The Brown Buffalo X Huckberry Collab to Release a Stealthy Style Trio

In their first collaboration in 2022, Huckberry and The Brown Buffalo teamed up to produce a limited Huckberry edition of The Brown Buffalo’s flagship backpack, the iconic Concealpack (a favorite of ours), that sold out in hours. Now, they’re back with a trio of exclusive limited-edition releases: an upgraded Concealpack, a Porterpen Case, and a Dopp Kit, all in an exclusive MultiCam Black colorway, making a uniquely styled, well-rounded collection of highly functional and durable organizational solutions for the everyday carry enthusiast.

Leading the pack, the upgraded Concealpack Everyday Backpack 21L is meticulously crafted from high-performing DWR-coated X50 X-Pac with a 500D CORDURA face fabric. Its lining is DWR-coated VX21 X-Pac, and boasts reinforced critical points featuring Berry-compliant bar tacks to better safeguard your essentials during transit and in cases of drops. It maintains an ample 21L storage compartment, a secure, padded laptop compartment, and plenty of pockets for organization, easily accessible through the full clamshell opening design. The Porterpen Case and the Dopp Kit are also crafted from the same material as the Concealpack. The Porterpen Case boasts a 1L capacity, offering a compact yet robust solution for safeguarding writing materials and other small essentials, and the Dopp Kit comes with a 3L capacity, perfect for keeping your toiletries and other related materials protected and organized, perfectly rounding out the collection.

Each of these pieces represents the uncompromising quality and thoughtful design of these brands, offering functionality and durability without compromising on style, and when used together, they make a cohesive ensemble that ensures efficient organization.

In this roundup, we highlight a versatile range of tools and accessories designed to elevate your outdoor adventures and everyday life.

Aer’s Tech Trio: A Sling, a Pack, and a Packable Powerhouse

Aer updated its Tech line this month with the third edition of its X-Pac sling briefcase. The new Tech Sling 3 features a lightweight, waterproof VX-42 sailcloth made in the United States by Dimension-Polyant. You can keep a professional look wherever you go, and the removable padded sling strap makes this a very versatile laptop bag for your everyday carry. The sailcloth construction means that the Aer Tech Sling 3 weighs just 1.2 lbs in total, and that’s while giving you a full nine liters of space and enough padding to keep your 14” laptop or tablet safe. There’s tons of other organizational space inside the bag, which is also colored bright orange to help you quickly identify the gear you’ve packed inside.

If you need slightly more space than the Tech Sling 3 can provide, Aer also released the newly updated Day Pack 3 and Tech Pack 3 in X-Pac sailcloth. They’re also great options if you prefer the comfort and stability of an everyday carry backpack. Both backpacks also help you maximize cabin space as they are within TSA compliance and compatible with carry-on size limits on most airlines worldwide.

The Day Pack 3 is 17.25″ tall and weighs 2.7 lbs, providing 14L of space inside. The dual-compartment design lets you separate your gear and tech essentials, keeping things tidy inside with the dedicated organizational space. There’s room for up to a 16″ desktop replacement laptop inside the padded laptop sleeve, and the hidden AirTag tracker pouch gives you peace of mind as you travel. For quick access items, the top waterproof YKK zippered compartment has enough space to hold sunglasses, cell phone, and passport inside. While the minimalist look of the back looks very streamlined, the bag retains the side water bottle compartment to help you stay hydrated as you go about your daily business.

The slightly larger 16L of space afforded by the updated Aer Tech Pack 3 in X-Pac lets you maximize your loadout without adding too much bulk. At 3.0 lbs, this is the heaviest bag in the new lineup, but that’s still at least two pounds lighter than the standard ballistic nylon laptop bag before you add your gear into the mix. Unlike those other bags, the Tech Pack 3 has a structured design that holds its shape even when you don’t fill it with gear, clothing, and other essentials. At 18″ tall, it’s slightly more prominent on your back than the Aer Day Pack 3, but not by much, and the luggage passthrough at the rear means you can cart it around an airport terminal or train station easily with any roller bag you pack alongside.

Kuoe’s Old Smith Watch Evolves with Contemporary Charm

Kuoe is a micro-brand watch manufacturer located in Kyoto, Japan. They specialize in making vintage-style automatic mechanical watches featuring reliable Japanese movements. Because of the vintage style, their watches tend to run small, but this year, they have updated their Old Smith watch to a more contemporary 39mm case diameter. The new Old Smith retains the “Dirty Dozen” classic British military style of the original, with bold Roman number markers and a railroad track to denote the minutes.  What’s hard to see, even in Kuoe’s own product photos, is the unique paper-like dial on the watch.

Where the original used a Seiko NH35 movement inside, the new watch comes with a Seiko NH38. Either way, you get a reliable made-in-Japan automatic movement with hand-winding and hacking stop seconds. A screw-down crown helps the watch maintain 100-meter water resistance. New to this model is that it comes with a domed sapphire glass, which was optional in the original, and it comes with two pull-through straps to meet the new, larger, 20mm lug width.

Prometheus’s Beta QRv3 Flashlight Returns with Upgraded Brilliance

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 10 years since we reviewed Prometheus’s premiere AAA flashlight, but this year, the Beta shines bright once again. Now on its third iteration since its original Kickstarter launch in 2013, it keeps its key functionality—namely, its twisty activation and quick-release tail system—while tweaking its design and upgrading its output to modern enthusiast sensibilities.

The QRv3’s main titanium body design maintains the signature Prometheus ridges, with the option for a classic or “ICE” design for the head, the latter of which includes a more aggressive knurled pattern. And speaking of the head, it now contains the latest and greatest Nichia 519A 9080 (4000K) LED with 90+ CRI, an incredibly pleasing tint that still has enough power for up to 90 lumens in up to three modes and is powered by an included AAA NiMH rechargeable battery. Last but not least, the Beta QRv3’s quick-release tail not only comes with your option for a clip instead of a split ring attachment but the current version also got re-tooled to be usable as a light work 1/4” bit driver.

The new Beta is on a monthly drop schedule and goes fast, so sign up for notifications and keep an eye on the Prometheus site for updates regarding releases to have the chance to grab your own.

Tactile Turn Scales New Heights With Their Seasonal Release Pen, the Icefall

Tactile Turn’s latest seasonal release pen is the Icefall, named after the Khumbu Icefall on the route to the top of Mount Everest. Functionally, the Icefall indicates Tactile’s increasing mastery of using Cerakote to add a unique visual look to their precision-machined pens. On the Icefall, Tactile has added an ice-like design using Cerakote to their metal Side Click pens. There’s also an optional titanium Damascus pen clip if the ice-blue Cerakoted clip doesn’t do it for you. Functionally, the Cerakote finish adds additional durability and scratch resistance to the Side Click pen, which you can enjoy along with the satisfying clicky mechanism and reliable pen refill used inside.

The best part about the Icefall is that, like Tactile Turn’s other seasonal releases, you only have a limited amount of time to order it. All you have to do is order the Icefall anytime on Tactile Turn’s website before March 28. This approach is an excellent change of pace with the increasing hype around limited releases lately, and it ensures that everyone who wants an Icefall can get one. Whether rounding out a completionist set of Tactile Turn’s seasonal releases or picking this up as your first, the Icefall is a great pen to add to your everyday carry.

On the more conventional side of everyday carry is the AroundHank, an update to an original handkerchief design and, in true aroundsquare fashion, comes with exceptional attention to detail with its construction, including a 50gsm weight with double knit construction with a custom printed pattern.

Other notable inclusions in the drop include ebony wood MKUltras and Chetki wearables, exotic zircuti Knucklebones, and glow-in-the-dark POM (Polyoxymethylene, commonly branded as Delrin) Deadeye coins/worry stones. See the full collection in the drop video above and at the link below.

Nitecore’s Latest EDC35 Flashlight Brightens Every Adventure with 5,000 Lumens

As our pick to win Best Flashlight at SHOT Show 2024, the EDC35 is a tactical pocket powerhouse. It shares a lot of characteristics with its smaller brother the EDC33, including custom knurling on the body, a physical lockout switch, and a rotating tail that hides a USB-C charging port for its built-in 6,000mAh battery.

The big difference is with the larger head, which uses an upgraded NiteLab UHi 40 MAX LED from the UHi 20 in the EDC33 that lets it output a more significant 5,000 lumens up to 601 yards on max output, which includes its trademark “Lumin Shield” burst mode. At under 5” and a still-pocketable 6.28 oz, the EDC35 is the perfect upgrade pair to the EDC33 and still a great pick in the 2024 rectangular flashlight meta.

CRKT’s Michaca Automatic Knife Is A Cut Above the Rest

The Michaca is CRKT’s brand-new automatic knife designed by expert knifemaker Phillip Booth. The name Michaca is a combination of Phillip’s hometown of Ithaca and his home state, Michigan. It sports a 3.30” drop point blade made from CPM MagnaCut steel with a bead blast finish, while the natural G10 handle offers excellent grip and features Booth’s signature stripe.

To release the knife, there isn’t a button or switch. Instead, it uses the scales as a release. But not your typical scale release where you push it up by its pivot, the Michaca actuates by the tail end of the knife. You can slide the scale forward using your fingers or the pad of your palm, and it will automatically deploy the blade. It also comes with a generous deep carry pocket clip, and overall, we think this is a new fun auto to add to your collection.

Flashlights, pocket knives, and robust organization take center stage in this week’s roundup.

IMALENT MS32, the New World’s Brightest Flashlight

In the ever-evolving landscape of high-performance flashlights, IMALENT has again pushed the boundaries by introducing its latest powerhouse, the MS32. The IMALENT MS32 is designed for those who demand the absolute pinnacle of flashlight tech, literally blasting onto the scene with jaw-dropping 200,000 lumens, making it the brightest flashlight in the world. And yes, we’ve covered some seriously powerful flashlights before, like IMALENT’s former champ, the MS18, which packed a whopping 100,000 lumens, but the MS32 literally outperforms it twice over. 32 Cree XHP70.2 LEDs power this beast, which has a beam distance of 1,618m with an intensity of 655,000cd and comes in an IP56 waterproof body built from durable aluminum alloy with a handle for comfortable carry.

It’s not just about the raw power, though. IMALENT equips the MS32 with an OLED display that informs you about battery life, modes, and temperature. There are eight modes to choose from, including an eco-friendly Low and main event Turbo mode, letting you tailor the light to your needs. To tame the intense heat the light generates, IMALENT employs a sophisticated cooling system with built-in fans because, let’s face it, 200,000 lumens is nothing short of a tiny sun in your hands. The rechargeable battery pack boasts a runtime of up to 345 hours on Low, and it can be fast-charged using the included 100W USB-C PD charger in as little as two hours.

How to Choose the Brightest Flashlight

When choosing the brightest flashlight, you should know a few things first. Whether you’re cross-shopping a few lights to add to your kit or just want to be familiar with what’s available, these common terms will help you understand what makes one flashlight better than another.

Lumens

A lumen is a unit of measurement that describes brightness. Saying that a flashlight is bright doesn’t really help to describe how bright it is. Lumens provide context and a frame of reference so you can get a general idea of the amount of output a flashlight has. For reference, the LED flashlight on the back of a modern smartphone has an output of roughly 50 lumens.

Rechargeable, battery-powered, or both?

Whether you should get a rechargeable flashlight or battery-powered light depends on what you will use it for. If you plan on adding the light to your daily kit, then a rechargeable light might be worth looking into since you can easily plug it into a charger to power it up again. Plus, if you use it often, you will run through plenty of batteries. On the other hand, if you’re getting a flashlight for a particular use case or tossing it in an emergency pack, battery-powered might be the way to go since you can swap them out relatively quickly. This means you can have a functioning light again in a matter of seconds instead of waiting for a light to recharge.

Size

Size matters with everything in EDC, but that’s especially true when it comes to bright flashlights. While plenty of powerful flashlights also come in a small size, you’ll typically find that larger lights have the brightest output. This is because manufacturers can fit more LEDs on it or have more space to cram batteries into. These may not be the best flashlights for everyday carry, but they’re the best at what they do.

You might actually need a tactical flashlight

When it comes to picking an EDC flashlight most people will be fine with a tough light that is lightweight, easy to use, rechargeable, and somewhat water-resistant. Most, but not all people. If you’re putting your flashlight through extreme use and prefer tougher build quality, then it might be worth looking more into tactical flashlights that can withstand greater stress. That said, some options on this list should cover your bases if your main concern is peak brightness.

A flashlight’s lumens are just a measurement of the amount of light that a source emits over a period of time. It’s a unit of measurement that helps people compare flashlights.

What are the best features of the brightest flashlight?

The best feature of the brightest flashlight would be its lumen output. The second would probably be how large the flashlight is and whether or not it’s waterproof. It depends on your use case.

What is the brightest rechargeable flashlight?

The AceBeam X75 is the brightest rechargeable flashlight you can get, thanks to 8 CREE LEDs pumping out 80,000-lumens of brightness. It keeps its charging port hidden inside its tailcap for even more protection against the elements.

With the weather getting colder and the nights getting longer here in the Northern hemisphere, it’s a great time to stop and take stock of your gear. There are a lot of different items that go into making sure your bases are covered. Plenty of people opt for a quality knife or multitool. Still, one often overlooked piece of EDC gear is a flashlight, which is interesting because you would carry an umbrella for a 20% chance of rain, but most people opt not to carry a light when there’s a 100% chance of darkness every day.

A light you can rely on can be handy whether you’re trekking through the wilderness, prepping for the next power outage, or walking the dog. Not to mention a small, super bright light can also come in handy for emergencies and is a way brighter and more purpose-built tool than the light on your phone. Whether you’re looking to fill a gap in your EDC or are looking to upgrade, this list of the best flashlights has you covered. A quality light you can trust doesn’t have to be unattainable.

Depending on the model, you can configure both versions to either a single or dual output LED light ranging from 1100 to 1400 lumens. Key Features to Consider When Buying a Flashlight – How to Choose

Before finding the best flashlight for you, there are a few key things you should know. Not all flashlights prioritize the same features, so having a solid foundational knowledge of each term can help you pick the light best for you. You can learn something useful even if you don’t pick up a flashlight for yourself.

Brightness

You can’t talk about a flashlight without discussing how bright it gets. We measure brightness in lumens, which is how much light a source (like a bulb) emits. It’s hard to understand what this means without seeing it, so for reference, the flashlight on the back of the average smartphone is roughly 50 lumens when compared to our picks in this list.

Battery Life

Battery life is essential because it doesn’t matter how bright a flashlight can get if it has no power. Different battery types will provide different amounts of power. Plus, it also determines the minimum size that the flashlight needs to be. For example, a flashlight that accepts a AAA battery will likely be able to fit on your keychain, while other flashlights that need larger batteries need to rely on a pocket clip to be carried. Many flashlights on this list rely on CR123A batteries, which offer an above-average output and long runtime for their size, making them perfect for everyday carry.

Rechargeable Flashlight

If you don’t want to deal with replacing batteries every time the flashlight dies, you can always opt for a USB-rechargeable flashlight instead. These have built-in rechargeable batteries, so you can simply plug them into a charger when they die. These flashlights have benefits (like never needing to carry spare batteries with you) but also have downsides. If the battery dies while you’re out and about on a non-rechargeable flashlight, you can swap in a new battery and continue. With rechargeable batteries, you’ll need to wait before it has enough juice to keep going. Non-replaceable rechargeable batteries also mean your light has a finite lifetime and will need eventual replacing when its battery degrades and no longer has any usable capacity.

Light Output Type

If you really want to get down and dirty with flashlights, you should always know a little about the types of light output. Flashlights typically use LEDs (light-emitting diode) and will be either CREE or Nichia, both of which are tried-and-true options.
Nichia bulbs tend to have a more natural-looking light, meaning objects you shine your light on will have a more faithful reproduction of color. Some lights will also have different color temperatures ranging from 2000K to 5000K. The higher the K value, the cooler (more blue) the light. Lower K value lights will have a warmer tint closer to candles or old incandescent bulbs.
If you want to really dig into the details, we recommend reading our guide to EDC flashlights.

Beam Distance

While a flashlight’s brightness is an important feature, you shouldn’t overlook beam distance. This is how far your flashlight beam can reach, just like it sounds. If you’re only looking for whatever fell under your couch, this probably won’t matter to you, but the next time you’re looking for something outside, you’ll thank yourself for getting a flashlight with a decent throw.

Water-resistant

Flashlights use electronic components and electric currents, and electricity famously does not get along with water. Getting a flashlight that is at least water-resistant (or at best waterproof) will mean that your new light won’t get destroyed by the first passing raincloud. A typical flashlight is fairly water-resistant already, but flashlights with a waterproof Ingress Rating (IP) will have the upper hand in a gloomy downpour.

Form Factor

Flashlights come in all shapes and sizes. The ones on this list are standard lights that will fit on your keychain or in your pockets, but there are also other kinds. If you’re someone that prefers a light that you can use hands-free, then what you might need is a solid headlamp instead. If that sounds like you, check out our list of the best headlamps you can get.

Tactical Flashlight vs Normal

There are key differences between tactical flashlights and normal EDC flashlights. The main ones are that tactical flashlights are typically much larger, heavier, and have a strike bezel. They tend to be purpose-built for the most intense situations where the emphasis is on toughness over how easy they are to carry (think law enforcement). EDC flashlights place more value on being big enough to be effective but small enough that you can carry them daily. Tactical flashlights can also get extremely bright, so it might be a little impractical for someone simply taking the dog for a walk.

Best Flashlights FAQ

What is the best flashlight on the market?

If you want a powerful light with proper modes and a reasonable price, then the best flashlight is the Fenix PD34 V3.0. It won’t break the bank, and it lives comfortably in the gray area between being a small, pocketable flashlight and a large tactical one, while still offering many solid features.

What brand of flashlights do police use?

While this answer differs between places, a popular option is Streamlight.

What flashlights do Navy SEALs use?

Navy SEALs tend to use more tactical lights due to the need for brighter output, rugged build quality, and waterproofing.

While MagLite had a moment back in the day, the most popular flashlights now come from brands like Streamlight, SureFire, Fenix, and, Olight.

What are the best flashlights for camping?

The best flashlight for camping is something like the Sofirn SC21. You’ll want something that can get wet, get bright, and last long. This flashlight checks all three. It’s small enough to be comfortable to carry with you at all times but powerful enough that you can rely on it in the pitch black of the woods.

December 15, 2023: Nitecore, one of the leading flashlight manufacturers on the market with a deep and robust catalog of lights with a specialty in tactical applications, releases the EDC33, their latest feature-packed flashlight. It brings together all of the brand’s experience in making lights across multiple applications and combines them into a modern tactical flashlight that utilizes the latest in battery, LED, and electronic technology.

Key features of the EDC33 include a substantial 4,000-lumen output up to 492 yards thanks to a 9x array of NiteLab UHi 20 MAX LEDs–one of the first appearances of the LED on the mass market–powered by a newly developed 18650 Li-ion battery with an unprecedented 4,000mAH capacity, which is a fresh reversion from the industry leaning more towards larger batteries like the 21700. Use of 18650 allows the light to be more compact while still having a substantial output.

One major feature that Nitecore emphasized is the “LUMIN SHIELD,” which sets the EDC33 on full 4,000-lumen output in a special full flood mode to create a “wall of light” as a deterrent in an emergency. Other modern features include the use of more premium anodized 7075 aluminum for the body, a hardware lockout switch, a USB-C charging port with a rotary cover, and an optical sensor that automatically drops the output when it detects an obstruction at close range.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you’ve been following us for a while, then you’d know that not all flashlights are created equal. This is especially true for long-throw flashlights, which serve a specific purpose that flood lights or general-use flashlights can’t fulfill. The RovyVon S21 is a high-performance flashlight with a unique design, a super bright LED, and a long throw beam, among other compelling features. But these aren’t the only characteristics that set it apart from other long-throw lights we’ve tested.

The RovyVon S21 is made of high-quality aluminum treated with Micro-Arc Oxidation (MAO),  an electrochemical process that produces oxide protective coatings. This adds a hard, durable coating that prevents overheating, withstands daily wear, and enhances both its modern aesthetic and corrosion resistance. It uses a high-performance Luminus SFT-70 6500K LED, which produces an astounding maximum output of 3000 lumens. This LED features a round light-emitting surface, creating an extremely uniform beam and providing excellent color rendering. While it packs a punch, the flashlight still manages to have a handheld size of 5.6 x 1.1” while weighing a mere 116 grams (without its battery), making it easy to carry and use.

Long-throw lights are helpful for long-distance surveys, scoping out dimly lit roads, or when you need to illuminate a hiking path ahead. The S21’s high-intensity beam can reach up to 400m, which is suitable for most situations. The flashlight’s tight beam angle ensures a focused and concentrated light.

Another feature that sets the RovyVon S21 apart is its intuitive mechanical rotary switch. You can rotate the switch to get the brightness level you need, from Eco (30 lumens) to High (1000 lumens). You can also press and hold the metal switch to activate the Turbo mode (3000 lumens) when needed. A power indicator tells you how much battery is left every time you turn it on and also shows you the charging status when you plug in the USB-C cable to recharge the included 5000mAh battery, which can be fully charged in just 2.5 hours.

It has an IPX8 waterproof rating, which means it can be submerged in water up to 2m for 30 minutes. Like most flashlights in its category, it also has a strong magnet at the tail cap, which allows you to attach it to any metal surface for hands-free use. You can also use the included lanyard or pocket clip for extra carry options.

What we like: We love the look (and feel) of the Micro-Arc Oxidation treatment, and the fact that it adds another level of durability is a great plus.

What to watch out for: It’s not the most compact mini flashlight in its class, and it also carries a higher price than other flashlights with similar features.

Final verdict: Combining durability, performance, and aesthetics in a small package, the RovyVon S21 is packed with features that make it an excellent choice for those looking for a long-throw flashlight.

The post The Drop: Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Headlamps can be helpful in various situations, whether you’re out night fishing, setting up a campsite after dusk, hiking an unfamiliar path, or working in a dimly lit area. The Nitecore NU11 Clip-On Cap Light adds some versatility to your standard headlamp because instead of having to wear it with a harness, you can clip it on your cap, attach it to your backpack, or wear it on your headband like a traditional headlamp while still enjoying hands-free lighting.

The NU11 has two types of light, white and red, with white light featuring two additional modes: high and low. In high mode, the NU11 can produce up to 150 lumens of brightness, reaching a distance of up to 55 yards. In low mode, the light produces up to 45 lumens of brightness, better suited for close-range tasks while saving battery power. The red light also has two modes: constant-on and flashing. The constant-on mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which is ideal for preserving your night vision or reading maps. The flashing mode can produce up to 4 lumens of brightness, which can serve as a signal or emergency light.

At only 1.45 oz, the Nitecore NU11 is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry around on treks. Despite its small size, battery life remains impressive. It can last up to 30 hours in 4-lumen, constant-on red light mode, 6 hours in 45-lumen Low white light mode, and 2.5 hours on High white light mode. A handy indicator will let you know when it needs recharging, with a full charge achieved in only 2 hours via a fast-charging USB-C port.

One of the most useful features of the Nitecore NU11 is its infrared motion sensor, which you can activate by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. Once the sensor is on, you can turn the NU11 on and off with a simple wave of your hand within 10cm (about 4”) of the sensor. This feature comes in handy (or should I say, no-handy?) when your hands are dirty or occupied. You can also use the power button to adjust the brightness settings or switch to the red light mode.

What we like: Clip it on your cap for a direct and focused beam or attach it to your pack for a wider and diffused beam. This versatility and compact “clip-anywhere” feature makes it easy to recommend for your next adventure.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The Ledlenser HF6R Work headlamp is a versatile, hands-free lighting solution designed to work in harsh environments. It can throw a focused beam for long-rage tasks up to a distance of 160 meters thanks to its 800 lumens output, while a simple turn on its focus wheel switches to a soft and even flood light for close-up work. Three color modes are available: white, red, and natural light. The natural light mode has a high color rendering index (CRI), which helps you see colors more accurately and easily distinguish objects like cables or wires.

Working long hours won’t be a problem either. The Ledlenser HF6R Work headlamp is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery that can last up to eight hours at mid-power level and is charged via a magnetic USB-C cable for added convenience. The headlamp also has a battery and charge indicator, a low battery warning, and a backup mode that activates a low-power emergency safety light when the battery is almost out. Keeping the light from overheating is a temperature control system that actively cools the light, ensuring the longevity of its LEDs.

Its IP68 rating makes it fully dust-proof and certifies that it can withstand being in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. The HF6R Work variant includes various mounting options for helmets and a wall mount over the base HF6R Core variant, giving you more flexibility.

What we like: It has a 7-year warranty, which shows that Ledlenser stands behind the craftsmanship and quality of its products.

What to watch out for: It uses a proprietary magnetic charging cable. While convenient, you won’t be able to charge the light if you lose or damage the original cord.

Final verdict: With its selectable lighting modes, IP68 rating, and long-lasting battery, the Ledlenser HF6R Work headlamp is an excellent option for those looking for a reliable and versatile light source that can adapt to any work situation or preference.

If you are looking for a compact EDC flashlight that’s still powerful enough to cover your bases, the Fenix E12 V2.0 has you covered. The Fenix E12 V2.0 is powered by a single AA battery and operated with its anti-slip tail switch, offering two modes and a maximum output of 160 lumens over 75 yards. AA batteries are also easy to come by, making it an easy task to find extra fuel, especially in an emergency.

The light also pushes the limits of portability, measuring only 3“ long and weighing in at 1 ounce. It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

LOOP GEAR burst into the flashlight scene and onto my radar with a literal flash, putting together a combination of features that both interested and delighted me on a number of levels, from material to functional. The first SK01s LEP was a monster of a zoomable LEP that immediately put LOOP GEAR’s best foot forward, showing off their prowess and understanding of wildly differing disciplines for flashlights and EDC in general. It combined high-quality fidget toys, super-premium materials, and even a niche flashlight application in LEPs and somehow made it all work–for a price. This was quickly followed by a more versatile LED version that also dropped the size and price of the SK01s by a fair bit.

Now crowdfunding their third light, LOOP GEAR has figured it out. The SK03 is the culmination of some of the brand’s best ideas and design language but sized and priced down to more everyday sensibilities. For starters, it comes with the same futuristic design that the SK01s impressed with. Smooth brushed and polished surfaces, geometric cutouts, and grooves give a striking look far removed from the usual black, knurled tactical lights we’ve all seen.

The SK03 is an AA-sized light. It’s not as popular as it used to be for EDC lights (which have either transitioned to built-in lithium-ion batteries or moved up to much larger and more powerful cells), but it offers a fantastic sweet spot for an EDC light. Bonus points if it supports Li-ion 14500 batteries, which the SK03 does. The platform and LED–the campaign is starting initially with a Philips/Lumileds LUXEON HL2X but has a stretch goal for a white Cree XP-G4–are designed to hit 1,000 lumens at 120 meters (~393 feet), with its modes controlled by a rear clicky tail switch.

Like its big brothers, there’s more than meets the eye to this light, and it comes with more than a few interesting tricks up its double-barreled sleeve. While compatible with standard AA-sized batteries, rechargeable or otherwise, it comes with a USB-C charging 14500 for maximum runtime and output. Forgoing the more fidgety aspects of the SK01, the SK03’s optional alternative clip comes with a slide-out knife and bottle opener that acts as an adjustable magnetic stand for the light.

A few more flourishes round out the light, including auxiliary 4500K side LEDs and glow-in-the-dark panels within the head that get charged up when you use the light. Its regular clip is two-way, and last but not least, the SK03 comes with IP65-rated water and dust resistance.

What we like: The SK01 has been one of my favorite flashlights in recent history, and the SK03 is LOOP GEAR’s most usable EDC light yet. It also comes with all the fit, finish, and functionality I am now coming to expect from the brand at a surprisingly affordable price.

What to watch out for: Standard crowdfunding disclaimer here, so just be aware of how pledging on Kickstarter works. Also, be mindful of the LED/material options available when selecting which model to pledge for.

Final verdict: I am hoping Christmas comes early with this light.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Everyday carry flashlight manufacturers have begun releasing torches featuring Laser Excited Phosphor (LEP) elements in the chase for greater light output and beam projection. Take the new AceBeam Terminator M1 flashlight, a dual-head specialty flashlight made for flashlight enthusiasts who want the best of all worlds. This design uses traditional LEDs and LEP emitters to give you floodlight and spotlight capability in–like its namesake–one seriously imposing package.

If you’re wondering what makes LEP technology so unique, it’s because it works differently LEDs. Those use a light-emitting diode to generate light, while LEP lights use a blue laser beam to hit a phosphor element, generating more concentrated light than a regular LED emitter at very, very high candela (intensity) levels. Needless to say, it’s probably not a great idea to point an LEP of any power directly into anyone’s eyes.

And on the AceBeam Terminator M1, you get dedicated use of both technologies. The LEP module puts a zoomable spotlight beam to a rated 1,600 meters (1,750 yards, or over a mile) at a top end of “just” 700 lumens, but with a substantial 640,000 candela. The traditional LED section features three LED modules in the head. You can choose a triple cool white at 6500K for a maximum 3,500 lumens or a triple array of enthusiast Nichia 519A LEDs at 5000K neutral white at a reduced 2,300 lumens but much higher CRI (color rendering index).

The Terminator is a massive light that may not be pocketable, but you can keep it in your pack or emergency go bag when needed. And the included 5000mAh 21700 battery is both high capacity and conveniently rechargeable via USB-C, so you can keep it topped up easily with your EDC power bank or wall plug.

What we like: The dual LED and LEP nature of the AceBeam Terminator M1 means you can carry both functions without sacrificing anything except your bag space and hard-earned cash.

What to watch out for: Flashlights with LEP elements are lasers, so their use may be more restricted. Check your local regulations, and always exercise safety while using your gear. Pay careful attention not to shine this light in your eyes (or anyone else’s), and you should be good to go. Be sure also to check your needs to determine whether you need the higher output of cool white or a more discerning high CRI beam for the LED half of the light.

Final verdict: While this specialty light isn’t the best for EDC, it’s a good choice for anyone who needs extreme LEP reach and traditional LED flashlight capabilities. The AceBeam Terminator M1 allows you to carry one formidable flashlight instead of two with minimal compromise.
