Kuoe’s Old Smith Watch Evolves with Contemporary Charm

Kuoe is a micro-brand watch manufacturer located in Kyoto, Japan. They specialize in making vintage-style automatic mechanical watches featuring reliable Japanese movements. Because of the vintage style, their watches tend to run small, but this year, they have updated their Old Smith watch to a more contemporary 39mm case diameter. The new Old Smith retains the “Dirty Dozen” classic British military style of the original, with bold Roman number markers and a railroad track to denote the minutes. What’s hard to see, even in Kuoe’s own product photos, is the unique paper-like dial on the watch.

Where the original used a Seiko NH35 movement inside, the new watch comes with a Seiko NH38. Either way, you get a reliable made-in-Japan automatic movement with hand-winding and hacking stop seconds. A screw-down crown helps the watch maintain 100-meter water resistance. New to this model is that it comes with a domed sapphire glass, which was optional in the original, and it comes with two pull-through straps to meet the new, larger, 20mm lug width.

The G-SHOCK line has repeatedly proven itself to be a watch that can easily handle the most demanding environments in the world. With the release of the Master of G RANGEMAN GPRH1000, G-SHOCK further elevates the line from being a rugged, reliable watch to a fully-featured exploration, analysis, and adventure tool.

Seek Adventure with Confidence

Whether you’re trekking in the mountains, running in the city, biking in the countryside, or swimming in the oceans, the RANGEMAN GPRH1000 has you covered using its six sensors and built-in GPS to measure and record your data. With its built-in GPS, you can measure your position, distance, and speed and track your route on a map. You can also view your location’s sunrise and sunset data, tide graph, and world time. The RANGEMAN GPRH1000 also has a compass that can help you navigate the terrain and a barometer that can alert you of changes in the weather.

The Toughest Fitness Tracker You’ll Ever Own

The RANGEMAN GPRH1000 supports nine activity modes, including trekking, running, biking, swimming, and gym workouts, ensuring no movement is wasted. With its optical sensor, you can measure your heart rate and blood oxygen level and adjust your pace and intensity accordingly. Using the CASIO Watches App to link the watch to your smartphone via Bluetooth, you can analyze your health metrics using algorithms from Polar, a company with a well-established reputation for heart rate-focused training analysis. These include all the necessary information that you’d want from a fitness tracker, including VO2 max calculations, cardio load, and calories burned. You can even link your data with apps like Strava and Apple Health to share your achievements with friends and fellow adventurers.

Withstand the Worst to Become the Best

The RANGEMAN GPRH1000 combines the convenient features of a smartwatch and fitness tracker with the tough, durable reputation of the G-SHOCK line. It’s designed to withstand shock, dust, mud, and water and is based on bio-based resins, which are environmentally friendly and durable. The case gets added protection from forged and stamped metal components that guard the GPS antenna and sensors inside. A forged metal button guard protects the main control button at the 9 o’clock position, while the case’s button shafts are equipped with gasket fittings to prevent mud and dust from getting in. Like the case, the band is also made of soft bio-based resin, ensuring a comfortable wrist fit. Large buttons with non-slip texture make them easy to operate and reliable even in wet environments.

The Power to Keep Going

The RANGEMAN GPRH1000 has a dual-charging system, so you’re never stuck without power. The time display is powered by solar charging, while the training functions and smart features rely on USB charging for juice. The digital display features a high-brightness full-auto LED backlight that makes the watch readable in the dark.

The G-SHOCK Features You Love

The RANGEMAN GPRH1000 comes with the standard G-SHOCK features and functions we’ve come to love and rely on. It has five alarms, one of which has a snooze function. It has countdown and interval timers, which are helpful for training, and a 1/100s stopwatch, which can measure up to 24 hours. It also has a world time function, which can display the time of 39 cities.

The Best of Both Worlds

Loaded with features that help you explore, analyze, and enjoy your outdoor activities beneath a shock-resistant, 200-meter water-resistant, eco-friendly bio-based resin case, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a watch that combines toughness and functionality the way the G-SHOCK RANGEMAN GPRH1000 does. If you’ve been looking for that one “do it all” watch that you can reliably wear daily with complete peace of mind, then look no further.

And if you’re not the adventuring type, sit back and daydream because the RANGEMAN can have notifications for incoming calls, e-mails, new social media posts, calendar notifications, and reminders, but we think you’d rather be out adventuring.

The post Ask EDC: Quartz or Automatic Watches? appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
One of the most divisive topics in watches and watch collecting is the eternal conflict between quartz and automatic movements—so divisive it caused an actual horological crisis in the ’70s and ’80s. It’s always interesting to talk about since, like every other aspect of everyday carry, it can be a personal choice when choosing one’s daily driver. As avid watch enthusiasts ourselves, we love seeing the discussion on the topic, and our recent posts on our social media channels have generated some excellent responses.

This prompted me to take the time to ask the team which side of the line they stood on and why. What type of watch does the Everyday Carry team wear, and what aspects of quartz or automatic led them to choose their main movement? I interviewed the members of the team who wore watches their thoughts, and our answers (and watches) are below.

This post was last updated on 12/29/2023.

Bernard Capulong, Editor-in-Chief

My everyday carry watch is a manual-winding mechanical dress watch: the Grand Seiko SBGW289. But when I need something I can knock around that’s still compact, thin, lightweight, comfortable, and accurate, I reach for my Casio A1000D-7EF, modded with a Casio AW700 bracelet. The pairing results in a sharp, all-stainless Casio with a clean, vintage-inspired presentation and a touch of color and lightplay thanks to the mother-of-pearl dial. This was a limited edition and Europe-only release, but the regular model is still available. It’s so slim, comfortable, and lightweight that I can throw it on without worry, even at the gym. My main gripe is its meager water resistance, but it’s an okay trade-off for the style and comfort for the money. Overall, I very much enjoy and appreciate mechanical watches and the art form of watchmaking—but through the lens of utilitarian carry, I think quartz movements certainly have their place.

Mikey Bautista, Managing Editor

When I’m not using my Apple Watch for workouts, my blackout G-SHOCK DW-6900BB-1 is my first option. I use a lot of timers, alarms, and world time for day-to-day activities and work/travel while also finding my arm getting caught in the elevator or banging up against a table from time to time. The G-SHOCK covers all my bases, is one of the toughest timepieces out there, keeps great time for years, and for under $100, it’s hard to beat the overall value.

Chris Van Hoven, Staff Writer

I usually like switching between quartz and automatic watches depending on what I’ll be doing during the day, but I’ve been gravitating lately towards my Oris Divers Sixty-Five “Bico” which uses a mix of bronze and stainless steel. “Bico” comes from “bi-color” because of the two-tone aesthetic. And while two-tone watches aren’t for everyone, I love how the bronze patinas over time into its unique pattern, and no two bronze watches will patina the same way.

Jon Tolentino, Graphic Designer

Apart from a fitness tracker to monitor my steps and swims, the watch I’ve gotten the most mileage out of is my Wenger Seaforce. It’s a robust Swiss-made diver with a reliable quartz movement from a company with a storied past, all at a reasonable price. With a stylish but subtly sporty design, it’s a watch I can—and do—take pretty much anywhere and everywhere.

Adam Molina, Senior Contributor

Whether I reach for a quartz watch or an automatic one in the morning depends on what kind of day I think I will have. A no-nonsense quartz beater is my go-to for vacations, hiking, or any kind of out-of-the-norm activity. For me, that’s the G-SHOCK 6900-PT1 (the baby blue collab that Hodinkee did with John Mayer). When I go to work, to the beach, or to hang out on the weekends, I go with my DOXA SUB 300T automatic watch. It was made for underwater adventures, so I never have to worry about it getting damaged when I’m doing dishes or giving my dog a bath.

Jonathan Tayag, Senior Contributor

Mechanical movements are like film cameras, inherently worse but fun. unless you’re wearing a Spring Drive. Here’s the thing, though: I’m not too fond of the sound of ticking quartz movements. And I also hate when the markers on a dial do not align exactly with the seconds hand on a watch. Mechanical/automatic movements get around that with a sweeping seconds movement. It’s hard for me to justify spending hundreds of dollars on a quartz watch when affordable G-SHOCKS exist, and they pretty much handle the practical accuracy requirement at that price point. When we start getting into buying timepieces as works of art, I would prefer the insides be mechanical as part of the deal. While I usually wear my Bulova A-15 Pilot because of its unique dial and elapsed time functions, when it comes down to it, I will opt for my G-SHOCK 5600 if I need to leave the house in a hurry.

Raine Masangya, Editorial Assistant

In addition to the vintage, versatile style that’s the reason I got the Casio A168 in the first place, being a digital quartz lets it wear thin and also be especially affordable.

Virnie Apal, Editorial Assistant

My favorite thing about this Citizen Q&Q H010 (other than the price) is the solar quartz movement, which can charge the battery without regular replacement. It’s simple, accurate, and practical for my day-to-day use.

The post G-SHOCK MUDMASTER GWGB1000-3A appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
As a longtime fan of the revered G-SHOCK line, I can’t think of any other watch I’d rather have on an excursion involving unpredictable weather or high-impact activities. But even among the G-SHOCK family, there’s a distinction to be made between getting down and dirty and getting down and dirty. When the situation calls for taking toughness to the next level, the MUDMASTER collection steps in, with the G-SHOCK GWGB1000-3A as the family’s newest member.

The GWGB1000-3A is part of the Master of G line, a collection of G-SHOCK watches tailored for specific professions and activities. The MUDMASTER series, as the name suggests, is made for people who work or play in muddy and sandy conditions, such as rescue teams, rangers, and off-road drivers. The secret to the MUDMASTER’s extra level of toughness lies in how the 58.7mm case is constructed, giving it a unique structure that sets it apart from other G-SHOCK watches. Stainless steel protector parts are strategically placed at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. These parts are specially treated with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating to enhance their resistance against abrasions. To achieve their intricate shapes, the parts are meticulously crafted by forging and cutting metal components, while a different technique called metal injection molding creates the complex molded form of the front button guard. Carbon-fiber reinforced resin parts are also used at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions to protect the side buttons.

When paired with its durable carbon fiber-reinforced resin case, the MUDMASTER becomes a timepiece that truly stands out, offering unbeatable strength and exceptional longevity. However, it’s not all about being the toughest watch on the block. The MUDMASTER aligns with its eco-friendly values by incorporating bio-based resins in its case, bezel, and band, emphasizing G-SHOCK’s dedication to sustainability.

As the flagship model of the MUDMASTER series, the GWGB1000-3A boasts an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a 3-hand analog dial with LCD, and a super illuminator double LED for high visibility. Triple sensors that measure compass bearing, altitude/barometric pressure, and temperature can help you navigate and monitor your surroundings and alert you of any changes in the weather. The watch also has a solar-powered battery that can be charged by light and a unique power-saving model, ensuring power efficiency. If you’re traveling to a different time zone, the watch reads radio frequencies from up to six stations worldwide and automatically adjusts to keep it accurate.

Bluetooth Smartphone connectivity is another notable feature of the GWGB1000-3A. Pairing the watch with your smartphone via the CASIO Watches app offers additional useful functions and setting options. You can use the Location Indicator function to point the intuitive indicator hand at 3 o’clock toward a location you’ve recorded on the map within the app. This function can help you find your way back to a specific point, such as your campsite or car, even in challenging conditions like sandstorms or dense fog. You can also use the Mission Log function to record your activity history, such as your walking route and altitude data.

The GWGB1000-3A’s green color scheme matches the theme of the MUDMASTER series, with a multi-dimensional design that gives it a powerful and rugged look, but it is also offered in two other colorways, black and burgundy.

Combining toughness and technology, the G-SHOCK GWGB1000-3A is a natural evolution to the G-SHOCK Master of G line, capable of handling any punishment you throw at it while relaying useful information whenever needed. Grab yours at the link below.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you look at the wrists of many modern everyday carry watch enthusiasts, you’ll notice that the panda dial chronograph has found itself in a resurging trend. A panda dial consists of a white or silver dial on a watch with dark black subdials for the chronograph complication. The contrast between light and dark looks similar to the face of a panda, lending the look its name. And while the panda dial has become popular in the everyday carry watch community because of unattainable watches that will cost you a second mortgage, the Timex Marlin Chronograph Tachymeter lets you get the look for far less and continues the brand’s consistency for strong releases and collaborations this year.

The Timex Marlin Chronograph Tachymeter has an Art Deco look that holds its own, so while it’s reminiscent of luxury watches, it’s not a copy or a homage. The striking typeface used for the Arabic hour markers at the 12, 3, and 9 o’clock positions are unique, and they are easily identifiable at a glance thanks to the application of high-contrast black rectangular highlights around them. The same goes for the black subdials, making it easy to read the chronograph complication without too much effort. The black outer tachymeter helps give the watch its name, letting you calculate speeds quickly.

With a case diameter of 40mm and a lug width of 20mm, this watch will work on most people’s wrists. Its compatibility with a wide range of straps makes it versatile, from dress to casual wear based on your mood. Its reliable quartz movement will keep time better than some of the most expensive mechanical and automatic watches at a fraction of the cost.

What we like: The classic Art Deco look and reliable quartz design of the Timex Marlin Chronograph offer excellent functionality and value for money.

What to watch out for: With a water resistance of only 50m, you should take this watch off before taking your next plunge into the pool or the ocean.

Final verdict: The Timex Marlin Chronograph is an elevated quartz timepiece that gives you a classic look without bidding for a classic watch at auction. Even better, you can buy one today online. That’s better than being made to wait years on an exclusive list just for the chance to buy something you can’t afford.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Opting for an automatic mechanical watch involves having movements with lots of gears, springs, rotors, and other pieces to work. Where a standard quartz movement condenses all that into a circuit board, part of the allure of having an automatic watch is the mechanism itself, but that mechanism requires a slightly bigger watch, and that bigger size impacts the overall weight. But watches like the new Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic keep the weight down by using the namesake titanium material instead.

The bead-blasted titanium case allows the 41mm diameter Expedition North to have a heft that wears smaller than its size. In its larger form, however, you get 200 meters of water resistance, which is a lot for a field watch. The larger space also enables more shock resistance for the Japanese automatic movement inside, powering the highly-legible three-hand watch. The dial features Arabic legends, with a Timex Expedition logo at the top. There’s a date window at the 3 o’clock position for your convenience. The hands are big and bright in regular light, and in the dark, the hours, hands, and markers feature Swiss Super-LumiNova lume to make it readable in low-light situations. An exhibition caseback is the final stylish flair to the watch, letting you take a peek into its automatic engine.

What we like: The handsome recycled ocean plastic strap is sustainable for the environment, and it also features easy removal from the 20mm lugs for swapping it out with other straps based on your style and mood.

What to watch out for: Traditional watch enthusiasts tend to have a problem with titanium watches. To them, the lightness is indicative of poor quality and a cheap feeling. But in everyday carry, we know that finding the best materials is part of finding the best tools to do the job, and a titanium watch like the Timex Expedition North Automatic allows for serious weight savings and overall comfort on your wrist.

Final verdict: The Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic 41mm is a highly easy-to-read field watch featuring a lightweight titanium case, a quality Japanese automatic movement, and a sapphire glass crystal at an attainable price.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Bulova has been making everyday carry timepieces and watches for decades, but their recent creations have marked a turn towards what EDC and watch enthusiasts have in mind. Gone are the big and bulky watches with garish colors, and in are watches like their new Oceanographer GMT. These vintage-inspired automatic mechanical movement watches are a sight to behold, and they’re a lot easier to find than looking at the used market for a watch that’s older than you.

The Bulova Oceanographer GMT is a variant of their “Devil Diver” automatic watch. It’s rated waterproof down to 666 feet, about 200 meters. I submit that it’s devilishly beautiful. It’s available in classic diver watch motifs, including the classic red/blue “Pepsi” design, a black/brown and rose gold-tone, and a vintage, yet sporty, off-white cream gunmetal release with a lume dial.

The stand-out feature of this watch is the GMT complication, which lets you use the GMT hand in conjunction with the rotating outer bezel to keep track of a different time zone and elapsed time at a glance. It takes some getting used to, but once you master the function, it’s faster to read the time than to ask Siri or Google what time it is back home when you’re on vacation, if you even have internet access in the first place.

What we like: With its vintage-inspired look and 666 feet of water resistance, the Bulova Oceanographer GMT brings a lot of performance and class to the table in a package that doesn’t require you to play the lottery or sit on a waitlist to wear.

What to watch out for: The 41mm case width is something to keep in mind if you have thinner wrists, but as a diver-style watch, it’s in line with expectations.

Final verdict: With its classic styling, quality Japanese Miyota 9075 movement, and beautiful waterproof case, there aren’t many things not to like about the Bulova Oceanographer GMT.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Timex has been killing it lately with fantastic collabs with everyone from Todd Snyder to Hodinkee to even the UFC, but it’s their team-ups with The James Brand that have caught my attention the most, especially last year’s titanium Expedition North. And while I appreciate a good titanium bit of gear, their latest collaboration brings it back to 80s retro fun with a new eye-catching Ironman.

It’s a pleasant surprise in both the model selection and its colorway. The two brands opted for the classic Ironman digital sport watch, a line with nearly four decades of history behind it since its release in 1986. Bold color blocking by way of an electric yellow on the 39mm resin case, bright red pushers, and an upcycled teal fabric strap made in partnership with #tide makes a statement on the wrist, playing up the retro vibes without overdoing the look.

True to Ironman form, the watch comes with performance features you would expect from a triathlon-ready timepiece, including a stopwatch with 30 laps of memory, a chronograph, daily alarm, 100 meters of water resistance, and, of course, Timex’s signature Indiglo backlit display. Double lugs hold the colorful strap in place, and underneath, a caseback commemorating the collaboration.

What we like: Timex and The James Brand watch puts a retro spin on a timeless (pun intended) performance watch that’s playful on the wrist while still being capable on the move, and is an unexpectedly refreshing 180 from their last collaboration.

What to watch out for: The collab is actually a capsule collection that also includes a James Brand Redstone knife and Velcro wallet, both in the same retro colors.

Final verdict: We’re leaving the smartwatch at home and running for the 80s.

Take one look at the Withings Steel HR Sport and it’s clear it’s not like other fitness trackers. It sports a more traditional analog look for telling time with its two hands and 12-hour markers while still displaying useful fitness information on its two subdials. The topmost subdial is actually an embedded digital screen for displaying heart rate, phone notifications, and more. The bottom subdial tracks goal progress throughout the day. Syncing the watch to an Android or iOS smartphone gives you access to a suite of useful activity tracking, including calories burned, distance, VO2 Max estimations, and sleep quality in addition to the aforementioned heart rate. In addition to being a solid workout companion, the Steel HR Sport is great to travel with thanks to its no-fuss, auto-adjusting hands that sync with different timezones as you travel.

To stand up to rigorous workouts and wear and tear of EDC alike, the watch boasts its namesake stainless steel case, double domed mineral crystal, and 50 meters of water resistance (good for dips, swims, and splashes). Its rechargeable battery lasts for 25 days between full charges, conveniently eliminating the need to plug it in every night. Check it out at the link below.

The post Ridge Titanium Field Watch appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
Last year, Ridge launched their first foray into the world of watches with the Ridge Land & Sea GMT Watch. It combined the best elements of a dive watch with the added benefits of a dedicated GMT dual-time watch. It was an excellent showcase of EDC versatility, which we’ve come to expect from all of Ridge’s offerings.

This time, Ridge takes a page from their award-winning Ridge Wallet by focusing on their core minimalist philosophy and applying it to their new watch release: the Ridge Titanium Field Watch.

Initially developed to serve military personnel in the field during battle, a field watch only has one objective: to allow its wearer to tell time quickly and reliably. To achieve this, a field watch must possess three main characteristics: accuracy, durability, and legibility. Time to check and see if the Ridge Titanium Field Watch ticks all the boxes.

Making a Case for Titanium

Bucking the trend of run-of-the-mill stainless steel cases found on most watches, the Titanium Field Watch’s 40mm case boasts premium Grade 2 titanium. It’s a much-loved material among EDC enthusiasts because of its corrosion resistance, hypoallergenic properties, and light weight, with titanium weighing 30% less than stainless steel. As a result, the watch on its rubber strap weighs only 69 grams or just under 2.5 oz.

Combined with the case’s well-proportioned dimensions of 47mm lug to lug, a slim case thickness of 11.5mm, and 20mm lug width, the watch feels extremely comfortable to wear, offering a more nimble presence on the wrist instead of the heft that a stainless steel watch brings.

The Titanium Field Watch’s titanium case also features a mix of polished and brushed surfaces, which play beautifully against the light to bring out the angularity of the case design details. And when compared to stainless steel, titanium presents a darker tone that is better at camouflaging scratches.

It achieves a 200-meter water resistance rating, exceptionally rare for field watches that typically possess water resistance ratings of 50-100 meters. This water resistance is accomplished by a screw-down crown and caseback, ensuring a tight seal and preventing water from entering the case. This makes the Titanium Field Watch suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and even diving.

Premium Performance Inside

The Ridge Titanium Field Watch marks the brand’s expansion into mechanical timepieces. It’s powered by a self-winding Miyota 9039 automatic movement, which harnesses energy through the motion of your wrist. This means that instead of relying on batteries like a quartz movement, the watch can run indefinitely if worn daily, so you don’t have to worry about the watch suddenly stopping without warning.

This isn’t just any automatic movement, either. The Miyota 9039 is an ultra-thin, Japanese-made, premium mechanical movement rated with an accuracy of -10 to +30 seconds daily with 42 hours of power reserve.

It notably boasts a beat frequency of 28800 vibrations per hour (vph), ticking at 4 Hz, or eight beats per second, matching the movements found in many luxury watches. This gives the movement improved accuracy and an exceptionally smooth sweep of the seconds hand, especially compared to other automatic watches in this price tier, which typically feature movements with a slower frequency of 21600 vph or 3 Hz.

This Miyota 9039 also features hand-winding and hacking capabilities present in more upscale watches. If the watch has stopped (usually from being in storage), you can start it running again by simply winding the crown. Hacking, on the other hand, stops the second hand from moving when you pull the crown out to adjust the time, so you can set it with precision while synchronizing it to any other watch or clock.

Dialed In Legibility

The dial and exhibition caseback are protected by AR-coated sapphire crystals, the second hardest material on Earth next to diamonds, making the display virtually scratch-proof. Not only is this a premium material found on high-end watches, but its enhanced clarity further adds to the legibility needed on a field watch.

The dial is available in five high-contrast color combinations that match Ridge’s other popular everyday carry gear: Matte Olive, Royal Black, Alpine Navy, Basecamp Orange, and Carbon Fiber 3K.

The different dials feature an attractive textured design, with large, highly visible even numerals, hour markers, and polished stainless steel hands equipped with Swiss Super-LumiNova for easy readability, even in pitch-black environments. A minute track with 24-hour markers on the outer rim to easily tell military time is a nod to classic field watch military heritage.

Two Is One, One Is None

Each watch comes with two strap options in different materials to complement the dial color. All watches come with a matching Fluoro Rubber strap and either a genuine leather or nylon strap, allowing you to customize it to your style.

The straps feature quick-release pins that make it easy to swap straps without any tools, letting you change your watch’s look and feel in seconds. The signed strap buckles are also crafted from titanium to match the case, which is an excellent attention to detail.

A Winning Combination

The Matte Olive, Royal Black, Alpine Navy, and Basecamp Orange color options are priced at $275, while the Carbon Fiber 3K can be had for $375 due to its unique carbon fiber dial and black PVD-coated titanium case.

The Ridge Titanium Field Watch takes the legacy style of the classic field watch worn by soldiers, explorers, and adventurers for decades, elevating it with modern features and a careful choice of materials that make it more durable, versatile, and elegant.

Whether it’s used for hiking in the mountains, diving in the ocean, or working in the office, the Ridge Titanium Field Watch is an excellent choice for those looking for their first automatic watch thanks to its affordable price; or anyone looking for a reliable everyday timepiece that will serve them for years to come, thanks to Ridge’s lifetime guarantee. Choose a color (or two) that suits your style, and grab yours from the link below.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you picture a Timex watch in your head, the ubiquitous Weekender and Explorer quartz field watches likely come to mind. But with a century of watchmaking experience under their belts, the folks at Timex regularly go above and beyond with new designs. For example, there’s the new S2 Automatic Watch from Timex’s design bureau in Switzerland. The Giorgio Galli S2 features a namesake minimalist design by Timex’s design director. The 38mm injection-molded 316L stainless steel case has a unique skeleton design that reduces weight and gives it a stunning look from the side.

The back of the watch features a combination of inserted titanium and a sapphire glass exhibition case. That see-through case back shows off another giant leap the S2 takes in the Timex line: this is the first watch from Timex featuring a precision Swiss Sellita movement. The caliber SW200-1 is an automatic self-winding mechanical watch movement with 26 jewels and a 41-hour power reserve.

It all comes together with the minimal and dressy face of the watch, with an enamel dial and low-profile stainless steel hour markers capped with a domed sapphire glass crystal with anti-glare coating. Out of the box, the watch comes with a comfortable NBR synthetic rubber strap with a stainless steel clasp. You can swap it out quickly with the right tools. Other details of note include 50M of water resistance and a strap and lug width of 18mm.

What we like: The Giorgio Galli S2 features an excellent and elegant minimalist design with the added benefit of a Swiss-made movement ticking inside. The smaller case size may also appeal to those looking for a more compact wear.

What to watch out for: While you won’t have to change out the batteries on this watch (there are none), if this is your first time with an automatic movement, it might be challenging to understand why the watch stops ticking if you stop wearing it after a while. The price is also relatively steep compared to many more popular EDC recommendations. Still, the sum of its parts and its utterly unique design and pedigree could make it a much better value prop for those who can afford it.

Final verdict: If you’re in the market for a classy EDC minimalist dress watch with Swiss automatic chops and a remarkable aesthetic to boot, the Timex Giorgio Galli S2 is right up your alley.

Orient’s diver style watches offer great value for money, with a stylish design that doesn’t skimp on build quality while also featuring movements that give you the features you expect from higher-priced alternatives. Their Kamasu features an in-house F6022 automatic mechanical movement featuring a day-date complication and a hacking capability. You can hand-wind it to maximize its runtime or let it ride on your wrist daily to keep it going.

While Orient doesn’t explicitly bill this watch as rated for deep diving, it is water-resistant to 200 meters, and it’s well-suited for EDCers who want the style of a diver’s watch but don’t necessarily ever go down to depth. Its sapphire crystal will also keep up with the scraps and scrapes of life above board, and its 41.8mm case diameter makes it an excellent choice for most wrists.

It’s been 30+ years since the original G-SHOCK DW-5000C was released back in 1983. While many things have changed since then, a lot has remained the same—don’t fix what isn’t broken, after all. And that’s exactly the case with the G-SHOCK GW-M5610-1ER. While it has been modernized to meet today’s standards, it preserves the DNA of the original, since only watches modeled after it can use the 5600 designation. The modern 5610 starts off with a shock-resistant case made out of resin, to protect against impact and vibration. Like its predecessor, this is a squared case, measuring 46.7 x 43.2mm.

For its functions, you’ll find the now-standard stopwatch, timer, daily alarms, world time, calendar, and even a radio signal receptor in this GW-M model, all powered by a solar cell. Another unique feature is its full-auto illumination, which activates it when it’s in low-light conditions and deactivates the backlight there’s enough surrounding light. Finally, 200 meters of water resistance seal the deal with this durable timepiece. Pick one up this modern classic at the link below.

It could be argued that the G-SHOCK MUDMAN is the ultimate representation of Kikuo Ibe’s vision of what a G-SHOCK should be. First introduced in 1985, the G-SHOCK MUDMAN DW-5500C showcased innovations that would shape the G-SHOCK line for years to come. It was the first to introduce a mud and dust-resistant structure designed to prevent dirt and mud from getting into the watch and damaging the internals.

The latest evolution of the MUDMAN series, the G-SHOCK GW9500, encapsulates the absolute toughness of the G-SHOCK line while adding features that further enhance its usability in extreme conditions. It’s inspired by professional gear built to perform in the harshest environments. From rescue missions to wilderness survival, the GW9500’s solid, rugged design delivers strength, slimness, and ease of use.

The highlight of the MUDMAN line has always been its mud-resistant construction, which the new MUDMAN GW9500 enhances. Cylindrical stainless-steel parts protect the front button and three direct sensor buttons, and feature oversized, easy-to-operate pushers that keep mud and water out. Even the button shafts come equipped with gasket fittings that prevent contamination with dirt and dust. The case, bezel, and band are made from bio-based resins produced using renewable organic resources such as castor oil plants and corn. This material helps reduce environmental impact without sacrificing durability or comfort.

At the heart of the G-SHOCK MUDMAN GW9500 is its Triple Sensor, which senses natural environmental changes in magnetism (for compass bearing), atmospheric pressure (for altitude and barometric pressure readings), and temperature. These functions allow you to plan your activities ahead of time and will warn you when sudden weather changes are predicted to occur. The MUDMAN GW9500’s Multi-band 6 system receives radio signals from six stations worldwide (two in Japan, China, the USA, the UK, and Germany) to adjust the time automatically, ensuring accurate timekeeping wherever you are.

To minimize bulk from previous iterations, its bezel height was reduced by cutting the glass and employing a new glass adhesion method without sacrificing the Carbon Core Guard’s high rigidity and durability. The case measures just 14.8 mm, making it just 3 mm shy of the thinnest G-SHOCKs on the market. All this while incorporating Triple Sensor technology and a duplex LCD (dual-layer LCD), which is an incredible engineering feat no matter how you look at it. This is the first time the duplex LCD has been used in the G-SHOCK. The LCD’s dual layers enhance the digital compass’s readability, which is helpful during survival situations in unpredictable weather. The top layer shows compass graphics, while the bottom layer offers a large display of the time and various measurements.

Two of the three variants, the GW9500-3 and the GW9500-1A4, utilize a negative LCD, which also marks the first time a G-SHOCK brand uses a negative LCD with a dual-layer construction. The screen’s legibility in the dark won’t be a problem thanks to its Super Illuminator function that provides a high-brightness full auto LED backlight for the LCD, activated by tilting your wrist or pressing a button.

Naturally, the G-SHOCK MUDMAN GW9500 includes all the functions that make the G-SHOCK line great, including shock resistance, 200-meter water resistance, Tough Solar charging, world time for 48 cities, a 1/10-second stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms, and sunrise/sunset times. With features that suit its purpose as a tough, dependable, and useful timepiece in any situation, the G-SHOCK MUDMAN GW9500 is an environment-proof outdoors watch that delivers on its promises of durability and strength.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The classic field watch is arguably one of the most versatile watches you can have on your wrist. Inspired by the A-11 military standard that defined the field watch during World War II, the Redwood Field v3 solar watch takes it up a notch by combining historical heritage, rugged durability, and modern technology in one package.

The A-11 military standard was established in the 1940s to provide detailed specifications for a field watch that could withstand the harsh conditions of war. The A-11 watch was issued to the USAAF and later to infantry and ground forces. It had a simple and legible dial, a reliable manual-wound movement, a waterproof and dustproof case, and a stop-seconds function to synchronize time with the commanding officer.

The Redwood Field v3 watch pays homage to the A-11 watch, also known as “the watch that won the war,” by retaining its essential features and design elements. However, it also improves upon it by using modern materials, dimensions, and technology.

The Redwood Field v3 watch case is made of stainless steel with a brushed finish. It has a modern diameter of 40mm, larger than the original A-11 watches, which were around 32-33mm. The case has massive drilled lugs for easy strap changing. The case also has an oversized screw-down crown for easy operation and water resistance. The crystal of the Redwood Field v3 watch is made of sapphire, which is one of the hardest materials available. It’s flat and 1.5mm thick, minimizing scratches and withstandstanding water pressure. It is also mounted with special seals to ensure water tightness.

The Redwood Field v3 watch has a 100M/330ft water resistance rating, suitable for swimming and snorkeling. This is achieved by using a screw-down crown and caseback, together with high-quality seals.

Powering the Redwood Field v3 watch is a solar-powered movement, so it doesn’t require any batteries or external power sources. It can run for up to six months on a single charge from sunlight or artificial light. Each available dial of the Redwood Field v3 watch (black, white, stealth, and olive) is high-contrast and minimalist, with large numerals and markers for easy reading. They’re coated with Super-LumiNova pigments that glow in the dark for low-light visibility.

All Redwood Field v3 watches come with a heritage-inspired watch roll that can hold up to six watches. The roll is made of olive drab cotton canvas with leather trim inspired by the M42 field jacket, making it a secure and convenient way to store and carry your watches.

What we like: It’s a tribute to the history and legacy of the A-11 watch but also a reflection of the innovation and craftsmanship of Redwood.

What to watch out for: A 40mm diameter case might be too big for some wrists, but the clean bezel lets it wear slightly smaller than the advertised size.

Final verdict: The Redwood Field v3 should be on your shortlist if you’re looking for a simple, no frills field watch with a highly legible dial and versatile styling.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Knowing the exact time zone of your destination is essential to getting the most use out of an EDC watch that features a GMT hand. That’s because that watch complication requires you to set a specific offset from your current time for you to be able to tell the time in a different place. But let’s face it: you might have difficulty figuring that out unless you’ve memorized a table of time zones. In days old, watches used to spell out cities and places on a watch’s outer bezel. And the Timex World Time 1972 Reissue does that: letting you figure out your time relative to where you’re going without knowing the specifics.

As its name implies, the World Time involves Timex going back through decades of experience making quality everyday carry watches and bringing past designs into the 21st century. The stainless steel and black trim bezel and dial make for a 70s aesthetic. And unlike many watches that try the retro theme, this Timex watch ditches the trendy integrated link metal bracelet. Instead, you get a quick change leather watch band and the ability to use standard 20mm lugs and bands of your choice.

The 39mm case diameter also makes for a retro look without being so small that it looks out of place for today’s fashions. The modern quartz movement inside will keep time better than most automatic watches could and at a fraction of the cost, which is particularly useful when you need to keep accurate time in multiple timezones. With the outer bezel, you can set your current location and then discern the time in other places by looking at the outer ring. The watch is highly-legible, with a bright red seconds hand and lume on the hour and minute hands and the outer markers. A date window at the 3 o’clock position completes the look.

What we like: This retro reissue watch from Timex is as stylish as it is convenient. It’s a great starter watch if you’re looking for a way to see the time in other places without knowing precisely the actual time zone differential.

What to watch out for: This watch only has 50 meters of water resistance. While that’s sufficient for most everyday splashes, you should avoid wearing this watch for an extended dip into the pool just to be safe.

Final verdict: This watch’s beautiful look is timeless even if you don’t use the outer bezel’s world time function. With its retro looks and styling matched with the modern internals and reliability of its quartz movement, the Timex World Time 1972 Reissue is an excellent choice for an everyday carry wristwatch.
