When I first discovered DPx many, many years ago when I started to get into better EDC gear, I will admit, I didn’t feel cool enough to own one. From the laughing skull logo, to the amazing fit and finish, and even the awesome consideration to make lefty models, DPx knives have always felt out of my league (in a good way), and a brand I’ve kept in the back of my mind in the years since. While I haven’t had the chance to handle or own one in a long time, the HEST’s fourth version released this year is quite possibly its ultimate iteration.

Its biggest and most important change is the HEST 4.0’s use of this year’s superlative steel, CPM MagnaCut, as well as being one of the rare DPx flipper folders. In many ways the steel is perfect for the type of knife the HEST aims to be, one with zero compromises and built for a lifetime of hard use, thanks to its top-tier properties across the board. The drop point blade itself is a big chunk of steel at 3.15″ long and 0.19″ thick, and carries the signature DPx features like the blade notch and wire stripper jimping. The handle is a sandwich of American heavy grip G-10 and grade 5 titanium, and houses its framelock, the bearings that give the HEST a truly satisfying snap, and rounded out with the HEST standard hex bit driver and replaceable tungsted carbide glass breaker. The handle also allows for a full-handed grip, with the front flipper tab and rear shape locking in your fingers, and the G-10 doing its job to really lock in your grip. The clip is also reversible, with a large curve touching and adding additional frame lock strength should you keep it in right-hand orientation.

I think the HEST 4.0 is “the one” for me, and not just when it comes to DPx knives. I felt it from the moment I unboxed it and flipped it open for the first time, and cemented itself the moment I cut something with a fully locked-in grip. It’s everything I want from a tactical/hard-use knife, and the only conceivable drawback I can come up with is it doesn’t come as a lefty, but even then, it’s a small price to pay for a blade of this caliber. We’ve been incredibly impressed by the releases from WE Knife Co. lately, and the new WE Knife Attor is another gorgeous reason why. The brainchild of Croatian custom knifemaker Dalibor Bergam and WE Knife Company, the Attor boasts a 3.55″ modified Persian blade made from Heimskringla Damasteel, and a handle made from a single piece of 6AL4V titanium (the latest in a long line of fantastic WE integral folders, including the recent Ezinta), complete with an eye-catching Timascus inlay. A titanium frame lock ensures extra security, while caged ceramic bearings allow for smooth blade deployment via either the thumb hole or thumb stud, the latter of which creates a subtle but impressive design detail when it rests right beside a cutout in the handle when deployed. Weighing in at just 4.75 oz, it’s easy to carry around with its tip-up, right-side pocket clip (also made from 6AL4V titanium). Other models in the Attor line come with CPM 20CV steel and variations of bead-blasted, stonewashed, and polished titanium handles.

Tactile Knife Co. has been on a roll lately with a number of impressive knife releases, and their latest standout is the Mariner 2—a modern iteration of a beloved heritage piece. Redesigned in collaboration with legendary knifemaker and father of tactical folders, Bob Terzuola, who crafted the OG Mariner in the 1980s, the Mariner 2 brings a fresh, modern edge to a time-tested classic. The Superlock mechanism by Malaysian knifemaker Snecx Tan is relatively new to the folding knife scene, but it’s quickly become one of our favorites, making the the Tactile Knife Co. Chupacabra check all our boxes when it comes to features we’d like to see on a folding knife. It uses a coil spring and a lock bar on the knife’s spine that allows for easy and ambidextrous one-handed operation. The Chupacabra’s design allows you to disassemble the knife with a simple T8 torx driver, making it easy to maintain. Its 3.30” sheepsfoot blade is crafted from MagnaCut, a premium steel highly sought after by many knife enthusiasts for providing exceptional cutting performance and durability while minimizing tradeoffs found on other steels on the market. We’ve been a fan of the COAST Founder’s Series Origin knives for some time because of their slim, sleek, and everyday carry-friendly design. Arcane Design continues to be one of the most interesting knife brands on the market to me, with founder Israel Bacchus’s sci-fi and horror-infused designs right up my alley for unique but fully functional designs. Their latest release is the AUTOMATON, a beefy drop point home to a big blade and draped in premium details. The 3.5″ S90V blade comes hollow ground on both the main edge and the top swedge creating a nice contrasting finish, deploying on dual textured thumbstuds. The AUTOMATON uses a liner lock built into the slim, titanium handle accented by a custom pivot collar (I just love the lines and grooves on this, playing into the rest of the details like the handle chamfering) and a deep carry pocket clip. Like many Arcane Design models, you have plenty of options for the finish, material, and color variant for your knife.

While Vosteed is on a tear putting out fresh and innovative knives, including outstanding collaborations with makers like TuffKnives, as well as their recent hit with the Ankylo’s V-anchor pivot lock, my favorite knife from the brand still has to be the Thunderbird. On paper, it shouldn’t be; it’s a larger blade than I generally prefer at 3.25″, tanto isn’t always my first choice for a shape, and the Trek Lock also isn’t technically fully ambidextrous (though operates fine as a lefty).

But then all it takes is to flip the Thunderbird open a few times to truly understand what it’s about. The knife is incredibly fun to use and deploy across all six of its possible deployment methods between its thumb cutout, fuller, and flipper tabs. The larger blade lends itself to an extremely satisfying heft as it swings out on caged ceramic ball bearings. The Thunderbird’s original G-10 handles are grippy and lightweight, its titanium handles sound amazing with a satisfying ring when deploying the blade, and now its latest iteration with PEI handles hops on trend with the popular material. You get the lightest version of the knife yet at 2.88 ounces, while also a peek into its mechanism and skeletonized liners. Is this the best version of the Thunderbird yet? That remains to be seen, but in the meantime, one I’m excited to get my hands on and add to the rest of the flock.

While I love Vosteed for their supremely fidgety folding knives, it’s also nice to see them try new things in different form factors, and fixed blades are one of my particular EDC passions. The Mink XL is an upgrade to the original clip point Mink they released last year, an outdoors-focused fixie offering great value for those looking to cover their blade bases from the brand. This year’s new Mink XL retains the same use of full-tang Nitro-V steel paired with Micarta handles, but this time in a larger 3.99″ sheepsfoot profile, giving you a bigger blade and all the edge length you need for heavier piercing and cutting tasks. Double jimping on the blade gives you grip versatility when needed, and a multi-point Kydex sheath gives you the same flexibility when it comes time to stow away the Mink. The new Wizard Series by Artisan Cutlery and up-and-coming designer Dustin Rhodes is an elegant folding knife platform that impresses with a lot of attention to detail across its models. Don’t let the compact 4″ handle fool you – the Wizard deploys a robust 3.47″ clip-point blade, making it a versatile cutting tool. The knife offers three deployment methods—thumbstuds, a front-flipper, and a button lock—all complemented by smooth ceramic bearings for frictionless operation. The Wizard is available in four configurations, with The Mage becoming our easy favorite because of its balance of materials and pricing. It features a sand-polished S90V blade, Titanium Damascus inlays, and bright blue accents throughout the handle. WE Knife Co. just dropped the Ezinta, and it’s a real standout. Amid a flurry of releases from both CIVIVI and WE, the Ezinta shines with its detailed and beastly design, once again showing WE’s manufacturing prowess with its integral titanium handle. Amidst the contours of said handle are geometric lines set against skeletonized and anodized circular cutouts, with some premium finishing touches by way of anodized screws and pivot collar. A beefy 3.99″ M390 (59-61 HRC) clip point with a subtle compound grind flies out on caged ceramic ball bearings by way of a flipper tab or dual polished thumbstuds. The Ezinta comes in five versions: Black, Gun Metal, Grey with Blue Highlights (featured), Flamed Tiger Stripe, and a fully dressed up version in Hakkapell Damasteel and timascus. Today CIVIVI released the Biophase, a knife that boasts a futuristic sci-fi look while maintaining the company’s dependable everyday carry specs. Despite CIVIVI’s diverse range of designs over the years, the Biophase is unlike any other knife they’ve made, and reminds us a lot of their big brother WE Knife Co.’s iconic collaborations with the late designer Elijah Isham. With its skeletonized aluminum handle and button lock action, the Biophase offers a full-size folding knife experience without too much heft. The clip-point Nitro-V steel blade is no slouch either, with a Rockwell hardness between 58-60 and a strong belly and well-defined tip for maximum slicing and piercing performance. If you like an added touch of class, we prefer the Damascus steel and carbon fiber version of this knife, which looks the best overall. The lightening cuts in the blade match well with the organic look of the rest of the knife, and it’s a good option for those looking for something a bit different from the minimalist aesthetic that pocket knives tend to have these days.

I first caught wind of Chas Fisher’s tactical knife from MelissaBackwoods’s review, and by the time I finished that video, I knew the Covert would shoot right up my knife wishlist. But it’s here where I make it abundantly clear: the purpose of the Beckwith / Covert is not everyday carry, even though it is a knife—local laws permitting—you can EDC. It was built first and foremost with self-defense in mind, and I go into writing this with an express interest in its design, materials, and features.

It’s the details that really make this fixed blade stand out to me. The exactly 3” tanto blade is not only sized great for carry but it utilizes the most effective blade shape for its purpose. I was also pleasantly surprised to see it made of 1/8” thick AEB-L, a super-tough stainless steel I’m familiar with in flipping balisongs, which take some of the worst abuse when it comes to knife use. So if it’s good enough to be flipped constantly and take a dive into the pavement, then it will serve its main duties well. The edge terminates at a substantial finger guard, and the full tang goes through the G-10 handle and liners, ending at a pommel which completes a secure pocket that can accommodate and lock in any grip. Paired with the thumb ramp and jimping in the right places, this knife is well-designed to stay put in your hand.

But when it comes time to carry, Fisher Blades made some thoughtful decisions there too, not the least of which is a compact Kydex sheath that you can select for either left or right orientation. It comes with a deep carry clip that still leaves some of the handle out to prevent a fully concealed carry and give you the quickest possible access point should you need the knife in a hurry. It was even considered that the clip give the sheath a slight cant so it sits more comfortably in a front pocket carry and not digging into your hip while seated. The knife and sheath both weigh a surprisingly light 4.5 oz, making it an even more compelling carry option.

I want to reiterate again that the Beckwith / Covert is designed primarily for self-defense. This is even reflected in the contents of the knife packaging, which includes a complete user manual as well as a copy of the U.S. Constitution. But as someone who has been carrying fixed blades for a while, the idea of a highly focused, impeccably designed tool is something I just can’t help but appreciate.

When you take a look at folding knife offerings, your eyes might glaze over with the vast amount of boring handle options out there. The QSP Turtle shakes things up with three different colorful and exciting G-10 handle scales that add a touch of class while providing excellent grip on the blade. Aside from the great looks of the knife, you get a 3.5” modified tanto blade made of 14C28N stainless steel, itself with two finish options to match your preference of handle. The unique part of the blade is the reinforced tip, making it more rigid and well-suited for piercing through rough material.

CIVIVI has made a name for themselves among knife enthusiasts for producing high-quality knives that punch way above their price point, and that trend continues with the CIVIVI Cloud Peak. We don’t usually see a lot of classic outdoor fixed-blade knives from CIVIVI, which is a shame because they’ve done a great job with the Cloud Peak. The 4.6” blade is made from Nitro-V steel, which some would argue is the best material for outdoor tasks since it prioritizes durability, sharpness, and edge stability over edge retention. It’s easy to get the edge back even with a strop, so you don’t have to worry about dulling it with hard use. The G-10 handle is contoured and comfortable, with minimal texture making it easy to clean. When not in use, its leather sheath keeps it protected and secured on your belt for vertical carry.

Hot on the heels of the Kickstarted original Ankylo, a more affordable new version joins the ranks with a tough 154CM alternative to the blade steel over its crowdfunded ELMAX-equipped brother. You still get the same chunky 3.18″ reverse tanto profile and aluminum handles (in plain black or frag pattern green), with the unique pivot v-anchor lock holding the beast together. Caged ceramic ball bearings still give it its signature Vosteed fidgetable flick, and a now-reversible clip ensures an ambidextrous carry for all EDCers. Vosteed’s 2024 lineup has been a steady stream of successful slicers, and their latest release is already turning heads as it seeks to be the slimmest knife on the market. The Parallel is the latest design by Vosteed founder Yue Dong, a new crossbar lock design pushing the limits of their manufacturing prowess with some of the thinnest dimensions we’ve seen on a knife. For starters, the Parallel comes with a 2.9″ reverse tanto blade in robust 154CM steel, shaved down to a crazy thin 0.078” (2mm). This rides on caged ceramic ball bearings into an equally thin 0.279″ (7.10mm) titanium handle, which houses the minimal lock, backspacer, and reversible wire clip. As expected, the Parallel tips the scales at a mere 2.29 oz, making it an effortless EDC. The Vosteed Parallel is available now in three colorways for $129 at Vosteed’s site linked above.
