aesthetic or the bag or pack you will use with the padded insert.

Final verdict: With the Peak Design X-Small Camera Cube V2, it’s easy to keep your most valuable tech and photography essentials safe from everyday bumps and scrapes. With Peak Design standing behind all of its products with a solid lifetime warranty, you can rely on this padded insert bag through thick and thin in the years to come.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Pouches are perfect for keeping your gear organized, but once you start having more than one, it can sometimes be challenging to remember what you’ve put inside. Also, if you buy the same pouch, everything starts looking the same, and you have to search through a few organizer pouches before finding the gear you are looking for. In that case, consider an everyday carry pouch with a transparent window, like the new Think Tank Photo Cable Management 5 Clear Pouch.

The Cable Management 5 features a transparent 0.4mm PFT sheet on the sides of the zippered organizer and durable 210D x 320D double diamond ripstop nylon everywhere else to hold the pouch together. ThinkTank is a renowned maker of bags and accessories for photographers with many charging cables, batteries, and other small gear that must be organized and kept separate from delicate cameras, lenses, and tech equipment. But with the amount of tech everyone uses every day, that may also describe your own everyday carry needs. While you might not have cameras and lenses in your everyday carry, the practicality of the ThinkTank Photo Cable Management Clear Pouch’s design still offers substantial benefits for everyday carry.

With its wide, durable YKK RC zippered openings and clear front and back panels, you can quickly identify the contents of your organizer pouches without wasting time digging through them. Each clear pouch also comes with 3 of Think Tank’s high-visibility Red Whip cable managers to prevent tangling over time in your bag and pack. For added protection, each Cable Management 5 Clear Pouch has a durable water-repellant (DWR) coating to keep out the elements.

What we like: We particularly like the Think Tank Photo Cable Management 5 for everyday carry use. Its small size and lightweight 2 oz heft add little bulk compared to other organizer pouches on the market.

What to watch out for: The Cable Management 5 uses YKK RC zippers, which boast excellent durability and abrasion resistance. However, they are less water resistant than YKK AquaGuard zippers and have a different look to them.

Final verdict: The clear side panels of the Think Tank Photo Cable Management 5 and the rest of this line are well-suited for practical everyday carry use. Seeing the gear you have packed inside can save you from fumbling around as you look for a small item in your bag or pack.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

I think it is easy to say that CPM MagnaCut has become the most sought-after everyday carry steel for enthusiasts who demand the best out of their pocket knives. While plenty of knives have featured MagnaCut in their design, the industry has focused on putting out tactical knives and minimalist folders. The time is ripe for someone to cater to those who prefer a more traditional look, and CRKT delivers precisely that with the new Redemption knife. It’s a bonus that Ken Onion, one of my favorite custom knifemakers, designed the Redemption, adding another knife to his long string of successes over the years.

A knife like the Redemption shows you can have beautiful, classic styling without compromising performance. It looks like an old-timer knife but has modern performance materials and made-in-America attention to detail at its heart. The highlight is the Redemption’s 4.06” CPM MagnaCut blade with far superior hardness and edge retention than older knives. The handle inlay on the Redemption features G-10 handle scales for enhanced grip, and the stainless steel bolster also contains the Crossbar Lock for security and one-handed operation.

What we like: The solid mix of modern premium materials with classic styling makes the Redemption an excellent option for everyday carry. It even comes with a deep carry pocket clip, eliminating the need for a belt holster like you usually find on a traditional gent’s pocket knife. Also interesting—though understandably polarizing—is that the Redemption’s blade doesn’t come with the usual deployment methods like thumb studs or a cutout; it gets deployed by way of disengaging the Crossbar Lock and flicking it out.

What to watch out for: At 4.90 oz, this is a heavy pocket knife, but you get a lot of performance for that weight, and the materials used provide lots of confidence when you use it. It’s also pretty limited while also being popular, so watch out for any announcements or restocks.

Final verdict: The CRKT Redemption comes from the mind of one of the best knife makers in the business. It also comes with one of the best steels you can pick for your everyday carry today. Choosing the Redemption is easy if you prefer the classic look without compromise.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The next time you venture out into the great outdoors, you can take pride in the fact that you’re doing your part in preserving it when you use the CamelBak A.T.P. (Adventure Travel Pack) 20 backpack. Made from 100% post-industrial recycled re/cor CORDURA, the undyed version of the pack emits half the greenhouse gas emissions and requires less power and water to manufacture than traditional processes, making it the first pack to earn the highest rating on CamelBak’s sustainability and environmental standards scale.

Besides being sustainable, the A.T.P. 20 is as rugged as they come. The 100% post-industrial recycled 210D CORDURA re/cor Nylon 6 material is ultra-tough and resistant to abrasion, tears, and scuffs while remaining lighter than the common weights seen in everyday carry backpacks. The main compartment (lined with the same recycled 210D) can fit up to 20L of gear, while its removable laptop sleeve can accommodate most laptops up to 15”. The pack also has a luggage passthrough that allows you to slide it over the handle of your roller bag for easy travel and deployable straps that you can use to secure your equipment. Hypalon lashing points provide more attachment options.

Other compartments include an expandable bottle pocket, a large side pocket with an internal key clip that can store your essentials such as your phone, wallet, or passport, and a soft-lined pocket to protect your shades from scratches. The pack is compatible with up to a 3L CamelBak reservoir, which is sold separately to stay hydrated on longer treks.

What we like: It’s got the organizing versatility we’ve come to love in our favorite backpacks, and CamelBak’s commitment to sustainability is something we’ll always get behind.

What to watch out for: We wish it had some external loops for attaching extra gear or accessories. Also, if you’re getting the undyed pack, keep in mind that on rare occasions, undyed fabrics may undergo light yellowing over time.

Final verdict: Whether you’re hiking, biking, camping, or commuting, the CamelBak A.T.P. 20 is a “do-it-all” backpack that you can feel good about buying.

The post The Drop: Cotopaxi Allpa Roller Bag appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

With its ergonomic design and clever organization features, the best-selling Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack has been a popular choice for quick, rugged excursions. For long-distance travel, however, you’d want to put your items in a travel roller to avoid carrying all that weight on your back and shoulders.

The Cotopaxi Allpa Roller Bag takes everything great about the Allpa pack to the next level by making it a full-fledged roller. It hasn’t forgotten its rugged pedigree, either. Large, sturdy wheels and an extendable handle make it easy to roll over cobbled streets, dirt roads, and stairs. And if you need to, you can also carry it as a backpack, thanks to the molded EVA back panel and padded shoulder straps that tuck away when not in use, making it a best-of-both-worlds travel solution.

The Allpa is made from high-quality materials that are both eco-friendly and resilient. The main body uses 100% recycled 840D nylon with a water-resistant TPU coating, while the secondary body uses 100% recycled 840D ballistic nylon with a ripstop weave. The lining is also 100% recycled ripstop polyester. These fabrics are sourced from pre-consumer waste, meaning they’re leftovers from other production processes that would otherwise end up in landfills.

The Allpa Roller Bag has a split case design that allows you to organize your belongings in two separate compartments, separated by mesh dividers. A top accessory pocket gives you quick access to your essentials, such as your passport, wallet, phone, and keys. It has 38L of available space, which I find is perfect for a 3-day getaway.

Multiple grab handles make it easy to lift it in and out of overhead bins or car trunks. It’s also carry-on compatible, so you can avoid the hassle of checking in your luggage. For longer trips or more packing space, a larger 65L size is available, too.

What we like: It combines many things we want to see in our gear: 100% recycled materials, rugged durability, and thoughtful organization features.

What to watch out for: It has no laptop compartment, so be prepared to leave your work behind. And while you can use it as a backpack, it won’t be a very comfortable carry.

Final verdict: The Cotopaxi Allpa Roller Bag combines the features of a backpack and a suitcase, making it a great all-in-one solution for your next adventure.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you look at the wrists of many modern everyday carry watch enthusiasts, you’ll notice that the panda dial chronograph has found itself in a resurging trend. A panda dial consists of a white or silver dial on a watch with dark black subdials for the chronograph complication. The contrast between light and dark looks similar to the face of a panda, lending the look its name. And while the panda dial has become popular in the everyday carry watch community because of unattainable watches that will cost you a second mortgage, the Timex Marlin Chronograph Tachymeter lets you get the look for far less and continues the brand’s consistency for strong releases and collaborations this year.

The Timex Marlin Chronograph Tachymeter has an Art Deco look that holds its own, so while it’s reminiscent of luxury watches, it’s not a copy or a homage. The striking typeface used for the Arabic hour markers at the 12, 3, and 9 o’clock positions are unique, and they are easily identifiable at a glance thanks to the application of high-contrast black rectangular highlights around them. The same goes for the black subdials, making it easy to read the chronograph complication without too much effort. The black outer tachymeter helps give the watch its name, letting you calculate speeds quickly.

With a case diameter of 40mm and a lug width of 20mm, this watch will work on most people’s wrists. Its compatibility with a wide range of straps makes it versatile, from dress to casual wear based on your mood. Its reliable quartz movement will keep time better than some of the most expensive mechanical and automatic watches at a fraction of the cost.

What we like: The classic Art Deco look and reliable quartz design of the Timex Marlin Chronograph offer excellent functionality and value for money.

What to watch out for: With a water resistance of only 50m, you should take this watch off before taking your next plunge into the pool or the ocean.

Final verdict: The Timex Marlin Chronograph is an elevated quartz timepiece that gives you a classic look without bidding for a classic watch at auction. Even better, you can buy one today online. The emergence of multi-layer laminate material has been a boon to everyday carry enthusiasts searching for a lightweight bag or pack. The thin yet durable and water-resistant construction of the layers of material helps reduce the initial heft of a bag. Adding it to existing bag designs, with some tweaks, is also a winning recipe. That’s what Chrome Industries has done with their Bravo 4.0 backpack. This fourth iteration of their classic urban and bike-oriented rolltop bag features the lightweight construction modern everyday carry demands, with added organizational space inside to boot.

Where the original Bravo designs from Chrome Industries featured a large main compartment, it was lacking for anyone looking for interior and exterior organizational space. With the Bravo 4.0, Chrome Industries added a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to a 17″ desktop computer replacement laptop (a feat few packs attempt). There’s a new zippered tech organizer compartment in the front, but the best addition is the side water bottle pocket, letting you stay hydrated on your commute, whether on two legs or wheels.

What we like: The laminate material allows this large 24-35L backpack to weigh just 2.82 pounds fully unloaded. Compare that to 5 or 6 pounds with a similarly-sized ballistic nylon bag, and you have all-day wearability with space to spare. It’s even sustainable, with its layers composed of recycled nylon and polyester.

What to watch out for: Chrome Industries bills this bag as water-resistant, not waterproof. But with its rolltop design and quality materials, you should get through the urban rain without a hitch.

Final verdict: The Bravo 4.0 is ready to be your next lightweight everyday carry go-to item. With its large capacity, innovative design additions, and lightweight materials, it’s hard to pass up if you’re looking for an urban commute bag this season.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Opting for an automatic mechanical watch involves having movements with lots of gears, springs, rotors, and other pieces to work. Where a standard quartz movement condenses all that into a circuit board, part of the allure of having an automatic watch is the mechanism itself, but that mechanism requires a slightly bigger watch, and that bigger size impacts the overall weight. But watches like the new Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic keep the weight down by using the namesake titanium material instead.

The bead-blasted titanium case allows the 41mm diameter Expedition North to have a heft that wears smaller than its size. In its larger form, however, you get 200 meters of water resistance, which is a lot for a field watch. The larger space also enables more shock resistance for the Japanese automatic movement inside, powering the highly-legible three-hand watch. The dial features Arabic legends, with a Timex Expedition logo at the top. There’s a date window at the 3 o’clock position for your convenience. The hands are big and bright in regular light, and in the dark, the hours, hands, and markers feature Swiss Super-LumiNova lume to make it readable in low-light situations. An exhibition caseback is the final stylish flair to the watch, letting you take a peek into its automatic engine.

What we like: The handsome recycled ocean plastic strap is sustainable for the environment, and it also features easy removal from the 20mm lugs for swapping it out with other straps based on your style and mood.

What to watch out for: Traditional watch enthusiasts tend to have a problem with titanium watches. To them, the lightness is indicative of poor quality and a cheap feeling. But in everyday carry, we know that finding the best materials is part of finding the best tools to do the job, and a titanium watch like the Timex Expedition North Automatic allows for serious weight savings and overall comfort on your wrist.

Final verdict: The Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic 41mm is a highly easy-to-read field watch featuring a lightweight titanium case, a quality Japanese automatic movement, and a sapphire glass crystal at an attainable price.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Vosteed are on a roll this year, considering they first popped up on our radar late last year with a flashlight, then fast became a favorite knifemaker (for me especially) with their fidget- and budget-friendly models like the Corgi and the Raccoon. Designer Yue Dong and his team aren’t showing any signs of showing down, and the return of a fan-favorite model has me pretty excited.

The Thunderbird was an earlier model in their catalog, with a sleek, tanto-styled blade in S35VN and a larger 3.48” profile with Gmascus (G-10 laminate with a topo pattern) handle scales that contained Vosteed’s patent-pending Trek button lock, which, while not truly ambidextrous, can still comfortably be operated by either hand and still does the job of keeping your fingers away when closing up the blade. Inherent fidget friendliness was also the Thunderbird’s claim to fame, with three ways to flick it open between front and rear jimping and a thumb hole punctuating the end of the blade’s fuller.

The knife returns in a slightly smaller but more premium iteration, now with a top-tier M390 steel making up a 3.25” blade. Gmascus handles make a return with shuffled colorways (three available right now, with the blue/black one coming on November 7th), but this is shaping up to be every bit the fun, fidgetable knife as its larger predecessor.

What we like: Premium steel, a new take on G-10, and three ways to play—what’s not to like?

What to watch out for: The four base models are already good, but I can’t help but get hyped for the titanium variants coming on the 7th as well, which come with ELMAX steel and a frag pattern on the black variant’s scales. Watch this space for a hands-on when we’re able to grab one.

Final verdict: Time to get my flick on.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The fun and fabulous toys by our friends over at aroundsquare are best known for two things: a whole catalog worth of wearables and carryables to choose from, and being able to pick up most everything in that catalog in a range of materials from wood to the most exotic materials and alloys.

For their October drop, they’re cooking up even more material science with a healthy dose of polyetherimide (PEI), otherwise known more popularly as Ultem. To say that it’s made a splash in EDC is an understatement; its unique properties of high strength and rigidity give it exceptional stability even at very high temperatures, making it a sort of superplastic once it’s set. Matt (the founder of aroundsquare) has a great write-up about it in his e-mail announcing the drop.

As for the drop itself, there’s plenty to scope out and scoop up, Ultem or otherwise. Leading the pack are long and shortform “MKUltems,” my personal favorite wearable they offer, which also comes in both a matte machined finish and polished versions. There are Ultem begleris with the new apple-shaped Mílos beads, as well as in the larger Hardcore Titans variant. Last but not least are Ultem options for both the Banzhi ring and several Knucklebones, so there really is a lot in this drop to look out for if you want to get your amber game on.

What we like: Variety is the spice of life, and Ultem is just another great material option if you’re looking for the perfect mindfulness or meditation toy from aroundsquare. Bonus that it’s also particularly distinct in appearance without adding too much to the cost of a product, without any performance drawbacks.

What to watch out for: Some aroundsquare drops can get popular, and given Ultem’s, these could be snatched up quickly. Set those alarms for 7PM Pacific today, Friday the 27th, to get a jump on the release. Also, check out the other inclusions, like a new cashmere sweater and acrylic sets.

Final verdict: Amber is the color of our energy.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Fixed-blade knives have one significant advantage over their folding cousins: without an opening mechanism, they’re always ready for you to get to work. Their size and relative weight usually relegate them to dedicated outdoors, hunting, and survival roles, but knives like the SOG Ether FX flip that script.

The SOG Ether FX is skeletonized to reduce its weight to 2.1oz compared to a traditional hunter’s knife with brass bolsters and wood inlays, which can weigh much more. Instead, it comes with removable G-10 handle scales. Gone is a traditional fixed camping knife’s standard bulky leather belt sheath. In its place is a modern Kydex sheath with a secure belt loop and compatibility with SOG’s Universal Mounting System, which lets you attach it to bags, packs, and other accessories.

At the heart of the SOG Ether FX is the full-tang CPM S35VN stainless steel blade. S35VN is a quality blade steel that gets sharp and remains sharp enough for confident everyday carry use. With an overall length of 7.1” and a blade length of 3.1”, it’s perfect for everyday carry when you prefer a knife you don’t have to fiddle with to use.

What we like: The skeletonized design of the SOG Ether FX and the secure Kydex sheath make this a stellar everyday carry option for anyone wanting to add a fixed-blade knife to their ensemble.

What to watch out for: The bright orange G-10 handle scales make this knife easy to find in your bag or pack. The scales are removable if the orange aesthetic does not work for you. You can then wrap the handle with the material of your choice or leave it bare to save even more weight.

Final verdict: Smartly designed knives like the SOG Ether FX make carrying a fixed-blade knife easier, even when you’re not a regular outdoors person.

I love the sturdiness and feeling of quality metal mechanical pencils brought to the table, but the added weight sometimes means the pencil stays at my desk. And that’s a shame because mechanical pencils are the best option when doing work like quick math and temporary note-taking. The Titanium DraftTitan Mechanical Pencil by Maratac changes everything with a durable and beautiful spiral titanium body that’s only 1 oz.

The Grade 5 titanium body of the DraftTitan isn’t just for looks: it’s precision-machined and designed to reduce the overall weight of the pencil in your hand. This slim, sleek, and compact everyday carry writing implement measures 6” long, and it has a titanium clip that acts as a rolling stop for the pencil on your desk.

With its 2mm graphite core and smooth rear click activation, the DraftTitan is a joy to use. It comes with 12 spare refills for added convenience. Whether a mechanical pencil is your primary writing tool or backup, this new CountyComm exclusive mechanical pencil is a solid option for your next gear pickup.

What we like: The spiral titanium body lends an elegant, minimal look to the pencil, helping reduce its weight to just a single ounce. And at under 40 dollars as of this writing, it’s also great value for money.

What to watch out for: The Titanium DraftTitan Mechanical Pencil is only available in a serialized run of 1000 pencils at CountyComm. We can’t guarantee they’ll reappear, so if you want one for yourself, you should act sooner rather than later.

Final verdict: You get a quality everyday carry mechanical pencil when you opt for a Titanium DraftTitan Pencil made by Maratac for CountyComm. It’s one of the best options for new metal mechanical pencil pickups today.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

(Editor’s note 10/26/23: NORD is now selling their capsules directly from their website here; this article has been updated with the link along with updated details.)

Anyone who regularly uses fragrances knows they’ve never been the most carry-friendly items. Heavy, fragile bottles can break and spill liquid inside your bag, and the spray-nozzle function of your typical bottled fragrance means you’ll bombard your surrounding area with a heavy dose of fragrance whether you want to or not. NORD’s Pocket-sized Solidified Fragrance innovatively fixes all those problems by offering a fragrance designed for portability, durability, and discreetness–perfect for smelling great on the go.

NORD’s fragrance comes in the form of a highly-concentrated scented balm. Unlike traditional liquid colognes you’d need to spray, NORD’s concentrated balm can be used with a simple finger swipe and discreetly applied to any part of your skin.

The scent capsule itself comes in a steel case that’s small enough to fit in a coin pocket and is durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of daily use. Four cases are available: Jet Black, Graphite, Mirror, and a 1/100 limited edition Gold. There are three scents to choose from: Bonfire, Pepper Party, and Dancing Flowers. Each scent capsule can be interchanged with any case, with refills readily available when used up. NORD claims that each scent capsule lasts about six months before needing to be replaced.

What we like: NORD uses natural ingredients, which are great for sensitive skin. And since NORD’s scents come as solid balms, you don’t have to worry about taking them with you when flying to your next destination, as they’re all TSA-compliant.

What to watch out for: There are currently only three scent options, with hopefully more on the way. It should also be noted that replacement capsules will only be available from NORD, which will be sold for about $32 each. The aluminum capsules are also 100% recyclable, so they don’t add to environmental waste.

Final verdict: NORD tackles an everyday problem with an innovative solution, offering a truly EDC-friendly way to get your scent on no matter where you are.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Bulova has been making everyday carry timepieces and watches for decades, but their recent creations have marked a turn towards what EDC and watch enthusiasts have in mind. Gone are the big and bulky watches with garish colors, and in are watches like their new Oceanographer GMT. These vintage-inspired automatic mechanical movement watches are a sight to behold, and they’re a lot easier to find than looking at the used market for a watch that’s older than you.

The Bulova Oceanographer GMT is a variant of their “Devil Diver” automatic watch. It’s rated waterproof down to 666 feet, about 200 meters. I submit that it’s devilishly beautiful. It’s available in classic diver watch motifs, including the classic red/blue “Pepsi” design, a black/brown and rose gold-tone, and a vintage, yet sporty, off-white cream gunmetal release with a lume dial.

The stand-out feature of this watch is the GMT complication, which lets you use the GMT hand in conjunction with the rotating outer bezel to keep track of a different time zone and elapsed time at a glance. It takes some getting used to, but once you master the function, it’s faster to read the time than to ask Siri or Google what time it is back home when you’re on vacation, if you even have internet access in the first place.

What we like: With its vintage-inspired look and 666 feet of water resistance, the Bulova Oceanographer GMT brings a lot of performance and class to the table in a package that doesn’t require you to play the lottery or sit on a waitlist to wear.

What to watch out for: The 41mm case width is something to keep in mind if you have thinner wrists, but as a diver-style watch, it’s in line with expectations.

Final verdict: With its classic styling, quality Japanese Miyota 9075 movement, and beautiful waterproof case, there aren’t many things not to like about the Bulova Oceanographer GMT.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The Ledlenser HF6R Work headlamp is a versatile, hands-free lighting solution designed to work in harsh environments. It can throw a focused beam for long-rage tasks up to a distance of 160 meters thanks to its 800 lumens output, while a simple turn on its focus wheel switches to a soft and even flood light for close-up work. Three color modes are available: white, red, and natural light. The natural light mode has a high color rendering index (CRI), which helps you see colors more accurately and easily distinguish objects like cables or wires.

Working long hours won’t be a problem either. The Ledlenser HF6R Work headlamp is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery that can last up to eight hours at mid-power level and is charged via a magnetic USB-C cable for added convenience. The headlamp also has a battery and charge indicator, a low battery warning, and a backup mode that activates a low-power emergency safety light when the battery is almost out. Keeping the light from overheating is a temperature control system that actively cools the light, ensuring the longevity of its LEDs.

Its IP68 rating makes it fully dust-proof and certifies that it can withstand being in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. The HF6R Work variant includes various mounting options for helmets and a wall mount over the base HF6R Core variant, giving you more flexibility.

What we like: It has a 7-year warranty, which shows that Ledlenser stands behind the craftsmanship and quality of its products.

What to watch out for: It uses a proprietary magnetic charging cable. While convenient, you won’t be able to charge the light if you lose or damage the original cord.

Final verdict: With its selectable lighting modes, IP68 rating, and long-lasting battery, the Ledlenser HF6R Work headlamp is an excellent option for those looking for a reliable and versatile light source that can adapt to any work situation or preference.
