We’re four years into Tactile Turn’s seasonal releases, and they’ve consistently dazzled us with each drop, now they’re cranking up the fun with their latest release, “Vice.” Paying homage to the iconic, neon-lit, retro-futuristic vibes of the 80s synthwave/Miami Vice era, this pen combines classic 80s style with modern functionality, delivering all the practicality and good vibes we’ve come to expect from Tactile Turn. For the first time, Tactile Turn offers us two perspectives on a common theme with the beachy-keen Day and sinful Night versions of Vice. Both versions boast striking gradient fades, vibrant pops of color, and lasered palm tree clip engravings, all encased in the brand’s signature Grade 5 Titanium Side Click base with geometric grid lines and custom Cerakote finishing, ensuring solid grip and a durable, stylish body. The side click mechanism adds tactile, fidgety satisfaction with every click—perfect for those who love a pen that’s fun to use. Available in three sizes—Standard, Short, and Mini—the Vice offers compatibility with popular ink refills, making it as functional as it is stylish. Each Vice pen comes packaged in a commemorative box with a matching sticker and sunglasses so you can fully embrace the retro vibe. Vice will be available for purchase until September 30th, 2024 so don’t wait too long if you want to get your hands on one.

This week’s new releases include a milestone G-SHOCK, Vosteed’s upgraded Hedgehog, and RovyVon’s advanced SL series flashlight.

G-SHOCK GMWB5000SS-2 50th Anniversary Release

The watch industry changed forever in 1974 when Casio released its first-ever wristwatch, the Casiotron. As the world’s first digital watch with an automatic calendar function, the Casiotron represented a ground-breaking shift in the industry, introducing digital technology into the realm of personal timekeeping. 50 years later, Casio celebrates its roots by releasing a set of models that pay homage to several Casio icons, one of them being the G-SHOCK GMWB5000SS-2. Inspired by the iconic GMWB5000 (which was in turn inspired by the very first G-SHOCK), the G-SHOCK GMWB5000SS-2 retains the original G-SHOCK form but elevates it with a full-metal exterior. Design elements such as the blue IP finish applied to the bezel top and gold vapor deposition on the dial’s perimeter pay homage to the original Casiotron while symbolizing the vastness of the sky and sea. Gold IP accents on the side buttons and the fluted pattern on the dial’s perimeter are also great details to notice.

The GMWB5000SS-2 boasts a robust suite of features that make it every bit a modern G-SHOCK. It connects to the CASIO WATCHES smartphone app for functions such as automatic time adjustment, reminders, and a phone finder, while maintaining all the usual G-SHOCK functions, easily viewed even with low light thanks to its Super Illuminator backlight. The watch is encased in special eco-packaging made from recycled materials and includes a cotton pouch for accessory storage, underlining Casio’s commitment to sustainability. It harnesses solar power to operate its functionalities, including Bluetooth connectivity and radio-controlled timekeeping (Multiband 6), ensuring precision and reliability. The DLC-coated screw-lock case back, engraved with the 50th-anniversary logo, coupled with its metal band featuring a bicolor finish and a “50th Anniversary” engraving, make this timepiece a true testament to the G-SHOCK’s longevity and iconic position in the industry.

Tactile Knife Co. Osprey

Some of the coolest and classiest gents folding knives have come out of Tactile Knife Company as they’ve expanded past making some of the best everyday carry pens you can buy today. With the release of their new Osprey, Tactile has entered new territory once again, and we like it. The Osprey is Tactile’s first dedicated fixed-blade outdoor knife, with an incredibly beefy full-tang construction featuring MagnaCut steel hardened to 63-64 Rockwell for the ultimate in modern cutting potential and edge retention.

The design language of the Osprey melds the shape of a rugged outdoor survival knife with the clean and minimalist gents’ aesthetic of Tactile Knife Company’s products. The 3.7” cutting blade features a clip-point shape with a well-defined tip for piercing and a slightly recurved belly that enhances its slicing ability. Last but not least, the small but pronounced patch of top jimping works in concert with the carefully shaped and chamfered ergonomic grip in the Richlite Micarta scales to provide substantial control over cuts big and small. The Osprey is the beefiest knife in Tactile’s stable yet, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

RovyVon SL Series Multi-Function Safety Light

Renowned for their innovative lighting solutions, RovyVon takes illumination to the next level with the newly released SL series. This multi-function safety light packs a powerful punch with its 20 LED bulbs. The primary front light delivers up to 1000 lumens of cool white light, perfect for outdoor nighttime activities, while the secondary lights offer a high Color Rendering Index (high CRI), red light SL42 and SL44), and two 365nm UV LEDs (SL41 & SL43), catering to various lighting needs. The side lights, available in white and red (some models include blue), feature multiple modes like flashing and breathing, making them ideal for emergency use.

The RovyVon SL series is built tough, sporting a body made from high-quality polyamide materials with an impressive IPX8 impact and water resistance rating that keeps it functional, even in harsh conditions. This light comes with four independent switch buttons for simple and intuitive operation, a large 2500mAh battery that recharges in 1.5 hours via the USB-C, and a real-time battery indicator. It also comes with versatile mounting options, including detachable and adjustable clips, a magnetic base, and various clip types, ensuring easy and secure hands-free attachment in any location. So, whether for EDC, emergencies, or outdoor adventures, the RovyVon SL series multi-function safety light is designed to meet all your needs.

Vosteed Hedgehog Aluminum

We’re big fans of Vosteed’s RSKAOS Titanium Knife and the recently released Vosteed Hedgehog is a smaller, lighter, and more affordable iteration of the premium folder. Needless to say, we love it already. Sporting a 2.99″ S35VN blade, the Vosteed Hedgehog promises exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance. Its modified sheepsfoot blade shape with a lightly curved belly makes it perfect for slicing and cutting tasks. With an overall length of 7.11″, a handle length of 4.12″, and a weight of just 4.42 oz, it’s compact enough to leave plenty of room for other essentials in your pocket when closed.

It recently underwent an upgrade, and the new Hedgehog’s handle is crafted from 6061 aerospace-grade aluminum, featuring a hard-coated matte finish and a CNC-machined frag pattern that provides both enhanced control and attractive styling. The design includes precisely machined weight relief pockets to minimize user fatigue, along with double CNC chamfered corners for added comfort. It has several deployment options, including a back flipper, thumb stud, and fuller, all supported by a ceramic ball bearing system and a Top Liner Lock mechanism with an integrated button for intuitive closure. The result is a smooth, quick, and safe operation that makes the Hedgehog not only a practical tool but one that’s also tons of fun to use.

Stabby Labs The FN PEN 2.0

Designed to be the most robust writing tool in your EDC, the FN Pen 2.0 retains the sleek, discreet design of its predecessor but boasts new features that make it the ultimate tactical pen. Made from CNC-machined aircraft-grade aluminum, this pen is built to last. Its standout feature is the threaded bore, allowing for interchangeable tips. Whether you need the Penetrator Tip for metal scribing and ice breaking, the Graphite Pencil Tip for writing and sketching, or the Glass Breaker Tip for shattering tempered glass, the FN Pen 2.0 adapts to your needs.

Additional upgrades include a rubber eraser that cushions your thumb during strikes and doubles as a pencil eraser. The new custom-shaped magnet embedded in the eraser cap snaps perfectly over the tungsten carbide tip, providing a satisfying fidgeting experience and ensuring you never misplace the tip. With its enhanced versatility and thoughtful design, the FN Pen 2.0 is the ultimate tool for any situation.

Kizer Harpoon Mini

If you’re looking for a knife to take with you on your outdoor excursions this summer, make sure to take the newly updated Kizer Harpoon Mini. Made in collaboration with Maverick Customs in Kentucky, this smaller 3” version of their original Harpoon fixed-blade knife upgrades the blade steel to premium CPM 3V that can withstand outdoors, camping, and survival utility tasks like cutting through wood and tough material. The namesake harpoon-style blade shape has a well-defined point for piercing tasks, and a large curved belly for slicing, making this a good knife for skinning and meal prep in the wilderness.

We especially like the flat ground edge of the blade and the lack of a bolster at the heel, making the Kizer Harpoon Mini exceptionally easy to resharpen and maintain on a whetstone. The blacked-out coating also contrasts nicely with the yellow translucent PEI scales on the handle, which is on trend in the everyday carry knife space. The full-tang construction and sheath mean this knife is always ready for work, with no moving parts to fail, making this a great all-around fixed blade for everyday carry to pick up this summer.

LifeStraw Sip Reusable Stainless-Steel Water Filter Straw

Ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water is vital for maintaining good health, and the LifeStraw Sip Reusable Stainless-Steel Water Filter Straw – Package of 3 is designed to meet this need. Made from high-quality stainless steel and featuring BPA-free and FDA-approved silicone mouthpieces, these straws prioritize safety and durability. The innovative high-flow filter membrane uses a hollow-core membrane microfilter medium that effectively removes 99.999999% of bacteria and 99.999% of parasites, including E. coli and salmonella, as well as 99.999% of microplastics. This straw also uses a 0.2-micron pore-size filter that can purify up to 1,000 liters of water, meeting US EPA and NSF P231 standards and ensuring safe, clean, and drinkable water.

Each 10” straw weighs just 1.8 oz (3 oz with its case), making it an ideal travel/on-the-go companion. The user-friendly design requires no batteries or electrical outlets, making it simple to use. The package includes three straws, each with a leak-proof carry case, adding convenience and protection. As a B Corp, LifeStraw ensures that every purchase helps provide a child in need with safe water for an entire school year, reflecting its commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

Elevate your everyday carry with a range of new packs, pocket knives, pens, and more.

Benchmade’s New MagnaCut Knives Aren’t Afraid of the Water

Benchmade produces some of our all-time favorite knives, so there are a lot of reasons to be excited about these two releases: the Benchmade Adira MagnaCut folding knife and its smaller sibling, the Benchmade Mini Adira. Starting with the larger Adira, it features a 3.9” drop point blade crafted from CPM MagnaCut stainless steel offering unparalleled durability and superior corrosion resistance. The Adira is thoughtfully designed with high-visibility Depth Blue Grivory handle scales and an orange thumb stud opener, ensuring quick deployment even in challenging conditions. The ambidextrous AXIS Lock mechanism provides secure and effortless locking, while the deep-carry pocket clip allows for discreet and convenient tip-up carry.

The Benchmade Mini Adira folding knife offers the same features as its larger counterpart but in a more compact size. With a 3.2” drop point blade made from the same high-performance MagnaCut steel, the Mini Adira is perfect for those who prefer a smaller yet equally reliable tool. It features a smaller handle (4.25” vs 5.12”) with similar Depth Blue Grivorly handle scales that provide a comfortable grip. Weighing just 3.09 oz., the Mini Adira combines lightweight convenience with the power and precision Benchmade knives are known for, making it an indispensable piece for everyday carry enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. These knives are designed to excel in wet environments, so if you’ve been looking for a knife for preparing bait or scaling fish, the Adira is worth checking out.

Keep One Eye on the Horizon With Nocs Provisions’ Waterproof Monocular

Nocs Provisions’ Zoom Tube 8×32 Waterproof Monocular is a must-have tool for avid explorers and outdoor enthusiasts. This compact, pocket-sized telescope offers powerful optics with 8x magnification and a wide 384-feet field of vision at 1000 yards, perfect for birdwatching, navigation, and nature observation, and easy to use with a smartphone to take zoomed photos. It’s equipped with a scratch-resistant, multi-coated glass lens system with an anti-reflective coating and a superior Bak4 roof prism that delivers exceptional clarity and sharpness, even in challenging lighting.

The Zoom Tube is encased in a durable, high-impact rubber armor that provides a secure, non-slip grip and substantial shock resistance. This monocular is fully waterproof and fog-proof, thanks to its nitrogen-filled internal chambers, ensuring reliable performance in all weather conditions. Its ergonomic design fits comfortably in one hand, and the focus wheel is conveniently positioned for easy and quick adjustments. A twist-up eyecup accommodates glasses wearers, and the built-in tripod adapter enhances its versatility. We like this Zoom Tube from Nocs for its thoughtful features and excellent optical performance, and it’s worth it to cop one for your next outdoor adventure.

Wingback’s Mechanical Pen Promises a Lifetime of Writing Bliss

Wingback has introduced the Steel Mechanical Pen, a built-to-last ballpoint pen designed with a single-handed twist mechanism to prevent wobble. Made from aerospace-grade stainless steel, this pen feels satisfyingly weighty in the hand and promises durability for a lifetime of writing tasks, from meeting notes to spontaneous bursts of creativity.

One of my favorite aspects of the Wingback is its barrel length. At 4.6”, it’s slightly shorter than most standard pens, yet it provides a full-sized writing experience. The machining is top-notch, with a slightly textured finish and knurling that ensures a secure grip without being too sharp. Some users may feel limited since it only supports Fisher Space Pen refills and lacks a clip but we still think it’s a solid EDC and in our opinion, the Wingback Steel Mechanical Pen is built to last with timeless design.

DSPTCH and Engineered Garments Team Up for a Technical Dyneema Daypack

DSPTCH has consistently been pushing the envelope with its packs and bags so we expected no different from their special edition collection with Engineered Garments. The collection features four bag styles, including the Ridgepack, which caught our attention. The “shell-style” backpack is a new direction for their pack design, intentionally simplified for lightweight and versatile carry. Crafted from premium materials like Dyneema Composite Fabric (said to be 15x stronger than steel) and 1680D Ballistic Nylon with DWR coating, the Ridgepack ensures durability without the extra weight. Inside, you’ll find a 410D Nylon Packcloth lining, also with DWR coating, making it perfectly equipped to withstand urban commutes and everyday adventures. Since the bags are hand-dyed, each bag takes on a unique appearance.

But the Ridgepack’s innovation doesn’t stop at its exterior. This backpack boasts a modular design, allowing users to customize their carry experience using pouches and clips. This means that whether you need quick access to your essentials or a secure spot for your laptop, the Ridgepack has you covered. Its padded sleeve comfortably fits up to a 16″ slim laptop, keeping your tech safe on the go. Ideal for urban commuters and EDC enthusiasts, the Ridgepack is set to redefine what you expect from a modern backpack.

CIVIVI’s New ExOne Has the Chops to Be a Fantastic Everyday Flipper

CIVIVI continues to design some of the best knives on the market, and the ExOne designed by the exceptional Brian Brown, well-known for his work on the Trogon with parent-brand WE Knife, is no exception. The ExOne boasts a 2.94” reverse tanto blade crafted from Nitro-V steel celebrated for its toughness, corrosion resistance, and edge retention. With a blade hardness of 59-61 HRC and a hollow grind, this satin-finished blade excels in precision tasks such as opening packages and fine cutting and can be deployed using the full-length fuller or flipper.

The handle of the ExOne is constructed from durable G10 material in an elegant ivory finish, complemented by green-painted stainless steel liners, offering a pleasing aesthetic contrast. The pocket clip is designed for tip-up deep carry and is reversible for left or right-handed use. The ceramic ball-bearing pivot assembly ensures smooth and reliable deployment, while the liner lock mechanism provides secure blade lockup during use. The CIVIVI ExOne stands out as an excellent EDC knife, combining high-quality materials, thoughtful design, and superior performance at an affordable price point.

The post 10 Best Write-Anywhere Pens in 2022 appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
Most people carry an EDC pen on their person to ensure that they can easily sign checks, take down notes, or write in their journal, wherever they may be. Sometimes, though, the conditions you may find yourself in may not be ideal for writing effectively with regular pens. Rain, wet and muddy conditions, having to write upside down, or more extreme circumstances such as intense heat or cold, or even zero gravity, require a bit of technology to make sure you can even write anything at all.

In this guide, we’re highlighting ten of the best EDC pens you can write with anywhere. Whether you choose a pen that uses pressurized ink refills or one that pressurizes its own cartridges through a built-in mechanism, these pens will ensure that you can lay down the ink for your notes or journals, regardless of where and in what position you use them.

We all know how the story goes: Paul C. Fisher and his company supposedly invested a million dollars to create a pen that astronauts could use in space. The original AG7 “anti-gravity” pen was patented in 1965 and taken into space in 1967 by NASA. The pen did not require gravity to get the ink going, but rather used pressurized nitrogen to consistently and evenly push the gel-like ink out regardless of conditions, in zero gravity or upside down. The Fisher AG7 Astronaut Pen is a timeless design that holds up to this day with reliable writing performance, classic looks, and a fidgety click mechanism that uses a pusher to deploy the tip and a side click button to retract. Put a little bit of history in your shirt pocket with the AG7, still available in the original chrome-plated brass body.

The Pilot Downforce uses a different approach to providing a write-anywhere and take-anywhere pen. A mechanism in the top button channels air pressure into the refill, providing smooth and reliable ink flow in any condition. The spring-loaded binder clip is the retraction mechanism, and this ensures that you don’t mark your other stuff with ink when you clamp it down for attaching. Its wide jaws also mean you can easily clip the Downforce to your thickest pockets or book covers. The body and grip themselves are also thick, making the pen easier and more comfortable to use over longer periods. Meant as a take-anywhere pen, the Downforce uses antibacterial ingredients in the body material, giving you a degree of hygienic safety from an instrument that will see a lot of use in your EDC.

The Tombow Airpress is a carry-everywhere pen favored by many outdoor enthusiasts, featuring a robust metal clip and rubberized body that stays durable during carry and usage. It’s also a great write-everywhere pen due to its internal construction. This allows you to write upside down and in cold conditions, and even on wet paper. The tactile feel of the clicker mechanism and the subtle sound it makes as it pressurizes the cartridge make for a fun and fidgety pen for EDC.

COAST’s Voice Activated RL35R Headlamp Takes “Hands-Free” to the Next Level

COAST takes “hands-free” illumination to the next level with their latest headlamp, the RL35R. You get two main LEDs—one for spot and one for flood—which can be used independently or combined for up to 1,100 lumens of output. There are green and blue LEDs for preserving night vision and map reading, as well as for identification and inspection. Surrounding the LED array is the “ARC280°” area light system which contains diffused warm and red LEDs for even more utility. That’s already plenty useful for a headlamp, but the RL35R takes it to the next level with its ability to recognize voice commands. While it does have a full set of controls up top, when activated, the headlamp can recognize commands like “COAST ARC” or “COAST RED” to enable whichever illumination is needed, without needing your hands to fiddle with switches or lose their grip on an important task. It’s an unprecedented feature we didn’t even realize would be so useful, but it makes perfect sense.

The RL35R is all business up front but rounds out its features on the back, which houses a rear safety signal as well as its rechargeable ZX850 (18650) Li-ion battery, along with a convenient USB-C charging port on both the light and the battery itself. With IP54 dust and water resistance, the RL35R is ready for the next adventure, and we’re definitely COAST ON board for what the brand has in store next.

The post The 12 Best Mechanical Pencils in 2024 — Reviewed for Everyday Carry appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>

A wood pencil is one of the first things most people learn to write with as they grow up, but because they break easily, regular pencils don’t feature that often in people’s everyday carry. I use my trusty mechanical pencil whenever I need a pencil in my EDC.

EDC enthusiasts prefer writing with mechanical pencils because they feature sturdy metal or plastic construction. I also like the refillable lead because I often break the graphite on traditional pencils. The convenience and practicality of carrying a mechanical pencil make them the best choice for drafters, artists, and students. There’s even a case for using mechanical pencils over traditional pencils because of their environmental impact. Research goes either way on the matter. The University of British Columbia suggests the choice lies in personal preference.

Undeniably, a quality EDC mechanical pencil will last you a long time. That’s why it’s essential to choose the right mechanical pencil, and in this guide, I’ll go over some of my favorites and explain why they deserve a place in your everyday carry.

The Best Overall Mechanical Pencil: uni Kuru Toga Roulette

One of the best things about the entire uni Kuru Toga line of mechanical pencils is that they automatically deploy lead for you as you write. Having to actuate a side click or top click mechanism is distracting sometimes, and the Kuru Toga eliminates that. And because the lead deployment is reliable, this is my pick for the best overall mechanical pencil. The Kuru Toga is also excellent for EDC because, unlike the standard Kuru Toga made of plastic, this particular Roulette model features a sturdy metal construction that feels great in your hand.

The Best Mechanical Pencil Upgrade: Tactile Turn Pencil

I am a big fan of Tactile Turn’s attention to detail. You’re probably familiar with their bolt action and side click pens, but the Tactile Turn Pencil combines the two designs. The Tactile Turn Pencil uses a linear bolt on the side that retracts the lead, available in 0.5mm and 0.7mm thicknesses. The quality Schmidt DSM2006 mechanism inside has a smooth action that won’t jam when trying to write, and a friction-fit eraser at the back completes the package.

Tactile Turn makes this quality EDC mechanical pencil in the United States in Texas, and you can get it in titanium, copper, bronze, and zirconium. You can upgrade the clip and the bolt with titanium treated with a Damascus finish. You can even have them engrave the pen to personalize it further. The attention to detail, beautiful design, and immense customizability of the Tactile Turn Pencil make it one of the best first-step upgrades when starting in the world of EDC mechanical pencils.

The Best Technical Mechanical Pencil: rOtring 800

I like the rOtring 800 for technical work because it’s easy to see the tip of your pencil lead unobstructed by the pencil’s body. The internal brass mechanism is built to support that extended lead. It can do that because the rOtring 800 has a twist and click retraction, unlike other mechanical pencil designs’ click or push mechanisms. Whether you’re using this pencil in combination with a compass and ruler while graphing something out or creating a design on a sketchpad, you’ll enjoy the fine control you get from the rOtring 800.

The Best Mechanical For EDC: Staedtler Mars 780

A Staedtler Mars was one of my first quality everyday carry mechanical pencils. It’s a lead holder, which means, unlike a standard design with a bunch of thin-diameter graphite shafts, the Staedtler Mars comes with a 2mm lead with an integrated lead sharpener that functions with the pushdown mechanism. It comes with HB hardness lead, and you can rotate the metal clip to the correct indicator point for the particular lead you place into it to remind you of what you have loaded. The lead holder design makes it closer to a traditional pencil in concept, built sturdier and significant for all-around everyday carry. It’s affordable, too, but don’t mistake being cheap for poor quality.

The Best Value Mechanical Pencil: Pentel GraphGear 1000

The Pentel GraphGear 1000 marks where you get the best value for money when starting out in mechanical pencil EDC. Its feature set is replicated in pencils that can be had for much more money, but it remains affordable and accessible to most people. For under 20 dollars at the time of this writing, you get a full-body aluminum construction with a precision retracting mechanism compatible with leads down to 0.3mm up to 0.9mm if you prefer a bolder writing experience. I particularly like the spring-loaded clip, which helps the Pentel GraphGear 1000 grab onto materials of varying thicknesses without breaking or bending.

Our Other Recommendations

Pilot Dr. Grip 4+1: The Pilot Dr. Grip is one of the most comfortable mechanical pencils you can buy. Its thick body and ergonomic padded grip make writing comfortable for extended periods.

OHTO Mechanical Wood Pencil: Suppose you want a mechanical pencil that looks like a traditional pencil. In that case, the OHTO Mechanical Wood Pencil is what you need. It has a traditional wooden body and the look of a standard pencil, but it takes 0.5mm pencil leads inside.

Pilot G2 Mechanical Pencil: The Pilot G2 gel pen is among the community’s favorite EDC writing tools. Today would be your lucky day if you didn’t know it comes in a mechanical pencil version. It has the same shape you love with a mechanical pencil’s erasability.

STKR Concepts Mechanical Carpenter Pencil: A carpenter pencil is built tough for scribing marks onto wood before you cut. Unlike traditional ones requiring a knife to sharpen or a specialized tool, the STKR Concepts Mechanical Carpenter Pencil uses a dedicated thicker pencil lead.

Tombow Mechanical Pencil: Many mechanical pencil enthusiasts use a Tombow Mono eraser with their EDC because of its superior erasing power compared to most pencil erasers. You can carry one item with the Tombow Mechanical Pencil because it has the same quality eraser at the rear of the pencil itself.

Rhodia 9340C: The Rhodia 9340C has a distinctive hexagonal metal shape that works as a roll stop on a slanted desk. It also has a refillable 3-in-1 multi-pen and mechanical pencil mechanism.

Pilot Birdy Mini Mechanical Pencil: Out of all these mechanical pencils, this mini mechanical pencil and pen combination is my personal EDC choice. It has been ever since I picked it up years ago at a Tokyu Hands stationery aisle in Japan. Its slim size makes it a good backup, and I always keep it in my bag or pouch when I forget a full-sized writing tool at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best mechanical pencil?

The ability to advance a mechanical pencil lead without thinking about it makes the Uni Kuru Toga Roulette a safe bet for most people.

Is 0.5mm or 0.7mm lead better?

The thickness of the pencil lead dictates how bold your writing will be, not the darkness of the writing itself. If you write small, a thinner diameter, like 0.5mm, might be better. 0.7mm leads are better if you draw thicker lines regularly.

Why are mechanical pencils the best?

Mechanical pencils are the best because they let you write and erase like a traditional pencil but without the possibility that you snap your pencil in half in your bag like you probably did in school. The durability and convenience of a mechanical pencil make it an excellent choice whether you are taking notes, solving a math problem, or sketching for art.

How to Choose the Perfect Mechanical Pencil for EDC and Beyond

So you’ve decided to add a mechanical pencil to your kit. Now what? You should know a few things when choosing the perfect mechanical pencil that fits your needs. You’ll need to know what lead thickness you’re most comfortable writing with. Some more common sizes are 0.3mm, 0.5mm, and 0.7mm, with the smaller number corresponding to a finer line. Some lead sizes are more challenging to source than others, so keep that in mind if you want to go to either extreme. The hardness of the lead is essential, too. The standard American school pencil uses HB graphite. You can go with 2B or beyond if you want something softer. Graphite values like F, H, 2H, and beyond have a bit more durability and are lighter, but if you go harder, they can become brittle.

Another thing to keep in mind is whether or not you want an eraser. We all make mistakes (some more than others), and a built-in eraser can give you some wiggle room when you need perfect, professional-looking lines. Lastly, you’ll want something that can live up to your particular flavor of EDC. A rugged metal build might be best if you’re in the field daily. Similarly, a heavy metal construction might differ from what you’re after if you’re trying to keep your pockets light.

Adding a mechanical pencil to your carry comes with benefits. Mechanical pencils don’t need to be sharpened. They stay the same length no matter how many years you use them. Plus, many mechanical pencils allow you to draw with consistently fine lines, thanks to clever barrel designs and different tip designs. They have a consistent advancement mechanism, so you never need to fumble with a sharpener to get a clean writing style.

Many people rely on the consistent, high-quality lines you can get only from a mechanical pencil in their daily work. Students might use them to sketch in art class or work through math formulas, while professionals might draft floorplans or take notes during meetings. Whatever the case, an excellent mechanical pencil can be a great way to round out your carry. In this guide, we’ve put together some of the best mechanical pencils you can find that would make a perfect addition to any EDC setup.

The post Find Your Best Pocket Notebook for Everyday Carry in 2024 appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>

It’s hard to beat carrying a notebook to jot down important information and agenda items quickly. In this digital age, it’s too easy to think that a phone can do it all, but a physical notebook doesn’t need a charged battery to work; it only needs a working pencil or pen. You don’t have to fiddle with face unlock or passwords, and unless your phone comes with a stylus, you’ll need to enter it all using a virtual keyboard on the screen.

An excellent everyday carry notebook can let you jot down notes quicker and faster than with a cell phone. Writing things down in a notebook can also help you retain the information you’re putting down, which is a big step from tossing important information down a digital black hole to be forgotten on some cloud service you will forget about in a few hours.

Whether you’re looking for a commonplace book with everything you want to remember and think about or just a small pocket notebook for the essentials, there are many options to look at and consider for your everyday carry. In this guide, we’ll explain all the benefits of carrying a pocket notebook for daily use, give you some strategies, and review some of our favorite picks for the best notebooks in this category in 2024.

The Benefits of a Pocket Notebook

A pocket notebook is your repository for what’s vital in your life. From remembering phone numbers to keeping on top of your appointments to documenting the ins and outs of your life, you can do it all with a good everyday carry pocket notebook. While you can use your cell phone to do many of the same tasks, writing things down in a notebook is faster and more convenient. A pocket notebook doesn’t need a distracting internet connection to work, and you can keep on using it when the power is out and your batteries run dry. There’s no password needed to unlock a notebook, and instead of finding the right app, you only have to use your favorite pen or pencil and get suitable to the task at hand. Plus, writing on paper can feel more satisfying in practice than swiping or typing on a virtual glass keyboard with zero feedback. Writing engages you more than a cell phone; it can help you retain and act on that information in the future instead of forgetting it in your digital data trove.

How to Maximize Your Pocket Notebook Use

Everyone has their own system for note-taking, but a few pointers can help you get started on the right path. One way is to dedicate the first page or so of a notebook to a table of contents or quick reference list that can help you locate things more profound in the pages. Writing as neat as possible will also help you recall the information in the notebook more quickly, and ensuring you add important dates, phone numbers, and appointments legibly and consistently can help you maximize the value you get from having an everyday carry pocket notebook.

You could also learn shorthand, which will let you write faster in high-stress situations. Plus, with the decline of that skill in the modern day, shorthand can act as a bit of security through obscurity in case someone casually rifles through your notebook while you’re away.

Top Pocket Notebooks for Everyday Carry in 2024

The Best Overall Pocket Notebook: Midori Traveler’s Notebook [Buy]
The Best Pocket Notebook on a Budget: Field Notes Expedition [Buy]
The Most Premium Pocket Notebook: Hobonichi Techo Weeks [Buy]
The Best Pocket Notebook for the Outdoors: Rite in the Rain Top Spiral [Buy]
The Best Pocket Notebook for Fountain Pens: Apica Premium C.D. [Buy]

The Best Overall Pocket Notebook: Midori Traveler’s Notebook

The venerable Midori Traveler’s Notebook is our pick for the best overall pocket notebook. When picking out the right kind of notebook for everyday carry, it’s easy to focus solely on the paper inside. The Japanese Midori paper included with the Traveler’s Notebook is some of the best you can write with, primarily if you use water-based inks or fountain pens. But the Traveler’s Notebook is more than that because it also features a durable cowhide leather cover that accepts modular compact notebook paper refills of the same size. So, unlike spiral-bound school notebooks or smaller everyday carry notebooks that are stitched or glued shut, you can swap out the notebook refill once you run out of pages.

You can even use third-party notebook refills if the Midori paper isn’t to your liking or you have trouble sourcing it here in the United States. Along the way, the leather notebook cover will patina with age and the marks of daily use, making the Midori Traveler’s Notebook a buy-it-for-life pocket notebook so long as you don’t leave it behind on some travel adventure in the future.

The Best Pocket Notebook on a Budget: Field Notes Expedition

The Field Notes Expedition is a happy medium in the pocket notebook space, as it provides three practical 48-page dot-graph notebooks at a reasonable price. The Field Notes Expedition is also a quality notebook, not a cut-rate dollar store deal. Field Notes prints and manufactures each notebook here in the United States, and they source from local Midwest artisans to get their waterproof 84 GSM Yupo synthetic body paper. The paper is also tearproof, making this a notebook you don’t have to worry about getting wet in the rain or out in the great outdoors. You can opt to carry one of the three notebooks at a time or dedicate a notebook for different kinds of notes or different parts of your everyday carry loadout.

The Most Premium Pocket Notebook: Hobonichi Techo Weeks

The Hobonichi Techno is one of the community’s favorite planner notebooks, but the Weeks version stands apart both for its different, slimmer profile and its focus on providing a weekly view of your upcoming appointments and engagements. The Weeks is noticeably slimmer and taller than the standard A5 and A6 Hobonichi Techno planner, and it’s the same size as a Japanese checkbook. While you’re probably not carrying one of those around, it does mean that it can fit in more pockets than not.

Most of the page spreads in the Weeks are dedicated to showing you each week with the days on one side and a dedicated note-taking space on the other. There’s a monthly view and additional reference material; the blank grid dot area allows for general notes. This is my pocket notebook calendar because it works better than the myriad of cloud app calendars on my phone that I ignore because of notification fatigue. If you want to write more notes than the Weeks provides, there’s also a Mega version of this notebook, which has more fountain-pen-friendly paper for your convenience.

The Best Pocket Notebook for the Outdoors: Rite in the Rain Top Spiral

Rite in the Rain’s durable top spiral notebooks are trusted by first responders, outdoor enthusiasts, and military users to provide a weatherproof writing surface to plan operations and make critical observations without the risk of the paper disintegrating after getting wet. The top spiral is also made to a higher standard, so it won’t bend or twist out of position like the old-style reporter’s notebooks you might be used to. The Polydura notebook cover material is tough but flexible, so it won’t be uncomfortable in your pockets, especially if you carry a pocket notebook at the rear. The all-weather paper is entirely wood-based, so it’s completely recyclable and much friendlier to the environment when you’re done using it. While the waterproof paper makes it a challenge if you prefer water-based ink pens and fountain pens, it handles ballpoint and pencil lead just fine.

The Best Pocket Notebook for Fountain Pens: Apica Premium C.D.

Apica notebooks are especially friendly for anyone who carries a fountain pen in their everyday carry. The company has been making these notebooks since the start of the last century when everyone used fountain pens. And while they’re more prevalent in Japan than elsewhere, plenty of everyday carry stationery aficionados love using fountain pens. And even if you don’t carry that kind of pen, the special silky smooth paper is a joy to handle and use even with ballpoints, gel pens, or pencils.

The acid-free Japanese paper each notebook comes with can handle the wettest fountain pen inks without smearing, feathering, or bleeding through the page, as you might experience on pocket notebooks that do not have fountain pen users in mind. One thing to note: the Apica notebooks are functionally the equivalent of the school composition notebook in the United States, except with much higher quality paper.

Our Other Recommendations

Stalogy Editor’s Series 365Days A6: If you want to carry a pocket notebook planner but are not a fan of highly structured calendar pages that become useless if you don’t use them throughout the year, the Stalogy Editor’s Series 365 A6 pocket notebook is a great choice. This pocket notebook can operate as your chosen calendar because you can configure the grid pages to show any time you want. You can also use the notations at the top to denote days and months of the year. You can also forego using those features entirely and just use the Staology 365 as a regular notebook; the choice is all yours. [Buy $13.45]

Maruman Mnemosyne N192 B7: The B7 size of this compact lined notebook gives you 50 sheets of white acid-free 68gsm paper in a compact spiral-bound package that doesn’t take up a lot of space in your pocket and is amazing to write on. Another stand-out feature of this Maruman notebook is that each page features micro-perforations, making it easy to neatly tear out pages for handing out to others or for quick reference later. [Buy $4.98]

MUJI Passport Memo: The MUJI Passport Memo provides a passport-sized notebook that can fit in passport wallets and your pocket. They make great companion notebooks as you travel and are great for quick notes on the go without taking up too much space. Each color of the notebook denotes the kind of ruling (or lack of it) inside, with my favorite being the red one, which is blank. While they’ve been more challenging in the United States as Muji has pulled back from the market, you can still find it from third-party retailers when they have them in stock. [Buy $11]

Moleskine Cahier Pocket: The Moleskine Cahier Pocket notebook is many an everyday carry stationery enthusiast’s first foray into quality paper. It’s a durable ruled notebook with sturdy cardboard paper covers and a heavy-duty stitched spine. Because you can write on the notebook itself, it’s easy to label the notebook based on its contents, and you can refer to those marks later if you keep them around after you fill them with notes. One thing to note, however, is that Moleskine paper tends to feather and bleed when you use fountain pens, but users of other writing tools will have a lot to love when they carry a Moleskine notebook in their pocket. [Buy $14.81]

LEUCHTTURM1917 Hardcover Pocket: If you’re tired of having the cover of your pocket notebook rip, bend, or wrinkle after daily use, the LEUCHTTURM1917 pocket notebook has a hard cover that will stand up to the test of time. This will, of course, make it far more rigid compared to the other notebooks on this list, but if you’re willing to pay the price of having a more inflexible notebook in your pocket, you might just be able to keep at it with this notebook for longer than something made to less exacting standards. What to Consider When Choosing a Pocket Notebook

With the wide range of pocket notebooks available for everyday carry, there are many things to consider when adding one to your ensemble. We’ll review some essential considerations, like size, paper quality, binding, rules, materials, and price. There’s likely not a perfect notebook that will hit everything you need, but being armed with the knowledge of what’s out will get you a head start on your search for the best pocket notebook for you.

Size and Portability

To be a good pocket notebook for everyday carry, it has to fit in your pockets. It would be easy to leave it there, but you should also consider the space the rest of your everyday carry takes if you’re dedicated to pocket-only carry. You can opt for more “pocketable” notebooks instead that are slightly larger (beyond A5 size) than what you can manage, but then you’ll need to consider how you’ll carry that notebook around. A notebook that has to be in a giant bag might be less portable in your eyes, and you’ll end up either not using it or leaving it at home when you forget it in the wrong bag.

Paper Quality

If you’re just entering the stationery enthusiast space, it might be challenging to appreciate what good quality paper can do for you entirely. However, each notebook we discuss in this guide has much better paper than the college rule and composition notebooks you might be used to from your time at school. This higher quality paper will also feel much more likable and be an intangible plus to carrying a quality everyday pocket notebook.

When you are more particular about high-quality pens, you will fully benefit from good paper, especially if you carry a fountain pen regularly. The water-based inks of fountain pens have a hard time on poor quality paper that’s either too porous so the ink bleeds through and smears or too scratchy, giving strange feedback as you write that makes it unpleasant to use. Another consideration is the “weight” of the paper and how it relates to quality. This weight is often expressed in grams per square meter (gsm); strictly speaking, a higher number means more heavy-duty paper. While this might mean a sturdier paper, quality is a bit more than just the thickness or durability. You have to consider the color, ink-bearing capability, and whether it has acid or not for long-term archival, among many other factors that will be highly personal at the end of the day.

Binding Type

A notebook is a paper collection bound to be more beneficial than carrying around a stack of index cards or loose-leaf sheets. How it’s bound can dictate how you use the notebook and its durability. The common ways a pocket notebook can be bound include the standard spiral bound style, which uses metal wire through holes to hold the paper into place. These benefit from being easy to lie flat and remove individual sheets compared to the other binding styles, even if the pages are not perforated, to ease the process.

More traditional book-style bindings follow, with glue binding and stitched binding being common. These have a similar opening and closing experience as a small pamphlet or paperback book and offer more rigidity. The downside of this style is that you compromise the integrity of the overall binding of the pocket notebook once you start ripping pages out. Stapled notebooks function like notepads, but the ones made for everyday carry tend to have higher quality paper and more durable stapling to stand up to daily pocket carry. Completely modular notebooks like the Traveler’s Notebook or ring binder styles are made accessible to swap new paper in and out as you need, but they can be more flimsy than perfect bound or switched book-style spiral notebooks in the process.

Ruling Type

How the pocket notebook pages are designed profoundly influences your use. If you write in dense paragraphs, traditional line-ruled paper will work best to keep everything organized and help you maximize the space on the page. Technical drawing and math users might prefer grid-style paper because it helps structure work better, especially if you make tables and graphs regularly. An in-between style is dot-graph paper, which gives you the ability to draw the structured squares when you need it but otherwise keep the page less cluttered. An utterly blank notebook gives you complete freedom, and it’s the best for free-form notes and drawings. This style might work best for you if you also like to write bigger than most college and even wide-ruled papers.

Another consideration is whether a notebook has calendars for days, weeks, and months. If a notebook is primarily made up of those pre-defined spaces, it might limit the freeform note-taking potential of it. You should choose the pocket notebook with the features and design that you

Cover Material

The cover material of a notebook affects its overall durability and your satisfaction with bringing it along for the ride. The most basic pocket notebooks have paper covers, which keep the weight down but are subject to ripping or bending during use. Paper covers will also not handle getting wet, and alternatives such as leather and polymer will not be able to handle it. Leather covers offer traditional quality and a nice feel in your hand. Whether you like that they might scratch and patina over time is up to you. Polymer covers offer some of the best resistance to getting wet but tend to be more rigid in your pocket, making the experience potentially uncomfortable. Polymer covers can also feel a bit cheap compared to other alternatives, but that’s often a matter of perception versus reality, as plenty of excellent everyday carry pocket notebooks feature that design element.

Price

Pocket notebooks tend to be relatively affordable, but nearly everything on this list will be far more expensive than more generic stationery store school notebooks. For the increased price of a quality everyday carry pocket notebook, you get higher quality paper that can handle things like writing with fountain pens. They tend to have archival quality paper that won’t fade or yellow with time, which is essential if you’re writing notes or thoughts down for the years to come.

FAQs

What is the best notebook size for a pocket?

A5- and A6-sized notebooks are about 4” tall and make the best pocket notebook size. You’re not going to want to exceed your pocket size to keep things the right size, but carrying a notebook that might fit in a jeans back pocket might not work for the days when you’re wearing something else.

Should I carry a pocket notebook?

You should carry a pocket notebook because of the convenience of quickly writing essential things down without fiddling with technology. Using a pocket notebook might be more helpful in remembering and retaining the information you write down.

What are the tiny notebooks called?

The tiny notebooks are called pocket notebooks. They can also be considered micro-sized notebooks and mini-notebooks. Some spiral notebooks of this size are sometimes called reporters or evidence books from law enforcement.

What do you write in your EDC notebook?

What you choose to write in your pocket notebook is entirely up to you. For something this small, important dates, appointments, phone numbers, addresses, and quick math are some of the best use cases for carrying a pocket notebook.

Are there environmentally friendly options for pocket notebooks?

Some environmentally friendly pocket notebooks use recycled paper and post-consumer materials to create a more sustainable everyday carry experience. Some notebooks also feature a modular and replaceable feature that means you can keep using the notebook and swap out the pages instead of buying an entirely new product when you’re done.

How long does an average pocket notebook last with daily use?

Assuming your pocket notebook has 50 pages, you can dedicate a page daily to your essential writing. That will give you more than a month of use, but your mileage may vary.

Are there waterproof or weatherproof pocket notebooks available?

Rite in the Rain makes some of the best waterproof and weatherproof pocket notebooks, and we suggest one in our guide. They feature highly water-repellent paper, and the binding and covers match the weather.

Can a digital note-taking app replace a physical pocket notebook?

If you can stay dedicated and use it, a digital note-taking app might replace the functions of a physical pocket notebook. We submit that having a physical notebook has benefits like no internet connection or power to work. Physical notebooks are cheaper than a thousand-dollar cell phone, but your mileage may vary.

In this week’s round-up: Tactile Turn releases their icy seasonal pen, aroundsquare’s January drop includes an “anti puzzle,” our Best Flashlight awardee at SHOT Show 2024 the Nitecore EDC35, CRKT’s Mihacha automatic hides a secret in its scales, and Article One and Mission Workshop team up to create a stylish pair of technical sunnies.

Tactile Turn Scales New Heights With Their Seasonal Release Pen, the Icefall

Tactile Turn’s latest seasonal release pen is the Icefall, named after the Khumbu Icefall on the route to the top of Mount Everest. Functionally, the Icefall indicates Tactile’s increasing mastery of using Cerakote to add a unique visual look to their precision-machined pens. On the Icefall, Tactile has added an ice-like design using Cerakote to their metal Side Click pens. There’s also an optional titanium Damascus pen clip if the ice-blue Cerakoted clip doesn’t do it for you. Functionally, the Cerakote finish adds additional durability and scratch resistance to the Side Click pen, which you can enjoy along with the satisfying clicky mechanism and reliable pen refill used inside.

The best part about the Icefall is that, like Tactile Turn’s other seasonal releases, you only have a limited amount of time to order it. All you have to do is order the Icefall anytime on Tactile Turn’s website before March 28. This approach is an excellent change of pace with the increasing hype around limited releases lately, and it ensures that everyone who wants an Icefall can get one. Whether rounding out a completionist set of Tactile Turn’s seasonal releases or picking this up as your first, the Icefall is a great pen to add to your everyday carry.

Nitecore’s Latest EDC35 Flashlight Brightens Every Adventure with 5,000 Lumens

As our pick to win Best Flashlight at SHOT Show 2024, the EDC35 is a tactical pocket powerhouse. It shares a lot of characteristics with its smaller brother the EDC33, including custom knurling on the body, a physical lockout switch, and a rotating tail that hides a USB-C charging port for its built-in 6,000mAh battery.

The big difference is with the larger head, which uses an upgraded NiteLab UHi 40 MAX LED from the UHi 20 in the EDC33 that lets it output a more significant 5,000 lumens up to 601 yards on max output, which includes its trademark “Lumin Shield” burst mode. At under 5” and a still-pocketable 6.28 oz, the EDC35 is the perfect upgrade pair to the EDC33 and still a great pick in the 2024 rectangular flashlight meta.

CRKT’s Michaca Automatic Knife Is A Cut Above the Rest

The Michaca is CRKT’s brand-new automatic knife designed by expert knifemaker Phillip Booth. The name Michaca is a combination of Phillip’s hometown of Ithaca and his home state, Michigan. It sports a 3.30” drop point blade made from CPM MagnaCut steel with a bead blast finish, while the natural G10 handle offers excellent grip and features Booth’s signature stripe.

To release the knife, there isn’t a button or switch. Instead, it uses the scales as a release. But not your typical scale release where you push it up by its pivot, the Michaca actuates by the tail end of the knife. You can slide the scale forward using your fingers or the pad of your palm, and it will automatically deploy the blade. It also comes with a generous deep carry pocket clip, and overall, we think this is a new fun auto to add to your collection.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

If you’re the kind of person who needs Nitro Cold Brew and lots of it, we’ve got just the thing for your everyday carry. While the Tactile Turn Nitro Seasonal Release won’t automatically make and dispense coffee for you, it does celebrate our shared love for coffee, the drink that makes the world go round.

It starts with their Side Click Titanium body, with a rich dark brown Cerakote finish and cream-colored hardware that evokes a dark brew and the light splash of milk you get in a good latte. And as masterfully crafted as latte artwork, a lightning bolt mug design is precision engraved on the pocket clip. The Nitro Seasonal Release is also available in Tactile’s Slim Click profile if you prefer a slimmer pen. Both versions come in Standard, Short, and Mini lengths to meet your needs. Remember that the Parker-style refills work on Standard and Short, but the Mini uses the exclusive but smooth-writing Pilot G2 mini refills.

Like all Tactile Seasonal Releases, you have a limited time to order the pen, but you’re good to go as long as you order before December 31st. Pull two big shots and send it in by tonight because the Tactile Nitro Side Click Seasonal Pen is your perfect companion for your next trip to the coffeehouse.

What we like: Aside from the playful coffee lover’s aspect of this pen, the golden brown Cerakote body of the Nitro is excellently crafted with undertones that make it more than just a paint job.

What to watch out for: Tactile has also released an optional ceramic Diner Mug and a coffee bag of premium beans from Voltage Coffee Project in Decatur, Texas. It’s currently sold out, but there will be a second batch coming soon that you can look out for.

Final verdict: You don’t have to like coffee to like this pen, but it doesn’t hurt. Tactile Seasonal Releases continue to deliver, and this pen is an excellent opportunity during the holiday gift season to spruce up someone’s everyday carry, especially if it’s for yourself.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

I love the sturdiness and feeling of quality metal mechanical pencils brought to the table, but the added weight sometimes means the pencil stays at my desk. And that’s a shame because mechanical pencils are the best option when doing work like quick math and temporary note-taking. The Titanium DraftTitan Mechanical Pencil by Maratac changes everything with a durable and beautiful spiral titanium body that’s only 1 oz.

The Grade 5 titanium body of the DraftTitan isn’t just for looks: it’s precision-machined and designed to reduce the overall weight of the pencil in your hand. This slim, sleek, and compact everyday carry writing implement measures 6” long, and it has a titanium clip that acts as a rolling stop for the pencil on your desk.

With its 2mm graphite core and smooth rear click activation, the DraftTitan is a joy to use. It comes with 12 spare refills for added convenience. Whether a mechanical pencil is your primary writing tool or backup, this new CountyComm exclusive mechanical pencil is a solid option for your next gear pickup.

What we like: The spiral titanium body lends an elegant, minimal look to the pencil, helping reduce its weight to just a single ounce. And at under 40 dollars as of this writing, it’s also great value for money.

What to watch out for: The Titanium DraftTitan Mechanical Pencil is only available in a serialized run of 1000 pencils at CountyComm. We can’t guarantee they’ll reappear, so if you want one for yourself, you should act sooner rather than later.

Final verdict: You get a quality everyday carry mechanical pencil when you opt for a Titanium DraftTitan Pencil made by Maratac for CountyComm. It’s one of the best options for new metal mechanical pencil pickups today.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

We’ve watched Tactile Turn grow and evolve as a penmaking company for a really long time, and their position at the top of the EDC pen game is warranted, to say the very least. And while the brand may be more known for their use of premium materials and limited edition, super-exotic releases, they haven’t forgotten to brush up on and set their fundamentals in stone—or in this case, aluminum.

In a surprise drop, Tactile have released a refreshed line of anodized aluminum Bolt Action Pens in their traditional lineup of three sizes in three colors (to start). They’ve used aluminum in their earliest models like the Mover before focusing primarily on titanium, but these come with a twist. The new bodies come in 7075 aluminum, which is significantly harder and stronger than the more common 6061 alloy in most EDC gear. It’s not as premium or popular as titanium, but it has great benefits in addition to its durability, including affordability, ease of machining, and vibrancy when anodized, as can be seen with the orange and green of this release. For some context, 7075 is what’s used in incredibly hard-use butterfly knives and premium custom flashlights, so it’s nothing to scoff at.

But titanium enthusiasts shouldn’t worry, as the internal sliding mechanism and the bolt are still titanium, and the bolt can be upgraded to titanium Damascus like the rest of Tactile’s offerings. And while priced lower, there’s nothing low-quality about these pens as they still carry the hallmarks of Tactile’s machining prowess and design, including near-invisible tip and tail seams, a gapless inner bolt, and the minimal machined clip.

Speaking of offerings, for those unfamiliar, all of Tactile’s pens are available in three sizes to match preferences of both length and refill, so those interested in dipping their toes into some of the best machined pens they can buy can find the perfect pen to suit all their writing needs.

What we like: We love the use of 7075 aluminum for EDC as it provides exceptional material benefits while still keeping the price down for products. And while $79 is still pricey for pens, it offers a more affordable entry point into Tactile’s catalog, which until now started at $99.

What to watch out for: This release is in between a general offering and a limited edition from Tactile, so there’s no guarantee they’ll be restocking them once they run out. If you’re on the fence about picking one up, don’t miss this opportunity if you’re in a position to grab one!

Final verdict: We’re all in for aluminum.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

You never truly realize how much of an impact a good pen can have on you until you start using one, and for the uninitiated, the Bastion G-10 Bolt Action Pen is unlike any other pen you’ve ever used. Not only is it the lightest pen ever made by Bastion, weighing only 0.65oz (roughly the weight of a standard AA battery), but it’s also made from high-grade G-10 material, known for its strength, durability, and resistance to moisture, chemicals, and temperature changes, and a material more often found on hard-use knives, not pens.

The G-10 Bolt Action Pen features a unique bolt action mechanism that mimics the action of a rifle. To extend or retract the pen tip, slide the bolt up or down with your thumb. It’s a fairly addicting mechanism to play around with, but it also provides a secure lock that prevents the pen from accidentally opening or closing in your pocket or bag.

The design of the G-10 Bolt Action Pen is sleek and elegant, with the G-10 material providing a textured surface that gives it a refined look and feel. The texture also improves your grip on the pen, making it easier to write with precision and control. This version of Bastion’s signature pen comes in black and gray, both of which are neutral and versatile enough to match any outfit or occasion. Its built-in pocket clip lets you attach it to your shirt, jacket, or notebook for easy access.

What we like: G-10 isn’t a material you often see on pens, so appearing on an enthusiast pen is a welcome sight. It’s a new way to experience an everyday writing essential if you’ve only ever felt it on your knife’s handles.

What to watch out for: The Bastion G-10 Bolt Action Pen has an SRP of $125, which could be difficult to swallow for some. If you act soon, you might still catch Bastion’s limited-time offer of $98. Of course, being their flagship model, Bastion offers the pen in many other varieties, including more affordable options.

Final verdict: A unique spin on a popular material that gives a whole new writing experience to your daily jotter.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The venerable fountain pen holds a special place in many an EDC stationery enthusiast’s heart. Aside from being a unique writing tool that stands out from the disposable ball pens everyone else uses, there are a lot of advantages when you choose a fountain pen, especially when it’s well-designed. That’s why Wingback took their time developing and precision machining a fountain pen with smooth writing sessions in mind.

The Wingback Fountain Pen features a wide-diameter barrel with a diamond-knurled grip formed into its metal body. The wide barrel allows you to establish a firm and comfortable grip on the pen. It also helps give the Wingback Fountain Pen more weight in your hand than a plastic disposable pen, which makes for a satisfying feel of quality in your hands.

Whether you pick between the stainless steel, raw brass, titanium, or tungsten-carbide-coated black steel version of the Wingback Fountain Pen, you get a premium Bock iridium fountain pen nib at the tip. Iridium is an upgrade from the standard stainless steel nib and offers more durability when compared to more opulent nibs made of gold. You can also choose the nib size for your pen, from extra fine to double broad, matching your style preferences to the smallest detail.

It’s also easy to use the ink with the pen. It works with cartridges, but the benefit of Wingback’s experience with precision metal machining means that you can use the pen’s body to contain a reservoir of ink using the eyedropper method. Seals built into the metal pen prevent the ink from escaping and making a huge mess.

What we like: One of the benefits of Wingback releasing this pen via Kickstarter is that you get a custom order. You can have Wingbacklaser engrave up to 50 characters of your choice along the length of the pen’s metal barrel to personalize it.

What to watch out for: Standard crowdfunding disclaimer here, so just be aware of how pledging on Kickstarter works. Pursuing a slim and sleek design also means the Wingback Fountain Pen forgoes a pocket clip, meaning the pen does not have a roll stop, so you have to ensure it doesn’t fall off your writing desk.

Final verdict: Wingback is a quality EDC writing implement manufacturer, and they have successfully delivered on Kickstarter before. If you’re willing to wait a bit to get a quality pen that stands out from the crowd, secure a Wingback Fountain Pen for yourself at the link below.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

When space is at a premium in your pockets, scratching up your precious everyday carry pens against your keys and other gear can feel inevitable. But if you find a protective sleeve for your EDC pens, you can protect them against undue wear and tear, especially if you carry a delicate fountain pen with a unique design. A protective sleeve is less bulky than a pen roll or a tech pouch, letting you keep things slim in your EDC.

That’s why Esterbrook Pen has made their new Pocket Canvas Sleeve. It features a durable yet attractive construction that protects your writing implements when you’re on the move. At almost 6” in length, the sleeve can fit one to two pens in its protective pouch. The durable canvas material will protect your delicate pens and pencils from being damaged when rubbing against aluminum flashlights, steel knives, and whatever metal is on your keys.

It comes in three beautiful colors: green, tan, and blue. The available colors let you pick the proper accent that matches or contrasts your gear and style.

What we like: The Esterbrook Pen Pocket Canvas Sleeve‘s attractive yet practical and durable design protects your gear without added bulk.

What to watch out for: If you EDC more than one or two pens, you will need multiple sleeves or a dedicated pocket caddy or pouch that fits your needs more appropriately.

Final verdict: If you EDC delicate and expensive fountain and pocket pens or pencils, adding a protective sleeve like the Pocket Canvas Sleeve from Esterbrook Pen is worth considering.
