It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

A reliable and versatile outdoor knife can spell the difference between an enjoyable outdoor adventure and one you’d rather forget. The Gerber Terracraft is one such knife. Designed to handle any bushcraft challenge from fire starting to shelter building, this full tang fixed blade knife features an extra-thick 4.4” S30V steel blade that’s durable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to sharpen. Its drop point shape is as versatile as it gets for camping and bushcrafting, and its flat spine with a 90-degree edge can be effective for striking fire steel or scraping tinder.

Pulling it out of its American-made sheath, you’ll notice that this limited edition Terracraft’s handle is made of Micarta, a material known for its toughness, stability, and moisture resistance. It comes as a welcome alternative to the original Terracraft’s G-10 scales. The handle’s textured surface enhances grip and prevents slippage, while its contoured shape allows it to fit comfortably in the hand without hotspots even when using multiple grip styles. Micarta also feels more natural to the touch than G-10 and develops a patina unique to the user over time. To top (or end) things off, the handle’s pommel is hammer-ready and can be used to pound nails or stakes.

The Terracraft is part of the Gerber Reserve series, knives built in small batches in the USA to showcase Gerber’s craftsmanship and a more focused attention to detail for each knife they make. It was built from the ground up to best handle wet weather and demonstrate its usability in slippery conditions, making it the ideal choice for an outdoor knife when the environment becomes unpredictable.

What we like: While Gerber’s Terracraft line has always proven to be wilderness-ready, the Micarta handles make all the difference, especially in the wet.

What to watch out for: Gerber has multiple versions of their Terracraft, but this variant with Micarta handles is limited and exclusive to their website.

Final verdict: What more could you ask for from an outdoor knife? The Gerber Terracraft Micarta has the right combination of materials and solid build quality to provide years of service no matter where your adventures take you.

It’s National Knife Day, and you know we have to feature a slicer that’s been in our sights to celebrate. And what I’d like to feature today isn’t the most expensive, isn’t overflowing with top-tier materials, and isn’t changing the game with a completely unique design. In fact, it’s the complete antithesis of all that, which makes it my new favorite recommendation for people looking to pick up their first EDC knife.

We’ve featured Vosteed a lot before, and a big reason is the value and enjoyment of ownership you get with their blades. Many are affordable, come with unique designs not usually explored, and often both. And recently, they’ve shown they can flex in big ways when given the right chance and design(er).

Which brings me to the Raccoon. In many ways, it’s the distillation of super-popular knives that came before and the current state of rock-solid budget knives. You get a clean 3.25” drop point blade in 14C28N that folds into your choice of Micarta or G-10, and secures with either the fan-favorite button lock or, with its recent iterations, an ambidextrous crossbar one, which is a particularly nice sidegrade as a lefty myself. It’s available in a number of delightful colors that would make it an easy match for any EDC.

There are also some subtle but welcome details you don’t usually see at this price point, like a caged ceramic ball bearing pivot for a more fidgety deployment and little flourishes like a fancier pivot screw and flush ones for the reversible clip.

Last but most importantly, the Raccoon comes in at just 60 bucks. While that’s still a respectable price, especially for people starting out in EDC, in my opinion, it’s a fantastic value for everything you get, which adds up to a great everyday knife in both design and functionality. And since Vosteed has already shown its ability to really dial up the fit and finish on its knives, the Raccoon becomes a compelling platform for future exclusives and upgrades, like the upcoming ones from White Mountain Knives.

Happy National Knife Day, and on behalf of everyone on the EDC team, I hope you take the day to enjoy the knives you already have and continue the pursuit of the ones you still dream about. Carry on!

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

CIVIVI has been hitting it out of the ballpark lately with an impressive offering of affordable knives that don’t compromise on materials or construction. This continues with the CIVIVI Mini Elementum fixed blade, a smaller version of the immensely popular Elementum folder that still packs a punch with its impressive craftsmanship and materials.

The first detail that immediately jumps out to me is its eye-catching drop-point Damascus blade with a hollow grind. The distinctive patterns on the blade’s surface aren’t just beautiful to look at–it’s also indicative of the blade’s strength and sharpness from being forged from multiple layers of metal. The blade measures 2.24”, a good size to keep carrying options discrete. Its full tang construction means that the blade extends all the way through the handle. This makes the knife more solid, stable, and resistant to breaking or bending. The full tang also adds some weight and balance to the knife, making it feel more substantial and satisfying in your hand.

The Mini Elementum’s handle is made of green canvas Micarta, a material composed of layers of fabric and resin. Micarta is an excellent choice for knife handles because of its lightweight and durable characteristics, combined with good resistance to moisture and heat. The segmented Micarta scales feature a textured and ergonomic grip, making the knife comfortable and secure to hold.

The knife comes with a black Kydex sheath and a black bead chain. Kydex is known for being tough, waterproof, and easy to clean, perfect characteristics for a knife sheath. It also has excellent retention, holding the knife firmly in place without scratching or damaging it. The black bead chain can be used to wear the knife around your neck as a necklace, allowing you to always have it close at hand and hidden under your clothing.

CIVIVI’s use of premium materials and high-quality construction on the Mini Elementum is impressive on its own, but what really blows my mind is its retail price of $79, which usually goes as low as $67.15. That’s incredible value for a versatile, durable, and good-looking knife that will serve you well for years to come.

What we like: CIVIVI continues to deliver high-quality knives at near-unbeatable prices.

What to watch out for: While the Micarta handle is grippy and ergonomic, it’s pretty thin, with a width of just 0.20”. This might make the knife tricky to handle for those with larger hands.

Final verdict: The original CIVIVI Elementum has been one of the most popular EDC knives over the last few years, and this fixed-blade version makes it even more usable and reliable for everyday tasks.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

In 2010, Victorinox released their first Swiss Army Knife with a Damascus Steel blade, a Limited Edition Pioneer of 2010 pieces. Since then, Victorinox has released a yearly limited edition with the same eye-catching steel. This year’s addition to the series is the Ranger 55 Mic Damast Limited Edition 2023, limited to only 7000 pieces worldwide.

We’ve come a long way since 2010, and the Ranger 55 Mic Damast Limited Edition 2023 showcases advancements in metallurgy and craftsmanship with a blade made from Damasteel and scales made from Micarta, which is a thermoset plastic that can withstand extremes in heat and cold, resists moisture, and does not become brittle with age. Damasteel takes the traditional forging process of Damascus steel to the next level by using powder metallurgical steel manufacturing. This modern method improves and refines the traditional process, producing steel with fewer impurities and inclusions than standard Damascus steel. As a result, Damasteel has high corrosion resistance, strength, and excellent edge retention. The blade is produced in 320 layers and has a Dense Twist pattern that reveals the intricate layers of the steel, giving it a distinctive look.

The Damast Limited Edition 2023 is based on the original Ranger 55, which won the Red Dot Design award for its sleek and ergonomic design. It features 10 functions that cover a wide range of tasks, including a wood saw, corkscrew, can opener with a 3mm screwdriver, bottle opener with a lockable 5mm screwdriver and wire stripper, reamer, punch and sewing awl, and, of course, the key ring that allows you to attach the knife to your keychain or bag.

What we like: It’s everyone’s favorite multi-tool enhanced with Damasteel and durable, comfortable Micarta scales, with the added collectibility of being a limited edition release.

What to watch out for: Sequentially numbered with only 7000 units available worldwide, expect these to be snatched up quickly, so act fast to get your hands on one.

Final verdict: The venerable Swiss Army Knife is a multi-tool legend, and the Ranger 55 Mic Damast Limited Edition 2023 combines its functionality with beautiful design and exclusivity.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

While we tend to feature compact knives for everyday carry and highlight how a smaller blade size can still accomplish a great deal, sometimes having a longer blade is exactly what you need for EDC. Look at the new Vosteed Labrador folding knife, for example, with its sizable 3.74″ drop point blade and a long organic cutting edge, making it an excellent slicing and piercing tool. While a smaller knife could do similar work, the longer edge makes for a more effortless cut, especially when tackling more significant tasks. And the Vosteed Labrador, with its comfortable ergonomics, is well-suited to be your big knife for EDC.

A large folding knife gives you two advantages over a smaller option: a large blade that can handle more significant tasks and a more extended handle that lets you fully grip the knife. On the Labrador, the larger blade features a special 154CM stainless steel that’s been heat treated to 60 Rockwell units, making it harder and potentially sharper than run-of-the-mill blade steel without garnering the expensive price tags of knives that use premium steel to accomplish a similar goal. The canvas Micarta handle scales and ergonomically-shaped grip make it a joy to hold this knife after you’ve deployed the blade via the flipper opening mechanism or manual thumbstud. And underneath the handle scales is a secure liner lock that holds the blade in place during use.

And unlike many larger knives focusing on a tactical or outdoor survival design note, the Vosteed Labrador features their signature urban-friendly EDC design. Whether using this as your daily driver pocket knife during regular errands or taking this knife to the great outdoors, the Labrador is a great everyday carry option when you need a larger blade.

What we like: The larger drop-point blade helps you accomplish tasks requiring a blade more significant than most. The superior ergonomics of the Vosteed Labrador also make it easy to accomplish those tasks without having to fight the tool while doing it.

What to watch out for: While the heat treatment on the 154CM stainless steel is higher than most budget blade steel knives, it’s undeniable that it’s older blade steel that doesn’t have the same advantages you would get if you shelled out more money for a premium blade. But if you sharpen and maintain this knife, you will get good value for money.

Final verdict: The large size of the Vosteed Labrador might not be for everyone, but it’s a great option if you’re in the market for an accessible everyday carry blade that gets you hefty cutting power without a matching price tag.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Outdoor activities like camping and hiking place unique demands on your everyday carry, and you must be ready. You can get away with using urban EDC gear you would bring around when you’re near home, but it would help to have more sturdy and durable tools for extended hikes and hunting trips. That also applies to the knives you bring, especially if you plan to cook in the field. That’s where a dedicated outdoor fixed-blade cleaver knife like the Vosteed Minibarbar comes into play.

The Vosteed Minibarbar is a one-knife option that works as a camp and bushcraft knife and a cleaver knife when you’re in the great outdoors. Its full-tang cleaver design makes it great for rough chopping, whether taking down branches, prepping veggies, or breaking down game meats. The 7Cr17MoV base stainless steel provides a good platform for keeping and maintaining a sharp edge. You have a choice of four designs: a stonewashed black blade with black Micarta scales, satin with white G-10, satin with green Micarta, and the most eye-catching model with a Damascus pattern and gray G-10 scales.

You might ask what sets this particular knife apart from a kitchen cleaver you might already have in your knife block at home. The Minibarbar features either grippy G-10 or Micarta handle scales in a custom “frag” pattern on the tang. These provide way more grip than a standard kitchen knife and will do the job in inclement weather conditions where a kitchen knife would not. An integrated bottle opener at the knife’s pommel also makes it handy for pairing a cold one with the meal you’ve prepared.

What we like: The Vosteed Minibarbar provides a durable 6″ fixed-blade cleaver for outdoor excursions at a very approachable price. It’s a solid option for an all-in-one bushcraft knife and outdoor kitchen needs.

What to watch out for: Standard crowdfunding disclaimer here, so just be aware of how pledging on Kickstarter works. The Minibarbar is also slated to start shipping its first batch in June.

Final verdict: If you’re willing to take a shot, the Vosteed Minibarbar presents an exciting option for camp and outdoor kitchen knife enthusiasts. It can also work as a statement piece in your home kitchen if you go hiking, hunting, or camping infrequently.

Sometimes all it takes is one look at a knife’s design and its credentials to determine it will be an instant classic. After a string of incredibly popular debut knives, Tactile Knife Co. shake the market up again with their Maverick premium folding everyday carry knife. With the Maverick, you get a beautiful knife made in collaboration with custom knifemaker Richard Rogers. You get a premium and sizeable MagnaCut steel blade in a versatile shape. You get a secure ambidextrous crossbar lock. And like their pens and other knives and collaborations, you even get to choose between a minimalist titanium handle scale or a more grippy Micarta treatment based on what you have in mind for EDC.

The star of the show, of course, is the Maverick‘s blade steel. MagnaCut is a next-generation stainless steel that functionally replaces S30V and other ubiquitous Crucible steels on the EDC market today. And Tactile Knife Co. has heat treated the 3.6″ MagnaCut blade on the Maverick to an extremely impressive 63-64 Rockwell hardness. The Maverick is a folding knife with a keen maximum sharpness that will hold an edge far longer than most steels. The only downside is it will take some elbow grease to sharpen this knife when you eventually manage to dull it, but the extra effort is well worth it.

Tactile Knife Co. manufactures all of its cutlery here in the United States at its Texas machine shop. The quality and attention to detail are immediately apparent, especially in minor details like the shape of the pivot cover and the thumbstud, to say the least of Tactile’s overall design language, like in the handle grooves. The Maverick ticks all the boxes for an incredibly performant EDC knife and will be a pleasure for you to use and pocket for years to come, and like most of Tactile’s products, of an heirloom heritage that can stand the test of trends and time. When you think of a fixed-blade knife, chances are you have something too big for EDC in your mind. But when you look at a knife like the new Tactile Knife Co. Dreadeye, you get a knife designed from the ground up for minimal everyday carry. Our friends at Tactile Knife co-developed this knife in-house in collaboration with custom knife maker Matthew Christensen, and that unique Tactile design language makes its mark on this blade. The Dreadeye features a sleek form factor and super premium stainless steel for excellent cutting performance at its core. And with a 2.75″ long blade, it’s the perfect size for everyday carry, whether you’re heading out to the great outdoors or on daily errands.

The Dreadeye is Tactile’s first foray into the world of everyday carry fixed blades, and what an initial entry this is. Its sub-3” blade features a unique edge profile that crosses a traditional drop-point and a tanto design. The unique design of this knife makes it well-suited to take on both slicing and piercing tasks, with its well-defined pointed tip and sharp angled belly. Its cutting potential is also at its peak with the knife’s use of CPM MagnaCut stainless steel. MagnaCut is a next-generation stainless supersteel that functionally replaces S30V and other ubiquitous Crucible steels on the EDC market today.

Each Dreadeye is machined and assembled in the United States by Tactile Knife Co. in Texas, and the quality blade mates with comfortable Richlite Micarta canvas scales. Being a fixed-blade knife, the best way to EDC it on your person is with a belt holster, and you get to pick between a sturdy Kydex sheath or a more traditional heritage leather sheath designed by Chatanooga Leatherworks. Either option is compatible with either left or right-handed carry, but only the Kydex sheath is compatible with MOLLE/PALS webbing for tactical applications on nylon gear.

The Tactile Knife Co. Dreadeye is a truly modern and unique EDC fixed-blade knife suited for various daily tasks. With Tactile’s strong pedigree and the exceptional design of this knife, you can expect the Dreadeye to be hard to find after its initial run. Jesper Voxnaes is a knife industry titan, with plenty of sought-after collaborations under his belt and many more on the horizon. His most recent folding knife, the Copita, is made in conjunction with our friends at Urban EDC Supply. It’s based on a folding kitchen knife, with a distinct modified drop-point blade and an extended curved belly that makes it excellent for slicing tasks, especially if you use your everyday carry blade to do a bit of ad-hoc food prep when you’re on the go.

The Urban EDC Supply Copita is an elegant compact folding knife with a 2.26″ blade featuring premium Bohler M390 stainless steel. The blade comes in an ergonomic design with a choil that allows you to get a tight grip on the blade during detail cutting and slicing tasks. Its front flipper action is smooth with a nice detent, and it allows for easy ambidextrous one-handed opening for added convenience.

The handle is available in a few different makeups, from a sleek minimalist titanium body to a brown (or green) canvas micarta for added grip, and even an elegant all black PVD colorway that comes with a blacked-out blade for maximum discretion. The different colorways alternate between titanium, brass, and anodized blue backspacers for an aesthetic touch of contrast. At its lightest configuration with canvas micarta the Copita weights in at 2.2 oz, ensuring this knife won’t weigh you down too much before you even get to use it for your daily needs.

With the weirdness that has marked the last year and a half, Urban EDC is releasing this knife on a pre-order basis, which allows them to get the supply chain right to fulfill all their orders by what they anticipate to be Spring 2022. If this striking collaboration design speaks to you, preorder and secure the Copita of your choice before the deadline as supplies will be limited, so make sure to check it out at the link below.

Want to learn more about the Copita? We asked Jesper Voxnaes himself a few questions about the knife:

What is the inspiration behind this Knife?
I was sitting in the Tequilaria in Sausalito and noticed a small knife used by the bartender to cut limes etc. The blade shape was catching my eye and I quickly combined some of that with the lines of the small tulip shaped glass in my hand…boom first lines of the Copita.

Are there any design elements you decided to leave out and why?
No, I actually got to do this one as I wanted. However at first it was meant to be a liner-lock but double steel liners added thickness on the Micarta versions so I redesigned it for frame lock. I like it better now and it’s slimmer in hand and pocket.

How did you come up with the name Copita?
The Tequilaria is named Copita so that was easy…

The CEO from CRKT remains one of the community’s favorite choices for modern gents pocket knife carry today. It has a understated elegance with a slim and sleek design that belies its highly capable blade. And while CRKT has already leveled up the CEO previously with an upgrade to D2 tool steel, they’re outdone themselves with a collaboration with Blade HQ by releasing a premium version of this EDC folding knife featuring high-quality CPM-S35VN stainless steel.

Now outfitted with S35VN, the 3.1″ flat-ground blade on this version of the knife enjoys excellent edge retention. The versatility of the slightly-upswept blade means you’re going to need that added level of performance as you begin to use this daily driver of a knife to accomplish more of your tasks.

The other unique thing about this edition of the blade is the addition of lightweight blue canvas micarta handle scales. The unique color scheme denotes this knife’s special status as a Blade HQ exclusive, and the use of the material helps keep the knife light in your pockets as it weighs just 1.97 ounces. But whether you show off that bright blue handle is up to you: the S35VN CEO retains its right-handed tip-down deep carry pocket clip for low-profile, discreet carry all day.

If you’ve been on the fence so far about getting yourself a CRKT CEO, you should spring for this premium S35VN version of the knife. It’s a fitting addition to an already great and ergonomic everyday carry knife and it should be near the top of your list for knife pickups this year. Check it out today on Blade HQ and buy one for yourself before it sells out.

The Micarta Tactical Pen is today’s feature for Writing Wednesday, and comes as a solid offering from Boker Plus, best known for their hundreds of models of knives and tools. This pen is constructed from micarta,a durable composite made from resin and cloth that results in an intriguing pattern across the pen’s body. The hardware is crafted from aluminum, and then coated with a black titanium treatment for both better wear and a sleek black appearance. The back of the pen has a bolt-action mechanism to extend and retract the EDC favorite Fisher Space Pen refill, and a super sturdy pocket clip to take care of carry duties. Check out this unique take on the tactical pen at the link below.
