Pocket knives are one of the most popular everyday carry items. You’ll find them in the pockets of people who don’t even know what everyday carry is. But one of the best parts of everyday carry is the opportunity to carry something a bit different, something that marks your gear as uniquely “you.” One way to make such a statement is with an innovative, distinctly designed knife like the Böker Plus S-Rail.

When you look at the Böker Plus S-Rail, you’ll see it’s like no other knife on the market. This compact knife is a Darriel Caston design and features a sliding rail lock opening. You open the knife with the thumb stud and push the blade forward along its namesake rail built into the very slim G-10 handle.

The closest thing to it is an out-the-front automatic, but this is a much more everyday carry-friendly pocket knife because it is a manually activated opening with no springs that can get you in trouble in some areas. The blade is a utility-oriented, thick, chunky D2 steel. Despite its beefy profile, the S-Rail weighs only 0.88 oz, making it one of the lightest pocket knives you can carry today.

What we like: With its unique opening and locking mechanism, which eliminates the need for a heavy frame and handle scale, the Böker Plus S-Rail is exceptionally lightweight and everyday carry-friendly.

What to watch out for: Because of the exposed nature of the blade in the closed position, the S-Rail omits having a well-defined point. If you use a knife to pierce through material more than you chop or slice, you may encounter difficulty using the knife.

Final verdict: The Böker Plus S-Rail, designed by Darriel Caston, is one of the most exciting and innovative everyday carry pocket knives available right now, and the best part is that it’s relatively affordable to boot.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Enrico Fermi was a physicist who made the world’s first nuclear reactor in Chicago. Glow Rhino designed the Fermi folding knife to be a homage to that historical figure with its unique tritium glow-in-the-dark elements that elevate this pocketknife beyond the typical EDC folder. If you’re unfamiliar with tritium, it is a rare and radioactive isotope of hydrogen. Because it glows in the dark, tritium gets used on watches, key fobs, and sensitive equipment indicators that need low-light legibility. And unlike radium, tritium is generally considered safe at the trace amounts used in industry and EDC gear. The Fermi is one of the first times it appears on a folding pocket knife.

The Glow Rhino Fermi features a 3” drop point D2 steel folding blade secured with a liner lock. D2 tool steel offers exceptional hardness, but it is susceptible to rusting. With its black PVD finish on the blade, the Glow Rhino Fermi gets ahead of that problem by providing it enhanced resistance against corrosion. The all-black look of the Fermi knife continues with the grippy G-10 handle scales on its handle.

While the Fermi features a blacked-out appearance, its styling is more minimalist than tactical. What truly sets it apart from other knives is the use of tritium in the handle scales and the thumb studs. Both sides of the G-10 handles have cutouts with a tritium inlay, and the colored thumb stud also features a tritium insert finial. That colored thumb stud is one of the few non-black elements of the blade, aside from the tritium inserts, the exposed steel edge of the blade, and the logo on the knife. You can pick between five colors for that thumbstud, including black if you only want tritium to be the contrasting color element of the knife.

What we like: The tritium elements of the Fermi look stunning in the dark, and it also makes the knife easy to find in low-light situations. And while Glow Rhino specializes in making EDC gear with tritium, they partnered with EDC knifemaker Bestech to make the Fermi, bringing their know-how and pedigree to the table in producing a quality blade for everyday carry.

What to watch out for: If you want to avoid your EDC gear having glow-in-the-dark elements, the Glow Rhino is probably not for you. If you need an exceptionally dark bedroom for a proper night’s sleep, the tritium glow may become annoying enough to be disruptive.

Final verdict: The tritium elements of the Glow Rhino Fermi knife offer the everyday carry enthusiast a unique way to add glowing color to an EDC. It will match well with any other EDC gear featuring tritium, especially if you CCW.

]]>
It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

KA-BAR has been making quality everyday carry fixed and folding EDC blades for decades. One of their original community favorites (aside from the iconic military-issue fighting knife from which the company takes its name) is the Becker BK40. Ethan Becker designed that knife from the ground up as a stout and sturdy folding knife featuring AUS8 stainless steel for the blade.

This year, KA-BAR brought the Becker BK40 into the modern EDC world with the Becker Mini Folder, upgrading the blade to D2 tool steel with a more significant maximum hardness and wear resistance than the original. They’ve also sized it to a more pocketable and EDC-friendly size for modern carry. The original BK40 features a 3.56″ AUS8 stainless steel blade, and the new Becker Mini Folder features a smaller yet highly capable 2.84” D2 tool steel blade. That size difference and upgrades in the overall GFN construction of the knife also brought it down from 4.8 to 2.72 ounces, making for a considerable weight saving and a much more comfortable carry experience.

Aside from the more manageable size, the new KA-BAR Becker Mini features the modified flat-ground drop-point blade that made the BK40 a favored knife. That stout profile gives you maximum cutting belly without making too long of a blade. It also comes with a well-defined point that helps the knife piece through rough material when you want it to. And a sturdy liner lock holds everything in place when it’s not in use.

What we like: It’s nice to see established EDC knife makers like KA-BAR bring some of their best designs from their decades of experience into the modern EDC landscape. The Becker Mini is a worthy upgrade from the original, and its smaller and lighter footprint makes it a good option for most people’s EDC.

What to watch out for: The D2 tool steel featured in the KA-BAR Becker Mini is a better overall performer than the BK40’s AUS8 stainless steel, but the key difference is that D2 tool steel is not stainless. While it won’t immediately rust like carbon steel, you do need to keep its limitations in mind and maintain this knife more often than a stainless steel blade.

Final verdict: If you’re looking for a lightweight, compact everyday carry knife with a strong pedigree and design, the KA-BAR Becker Mini folding liner lock knife is hard to beat. Its updated design comes with better blade steel and a more EDC-friendly size, making it a great everyday carry knife.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The Kalashnikov series of automatic folding knives from Boker Plus remains one of the EDC community’s favorite autos because anyone can get their quality and reliability for a relatively affordable price. Whether a Desert Warrior or a Dessert Warrior Kalashnikov, the design has relied on a traditional push-button spring-open design. Breaking from that mold, Boker Plus released its new OTF automatic Mini Kalashnikov blade this year. The new OTF opening option gives users the lightning-quick deployment they desire without needing to have enough room for the blade to swing into place.

OTF stands for “out-the-front,” and on the Mini Kalashnikov, you actuate a switch on the side, and a 2.68” D2 tool steel blade pops out of the front of the knife, locking into place once it finishes traveling forward. Flick the switch again, and the knife pops back into its textured aluminum handle. This quick and easy opening makes for an easy one-handed operation. It’s also fun to actuate the mechanism over and over in a lightswitch-style fidget, even if you intend to use something other than the knife to accomplish any tasks of material importance.

What we like: Adding OTF automatic mechanisms to the Boker Plus Kalashnikov line is welcome because of their widespread popularity in the EDC knife community. The Mini version of this knife, in particular, lets you carry an OTF folder without too much hassle in places where blade lengths are restricted.

What to watch out for: OTF or not, the Mini Kalashnikov is still considered an automatic-opening knife. That means you need to check your local laws and rules to see whether carrying this knife is something you’re allowed to do first.

Final verdict: If you’ve been waiting for Boker Plus to add an OTF auto to their Kalashnikov lineup, your wait is over. The Mini Kalashnikov OTF is a solid option if you’re looking for a fun and efficient automatic knife for everyday carry.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Taking what they’ve learned from their “Resolute” line of titanium watches, RZE takes another step into the domain of functional adventure gear with the HexEdge Microblade: a compact pocket knife that doesn’t compromise on quality. Measuring just 4.1” extended and 2.44” closed, the HexEdge provides the functionality of a full-sized knife while weighing less than 2 ounces. As a point of reference, that makes it about as long as your average key when closed.

It uses a D2 tool-grade steel blade with a titanium nitride coating to minimize corrosion, increase scratch resistance, and reduce light reflections, making it more discrete. The handle features angular, ergonomic design lines and uses textured G-10 that feels great to hold and helps its user maintain a solid grip. Adding to its usability is its lanyard hole, which doubles as a prying tool or chisel. A reversible clip adds even more options for carrying. Deploying the knife is a satisfying experience that’s easily achieved single-handedly, thanks to its butterfly front flip mechanism—perfect for extended fidget sessions.

What we like: Small, tough, lightweight, and cost-effective, the RZE HexEdge Microblade presents excellent value for the functionality it offers.

What to watch out for: Those with larger hands may find using a knife this small a little awkward.

Final verdict: Well-designed small knives that feature build quality this impressive are few and far between, making the HexEdge an easy recommendation. Pledge one for yourself at their fully funded Kickstarter campaign link below.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

You may be familiar with WESN’s super-compact and super-premium Microblade, which has become their signature platform for fresh colorways and collaborations. Their latest sees them partnering up with Glidr, best known for their highly sought-after colorful catalog of butterfly knife trainers. Glidr has developed a design language all its own, and its use of striking color combinations and unique engraved patterns has set them apart on the market.

This use of color and texture is what they bring to the collaboration, bringing four bright colors and a special engraved design to the Microblade. Underneath, you still get the knife’s solid specs, including a 1.5″ blade in D2 that deploys on bearings and a titanium clip side opposite the colorful aluminum show side. Glidr also brings an exclusive matching lanyard bead to match each knife, along with custom-branded hardware and packaging.

What we like: We’ll never not like colorful options to break up the usual monochrome and stealthy loadout in our EDC.

What to watch out for: This is a limited-edition collab, so when they sell out, they’re gone for good. Also, take note that the knife isn’t ambidextrous and that the Glidr design is only on the show side.

Final verdict: It’s hard enough to get a Glidr trainer, so if you’re a fan of both brands, this is still a solid way to add one to your collection.

The ambidextrous crossbar lock has become extremely popular in the EDC folding knife community. With all the convenience and versatility the technology provides over standard liner and frame lock designs, it’s easy to see why. New in 2023, Kershaw has introduced four everyday carry knives featuring DuraLock, their take on the crossbar lock trend. Each of these knives features a consistent and attractively-modern design that looks good in your hand. We’ll introduce you to each one and explain why they’re great options if you want to add a knife of this style to your everyday carry today.

Kershaw Covalent

It starts with the Covalent, a flipper pocket knife with a lightweight gray polymer handle and a 3.5″ D2 tool steel blade fashioned into a drop-point shape. The polymer handle features the Kershaw DuraLock ambidextrous steel crossbar, and the scales are reinforced with stainless steel for rigidity during rough use.

Kershaw Monitor

The Monitor takes its design cues from the Covalent, but it sizes things down to more EDC-friendly 3″ D2 tool steel. It also features a discreet blacked-out design, including the blade itself. This knife, just like the Covalent, features an ambidextrous pocket clip, highlighting the versatility of the DuraLock design, letting you carry this knife in any pants pocket.

Kershaw Heist

If you don’t like flipper-style opening knives because of the risk that they might deploy in your pants pocket accidentally, Kershaw made the Heist to accommodate your needs. The Heist features a 3.1″ D2 tool steel drop-point blade that features manual thumbstud actuation on both sides of the blade. Once you have the knife open, all that’s required to secure it is to pull back on the lock to unlock the edge and bring it back home into its polymer handle.

Kershaw Iridium

With the Iridium, Kershaw offers an all-metal option for EDCers who are not fans of the polymer handles on the other three knives. The Kershaw Iridium has a 4.25″ grey aluminum handle with a burnt orange lanyard loop at the rear. At 3.38 ounces in total, the Iridium weighs a bit more than the rest, but its increased heft gives the user a feeling of enhanced quality and sturdiness during the cut. And with its 3.5″ spear point D2 tool steel blade, you’ll be able to cut, chop, slice, and pierce your way through the way when you need it.

]]>
It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Cleaver-style knives are intended for rougher duty than the standard folding EDC blade. Their chunky blade shape makes them great for chopping tasks, after all. But as with any folding blade, the weakest point is the folding mechanism itself. That’s not a problem with the new fixed-blade version of CRKT’s Razel knife. The new Razel, made in collaboration with Jon Graham, features a rigid full-tang D2 tool steel construction that provides one-piece reliability when the going gets tough.

The original Razel GT folding knife featured a quick flipper-assisted opening mechanism. This new fixed-blade Razel is always ready to go, with no moving parts that need to lock into place before you can get to work. The 2.97″ D2 blade has also been made beefier, with a squared-off chisel tip and a sturdy spine that lets you hammer this knife into rough material when needed. An ergonomic handle has been cut into the full tang, and the resin-fiber scales help ensure a firm grip on the knife during hard use.

Of course, being a fixed-blade knife means it will likely have to go on a hip or neck sheath instead of your pockets for everyday carry. But it weighs 0.1oz less than the original Razel knife, and the included Kydex sheath makes carrying this useful EDC tool easy.

What we like: Cleaver-style blades are all the rage in EDC, and it’s nice to see them start to focus on genuinely heavy-duty use. Additionally, the red rivets in the resin fiber handle offer a beautiful contrast to the knife’s overall look.

What to watch out for: The fixed-blade Razel is longer than your standard folding EDC knife, and if you don’t like carrying a knife in a sheath, it may not be for you.

Final verdict: If your EDC needs require a hard-use chisel or cleaver-style blade, the new Razel is a welcome option.

The post Ridge Summit Knife appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
A knife is one of those pieces of EDC gear that can have meaning beyond being a tool. Picking the knife you use daily can be a strangely personal experience. Like a quality watch or even a wallet, a good knife can become a symbol of the person using it. With that in mind, the Summit Knife by The Ridge is an excellent option for EDC as it is both a functional tool and a symbol of doing more with less. When it came out in 2018, it was only available in a lightweight 3k Carbon Fiber Weave material. Starting today, it’s now available in new color options and materials to better match your story (and Ridge’s product lineup).

The Ridge is best known for its use of unique and robust materials. That same attention to the quality metal you find in its metal wallets shows in the Summit Knife. The 2.75″ blade uses D2 steel: a solid option for EDC that hits the sweet spot between durability and affordability, which you can learn more about in our beginner’s guide to blade steel.

The Summit Knife also has good edge retention, which is essential in a daily knife. This means that if you follow best practices and sharpen your knife every once in a while, it stays sharp for longer. It combines increased resistance to wear and tear with a drop point blade shape that makes it a solid option for everyday use. Whether you’re chopping, slicing, or shaving down, the drop point blade has long been a go-to blade shape in the EDC community, and this is another example of that.

Depending on your style, there are different kinds of handle materials you can choose from. The original Summit Knife was only available in 3k Carbon Fiber Weave before, but now it comes in new materials to better match some of Ridge’s most popular wallets and key cases. You can still opt for the carbon fiber if you want, but now you can also get it in Aluminum Black, Forged Ember, Aluminum Navy, and Aluminum Gunmetal.

This team at Ridge sketched up and built this knife with EDC in mind, and its build and design reflect that. It’s a compact knife that emphasizes being lightweight and easy to use. When closed, it measures 3.7” x 0.8” x 0.5”, which is a perfect size for most pockets or bags. Plus, having a blade length of 2.75” is ideal for EDC considering most cities have laws prohibiting larger blades. That said, check your local laws to ensure you comply with local regulations.

The Ridge Summit Knife follows the same design principles that the company prides itself on regarding its wallets. A simple design and robust build materials make an effective product. It features a rectangular body that, when closed, can easily slip into your pocket without getting snagged on something. The stainless steel pocket clip is roughly the same width as the handle, which keeps it attached and prevents it from jostling around too much.

While that’s all good and well, how it feels in the hand matters. The minimal design makes using the Summit Knife pretty straightforward. The knife also has a thumb stud on the blade that makes one-handed deployment a breeze. Depending on which color knife you get, the thumb stud will also have a different accent color which is a nice touch. It gives the blade a touch of color to add some personality to your EDC without drawing attention.

The knife has a smooth action when deployed, and it snaps into place thanks to the liner lock system. It can take a few tries to get used to it when you first take it out of the box, but opening and closing the knife with one hand becomes second nature. Deploying the blade is easy to do when you need it, but the resistance of the liner lock system is also strong enough that you don’t need to worry about it accidentally opening. Plus, good knurling along the blade’s spine gives you a place to rest your thumb and guide the knife for serious cutting jobs.

Keeping it simple can go a long way regarding everyday carry. When a tool is overengineered, it becomes complicated and loses its effectiveness. That isn’t a problem here. The Summit Knife keeps it simple, sticking with a tried-and-true design and trusted EDC materials to offer a tough knife that will last. Whether you’re looking for your first knife, looking to upgrade from a cheap knife you found at the dollar store, or looking for something that can handle daily tasks, so you don’t need to pull out your custom build blade for every little thing, the Summit Knife can find a place in everyone’s kit. The new colors only give you more options to choose from with what is already a premium knife.

Created as an update to Medford’s best-selling knife, the Praetorian Scout takes everything that made the original great while adding welcome material improvements. Starting things off, the Praetorian Scout employs a 3.625“ blade made from D2 steel covered with a black PVD coating, increasing both its durability and corrosion resistance. This gives the Scout’s blade composition the resilience to match its signature chunky profile, making it a true workhorse knife. You still get the rest of the standard Praetorian features, including the modified tanto blade shape, its deep finger groove for deployment, and its heavy jimping on the spine.

The handles come in G-10 scales, increasing its grip and resilience without adding too much bulk. They also feature heavy jimping on the spine, completing the overbuilt look while providing even and even more solid purchase in hand. Within the scales is a titanium liner lock frame to hold the blade in place while in use. Finally, for ease of carry, this 100% made in the USA knife comes with a titanium pocket clip, which, when combined with the smooth surface of the handles, afford a smoother carry inside your pockets, preventing excess wear and tear. Medford’s Praetorian line has set the bar for years for ultra-tough, heavy-duty knives—pick up a Praetorian Scout for yourself at the link below.

If a speedy deployment is at the top of your list when considering a new knife, this offering by Benchmade is definitely worth your attention. Joining Benchmade’s select OTF lineup, the Mini Infidel takes everything that made the original Benchmade Infidel great, and shrinks it down to a more pocketable size. Despite having a reduced footprint, the Mini Infidel’s blade remains a significant 3.1“, made out of durable D2 steel and featuring a spearpoint shape for added proficiency during piercing tasks.

Once retracted, the knife measures in at only 4”, and with its pocket clip can carry comfortably inside most pockets. The handles are made out of T-6061 aluminum, keeping things sturdy and lightweight. These handles also feature a “stepped” design to prevent the knife from slipping away from your hands. Finally, a front sliding switch takes care of deployment in a more comfortable and convenient way, compared to other OTF knives that feature a side switch. Pick one up at the link below.

If you’re in the market for a mid-size folding knife with a modern look, the Bestech Beluga is definitely worth your attention. Measuring in at a respectable 3.125″, the drop point blade stands out thanks to its two-tone appearance. The black finish starts at the spine of the blade where the jimping lies and extends all the way to the tip. This gives it a nice contrast with the satin finish of the D2 steel blade. The G-10 handles feature precision-cut ergonomics for a comfortable and secure grip; use of the material also keeps the overall weight down at a lighter 3.8 oz. They also feature a hi-vis orange colorway, making it easier to find inside a messy bag or if you ever drop the knife in the outdoors. A flipper tab is in charge of deployment, enhanced by ceramic ball bearings for a smoother opening. Once the blade is out, it’s held securely in place via a liner lock. Once you’re done with your work, you can close up the knife and comfortably carry it thanks to its tip-up pocket clip.
