Even in a time when you can carry tiny, rechargeable keychain flashlights and powerful AA flashlights for your primary source of illumination, there’s still a case to be made for the balance of portability and function that a good AAA flashlight provides. Small enough to be part of a minimalist carry, and powerful enough these days to rival bigger lights, perhaps one of the biggest draws to this format is how easy it is to find a replacement battery, and to carry a spare. Here we’ve put together 15 of the best AAA battery LED flashlights to give you options for simple, compact and reliable lights for your EDC.

While you can’t go wrong with any of the lights we’ve listed here, it helps to know a little of the terminology to make sense of these lights’ impressive specs and features. To brush up, check out our beginner’s guide to LED flashlights.

The small yet powerful i3T EOS is able to output an impressive 180 lumens for over 20 minutes with its Philips Luxeon TX emitter, all on a single regular AAA alkaline battery. Its rubber-coated forward-clicky tailswitch allows you to switch between its two output levels—5 and 180 lumens—while also providing momentary on for when you need a quick burst of light. An IPX-8 rated anodized aluminum body keeps the weight low at 1.45 ounces, while featuring helix-styled body cutouts that gives a distinct Olight look while still providing grip. The included two-way clip keeps this light easy to carry in a pocket, attached to a bag, or clipped onto a hat brim for hands-free operation.

The Fenix LD02 V2.0 makes a strong case for a specialized EDC light with its refined design and unique LED combination. It carries both a warm white high-CRI Cree XQ-E HI emitter and a 365nM UV light. The former is for general use, and can be adjusted via tailswitch to 70 lumens for high, 25 lumens for medium, and a runtime-friendly 1 lumen for low that runs for 75 hours off a single AAA battery. The UV light is useful for checking counterfeit currency marks or medically dangerous substances. An anodized aluminum body is paired with a stainless steel bezel, clip, and push button assembly to provide IP68-level protection and create a premium feel in hand.

The JETBeam Jet-U packs a punch with a Cree XP-G2 LED pushing 135 lumens at max output, enhanced for a bigger spot and spill by a built-in TIR lens. Lightweight yet durable aluminum construction provides IPX-8 rated water resistance while keeping the weight down to 13 grams with the included clip but without an installed battery. A wide area of knurling on the head lets you easily operate the twist interface, giving access to three well-spaced modes in a high-mid-low loop: 135 lumens at high, 25 at mid, and 1.5 at low for a maximum of 35 hours of runtime.

The Foursevens Preon P1 MKIII is one of the most refined AAA lights you can buy. A very high CRI (92+) is achieved by using a Nichia 219C emitter, providing a sunlight-like beam with great color rendering, maxing out at 100 lumens. The IPX-8 rated aluminum chassis features machined ridges on the ends and a tapered mid barrel, that, combined with a beefed-up stainless steel clip, ensures great pocket retention and better ergonomics than previous iterations. The programmable UI lets you pick from six different configurations to access 7 different modes, including a 1 lumen moonlight mode, SOS and a 30-second burst.

The only light in this list that comes in an L-shaped, right angle format, the Manker E02 Ti is a versatile light that combines its form factor with a reversible clip and magnetic tailcap. It offers multiple carry and usage options, including acting as a small but powerful headlamp. For the LED, you have a choice of a high-output Cree XP-G3 for 220 lumens of maximum output, or a high-CRI Nichia 219C at 180 lumens. A top-mounted button allows you to cycle through its five modes, including a 0.6-lumen Moonlight mode. This version’s titanium body is rated to IPX-6 water resistance, and comes in natural or black stonewashed finish.

At just 72mm long and 15 grams without a battery, the compact and lightweight Sofirn C01S features a TIR optic to enhance illumination, and a 95-CRI Luminus SST20 emitter for great color rendition. A twist-type interface turns this light on at the high 100-lumen setting first, and quick twists back off an on again gives you a 3 lumen moonlight mode. Knurling on the head and shaft makes operating the C01S easy, while a reversible clip lets you carry this bezel-down or bezel-up in your pocket, or turn it into a hat light. The notched tailcap gives you options to attach a magnet, a tritium tube, or the included split ring for keychain carry. This small yet versatile light comes in different anodized body colors as well.

Most people, especially in the medical community, will be familiar with the classic penlight. The Nitecore MT06MD, while designed for first responders and medical professionals, makes for a great EDC light for those looking to be prepared for anything. Powered by two AAA bateries, the Nichia 219B LED hits a maximum of 180 lumens, while a smooth and optimized reflector ensures a uniform and clear bright spot. The tailcap switch cycles through three different output levels, and the default Low mode at 4 lumens, combined with a tint that eliminates the blue-light hazard, is perfect for pupil inspection. A stainless steel clip paired with an IPX-8 rated aluminum body helps keep this light handy and ready for duty.

The latest iteration of Maratac’s miniature EDC light features a new cool white Cree G3 emitter that pushes out 180 lumens on a regular AAA battery. A twisty interface gives access to 3 levels of brightness, while a polished aluminum orange peel reflector, combined with a new AR-coated lens, keeps a clean and uniform beam that’s good for near to medium distances. Every specimen is hand-finished, and a factory-installed clip ensures that the finish is even and doesn’t come scratched when new. That’s because with a chassis machined from solid copper billet, the new REV 6 develops patina with use, giving you a light that builds character over time.

There’s a reason the Streamlight Microstream is one of the most popular flashlights on this site. It’s simple, reliable, effective, and most importantly, inexpensive. Sometimes you just need something that works, and even if it’s low on the lumens the Microstream makes them count. And with a lightweight, anodized aluminum body and pocket clip, it’s easy to EDC in your pocket or on your bag as a backup.

300 lumens is a specification reserved for much bigger flashlights, not one you would expect out of something that takes an AAA battery. But that’s exactly what the SureFire Titan Plus is capable of. Along with that beefy output is equally-tough construction in nickel-plated brass and plenty of options for everyday carry, including a split ring, removable pocket clip, and a quick-detach tailcap that lets you deploy the light with ease. Not bad for something only 3.375” long and weighing 2 ounces!

Most people carry an EDC pen on their person to ensure that they can easily sign checks, take down notes, or write in their journal, wherever they may be. Sometimes, though, the conditions you may find yourself in may not be ideal for writing effectively with regular pens. Rain, wet and muddy conditions, having to write upside down, or more extreme circumstances such as intense heat or cold, or even zero gravity, require a bit of technology to make sure you can even write anything at all.

In this guide, we’re highlighting ten of the best EDC pens you can write with anywhere. Whether you choose a pen that uses pressurized ink refills or one that pressurizes its own cartridges through a built-in mechanism, these pens will ensure that you can lay down the ink for your notes or journals, regardless of where and in what position you use them.

We all know how the story goes: Paul C. Fisher and his company supposedly invested a million dollars to create a pen that astronauts could use in space. The original AG7 “anti-gravity” pen was patented in 1965 and taken into space in 1967 by NASA. The pen did not require gravity to get the ink going, but rather used pressurized nitrogen to consistently and evenly push the gel-like ink out regardless of conditions, in zero gravity or upside down. The Fisher AG7 Astronaut Pen is a timeless design that holds up to this day with reliable writing performance, classic looks, and a fidgety click mechanism that uses a pusher to deploy the tip and a side click button to retract. Put a little bit of history in your shirt pocket with the AG7, still available in the original chrome-plated brass body.

The Rite in Rain All-Weather Clicker Pen features ink that can not only, as the name suggests, write effectively in the rain, it also can write in grease and mud without smudging or smearing. The 0.9mm tip also writes under water, at any angle, and continues to perform even in intense temperatures. The design of the proprietary pressurized ink cartridge ensures that the ink won’t leak in your pocket or evaporate, avoiding unnecessary ink loss. The pen is 5.375″ long and features multiple grooves in the rubberized body and plastic grip section to facilitate use in the extreme conditions this pen was designed for.

The Pilot Downforce uses a different approach to providing a write-anywhere and take-anywhere pen. A mechanism in the top button channels air pressure into the refill, providing smooth and reliable ink flow in any condition. The spring-loaded binder clip is the retraction mechanism, and this ensures that you don’t mark your other stuff with ink when you clamp it down for attaching. Its wide jaws also mean you can easily clip the Downforce to your thickest pockets or book covers. The body and grip themselves are also thick, making the pen easier and more comfortable to use over longer periods. Meant as a take-anywhere pen, the Downforce uses antibacterial ingredients in the body material, giving you a degree of hygienic safety from an instrument that will see a lot of use in your EDC.

It’s also a great write-everywhere pen due to its internal construction. Instead of using a pressurized ink cartridge like most of the pens in this list, the Airpress has a built-in mechanism that primes and pressurizes the ink cartridge every time you click to deploy it. This allows you to write upside down and in cold conditions, and even on wet paper. The tactile feel of the clicker mechanism and the subtle sound it makes as it pressurizes the cartridge make for a fun and fidgety pen for EDC.

Dialing in your needs and having the right bag to use at any given moment is what EDC is all about. Bonus points if your choice of EDC bag is durable and fulfills your needs for both your daily tasks and long-distance travel. The Nomatic Navigator Series was designed with the premise of having the right bag for every adventure. It combines a clean, streamlined aesthetic with durable water-resistant materials to give you bags you can take everywhere on any given day. A simple bar (or two) of reflective material combines with a subdued Nomatic logo for distinct yet understated branding that makes these go-anywhere bags also go well with anything.

The individual pieces of the Navigator series were made to work well with each other with a unified design language, and they come in three categories: three Travel bags for long-distance trip packing, three Everyday carry bags, and finally, three Accessories that you can combine and take along with the other products. This bag ecosystem is offered on their Kickstarter page in different bundles with different options to match your personal carry needs. All of the bags’ exteriors come in 500D Kodra with a kiss coating on the front face, with PU Leather Rock T2000 panels for the Nomatic logo. The new signature reflective bars also come with micro pieces of glass as part of the texture to ensure super bright reflectivity. The bags all come with YKK and Zoom zippers, with custom metal pulls as part of the new design.

The versatile Navigator Travel Backpack 32L was made with the traveler in mind, featuring a sleeve for up to a 16″ laptop among its other organization features. This includes multiple stretch pockets, zippered mesh pockets, internal compression straps, and an RFID pocket for your valuables. Load-lifting straps help ease the load on your shoulders and combines with internal aluminum stays, a tuck-away waist strap, and an EVA foam back panel with black bonded Spandura with a harness system that lets you comfortably carry this pack, no matter how heavy the load. An easy access top pocket for small items, external carry straps for light items such as rainwear, and a hidden ID card slot are features appreciated during travels. Four grab handles and a pass-through strap for keeping this pack settled on the trolley handle of your bigger luggage make the Navigator Travel Backpack a great companion during your longer trips. In case you were packing more than expected on your return trip, a zippered system lets it easily expand to 41L of capacity.

For their roller luggage option, the Navigator Carry-On 37L combines water-resistant materials with a hard Makrolon plastic shell to protect up to five days’ worth of your clothes and gear during long assignments or trips. Like the Travel Backpack, it’s also expandable, this time to 45L, and features similar internal organization options. A separate compartment for your laptop, tech, and documents keeps them safe and organized, while a 3-stage retractable aluminum handle and four exterior grab handles ensure you’re never without a way to grab onto the Navigator Carry-On. Both the Travel Backpack and the Carry-On feature custom tamper-proof zipper handles that interlock and can be used with a TSA lock for enhanced security while travelling. Replaceable Hersun wheels ensure the Carry-On keeps on rolling.

For the Everyday bags, we have a backpack and two different sizes of slings. Featuring the same materials, build quality, and aesthetics of the two previous bags from the Travel series, the Navigator Backpack 15L is your everyday commuter pack that can handle up to a a 16″ laptop and has a foam formed back panel similar to it’s bigger brother for comfort and airflow. A hidden bottle pocket keeps the streamlined look even when you’re packing water, and two removable external carry straps let you easily bring along your coat or jacket. A concealed front pocket lets you stash you smaller and flatter items as well as your keys via an internal leash. And because this is also designed for travel, three exterior grab handles make the Navigator Backpack easy to retrieve from cabin storage or wherever you choose to put it.

The Navigator Sling 6L fits up to an 11“ laptop or large tablet, and features a hidden bottle pocket that lets you bring along a full water bottle—something that most slings don’t let you do. There’s plenty of internal organization for your tech and gear, including an RFID-blocking zippered pocket and a quick access card slot on the main strap which is useful for public transport cards. A pull-out stabilizer strap keeps the sling stable and secure as you zip through your everyday adventures. The smaller Sling 1L is meant for cross-body or fanny pack style carry, but is no slouch in the capacity department as a zippered expansion system lets it go from 1 liter to 3, and also doubles as a way for your to carry a water bottle. Both slings feature an EVA foam back panel for comfort and avoiding that sweaty spot on your back or chest.

Last but not least, you have three Accessories bags meant to work well with the rest of the Navigator series. The Vacuum Bag 2.0 lets you compress your soft goods like clothing for easy packing into your luggage, with or without the use of an actual vacuum. The Tech Organizer features multiple coated mesh pockets and internal elastic straps to let you organize the gadgets and tech you may want to bring along on your trip. It features a loop for hanging this clamshell pouch at your destination, as well as a hand strap that lets you hold it while you quickly access its contents. Finally, the Navigator Collapsible Backpack is a full excursion pack with two external water bottle pockets and a slot for a 15“ laptop or a bladder for even more water capacity, making it a prefect companion for your walk-around exploration at your destination. It’s lightweight and durable, and folds to fit perfectly in the internal zippered pockets of the Travel Backpack or Navigator Carry-On, keeping out of the way until you need it.

For a solid selection of luggage, bags, and accessories that can help you see your daily and out-of-town adventures through, the new Nomatic Navigator Series has you covered with fresh and functional designs. Check out the entire line at their fully funded Kickstarter campaign page below.

When bigger tasks around the house call for a bigger knife, sometimes your everyday blade just won’t cut it. A compact blade is great in the pocket and for smaller tasks, but when your day calls for working on larger projects, dealing with heavier materials, or processing huge piles of boxes, a larger blade is a tool for the job. Designed with inspiration from the Magdalena Mountains in New Mexico, the CRKT Montosa is built for work and comes packed with unique and practical features. From its clipped nose blade to its ergonomic handles, the Montosa is an affordable workhorse for getting the job done.

The CRKT Montosa comes from the workshop of Richard Rogers, whose earlier design for the CRKT CEO offered a popular gent’s knife option for EDCers. The Montosa comes from his design of a mid-sized utility knife, and its key features reflect its purpose. The blade is a modified sheepsfoot that’s great for slicing tasks, and the clipped portion gives it a reinforced tip that you can use for piercing. The 3.25″ blade is flat ground from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, giving it decent edge retention and durability while still being easy to sharpen and maintain. Bead-blasting gives it a clean and consistent finish, and contrasts it with the ambidextrous black thumbstuds. It’s a handsome workhorse blade that makes the Montosa a good stay-at-home utility knife, as well as a capable EDC and outdoor tool.

For deployment and retention, a familiar locking liner is nestled in grooved G10 handle scales that provide a comfortable and secure grip. The generous 4.46″ long handle gives you room to grasp the knife, helping with control during use. A purple anodized washer encircles the machined pivot screw, and is matched with an aluminum backspacer for a bit of contrast and visual flair. The scales feature a cutout so you can use the hole in the backspacer to loop in a lanyard for customized aesthetics and to assist deployment. The knife’s ambidextrous thumb studs are matched with a reversible deep-carry pocket clip, allowing you to use this knife with either hand. At just 3.2 ounces and with no protruding parts when closed, the Montosa is easily pocketable for everyday use.

For an affordable yet capable knife for EDC and outdoor tasks, check out the CRKT Montosa. Like the mountain it was named after, it’s beautiful to look at, but stalwart and hardy. You can pick one up at the link below.

The post Gerber Prybrid X and Prybrid Utility appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
Whether prying open cans for a project, removing nails from wood, or un-jamming stuck objects around the house, pry bars are actually the best tool for the job, and not (to the unfortunate error of some) the tip of your blade. In the same way, a pry bar isn’t effective as a cutting tool either, more a blunt instrument than a precision slicer. But combining both tools in a useful, pocket-friendly package makes Gerber’s newest hybrid tools a worthy addition to anyone’s carry. The new Prybrid X and Prybrid Utility combine some of the most used functions in your daily setup into a sleek, stylish and lightweight package. Both are based on the form factor of utility knives, offering a compact, non-threatening option for everyday prying and cutting tasks.

Gerber Prybrid X

The Prybrid X comes with eight functions and uses a No. 11 hobby blade, which can be replaced at hobby or hardware stores. The slide mechanism is housed in a steel casing and allows the blade to deploy and retract smoothly, and fully extending the blade allows you to take it out for replacement. Aluminum scales give the tool lightweight strength while also protecting the steel housing. The other end of the tool integrates six functions: a pry bar, a nail puller, two sizes of flathead drivers, a wire stripper, and a bottle opener. Finally, a length of 550 paracord comes woven into the body, allowing you to use it as a lanyard to help with grip and retrieval, and to unwrap it when you need access to some extra cordage.

At under 4″ long, 0.25″ thick and 1.7 ounces, the Prybrid X is easy enough to carry in you pocket or even hang off a keychain. It comes in two colorways: Urban Blue, which combines sliver anodized aluminum scales with a dark blue paracord wrap, and OD Green, which combines a black stonewashed finish for the scales with green paracord.

Gerber Prybrid Utility

The larger Prybrid Utility takes its cues from utility knives and uses standard box cutter blades. It still has eight functions, but its ergonomic shape allows it to be more capable for harder tasks. It has a similar slide mechanism to the Prybrid X, deploying and sliding out in two steps to allow for blade replacement. Textured and grooved G10 scales sandwich the main body and spine of the tool, and help with handling and grip. The spine provides a rigid platform for the pry bar, which also combines with a wire stripper, nail puller, flathead drivers, and bottle opener, in a similar configuration. Instead of including paracord, the Prybrid Utility features a cord cutter notch at the bottom of the tool to sever cordage or webbing without having to slide the blade out.

With a weight of 2.9 ounces and a closed length of 4.25″, it’s still light and portable enough for EDC, especially for all the utility you have at hand. Like the Prybrid X, it comes in two variants: either with Tactical Gray or OD Green G10 scales.

If you want to have the utility of a blade, pry bar, and more in your pocket, or have a lightweight combination tool as functional backups to your favorite blade and tools, the Gerber Prybrids deserve a spot in your EDC. Check both out at Gerber’s site the link below.

While many tactical or duty-oriented flashlights don’t come in sizes that comfortably fit in your pocket, there’s plenty of reasons why one is worth a spot in your EDC. A larger profile often comes with a bigger reflector (for more throw), or a larger battery that gives exponentially longer runtimes. And since they’re built for duty or other life-threatening scenarios, reliability is a priority when it comes to build quality, meaning you have a light you can rely on especially during emergencies. With a tactical focus in mind while also taking the best features of their everyday lights, Olight gives their Warrior X the Pro upgrade, adding more output, runtime, and even better usability as an everyday light.

The Warrior X Pro runs on a new and propriety power source, a customized 21700 battery with a 5000mAh capacity. This allows the light to achieve a maximum of 2,250 lumens and 600-meter beam distance from its neutral white Cree XHP35 HI LED, while having a slightly bigger profile than a large permanent marker. The battery charges inside the light through the use of Olight’s new MCC3 magnetic USB charging cable, which provides faster charging than previous generations at a 2A charge rate, and is backward compatible with older Olight models.

The Pro retains the original Warrior X’s dual-output interface, and on a full charge, gives  a runtime of up to 8 hours on its 300-lumen Low mode. On High, it can hold 2,250 lumens for two minutes, after which the light’s temperature and battery-based stepdown dials it down to 1,000 lumens for 1 hour and 40 minutes, then drops to Low for a final 23 minutes of runtime before complete battery depletion. An innovative feature of the Warrior X line is the vibration function that acts as a power indicator: the light vibrates every 5 minutes when the battery is under 30% capacity, every minute when below 10%, and every 10 seconds when under 5%. This provides a discreet and tactile reminder to charge the light during heavy use.

The raised electronic tail switch is more glove-friendly and comfortable to use than previous designs, and actuates with a firm press, helping to prevent any accidental activation of the light. This conserves battery and prevents it from burning a hole in your pack or pocket. Like the vibration function, it keeps the Warrior X Pro’s operation discreet with near-silent actuation. The switch gives you easy access to the two output levels, as well as momentary activation with a half-press. Olight also keeps the Warrior X Pro’s interface simple and efficient for its intended purpose by not adding unnecessary modes like Strobe or SOS.

In hand, the 5.87″ long IPX-8 waterproof aluminum body design offers a firm grip with or without gloves. The large 1.54″ head diameter slims down to 1.03″ for the body, which, combined with the grooves designed into the shaft and the cooling fins on the light’s business end, provides a solid grip even in wet conditions.

Adapting to both EDC and tactical use, the Warrior X Pro comes with different accessories to customize your grip and carry.  You can use it with a conventional aluminum tactical ring paired with the sturdy, non-reversible clip, or you can opt for the included silicon rubber TGR (Tactical Grip Ring) as a grippier option. Olight also includes a nylon hardshell holster with magnetic closure for on-the-belt carry or attaching to MOLLE-compatible straps. Last but not least, a magnetic tailcap also allows you to hang the light vertically from any metallic surface.

With improvements in power and charging and refinements in ergonomics and design, the Olight Warrior X Pro deserves some heavy consideration as your next flashlight, whether for tactical use or as a solid everyday performer. Check it out at the link below.
