While the Seiko 5 series line of watches might be priced for value, it doesn’t mean they’re built cheap. To be included in this incredibly valued line of watches, each must have an automatic movement, 20M water resistance, a recessed crown, durable case and bracelet, and a day/date feature. The Seiko SNK803 is no exception. All of the features are packed into a 37mm stainless steel case with a Hardlex mineral glass crystal. This khaki-colored version is ideal for the warmer months, whether you’re out and about, or just want something nice and light on your wrist in the office.

The folks at BigIDesign are known for their streamlined pocket tools, and of course, pens. The Ti Arto EDC is an updated (and improved) version of their original Ti Arto pen that accepted over 200 different pen refills. This updated version is lighter-weight, easier to use, and adjusts to the length of various refills with a simple twist.

The Ti Arto EDC takes into consideration the feedback that BigiDesign received on their last pen. The result is a more straightforward yet more functional version that seamlessly adapts to accept over 750 refills (yes, you read that right) without any play in the tip of the pen. The Arto EDC achieves this thanks to the clutch mechanism in the grip, coupled with the screw-to-adjust body that lengthens or shortens depending on how you twist it. When capped, the pen hovers between 4.4” and 5.2”, depending on the refill inside. It’s small enough to fit in your pocket easily and stays in there securely thanks to the deep pocket carry clip.

The pen is crafted from grade 5 titanium alloy and is available in three different finishes. You can pick one up in stonewashed titanium, midnight black, or raw machined titanium. No matter what your preferred refill in, the Ti Arto EDC has you covered.

So you’re thinking about adding a new watch to your EDC, but not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered. Today, we’re looking at some of the best dive watches on the market that are sure to fit in with the rest of your carry. You’ll learn a bit about dive watches, why they’re great for everyday carry, and of course, some excellent options suited to a wide range of styles and budgets. Let’s dig in.

It may seem a bit overwhelming if you’re new to the world of watches. There are dozens of features, watch styles, and endless specs to pay attention to. Today’s guide focuses strictly on dive watches. The ISO 6425 standard defines dive watches:

 • The watch should have a unidirectional rotating bezel to track elapsed time
 • Clearly distinguishable minute markers on the dial
 • Visibility in total darkness (thanks to lume)
 • A lumed seconds hand to show that the watch is running in total darkness
 • Magnetic resistance, shock resistance, chemical resistance, and of course 200m of water resistance.

All of these features make for a robust, durable, and accurate watch, whether above or under the surface.

With the discontinuation of the ever-popular SKX line of dive watches, and Seiko’s “5 Sports” lineup not being true divers, it’s no surprise that Seiko would come out with a new and exciting dive watch. Enter the SPB143, a diver inspired by Seiko’s first dive watch from the 1960s, the 62MAS. Unlike its vintage counterpart, there’s nothing fragile about this excellent dive watch. Sporting a perfectly sized 40.5mm stainless steel case with brushed finishing and polished accents, the SPB143 is also treated with Seiko’s proprietary DiaShield coating, which is highly resistant to scratches. The dial is a beautiful sunburst gray with chunky applied indices that glow bright green in the dark. Protecting the dial is a dual-domed sapphire crystal with AR coating on the inner surface for supreme legibility. Inside the watch, Seiko’s own 6R35 movement keeps the time with an impressive 70 hours of power reserve. The SPB is a handsome watch that’s a worthy successor to the SKX lineup and looks great on the steel bracelet or your choice of 20mm NATO strap.

If you’re in the market for a smaller-sized dive watch, Marathon’s MSAR is an excellent option for your EDC. Designed in Canada and manufactured in Switzerland, Marathon’s watches are designed and built to live on the wrists of military personnel worldwide. Their feature-set is impressive, as they must withstand the rigors of search and rescue missions. The 36mm 316L stainless steel case houses a self-winding automatic movement. On the dial, you’ll find tritium gas tubes, small vials of radioactive gas that give off a glow without being exposed to light. There’s a highly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protecting the dial that’s surrounded by a chunky rotating timing bezel. A generously-sized knurled crown makes setting the time an easy task on the right side of the case. With 300M of water resistance and tank-like construction, the MSAR is an excellent choice for those who aren’t afraid of a few bumps and knicks. The I.N.O.X. line of watches from Victorinox (the same company that makes the classic Swiss Army Knife) are put through a series of rigorous tests before coming to market. They freeze them, drop them, vibrate them—you name it. While some of these tests may be over the top, they ensure that the watch on your wrist is built to withstand the daily wear and tear (and then some) you can throw at it. The I.N.O.X. Professional Diver is rendered in a lightweight and durable 45mm titanium case with some serious wrist presence. A highly legible dial is treated with Swiss Super-LumiNova on the hour markers and hands so that you can see the time in even the darkest conditions. The watch ships on a woven paracord strap that you can unwrap and use should you find yourself in a sticky situation.

When fully wound, the automatic movement will stay running for 80 hours, nearly double the industry standard. You’ll also get a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal up top that protects the handsome blue dial underneath. What is a Divers Watch?

A dive watch is a purpose-built tool that meets the ISO 6425 standard defined above. The most standout feature of a dive watch is the rotating bezel present on all of them. Surrounding the dial, you’ll find a rotating piece that tracks elapsed time. When diving, it’s crucial to know how long you’ve been underwater, especially when the air you’re carrying only lasts for a set amount of time. Dive watches stand out from regular watches thanks to their more robust construction and durable materials. If a watch can stand up to the pressures of the deep and be banged into rocks underwater, there’s a good chance it’s good to go for your daily tasks.

Are Divers Watches Fully Waterproof?

“Fully waterproof” is a slippery, winding road to go down. Being “waterproof” means that in no way will water ever enter into something. That’s just not the case with dive watches. Good news, though–they are built to withstand depths far beyond what the human body can endure. You might see arguments over whether or not a watch is a “true dive watch,” and usually, that argument comes down to water resistance. Anything below the ISO-mandated 200M of water resistance technically isn’t a true dive watch, and even though you may see 50 meters on a dial, it doesn’t really mean what it says.

When testing water resistance, the watch in question usually undergoes a static test, meaning the watch is in still water and not moving around. In actual use case scenarios, the movement of your wrist through the water will affect the watch’s water resistance. While you won’t find yourself 150 feet underwater with a 50M watch, you can do light swimming and surface water activities. 100M is suitable for more intense water sports like surfing or snorkeling, and 200M brings you a bit more resistance suitable for skin diving. When the word “DIVERS” comes into play, these watches are the real deal, with “DIVERS 100M, 200M, or 300M” being suitable for full-on scuba diving.

Features You Should Pay Attention To

There are a few key features that you should pay attention to when picking out your new EDC divers watch:

 • Accuracy: Mechanical watches are cool, but they typically aren’t as accurate as a quartz movement, unless you go way up market.

 • Legibility: A bold set of hands treated with luminous paint make for a highly legible experience, crucial when you depend on your watch to let you know how long you’ve been underwater.

 • Quality: Finishing and machining on the case not only make a dive watch look better on your wrist, but they’re also indicative of the overall quality of the watch.

 • Depth Rating: Keep in mind how deep your watch can go depending on what activities you plan on doing while wearing it.

 • Material: Different case and component materials affect how the watch will wear. For example, titanium will be much lighter on the wrist than steel.

 • Movement: Keep in mind that a high-quality automatic mechanical movement will require more maintenance than its quartz counterpart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do divers actually use dive watches?

Some divers still use dive watches, however, dive computers are more commonly used today.

What watch do real divers use?

Real divers use any watch that is ISO certified for diving. It must have a unidirectional bezel, luminous hands, and an automatic movement or quartz movement with low battery indication.

They are popular because they are durable, feature useful designs, and have a long history in the world of watches.

Why are dive watches black?

Dive watches are black because black is the most popular dial color, regardless of the style of the watch. Not all dive watches have to be black.

Even the most dependable gear wears down over time. Luckily, there’s something you can do about it. By following a regular maintenance routine, you’ll keep your EDC in working order and get the most out of your gear. To put it simply: take care of your EDC, and it’ll take care of you.

In this guide, we’ve made maintenance easy. Read on to learn how to keep your gear in tip-top shape for the rest of this new year, and to ensure they’re in it for the long run.

Knife Maintenance

 • Sharpening the Easy Way: Perhaps you’ve opened up one too many bags of ice melt, dulling your blade while exposing it to corrosive salts. Your blade could definitely use a touch up. The Spyderco Sharpmaker system brings a knife edge back from dangerously dull to razor sharp with just a few steps. The kit includes two sets of sharpening stones and an ergonomically designed base to get your blades sharp in a few minutes. Each set also includes a set of detailed illustrated instructions and a DVD if you still don’t feel confident with the process. BUY: Spyderco Sharpmaker on Amazon
 • Spruce Up Those Wooden Handles: Wood-handled knives look great, but that natural beauty can fade without proper care. Wood is prone to drying out, cracking, and wearing faster than the metal and plastic alternatives. Hit the handles with a light coat of mineral oil from time to time so they stay moisturized and crack-free. Just a few minutes of care can greatly extend the life of your favorite knife. BUY: Mineral Oil on Amazon
 • A Well-Oiled Machine: Folding knives are no doubt the most convenient type of knife to carry. Whether you carry a flipper or a lockback, all knives can benefit from a bit of CLP solution on the pivot. A good cleaning followed by a few drops of oil will keep your knife opening and closing smoothly and safely. If your blade is made of carbon steel, you can also add a light coating of oil to prevent the blade from rusting when not in use. BUY: CLP solution on Amazon

Wallet Maintenance

 • Remember to Moisturize: You should take extra care when working with natural materials, and leather is no exception. Not unlike wood, this organic material is prone to drying out, cracking, and wearing. Obenauf’s leather care oil is one of the most popular options for keeping leather goods smooth, moisturized, and protected. Use a clean cloth to apply a bit of oil to your wallet, knife sheath, boots, or any other leather you carry to protect it from the wear and tear of daily use. This odorless oil leaves leather looking like new and ready for carry. BUY: Leather Care Oil on Amazon

Bag and Jacket Maintenance

 • Stay Dry: Spring weather is usually unpredictable and more often than not, wet. Carrying a small packable rain jacket is a great way to stay dry. Over time, these jackets tend to lose their ability to shed water like when they were new. Hit your garment with a DWR (durable water repellent) restoring spray like these from Nixwax to keep the elements out. Cover your bases whether you’re touching up your hard or softshell apparel and equipment like tents and sleeping bags. BUY: Nikwax Hardshell Duo-Pack on Amazon / Nikwax Softshell Duo-Pack on Amazon

Watch Maintenance

 • Wrist Check: Watches have a tendency to get pretty dirty. They’re on your wrist constantly being exposed to almost everything that you touch. Give your watch a good, thorough cleaning, and maybe even replace the strap if it’s beginning to wear out. This spring bar tool from Bergeron makes it especially easy to remove the spring bar (the piece that holds on a strap or bracelet) for greater access to the case. Clean it up, change the battery, and pop on a new strap all with a little bit of help from this must-have tool for watch maintenance. Take things a step further by making sure to keep track of when your last professional service was. It’s always a good idea to know when the rubber gaskets, o-rings, and movement have been tuned up to ensure that your watch will keep ticking. BUY: Spring-bar Tool on Amazon

Flashlight Maintenance

 • Don’t Get Caught in the Dark: Just because the sun is out later and later doesn’t mean you should neglect your flashlight. If you pull yours out from the drawer after all this time and it doesn’t turn on, check the battery. Regular alkaline batteries can leak and corrode in your light over time. Consider making the switch from alkaline to rechargeable lithium ion batteries. They’re safer to store in your lights should they go unused for longer periods of time and can be recharged when they’re dead. We like the high capacity Panasonic Eneloops here at Everyday Carry. They’re reliable and last longer than their one-and-done counterparts. After a small initial investment in the batteries and charger, you’ll find it’s hard to go back to the standard. To keep your light in working order, also check the o-rings for dry rot and hit the threads with some silicone grease for smooth operation and some added protection. BUY: Eneloop AA/AAA Rechargeable Batteries on Amazon / Sanyo High-Discharge 18650 Batteries on Illumn

Pen Maintenance

 • Make Your Metal Like New Again: Carrying some brass or copper gear that’s loaded with patina? If the aged gear look isn’t for you, bring those tools back to a brilliant shine with some Maas metal polish. A clean cloth, a dab of polish, and little bit of elbow grease can have your metal gear looking as good as new. BUY: Maas Metal Polish on Amazon
 • Time for a Refill: Lots of EDC pens accept the ever-popular Parker-style refill, though sometimes the stock ink cartridge writes less-than-great. Blobby, skipping lines, and scratchy writing ruin the experience of putting a pen to paper. If your writing mostly takes place indoors, consider picking up some Parker Gel refills. They’re smooth, leave a crisp line on the page, and come in several vibrant colors. Need something more suited to hard use? Grab a pack of Fisher Space Pen refills. They’ll get you writing in the rain, underwater, and even in outer space (should you find yourself up there). BUY: Parker Gel Ink Refills on Amazon

Although laptops in the classroom are quickly becoming the norm, an EDCer stays prepared with a pen in pocket just in case. When it comes time to jot down notes, plan your schedule, or tackle some homework, having a pen you enjoy can help you ease back into the school year a little more smoothly. This year has seen some great updates for popular pens, so in this round-up we’re showcasing the best you can carry in and out of school.

Tactile Turn Bolt Action Pen (2019 Update)

Tactile Turn’s Bolt Action Pen (formerly the Slider and Glider) has undergone some pretty significant updates to both the look and design of the pen, resulting in a refined all-metal pen with a satisfying deployment mechanism. In conjunction with a stronger spring, the new bolt shape is faster, smoother, and more satisfying to click. They come in a variety of durable metals to stand up to EDC, all precision-machined to feature a uniquely tactile ribbed grip section for added control. You can pick one up in a variety of everyday carry-friendly metals in either a long (Pilot G2 style refills) or short size (Parker style refills).

Zebra F-701 (2019 Update)

The most budget-friendly EDC pen out there is now better than ever. For just around $7, you now get an entirely metal pen. Previously, the F-701 had a few key components made from plastic. Zebra took notice that people would often modify their pens to be entirely metal, and now offer it as the standard option in their line. The knurled grip, durable body, satisfying click mechanism, and low price tag are hard to beat. If you’re on a shoestring student budget, this is probably your best bet.

Moonman C2 Fountain Pen

A fountain pen might be a nice upgrade to your writing routine, especially if you find yourself taking page after page of notes. This new offering from Moonman is an eyedropper style pen, meaning you fill the entire body cavity of the pen with ink. When filled, it will hold over 1ml of ink. Paired with a fine nib, you can write for a very long time on a single fill. The clear body of the pen not only looks cool but it also lets you keep track of how much ink you’ve got left. Fountain pens require minimal pressure to write with, so you can help cut down on hand cramps too. The Moonman offers a lot for the price, making it an excellent entry into the fountain pen world.

Check It Out

Pilot G2 Limited

It’s hard to argue with the classic G2. Pilot’s most popular pen lays down a dark, silky line of gel ink that’s archival and waterproof once dry. We like the G2 Limited version because of the more premium feel of the body. The stock G2 is clear plastic and rubber, and the experience leaves something to be desired. On the Limited model, you’ll find a metallic body, sturdy clip, and beefed up rubber grip to ensure a comfortable writing session.

Pokka Pens 8-Pack

If you’re the type who shows up to class without a pen, the 8-pack of Pokka Pens might just be the solution for you. These tiny pocket pens extend when uncapped to a comfortable length to write with, but stay small when capped to go unnoticed in a pocket or bag. Since the pack comes with 8, you can leave a few in the bottom of your bag or in the dash of your car and always be prepared to write. Pokka Pens are available in a ton of different colors and patterns, perfect if you want to match the rest of your EDC.

Check It Out

Zebra Delguard Mechanical Pencil

Whether it be math or chemistry, you might not always want to write in pen. Zebra’s Deguard mechanical pencil is an excellent option if you find yourself reaching for lead instead of ink. This isn’t just a straightforward mechanical pencil though, there’s some interesting engineering that goes into the writing tip to keep your lead from breaking. A system of springs and collars inside of the body cushion the lead from breakage on two separate axis. At the end of the day, it provides a solid writing experience without the annoyance of broken lead.

Check It Out

Palomino Blackwing 602 12-pack

Palomino’s Blackwing 602 is appreciated far and wide by pencil aficionados (there are literally dozens of us) for its silky smooth writing experience. These pencils feature a smooth and firm graphite core that perfectly balances the darkness of the line on the page without burning through too much lead. Sharpening a wood pencil might not be ideal during class, but if you prepare with a few pre-sharpened Blackwings, the writing experience is hard to match.

Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto Multi Pen

Bring some color to your notes with Pilot’s Hi-Tec-C Coleto multipen. This slim pen body accepts four of Pilot’s Hi-Tec-C refills—a smooth gel pen that’s achieved a cult-like fandom throughout the stationery world. Having four colors of ink available at the click of a button makes it super easy to organize your notes while adding some visual flair. We like the Coleto since refills are readily available in a ton of different color options.

Unlike your classic multi-function Swiss Army Knife, a watch’s only job is telling the time. As such, it should do it in an efficient, reliable way while being durable enough to stand up to your day-to-day. That’s exactly what Victorinox’s new Fieldforce collection of stylish and rugged timepieces aims to do. Each watch features a superbly-finished 42mm stainless steel case, a reliable Swiss quartz movement, a day/date display, and the level of quality you’ve come to expect from Victorinox. Instead of resting on their laurels by reissuing an old watch, Victorinox completely revisited the design with a bunch of new features that you’ll appreciate day in and day out.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the Fieldforce when putting it on your wrist is the large, open, and highly legible dial. Its set of SuperLuminova-treated applied indices sit against a contrasting black dial for optimal legibility. The numerals are big, bold, and easy to read in day or night, thanks to the generous application of lume. Stepped sword hands for the hours and minutes tell the time, while a bright glossy red seconds hand is constantly ticking around the dial. At 12 o’clock, you’ll see the classic red shield Victorinox logo that’s well-proportioned so as to not clutter the dial. Further adding to the utility of the watch is a contrasting day/date display located at 3 o’clock. Running around the outer edge of the dial is a slim fixed bezel with a black insert denoting the minutes. The choice of putting this useful scale outside of the bezel does wonders for keeping legibility a top concern.

For a 42mm watch, the Fieldforce wears well on the wrist thanks to a slim profile. There’s a mix of brushed and high-polish finishes seen throughout the case and bracelet that adds a level of sophistication to a traditionally utilitarian watch. It’s available on either a premium leather strap or steel bracelet with polished center links, in several color ways, including deep black, rich blue, and bright white dials, all with the same black bezel surrounding it. If you’ve been looking for a watch that can pull double duty in both the field and the office, the Fieldforce makes an excellent candidate.

The best pen is the one with you, but if it’s the one you accidentally walked out of the doctor’s office with, you might want to up your game. You know the one: the cheapie, plastic ballpoint pen that’s uncomfortable to write with and disposable by design, doomed to the garbage bin once it’s out of ink. You could opt for a machined metal pen with that buy-it-for-life durability for EDC duty, but those can get spendy real fast. There is, however, one all-metal, tried-and-true clicky pen that doesn’t break the bank: the Zebra F-701. It’s been a crowd favorite for years, and after some more recent updates, it begs the question: should you still buy one in 2020?

{embed=”post:26737″}

Learn more about this EDC

Zebra’s F-701 is an all-metal clicky pen with a knurled grip, rigid steel body, and strong pocket clip. The click mechanism is nice and quiet to operate and demands a firm press – excellent if you don’t want it opening accidentally in your pocket. The stepped tip of the pen is designed to stay out of the way while you’re writing so you can get a clear view of what’s going onto the page. Inside, there’s a Zebra ballpoint refill that lays down a 0.8mm line with ease. The best part? It will only cost you a hair over five bucks. In the past, the F-701 was not made entirely of metal, so people would mod their pens with the click mechanism and hardware from the F-401 model. On our site, the F-701 is extremely popular and is carried by students, businessmen, EMTs, and more. It has universal appeal, and for good reason.

Is It Worth Buying One Today?

We can can say the Zebra F-701 is definitely still worth buying today. With the updated design, it’s the best it’s ever been. Zebra clearly took notice of their fans who would take the time and spend extra money to buy two pens and mod them into one. As a result, they now include the hardware from the F-401 on the F-701 as stock. For just over $5, an all-metal pen with a knurled grip section is an incredible bargain. You can even use Fisher Space Pen refills in the F-701 for the write-anywhere experience. If you don’t want to drop serious cash on a pen, but want something more substantial than a disposable, the F-701 is still the best option.

Other Options to Consider

Since the F-701 is a great bargain at an entry-level price point, your other options will likely run you more money. With that said, you get what you pay for, from different design language or materials all the way up to enthusiast-level features. Here are a few at some different price points to consider:

 • Up your game (just a little) – rOtring Rapidpro Ballpoint: rOtring is a German brand known for making rock-solid writing instruments. The all metal body adds some extra heft over the Zebra too. Another bonus is that it comes in a coated and slightly textured black finish – a perfect match for stealthy EDCs. (~$23)
 • A more robust option – The James Brand Benton Click Pen: The James Brand is a trusted name in EDC gear, and they’ve recently designed a pen. At $60, it falls somewhere in the middle of the premium EDC pen price range. It features a laser-etched grip, 304 stainless steel barrel, and a lanyard loop integrated into the click mechanism. You can snag one in raw stainless, black, or a pleasing shade of grey. ($60)
 • Pen nerds, rejoice – BigiDesign Ti Click EDC: If you’re looking for the ultimate custom writing experience, BigiDesign has you covered. Their pen is designed to seamlessly accept hundreds of different refills. The body extends to fit them, while the proprietary collet grip ensures that each refill will write without “tip wiggle”. On top of that, it’s machined from solid grade-5 titanium. ($100)

Have you carried the F-701? Did you feel the need to upgrade at all? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this EDC classic in the comments below.

The post Is the Maxpedition Falcon-II Worth It In 2019? appeared first on Everyday Carry.

]]>
Well over a decade ago, there weren’t very many options for a good EDC bag. Back in those days, Maxpedition made a name for themselves as a go-to choice for a sturdy, tactical bag. Gear enthusiasts often recommended the 18L Pygmy Falcon, 23L Falcon-II, and the larger 35L Falcon-III for their solid construction, top-notch materials at the time, and ample organizational features. Since their debut in 2003, Maxpedition’s goal was to create bags for law enforcement and military professionals that would stand up to the rigorous conditions in the field. But since then, the landscape and market for bags has drastically changed. Today, we’re taking a look back at the Maxpedition Falcon line to see if it has what it takes to be a worthwhile pick in 2019.

{embed=”post:18151″}

Learn more about this EDC

Maxpedition refers to the Falcon as their quintessential product: it’s “durable, ergonomic, and intelligently designed.” This tactical pack is crafted from 1050D Ballistic nylon as the base material. It’s then coated with Teflon to deflect water and dirt. You’ll find high tensile strength nylon webbing and thread throughout, with additional stitches reinforcing stress points. All of the internal seams are taped and finished for a refined, clean look that allows you to access your gear quickly and easily. Each of the zipper pulls are finished with paracord, so opening the beefy YKK zippers is a breeze. You’ll notice that the pack is covered in MOLLE-compatible webbing to attach extra gear and pouches. Inside the bag, there’s ample room for all of your gear. An admin pocket on the front of the bag provides even more organization. One of the standout features is that the bag is compressible when not loaded to capacity. If you’re carrying less gear (or even no gear at all), the straps on the side of the bag can cinch everything down to a manageable size.

The bag was (and still is) popular thanks to the construction, and tried-and-true reliability in the field. EDCers know Maxpedition for producing a bag that can take a beating without breaking the bank. The layout, size, and organization features in the Falcon appeal to a wide range of people and suit several different lifestyles and activities. Maxpedition’s Falcon is a tactical backpack done right.

Learn more about this EDC

While the Falcon line of bags had impressive specs at the time, there are many more options for EDC bags on the market right now, tactical or otherwise. Chances are, you can find a newer bag that can better serve your needs at around the ~$100 price point. While we can’t argue with the construction and quality of the bag, there are some things that sorely need an update. Some complain about the comfort level of the straps, while others don’t find the need for a waist strap on an everyday bag. There’s no dedicated place for a laptop either. You might also prefer a bag with similar functionality but less obviously tactical styling.

Other Options to Consider

Instead of resting on their laurels forever, Maxpedition constantly designs new bags with unique materials, new ways of construction, and more futuristic aesthetics. Besides Maxpedition, other brands have come to market with solid bag offerings as well. Below are a few more modern releases worth checking out if you’re on the market for an EDC bag:

 • Maxpedition AGR Riftcore 23LThe Falcon-II’s arguably dated design could be classified as a legacy product. A more modern Maxpedition alternative comes in the Riftcore, part of the brand’s futuristic Advanced Gear Research collection. It’s roughly the same size as the Falcon-II, but with improved design features. A new yoke design makes the pack more ergonomic than ever, while a proprietary laser-cut gear attachment system replaces the clunky MOLLE straps found on the Falcon. (~$145)
 • 5.11 Tactical Rapid Origin5.11’s Rapid Origin pack comes as a lighter-weight, more affordable option. It’s modular inside and out thanks to MOLLE-compatible webbing on the outside, with hook-and-loop lining the interior. It also features an internal water bottle pocket and a dedicated laptop compartment. Last but not least, its quad-zip design makes getting to your gear, no matter where they’re stashed in the pack, quick and easy. (~$68)
 • DSPTCH Day Pack 22LI personally picked this pack to replace my own Pygmy Falcon-II. DSPTCH uses military grade components and construction methods to make quality bags right here in the USA. The bag looks a bit more urban and less tactical, despite the blacked out material. It’s my bag of choice because of the relatively large capacity, dedicated padded laptop compartment, and comfortable shoulder straps and internal organization throughout. (~$198)

Have you carried the Maxpedition Falcon-II? Let us know how it’s worked our for you in the comments. We know that there are tons of choices for a tactical style bag, and we’d love to hear your favorites that aren’t the Falcon below too!

The design is based on one from their back catalog, dating all the way back to 1969. The matte finished case keeps a low profile, while the vintage looking cream-colored luminous paint adds an interesting patina-inspired vibe to the dial. It’s a little more expensive than the other options out there, but it’s one of the most affordable ways to add a mechanical Swiss watch to your collection.

MWC’s (Military Watch Company) Korean War Issue pays homage as a faithful reissue of the watch seen on the wrists of infantrymen in the Korean War. The aged paint on the dial looks the part too. This model has wider, sword-shaped hands that are especially easy to read. There are markings on the dial for seconds and hours, with a 24-hour scale as well. It’s a great looking way to add a lot of time-telling information to the dial without being cluttered. The MWC also features a 24-jewel automatic movement, a 316L stainless steel case, and an impressive 100m of water resistance.

The Military manages to bring both high-end menswear design and military inspiration to a feature-rich field watch. On the cream-colored dial, you’ll find black and red accents. The artwork on the dial was pulled from the 1970’s Timex archives, but placed in a modern case with updated specs. Fans of the Seiko SNK looking for something visually different with similar specs should consider the SNZG15. It’s slightly lightly larger at 42mm and design-wise, it’s closer to a true military field watch as well. 12- and 24-hour time scales are front-and-center on the dial. There’s also an angled rehaut running around the dial with hour and second hashmarks on it that adds some welcomed depth to the dial. Luminous paint on the dial, red accents, and stark white indices make the watch easy to read, day or night. At just over $130, it’s a great value too.

Finding a better value than the titanium Bertucci watches is a tough undertaking. These solid, set-it-and-forget-it quartz watches are built to last. The A-2T Vintage with titanium case is light weight and easy to wear. While the case shape may look a little clunky at first, it sits nicely on the wrist. Small details like the 4 o’clock crown make it go unnoticed during activity since there’s nothing jutting out to dig into your wrist. Inside the watch, there’s a Swiss quartz movement and Swiss luminous paint on the hands and markers sitting under a durable sapphire crystal. The dial is true to military specifications too, further solidifying a spot on this list.

As part of their “Timex Archive Project,” the brand is picking select watches from their extensive catalog and re-issuing them. While the MK1 isn’t a true military watch, it borrows key design features from their popular 1980’s “Camper,” a version of their military watches made for civilians. This new release has a 36mm resin case that’s decked out in OD green. In addition to the case, there’s a green dial and strap to boot. If you’re looking for a monotone watch, the MK1 definitely fits the bill.

Although it’s not a traditional field watch, many military professionals pick G-Shocks as their watch of choice when in the field. It doesn’t come as much of a surprise. These watches are built to withstand the most use and abuse of any watch out there. G-Shock watches undergo extensive testing for durability, drop resistance, water resistance, and many more. This military edition features an all-black color way with a durable Cordura nylon strap. Sticking with the all-black motif is the reverse LCD display, displaying the time in white with the rest of the screen being black. The list would be incomplete without a G-Shock, and this one is as good and affordable as any.

]]>
If you’re in the market for new watch, you’re bound to come across the Seiko SKX lineup of divers in your search, and for good reason. The Seiko SKX (whether it be the classic SKX007, Pepsi-colored SKX009, or similar SKX173) has a long and storied history. Seiko’s first dive watch hit the market in 1965 and gradually underwent changes until 1996. The current version of the watch has been largely unchanged since then, proving itself to be a durable, reliable design for over two decades. It begs the question: does this decades old watch still hold up for modern EDC? Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Seiko SKX series to see if this watch is a truly timeless timepiece, or if there are better watches out there for your EDC.

{embed=”post:23866″}

The Seiko SKX is an ISO 6425-rated dive watch. It’s easy to gloss over this spec, but these few letters and handful of numbers play a significant role in the success of the SKX. In order to pass the specification, a watch must have a minimum of 100m depth rating, a unidirectional bezel with proper markings, a clear and legible dial, magnetic resistance, shock resistance, and a solid strap/band. So by achieving this certification, the SKX proves that it’s both reliable and capable of standing up to some serious use and abuse.

In some cases, the watch exceeds the standard. For example, there’s a day/date display and 200m of water resistance. The watch was (and still is) popular due to a few main reasons. You can snag one for just a hair over $200, so barrier to entry is pretty low considering what you get. Several variations of the watch subtly change the way it looks (such as bezel color, strap options, etc.), so there are plenty of models that appeal to a wide range of tastes.

At the end of the day, it’s a classic looking dive watch that you can throw on a variety of straps and still have it look great. There aren’t any limited editions and they’re readily available both online and in stores.

Is It Worth Buying One Today?

{embed=”post:32513″}

After personally owning the Seiko SKX173 for over seven years, I can confidently say the Seiko SKX is certainly worth buying in 2020. I still reach for mine regularly. I’ve taken mine swimming, worn it on tons of vacations, and even wear it while doing yard work. It’s the watch that I throw on when I don’t want to have to worry about my watch. The watch has proven itself to be reliable after all these years. If you check on eBay, there are still plenty of examples of previous generations of this watch dating back to the 1970s that are still working just fine.

Other Options to Consider

Surges in popularity of dive watches have resulted in more options on the market. If the style of the SKX doesn’t speak to you, there are a few other watches that’ll tick many of the same boxes with a slightly different style:

 • Orient Mako: The Mako shares the same water resistance rating as the Seiko, but has a totally different look. It’s also even more affordable.
 • Seiko SKX013: While it’s still in the same series, this is basically a shrunken down version. Instead of the beefy 42mm steel case, the SKX013 is a more reasonable 37mm wide.
 • Citizen Eco-Drive BN0150-28E: If automatic movements aren’t your thing, consider an Eco-Drive watch from Citizen. This model features a chunkier, more aggressive case style and is powered by ambient lighting.

Managing a clean and functional keychain is hard enough, so if you’re going to add a multi-tool into the mix, it’d better be worth carrying. It should add enough functionality without much bulk and still be convenient and easy to use. Gerber’s iconic Shard one-piece tool ticked all those boxes, making it one of the most popular keychain essentials with EDCers. Their latest solid state tool, the Gerber Mullet, adds even more functionality with a total of 9 tools. Like its name suggests, it works hard and plays hard, channeling the iconic ’80s ‘do with its “business in the front, party in the back” design.

The Gerber Mullet boasts 9 tools throughout its one-piece body, all arranged in an ergonomic way with ease of use in mind. There’s a pry bar/nail puller/wire stripper at one end that has a scraper on its side. The prongs on the pry bar double as small and large flathead drivers in a pinch as well. Moving back towards the other side is a suspension clip that terminates in a 1/4” hex bit driver. Finally, there’s a bottle opener and 3D Phillips head screw driver at the end. With its slim profile, 3/4” width, and 0.7 oz weight, it’s compact but still affords enough room to grip thanks to its 3” total length. You can carry the Mullet by using the included split ring attached to the hole in the center of the body or by using the belt loop portion to suspend the rest of your key setup.

At only ten bucks, the Gerber Mullet is an easy way to spruce up your keychain setup without breaking the bank. And thanks to its TSA-friendly bladeless design, you can carry it just about anywhere. Hit the link below to learn more about this little tool and pick one up for yourself in classic black or a stonewashed silver.

Whether it’s a flashlight, a backup battery, or a pen, cylindrical items aren’t typically the easiest to EDC in your pockets. Not to mention, they’re prone to inconveniently rolling away whenever you set them down. That’s why TEC Accessories bucked the trend of round-barreled pens and opted for a wide and flat rectangular form factor, not unlike your favorite pocket knife. This approach makes the pen sit flat in your pocket, while still being wide enough for a comfortable grip. The Ko-Axis Rail Pen leaves everything you’d come to expect in a pen behind, and the result is something new and exciting.

Upon seeing the rectangular design, you’ll notice that there’s no cap on the Ko-Axis Rail Pen. To extend the D1 refill tip, simply pull on the grip and you’re ready to write. The grip rides on a set of rails that run the length of the pen, retracting the refill into the metal tip when not in use. It’s crafted from a mix of stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and bronze for a pleasant heft without being overbearing. The rails are made from stainless steel for durability, the body pieces from aluminum to cut weight, and the grip from bronze so the heft is centered where you hold the pen. To change out the refill, simply give it a pull, push the new one in, and you’re ready to write. They’ve even fitted it with a deep pocket carry clip so it can go unnoiticed until you really need it.

If you’re bored with carrying around a regular old ballpoint pen, consider giving the Ko-Axis Rail a look. It’s a unique take on a writing instrument that’s just as easy to carry as it is to write with. The Ko-Axis rail is available in several different materials and colorways, including black or red anodized aluminum with steel accents and a warm bronze grip. You can pick one up for yourself for just under $80 at the link below.

Recently picked up the AirPods and Apple Watch Series 4 w/ cellular service. It's very liberating to be able to leave my phone behind. I've been making a conscious effort to spend less time on my phone, and it's definitely working. Apple Pay is popping up more and more, so it's nice to not even have to pull a card out of my wallet. As a mechanical watch fan, it's killing me inside just a little bit, but the convenience and utility of the Apple Watch are impressive.

While the case and dial are usually the focus of your EDC watch, that doesn’t mean you should ignore the strap or bracelet it’s on. The strap actually plays a huge role in the overall look and feel of a watch. So if you’re feeling bored of staring at the same old watch everyday, you can breathe new life into your EDC watch in a matter of seconds with a different strap or bracelet. And swapping in a strap isn’t always just for show, either — a new strap can make your favorite watch more lighter and more comfortable, more secure on your wrist, or better suited for wet conditions. Luckily there are plenty of styles to choose from, and in this guide, we’re highlighting our strongest watch strap recommendations available so far.

Crown and Buckle Supreme NATO

The Supreme NATO from Crown and Buckle really lives up to its name. The weave of the nylon is smooth and comfortable with a woven edge that gives it a unique look. The custom hardware is low-profile but sturdy, and finished with a matte look that suits a ton of different watch styles. Even their color options have that custom feel. For example, their Midnight and Cypress colors are shades apart from your generic navy and green. The culmination of details results in a handsome, durable, and comfortable strap. While they aren’t cheap at $34, they’re a solid investment for your timepiece.

Check It Out

BluShark Original NATO

While there’s no shortage of offerings in the NATO strap category, BluShark stands out for their solid hardware and well-finished nylon straps. A lot of strap companies have several tiers of straps, but BluShark’s Original NATO is probably the best “standard” offering of the bunch. They’re available in dozens of colors with different hardware options too. You’re sure to find a color way that suits the rest of your EDC. For under twenty bucks (or lower as they’re frequently on sale) they represent a good value as well.

Eulit Palma Perlon Strap

Perlon is a style of braided nylon that’s ultra lightweight and comfortable on the wrist. Eulit’s Palma Perlon Strap is one of the best out there because of its premium hardware and thick nylon weave. Another bonus of the Perlon strap is that you can adjust the size to any spot on the strap. Since the buckle threads in between the nylon weave, you get a much more custom fit than you can on straps with preset holes.

Worn and Wound Model 2 Premium

Worn and Wound’s Model 2 Premium strap is made in the USA from the best quality leather out there. They choose their material from Horween Leather and Wickett & Craig—two of the top tanneries in the states. Each strap features double stitch construction near the spring bar attachment for a vintage, handmade look. The edges of the Model 2 Premium are coated with several layers of paint in a complementary color that adds a premium look and improves wear. The soft leather and the gentle taper from lug to end result in a comfortable strap that adds a level of class to any style of watch.

One Star Leather Goods Two Piece Veg Tan Leather

This two-piece leather strap from One Star Leather goods is made from a thick, vegetable-tanned leather. EDCers will appreciate the way this sturdy strap molds to the wrist, becoming more comfortable with wear. Veg-Tan leather starts out very light in color then ages to a beautiful warm brown over time. Each strap is 100% hand made in their LA-based workshop with top-quality materials. Since the watches are made to order, you can specify your preference in stitch color and hardware finish.

Strapcode Bracelet for the Seiko SKX Series

The Seiko SKX series of divers is one of the most popular out there, and for good reason. They’re packed with features like a 200m depth rating, solid steel case, rotating timing bezel, and more. The only thing that leaves something to be desired about the watch is the included rubber strap. That’s where the Strapcode bracelet comes into play. This 3rd party bracelet is built to the same solid specs as the watch itself. There are solid end links for a sturdy feel, and a heavy duty double locking clasp to make sure the watch stays on your wrist. At only $60, it represents a tremendous value that will give your watch a premium look and feel.

View on Amazon

Note: This only fits the Seiko SKX007, SKX173, SKX009 and SKX011. We included it because of the popularity of that watch, and the lack-luster included strap.

Uncle Seiko Tropic Rubber Strap

Inspired by the dive watch straps of the 60’s and 70’s, this Tropic rubber strap from Uncle Seiko combines vintage looks with modern materials. Tropic style straps feature a unique basketweave pattern on the outside of the strap with perforated holes throughout. On the under side of the strap, you’ll find a waffle weave pattern that limits rubber-on-wrist contact for while easily draining water through one of the many holes in the strap. Not only is the strap’s pattern functional, but it also adds a unique textured look to your watch.

Barton Bands Elite Rubber Strap

Barton’s Elite Rubber strap is great for those who like to frequently switch their straps. Its quick release spring bar mechanism on the underside of the strap requires no tools, making the process even easier. It’s hard not to pick up a few of these premium silicone straps just to have options from day to day. They’re available in sixteen different colors in 18, 20, and 22mm widths.

When it comes to consolidating your EDC, you might think the only ways are carrying a multi-tool or an all-in-one pouch. But with school and work back in full swing, now’s a good time to think about consolidating our writing gear, too. A multi-pen like the Uni Jetstream Prime 2&1 just might be the last writing utensil you’d need to carry. It’s a sturdy multi-pen system packed with 2 pens and a mechanical pencil, built into a sleek metal body that’ll look good and last long. When choosing gear to carry essentials as important as your keys, you want something that’s durable, lightweight, and above all, dependable. You might know The James Brand for making sleek knives with these very same qualities. With their new Mehlville carabiner, they’re bringing what they do best to another staple in your EDC kit: your keychain. The Mehlville is a refreshing take on the standard carabiner with useful features and subtle design decisions that EDCers can appreciate.

The clip itself forms two compartments on the top and bottom of the carabiner so it’s easy to keep your gear organized. You’ll also find a stud opposite the gate that functions as a bottle opener. Both the gate pin and bottle opener stud are made from durable 304 stainless steel. The James Brand chose 6063 aluminum as the base material to keep the weight down while maintaining its strength. They’ve then anodized the surface to increase the scratch- and corrosion-resistance to help keep it look as good as it did from day one. Instead of using bent or molded metal, the Mehlville is actually machined from a solid block of aluminum. This process results not only in a sleek fit and finish, but also in a stronger tool overall without the seams or points of weakness you’d get from more common manufacturing methods.

If you’re looking for a stylish and sleek way to keep your keychain setup organized, the Mehlville is an excellent option from a trusted brand in the EDC community. You can add one to your key setup by picking one up at the link below!

If you’ve ever shopped around for a machined pen for EDC, you’ve probably noticed how most of them come in two sizes to accommodate different kinds of refills. It’s an unfortunate tradeoff if you like the feel of the pen in hand, but don’t like how it writes. BigiDesign’s new Ti Click EDC pen is the exception: it’s designed from the ground up to be the most refill-compatible clicky pen out there thanks to its expanding design. But it doesn’t just shapeshift to fit your favorite refill, it’s also packed with EDC-friendly features and unique parts that set it apart from the rest.

The Ti Click EDC achieves its multi-refill compatibility using one of BigiDesign’s best innovations. The tip of the pen features an auto-adjusting collet that grabs onto refills the way the end of a power drill clamps around a bit. This feat of engineering secures the refill within the body so tightly it prevents any wiggle or play when you’re writing for a smoother experience. The namesake titanium body also expands from a compact 4.64” to a comfortable and balanced 5.11” length depending on the refill you put inside. The shorter configuration accepts Parker-style ballpoint refills, while the longer accepts a standard rollerball or gel refill. In addition to the grip collet and expanding body, BigiDesign created their own super-smooth and nearly silent nock mechanism to extend to the refill. You’ll also find a sturdy titanium clip that sits deep in your pocket and some machined grooves around the grip section so you can get a better hold on the pen.

The new Ti Click EDC is available in machined raw, DLC-coated black, or stonewashed Grade-5 titanium. The folks at BigiDesign are no stranger to a Kickstarter launch, with over 20 successful projects and millions of dollars in backings over the past few years, so back with confidence. You can reserve one for yourself via the link below.

With pocket space at a premium, it’s important to get the most out of your multi-tool. Ideally, you want something that’s functional enough to be worth carrying, while still being easy to pocket and use. The TPT Slide, the next generation of BigiDesign’s popular TPT multi-tool, is just that. It rides the line between minimalist and full-on multi-tool, with plenty of useful features that are sure to come in handy on a daily basis. This new and improved titanium pocket tool isn’t just easier to use and carry, but it’s even stronger and more durable, too.

First and foremost, the TPT Slide now features a sliding extension mechanism for the box opener/camp fork insert. The previous version featured a friction fit mechanism that took two hands to open. The Slide has a two position locking thumb stud that’s easy to operate with one hand, whether you’re a lefty or a righty. You’ll also find a sleek, removable pocket clip that makes the tool even easier to carry. BigiDesign also strengthened the jimping on the universal wrench set for a more secure grip. Lastly, the TPT Slide is machined from thicker grade 5 titanium plates for increased overall durability and rigidity. The TPT Slide also has the all of the other useful EDC features from the previous iteration including a flat head screwdriver, 1/4” hex bit driver, simple measurement cues, lanyard/keychain hole, and a scraper edge.

BigiDesign are no newcomers to the Kickstarter scene, with over 20 successful products launched on the platform. This project is already over 1000% funded, with pledges starting at $59 for a September 2018 deliver date. Check out the full list of features and snag one for yourself in your choice of Stonewashed or DLC Black titanium at the link below.
