It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

A reliable and versatile outdoor knife can spell the difference between an enjoyable outdoor adventure and one you’d rather forget. The Gerber Terracraft is one such knife. Designed to handle any bushcraft challenge from fire starting to shelter building, this full tang fixed blade knife features an extra-thick 4.4” S30V steel blade that’s durable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to sharpen. Its drop point shape is as versatile as it gets for camping and bushcrafting, and its flat spine with a 90-degree edge can be effective for striking fire steel or scraping tinder.

Pulling it out of its American-made sheath, you’ll notice that this limited edition Terracraft’s handle is made of Micarta, a material known for its toughness, stability, and moisture resistance. It comes as a welcome alternative to the original Terracraft’s G-10 scales. The handle’s textured surface enhances grip and prevents slippage, while its contoured shape allows it to fit comfortably in the hand without hotspots even when using multiple grip styles. Micarta also feels more natural to the touch than G-10 and develops a patina unique to the user over time. To top (or end) things off, the handle’s pommel is hammer-ready and can be used to pound nails or stakes.

The Terracraft is part of the Gerber Reserve series, knives built in small batches in the USA to showcase Gerber’s craftsmanship and a more focused attention to detail for each knife they make. It was built from the ground up to best handle wet weather and demonstrate its usability in slippery conditions, making it the ideal choice for an outdoor knife when the environment becomes unpredictable.

What we like: While Gerber’s Terracraft line has always proven to be wilderness-ready, the Micarta handles make all the difference, especially in the wet.

What to watch out for: Gerber has multiple versions of their Terracraft, but this variant with Micarta handles is limited and exclusive to their website.

Final verdict: What more could you ask for from an outdoor knife? The Gerber Terracraft Micarta has the right combination of materials and solid build quality to provide years of service no matter where your adventures take you.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The beauty of a multi-tool for everyday carry is being able to have the ability to tackle complicated tasks without having to lug around a bulk set of dedicated tools around with you. But it’s essential to carry the right multi-tool. An excellent multi-tool has the necessary functions, reliability, and capability to perform up to your standards. Gerber makes exceptional contenders for EDC, and they’re back in black for those looking for a stealthier setup. The Dual-Force is the tool of choice for anyone who needs a great pair of pliers in their EDC, and the Center-Drive Rescue is the best choice for anyone who works in EMS or wants to prepare for emergencies.

The Gerber Dual-Force is a pliers-style multi-tool that focuses on delivering the best plier jaws you can have in a compact EDC package. Its standout feature is a pair of foldable two-position slip joint pliers with extra-large teeth and a blunt construction jaw that grips tightly to fasteners. And unlike the standard pair of slip-joint pliers you might have in your tool chest at home or in your truck, this one comes with an outboard 3.25″ plain edge knife, a saw, and a center-drive bit-holding screwdriver all in one convenient and easy-to-carry tool.

Next is the Center-Drive Rescue, a revamped version of Gerber’s Center-Drive featuring different tools geared towards first responders and emergency use. For example, it has an outbound strap cutter that’s deployable with a single hand. The Rescue’s sheath is compatible with MOLLE and Berry gear mounting systems, integrating well with an already-established EDC loadout. Of course, the namesake bit-holding screwdriver remains, designed to make it easier to use and get into tricky spots while still being fully compatible with standard bits, including the 13 it comes with. Last but not least are the pliers, which are deployed with a push system that helps prevent accidental openings like you would in a standard butterfly-style tool.

What we like: Two of Gerber’s most popular and useful multi-tools in blackout colorways.

What to watch out for: The Dual-Force forgoes the needle-nose linesman pliers design of other multi-tools and instead adopts a more traditional slip-joint plier head. The Center-Drive Rescue‘s strap cutter will excel at cutting through thin webbing and nylon seatbelts, not thick rope.

Final verdict: Gerber’s Dual-Force and Center-Drive Rescue are great options for EDCing a multi-tool. Gerber stands by the design and craftsmanship of their tools with a lifetime warranty, and countless EDCers rely on their tools daily.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

One of the latest trends in EDC knives is the push toward using better materials and design practices to achieve more lightweight knives. Take the new Gerber Assert, a sub-2oz folding knife made of premium materials that lets you easily cut and slice without all the bulk of older knives. Knives like the Gerber Assert break away from the mold of feeling like knives need heft and weight to get big jobs done. Instead, you can opt for a compact and lightweight knife like the Gerber Assert to do everything you need without weighing you down needlessly.

Gerber’s critical design decisions make the Assert a great lightweight folding knife for everyday carry. The first is using an ambidextrous pivot lock, eliminating the need for a big, heavy liner or frame lock to hold the 2.98” S30V stainless steel blade in place. That locking system, along with the adjustable thumbstud and hollowed-out eyehole cut into the blade, make operating the Gerber Assert an easy one-handed operation. Another notch in favor of the Gerber Assert is the use of a textured glass-filled nylon handle that features a honeycomb interior that decreases the overall weight of the knife while also adding structural integrity to the handle at the same time.

With its 1.87oz total weight, the Assert reaches barely-there status in your pockets. And the reversible deep carry pocket clip that comes with the knife ensures that it can remain discreet in your pockets until you need to retrieve it to cut, slice, and pierce your way through your everyday tasks.

What we like: Along with its lightweight and ergonomic design, the Gerber Assert is made here in the United States, with great attention to detail. Because it is made close to home, the Assert is also easily customizable directly from Gerber’s factory. With Gerber Custom, you can choose between the colorways, designs, and materials that suit your own everyday carry needs. And Gerber stands by the craftsmanship of the Gerber Assert and all their other EDC knives with a limited lifetime warranty.

What to watch out for: The Assert‘s premium materials and design language command a premium price, but the added cost and option for personalization is worth it.

Final verdict: The Gerber Assert focuses on being the best knife for any user, and from the adjustable thumb studs to the factory customization options, this USA-made knife is a capable and customizable choice for your everyday carry.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Founded in 1939, Gerber has a long history of producing high-quality knives and multi-tools used by soldiers, hunters, and tradesmen alike. The limited-edition Fastball Heritage knife is a celebration of its 84-year history, honoring its roots with a new Gerber orange handle color, iconic sword and stone logo, and laser marks created from the original Gerber packaging.

The Fastball’s design features an intuitive finger flipper opening mechanism utilizing B.O.S.S Technology (Balls of Stainless Steel), a ball-bearing system to reduce friction for smooth deployment. Its 3” S30V wharncliffe blade makes the knife suitable for rough carving and cutting tasks. The blade can also handle precise cuts with its fine point, making pulling cuts particularly easy. The knife is 7.1” long while maintaining a light weight of just 2.7 oz, thanks to its aircraft-grade aluminum handle. And as a testament to their commitment to quality and service, Gerber offers a limited lifetime warranty on all their products.

What we like: It’s a highly versatile knife that you can use for nearly any situation, from cutting rope to peeling fruits. It’s also a great representation of the brand and its commitment to building more premium American-made products.

What to watch out for: Gerber is releasing just a small quantity of these knives, so it’s best to act fast if you want one for yourself.

Final verdict: Intuitive to use and safe to deploy, the Gerber Fastball was already an easy recommendation to any EDC pack. This Fastball Heritage knife just adds a dash of exclusivity to the mix.

When it comes to picking out an everyday carry knife of your own, it can be all too easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you have to spend a lot of money to get a quality product. While you can certainly get a great knife design featuring premium materials at higher price points, it’s simply incorrect to dismiss all knives that don’t cost a pretty penny as somehow not deserving of your attention. It’s entirely possible to get a quality affordable EDC blade with all the features and performance you need without having to break your budget. Better yet, because these knives don’t cost an arm and a leg, it’s less likely you’ll fall into the other trap when it comes to EDC knives: being too afraid to actually use your blade.

Whether you’re just starting out in the world of EDC and you’re looking for the best cheap knife, or you’re a seasoned vet looking for a beater backup knife or just something new, there’s plenty of options out there in 2021. To help you along in your search, we’ve put together this guide which rounds up some of the best budget knives that you can have in your pocket right around $50 today.

Its 3.11″ 8Cr13MoV blade is easy to maintain, and the GRN scales offer a decent grip despite the slim nature of the handle itself. If you’re willing to spring for a more upscale version of this knife, there’s versions of this knife featuring a more hardy D2 tool steel as well as a premium S35VN stainless steel that meets the needs of some of the most discerning users in the EDC community.

This sets this knife apart from most budget knives in this category that use 8Cr13MoV stainleess steel or D2 tool steel, and that combined with its 2.375″ wharncliffe blade shape and front-flipper design with inset liner lock make this compact knife a great choice for EDC on a budget.

When you make multi-tools for tradespeople and military personnel alike, they’re going to get the job done. But for the rest of us, that might be a bit overkill for everyday tasks and projects. That’s why Gerber created the Suspension-NXT—a more compact, EDC-friendly butterfly-style multi-tool based on the original trade-oriented Suspension. And while the new Suspension-NXT weighs less and takes up less space in the pocket, it’s packed with more features than ever and still fits your budget.

Functionality-wise it retains its externally accessible locking tools for ease of access and safety during hard use. The NXT actually ups the total tool count to 15 from the original’s 13, thanks to the addition of a new set of tools catering to EDC, including a wire stripper, medium flathead screwdriver, awl, file, and ruler. The NXT’s main needlenose pliers are spring-loaded for comfortable, controlled performance even during longer tasks too.

With its well-rounded toolset, EDC-focused design, and affordable price, the Gerber Suspension-NXT could be the next multi-tool you’ve been looking for. Check it out at the link below.

One of the most recommended and most carried pocket tools on our site is the Gerber Shard. Its small size and lack of blades makes it perfect for airline travel but gives you plenty of the functionality of a larger multi-tool. A wire stripper, flathead driver, and bottle opener are crammed into this small tool that can easily fit in your pocket. You can also wrap the handle in your favorite color paracord to add style and a little extra practicality. And with an easily accessible price point, it’s an affordable and useful addition to any EDC.

If you’re looking for a low-profile knife that can still pack a punch, the Gerber Applegate-FairBarn Covert knife might just be what you need. Based on the classic  Applegate-Fairbairn knife design from the 1940s, this folding option by Gerber makes sure you remain stealthy without sacrificing utility.  A 3.75” blade made of 154CM steel ensures you have enough edge for slicing and cutting, despite the knife’s spear-point shape.

Heading south from its sharp tip, you’ll find a partially serrated section to boost its utility, making cutting rope and other rough materials much more manageable. The black FRN handles are enhanced with vertical grooves to improve your grip, even in non-ideal conditions. The blade opens up via a thumb slot and stays securely in place thanks to a liner lock. Finally, a deep-carry pocket clip ensures this covert blade disappears inside your pockets, despite its larger size.

If you have ever used the screwdriver on a multi-tool, you know how awkward it can be to use for an extended time. The screwdriver’s placement in most multi-tools tends to be off-center, an additional function and not the focus, making it uncomfortable to manipulate and less than ideal to use compared to a dedicated tool.

But things become better when a tool is designed to bring that driver to the center, like with the aptly-named Gerber Center Drive. This unique distinction has given the Center Drive a leg–or rather, an arm–up on the competition’s standard bit drivers. And now, for this upcoming holiday gifting season, you can fully customize a Center Drive for yourself, friends, or family to give it the look to match its performance and the rest of your EDC.

With the Custom Center Drive, you can pick between nine unique color options and many laser engravings that let you create a truly personalized tool. Even better, you can select between four different tool packs that change the included functions built into it. That ability to choose makes this the only multi-tool on the market that lets you swap out its feature set before it leaves its home factory of Portland, Oregon.

This customization also makes the Center Drive a great candidate for everyday carry gifting. Of course, the star of the show is the namesake Center Drive screwdriver bit holder. It’s extra long at 3.2” and magnetic for added convenience. Its placement at the center axis makes it easy to turn the tool and use it daily, with the torque and rotation you would expect from a regular full-size screwdriver but with a more compact footprint, not to mention the addition of all the extra functions.

Being a plier-style multi-tool, it has needle-nose plier tips and a wire cutter built in. And the full-sized outboard knife (one of the canvases for your custom design) lets you pare down to the essentials and carry just one tool rather than two. All the tools require just one hand to operate, and the pliers are spring-loaded to help you avoid fatigue during prolonged use.

The Gerber Custom Center Drive allows you to build a unique multi-tool for gifting to yourself or others this holiday season. It’s more than just changing the color or adding a bit of flair to your knife: you can pick the best features for your daily tasks. Make sure to click the link below to find out more about the Gerber Custom Center Drive, and buy one today for shipping in time for the holiday rush.

The best tool isn’t the one that costs the most; it’s the one that gets used when you need it. Gerber is no stranger to making practical tools that have become staples in many EDC kits. One of its newest offerings is the Slimsada knife. This one is worth checking out if you’re looking for a no-nonsense, everyday knife.

The Gerber Slimsada is a workhorse of a knife with a 3.5-inch blade made of D2 steel that will hold its edge and is also corrosion-resistant. The blade has an elongated thumbhole, making opening it with one hand a piece of cake. It’s versatile enough for almost anything the day can throw your way, thanks to a drop-point blade which is a great style for everyday cutting. Gerber has also perfected its ball-bearing system, which means you’ll get a smooth, consistent deployment every time you use it.

How a knife sits in hand is as essential as its blade. The Slimsada features linen micarta scales on the show side opposite its frame lock so you can get a good grip even in harsh conditions. The comfortably shaped handle combined with a weight of only around 2.7 ounces makes a strong case for why the Slimsada could make a great everyday carry knife. When closed, it’s slightly over 4.5-inches as well. So whether you’re looking to toss it in your backpack or carry it in your pocket, it shouldn’t weigh you down. If you decide to EDC it, the Slimsada has a sturdy pocket clip to keep it in place even when you’re busy moving around.

For the price, it’s hard to argue that the Gerber Slimsada isn’t a good deal. You’ll get a tough knife that’s perfect for daily use, whether you’re going camping or opening boxes at the office. It also comes with the Gerber lifetime guarantee, so should anything go wrong Gerber has your back and will stand behind its product.

If you’re struggling to find the best gift for your dad this Father’s Day, our friends at Gerber have you covered. For decades, Gerber has made quality everyday carry tools, and their newest and most innovative EDC tools have your dad and his needs in mind this year.

Gerber Dual-Force

The butterfly opening Dual-Force takes its inspiration and aesthetic from the Center-Drive that came before it, while introducing a new plier design not yet seen in modern multi-tools. This is where it gets its name—the pliers operate with a 2-position slip-lock design and larger teeth for better leverage, giving it twice the jaw strength and grip force and even better control. Pair this with a layered jaw construction, and the Dual-Force is a serious contender for an actual dedicated pair of pliers. Your dad might have his trusty pair of dedicated pliers somewhere in his garage, but now he can make it a part of his EDC.

Gerber DoubleDown

For the dad who loves the great outdoors, the Gerber DoubleDown is a great gift. One look at the foldable machete clues you on its design heritage as a butterfly knife. The mechanism allows Gerber to make a sizeable outdoors knife take up less space than a traditional folding knife had it employed a more standard full-tang design. Safety is at the heart of the knife’s design, with a unique quad lock system that requires all four locks to be engaged for its twin handles to move. There’s even a built-in safety detent that stops the blade as you close it, giving you time to get your fingers out of the way of the edge as it moves. The DoubleDown can transition between being a knife, a machete, and a hatchet all in one tool, eliminating the need to pack all three when your dad heads out on the trail.

Gerber Custom Fastball

The Gerber Custom Fastball offers made-in-the-USA EDC quality for a premium addition to dad’s collection. It’s a particularly great option for Father’s Day because you can customize it to make it uniquely dad’s own. The Fastball features a 3” S30V blade with a flipper opening for easy one-handed operation. Putting the knife to use is an effortless experience thanks to its smooth one-handed flipper deployment made easy with B.O.S.S. Tech ball bearings in the pivot and a precision detent that lets you “lightswitch” the blade open and closed at a whim. If you opt for a custom knife, you can choose between 14 different handle colors or even swap to carbon fiber or copper handles if the aluminum handles don’t suit dad’s preference. And there’s an extensive library of engravable illustrations to choose from for that finishing touch.

Gerber Lockdown Pry

If you’ve ever seen your dad try to use a knife blade as a pry tool, this is his gift. The Lockdown Pry sports a 3.87″ length while closed and a 2.5″ plain-edge main blade that locks into place with a secure frame lock. It features fix additional tools, including a chisel, file, scissors, and even a dedicated exchangeable #11 craft utility blade that lets you do precise cutting tasks without dulling the main blade for frequent use. As its name suggests, the Lockdown Pry features a pry bar built right into the multi-tool handle, giving dad convenient access to its primary functionality while letting him carry the compact package with ease.

Gerber Custom Savvy

Gerber’s new Savvy knife is as sleek as its name, with a slim profile packed with premium features. It’s designed as an ambidextrous, one-handed pocketknife with an extra-smooth deployment and part of Gerber’s made in the USA line built with care in small batches, making it a special gift for dad. The Savvy’s larger 3.5” blade comes in a premium 20CV blade steel, best known for its exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance, in a wharncliffe blade shape that allows precise cuts. A pivot lock with anti-rotation washers provides secure blade support and a frictionless deployment through a thumb stud. Its handles come in aluminum or carbon fiber scales, or you can go full custom materials, colors, and laser marks for dad using Gerber’s Custom shop. Last but not least, a textured pocket clip and lanyard hole let dad carry this classic knife with modern features according to his preference.

With Father’s Day around the corner, we continue to scour the market for the best gifts for dad, and being the EDCers we are, a knife is both an essential and a personal gift to give. It’s the tool that often gets passed down from father to son and is useful in many ways, so giving a great one back can be a thoughtful gesture. In this guide, we’ve worked with some of our favorite brands to make a list of sleek slicers that would make excellent gifts for his day. Whether he’s into traditional or tactical, there’s a knife for him below.

Deejo Custom Knives

Deejo is a French cutlery brand that creates ultra-lightweight knives that you can customize on their website, providing a plethora of options and personalized details to make a knife truly one-of-a-kind for dad. They’ve launched even more new and original tattoo designs in 2022 to add to the choices you can have etched onto the blade of any of their svelte and featherweight models, so it’s the best time ever to treat him to a custom new knife.

Customizing his knife is easy on the MyDeejo site. You are greeted by a simple and responsive tool that visually reflects all your current design choices from the number of options available, including preferences for the size of the knife, blade finish, handle scales, and blade etching, all in a state of the art 3D interface. You also have the opportunity to engrave dad’s name or a memorable quote to make the knife even more unique and personal. Finish off the knife with your choice of handle material and Deejo will build and ship out dad’s unique gift in two business days.

The Savvy’s larger 3.5” blade comes in a premium 20CV blade steel, best known for its exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance, in an uncommon but versatile wharncliffe blade shape that allows precise cuts. A pivot lock with anti-rotation washers provides secure blade support and a frictionless deployment through a thumb stud. SOG Terminus XR Damascus

The Terminus XR is one of SOG’s best everyday knives, and a new Damascus pattern for its blade is just the thing to add some flair to dad’s EDC. There’s plenty for dad to like on the Terminus XR, including a versatile 2.95” blade in a subtle clip point shape. He can deploy the blade in three ways: via the ambidextrous thumb studs, kicking out the blade via an exposed tab, and flicking the knife open by disengaging the super-strong and ambidextrous XR lock.

And when he’s done for the day, the Terminus’s blade folds into its G10 and carbon fiber handles, where a reversible clip also makes it easy for him to deep pocket carry the knife. As a special offer to EDC readers, you can get 25% off the Terminus XR Damascus with code EDCDAD22 through June 19th.

Kershaw Cargo

As its name suggests, the Kershaw Cargo is a knife built to carry and use for the long haul. Its simplicity is efficient, and extremely lightweight at 2.3 oz. Plus, with a 3.25” blade with an extended belly in hardworking D2 tool steel for all dad’s slicing needs. The knife is fully ambidextrous from its dual thumb studs for manual opening to its reversible clip and especially its mid-lock on the back of the handles. The handles themselves are glass-filled nylon reinforced with steel liners to handle dad’s heaviest tasks, with unique handle contouring, texturing, and chamfered edges for comfort even during hard use.

Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener

Every knife on this list eventually needs maintenance, as a well-maintained and sharp knife is a safe one. Give dad the best and easiest system with Work Sharp’s Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener. It can sharpen everything from a fine scalpel up to a lawnmower blade. Designed in collaboration with renowned knifemaker Ken Onion, this mechanical sharpener uses flexible abrasive belts and an angled holder that lets you select between 15 and 30 degrees to match your blade.

Aside from the design’s ease of use and flexibility, the Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener is handy if dad has special grind needs on his knives. He can also use the system on knives with full or partial serrations without too much fuss, especially when adding the Blade Grinding Attachment for extra control and surface area. The standard Ken Onion Edition comes with five belts ranging from an ultra-coarse 120 grit for reprofiling and fixing broken blades to a 6000 grit belt that lets him apply a mirror polish on his edges.

The James Brand Carter

Dad deserves no less than the most advanced (and arguably most handsome) knife from The James Brand: the Carter. It’s chock-full of EDC-friendly features, starting with its ideal 2.8“ drop point blade made of a highly corrosion-resistant VG-10 stainless steel. It’s supported by The James Brand’s ambidextrous slide lock for simple and secure operation, with an enlarged thumb disk for easy opening. 3D-machined G10 scales give the knife excellent grip and ergonomics, while a reversible deep carry clip and lanyard insert let him choose his favorite way to carry the knife.

The Carter comes with more options than ever to dial in the perfect style and size for dad, including options for handle color and material (G-10 and Micarta), the option for a partially serrated blade, and even a larger XL profile that bumps up the blade size to 3.3 inches.

CIVIVI Brazen C2023C

For the dads looking for a more tactical addition to their toolkit, CIVIVI’s new Brazen makes a strong point to be their next knife. Front and center is the Brazen’s striking 3.46” tanto blade in D2 steel, blacked out and stonewashed for a wicked profile. Dad can deploy the blade via dual thumb studs or the Brazen’s flipper tab, with a liner lock securing it in place. Equally stealthy black G-10 makes up the handles, with a reversible pocket clip and a lanyard slot built into the backspacer for dad to carry to his preference.

From June 1st to June 20th, CIVIVI is offering up to 25% discount on select knives, including the  Brazen, and a special gift pack with a handkerchief, stickers, and a thank you note while supplies last.

Cold Steel Engage

Cold Steel’s new Engage brings exceptional materials and high-performance features to the table for the hardworking dad who needs an equally hard-working knife. The beefy knife comes with a sizable 3.5” blade in S35VN steel, a premium and well-rounded steel that’s as resilient as it is performant and easy to maintain.

Dad can deploy this clip point blade via ambidextrous thumb studs, secured during use by Cold Steel’s new slide-action Atlas lock. Pushing back on the lock at the top of the overbuilt G-10 handles lets the knife fold into a compact 4.69”, 6.6oz package. You can grab the Engage at a 25% discount with code EDCDAD22, valid from June 2nd to the 19th, giving you plenty of time to order it for Father’s Day.

For 2022, Gerber upgrades their Devour multi-tool with the titanium treatment, adding strength, rigidity, and hypoallergenic properties to the utensil compared to its original 7075 T6 aluminum construction. From outside appearances it looks like a regular camping spork, but it packs a multi-tool inserted into the handle that provides six different functions, including a can and bottle opener, a pry bar, a flathead screwdriver, and a scraping edge. It’s a pretty handy way to consolidate your carry whether you’re headed to the great outdoors or you’re looking for something better than a standard plastic take-away set when you’re opening up your lunch at work.

Specs

7.6“ length

1 ounce

Titanium

New multi-tool attachment

What we like: This is a well-designed tool that takes up little space in your pack while providing useful functions when you’re on the go on the trail or traveling to your next destination. The titanium treatment adds a premium feel to the tool, and it will appeal to anyone with an everyday carry set that revolves around having other titanium tools. The addition of an unobtrusive multi-tool that adds useful opening and consumption tools is a welcome addition as well as a step up from a basic spork.

What we don’t like: Usually when a knife or tool is given a titanium upgrade, it means that it ends up being lighter overall for EDC. The opposite is the case here. Fans of ultra-lightweight camping won’t appreciate the added heft as the original tool weighed less at 0.83 ounces. When you absolutely need the lightest option, this won’t be it. For everyone else, you’ll have to make the decision as to whether the added strength of the tool is worth the added weight to your everyday carry.

If you’re in the market for an EDC spork that can do more than help you dig into some grub away from home, the Devour Ti might be your best option. It’s certainly a step up from a disposable utensil, and it looks great too. Check it out in your choice of colorway to best fit your style and kit at the link below.

]]>
With Spring just a few weeks ahead, more and more EDC companies have been adding exciting new items to their catalogs, and Gerber is no exception. They’re setting the bar with new multi-tools with new designs and shapes, and to help you open up boxes, remove nails, or un-jam various items, Gerber is releasing the Chonk, a pocket-sized multi-tool designed around prying things open with a couple of extra features to increase its utility.

Specs

1“ width

3.9” length

2.4 ounces

Stainless steel + Micarta/aluminum construction

What we like: Not that many tools have a pry bar in them, and even if they do, they usually aren’t long enough to give you the leverage you need to do heavier duty work. The nice thing about the Chonk is that it has just the right amount of length to provide you with the purchase you need while remaining small enough to carry pretty much anywhere. Another thing we appreciate about the Chonk is it’s ergonomic design, which not only raises comfort while in use, but also reduces the chances of you hurting yourself when working something particularly stubborn. The addition of a laser etched pattern into its steel body and scales is also appreciated as an extra element of flair for EDC.

{embed=”post:40842″ list=”true”}

Learn more about this EDC

What we don’t like: Being a smaller tool with such a simple design, it’s hard to find anything to dislike about the Chonk by itself. However, when we compare it to similar Gerber tools like the Prybrid Utility, there aren’t that many reasons to choose it. They both have a pry tool as one of their main features, they have a similar size, a similar price point, and the Prybrid has more functions. With this in mind, the only situations where you’d choose the Chonk over the Prybrid is if you’re going to be prying things open very often and want to leverage the Chonk’s more ergonomic design, or when you want to carry a tool without a blade in it.

Overall, while the Chonk is quite similar to other Gerber multitools, it remains a welcome addition to their lineup as it gives EDCer even more options to choose from when building their carries. It still carries the same high-quality construction, design and performance, even if it might appeal to a more niche audience.

The Center-Drive‘s namesake feature is the large, curved arm on its bit driver. At 3.25” long, this locking arm positions the bit on the center axis of the tool and gives you more room to work with, which makes using it feel more like a dedicated screwdriver. And because you don’t need to fully open the tool to center the driver, you can get a more controlled grip on the tool in its wider, closed position. With traditional multi-tool designs, they can feel lopsided and difficult to turn or even uncomfortable to grip when partially unfolded. The Center-Drive also uses standard bits, letting you easily swap in or replace ones you might already have in your EDC.

The post Gerber in 2022: The Stake Out Multi-tool appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
As we head into Spring, we can look forward to better weather, more outdoor adventures, and fresh gear to bring along for the ride. To tackle your campground tasks, Gerber whipped up their new Stake Out multi-tool. True to its name, this pocket-sized multi-tool features a specialized hook for pulling out tent stakes when it’s time to pack up and head out. A well-selected set of tools round out its functionality, making it an ideal camping companion to complement your outdoor carry.

Specs

11 tools

Outdoor and camping ready

Built-in carabiner

4.5″ length

The Stake Out shows some familiar design language to its more general purpose EDC brother, the Armbar. It’s closer in design to a regular folder or Swiss Army knife than your pliers-based butterfly style multi-tools. But given its use case as a specialized tool for camping and outdoor adventures, this makes sense. Compared to other tools in the outdoor space, the Stake Out might offer “just enough” functionality without weighing you down. It’s clear that for some campers and backpackers, optimizing for weight is paramount. The Stake Out isn’t without its competition in this space, but existing options like the Leatherman Signal may be more than some EDCers need for basic camping tasks like setting up, prepping food, and packing out.

What we like: Design-wise, this boasts an overall well-thought out toolset to nail its camp-focused specialization. I appreciate the tweezers being on the larger side and the hi-vis orange retrieval endcap makes this completely removable tool less likely to get lost. The scissors are blunted at the ends to prevent accidental poking, while the large awl can cover that functionality more deliberately. The namesake stake puller is a unique addition that lets it stand out from its peers, as few other tools offer a hook for this purpose and in this size (the Victorinox hooks are smaller overall). Even if you don’t use it for pulling out stakes, it can help lug around heavy grocery bags or something similar. Lastly, the carabiner clip is a sensible carry method for easy access in an outdoor adventure scenario. Lastly, the blade does lock up into the frame, which is a welcome feature.

What we don’t like: It’s always tricky to not only pack in a bunch of functions into a tool, but also make sure they’re implemented in a usable and practical way. One thing that stands out is the placement of the file on the outer edge of the tool. It seems too close to the other deployable tools and depending on the angle you’re filing, they may get in your way. Another minor complaint is the blade steel is probably not going to come close to any dedicated EDC folding knife, so it’s not likely to fully replace both your multi-tool and pocket knife if you’re trying to keep things super light on the trail. Finally, not all of the tools lock, which may be disappointing to some. But given the tool’s smaller size and the scope of tasks it’s meant to do, fully locking tools for every function might be a case of overengineering to the point of inconvenience anyway.

Overall, it seems to be another welcome option for those looking to build out a camping EDC without needing to commit to the bulk of several disparate dedicated tools. For the size, price, and functionality it promises, it seems like an easy decision.

Gerber has been such a staple in the EDC community that it’s hard to remember a point when one of their tools was making waves as a popular carry choice. Between the iconic Shard and Dime and newer staples like the Prybrid and custom made in the USA knives, they’ve been covering your tool bases for years. 2022 ushers in a new generation of useful gear from Gerber, and starting things off is a heavy hitter multi-tool called the Dual-Force.

Specs

12 tools

Unique new plier design

Center-Axis bit driver

4.65“ length

What we like: The butterfly opening Dual-Force takes its inspiration and aesthetic from the Center-Drive that came before it, while introducing a new plier design not yet seen in modern multi-tools. This is where it gets its name—the pliers operate with a 2-position slip-lock design and larger teeth for better leverage (Gerber says it’s twice the jaw strength and twice the grip force) and even better control. Pair this with a layered jaw construction and the Dual-Force is a serious contender for an actual dedicated pair of pliers, which is a common weakness for multi-tool pliers and may have contributed to the rise of EDC-friendly dedicated tools like the KNIPEX Cobra pliers.

But a new and powerful set of teeth isn’t the only thing the Dual-Force brings to the table. It comes with 12 tools including a full-sized 3.25“ knife and the Center-Axis bit driver (itself operating like a dedicated screwdriver) from its predecessor as well, covering most of your tool bases in a 12-ounce package. And when you’re done for the day, an included fabric sheath carries and protects the multi-tool until it’s ready for its next day of work.

What we don’t like: It’s actually hard to find anything to dislike about the Dual-Force. The Center-Drive that came before it was a sleeper hit of a multi-tool, and its DNA is alive and well in its successor while bringing even more unique features to the table. For a while now the multi-tool market has been playing catch up to smaller and more affordable tools that have become new EDC staples, and the Dual-Force’s ability to perform on par with dedicated tools helps close the gap. The price is in a nice sweet spot too at exactly $100, putting it well below its competition. We’ll likely have more to say when we get the Dual-Force in hand, but at the moment, the only drawback is the fact that it isn’t available yet.
