It’s been a minute since we checked in with our friend Matt and his wonderful workshop of wearables, carryables, and skill toys over at aroundsquare, so it’s right on time to browse what he’s cooked up for his August 2024 drop. This month’s collection features fresh takes on some of his classic fidgetables, including the Podushka Chetki, a rounder, chunkier, and more comfortable version of the traditional Eastern European chetki, in a green sandalwood showing off the wood’s unique grain patterns. There’s also the Deadeye Donut Hollows, an evolution of the hollowed-out Deadeye coin in titanium, introducing more thickness to allow a larger surface area for better handling and manipulation. Last but certainly not least is a reintroduction of the thinner Knucklebone Sliminis in a stunning exotic Zircuti. On the wearables front, my personal favorite MKUltras arrive on thinner 1.2mm cord, with thinner beads in the form of Picos and Micro Barrels, offering a lower profile and oval options from the usual rounder selection.

There are a few more releases and restocks as a part of this drop that Matt goes over in the preview linked below, and as of this writing the majority of the pieces are still available and with an early discount.

In this week’s round-up: Tactile Turn releases their icy seasonal pen, aroundsquare’s January drop includes an “anti puzzle,” our Best Flashlight awardee at SHOT Show 2024 the Nitecore EDC35, CRKT’s Mihacha automatic hides a secret in its scales, and Article One and Mission Workshop team up to create a stylish pair of technical sunnies.

Tactile Turn Scales New Heights With Their Seasonal Release Pen, the Icefall

Tactile Turn’s latest seasonal release pen is the Icefall, named after the Khumbu Icefall on the route to the top of Mount Everest. Functionally, the Icefall indicates Tactile’s increasing mastery of using Cerakote to add a unique visual look to their precision-machined pens. On the Icefall, Tactile has added an ice-like design using Cerakote to their metal Side Click pens. There’s also an optional titanium Damascus pen clip if the ice-blue Cerakoted clip doesn’t do it for you. Functionally, the Cerakote finish adds additional durability and scratch resistance to the Side Click pen, which you can enjoy along with the satisfying clicky mechanism and reliable pen refill used inside.

The best part about the Icefall is that, like Tactile Turn’s other seasonal releases, you only have a limited amount of time to order it. All you have to do is order the Icefall anytime on Tactile Turn’s website before March 28. This approach is an excellent change of pace with the increasing hype around limited releases lately, and it ensures that everyone who wants an Icefall can get one. Whether rounding out a completionist set of Tactile Turn’s seasonal releases or picking this up as your first, the Icefall is a great pen to add to your everyday carry.

aroundsquare’s Latest Drop Introduces Contra, “The Anti-puzzle,” and a New AroundHank

aroundsquare’s monthly menagerie of mindfulness and manipulation tools gets some new additions to its catalog for its January drop, in addition to the usual restocks and material explorations of their regular models. Newcomers include the Contra, “the anti-puzzle,” aptly named because its 1,125 pieces are all uniform, meaning there’s no actual solution, and the puzzle is a canvas of creativity. On the more conventional side of everyday carry is the AroundHank, an update to an original handkerchief design and, in true aroundsquare fashion, comes with exceptional attention to detail with its construction, including a 50gsm weight with double knit construction with a custom printed pattern.

Other notable inclusions in the drop include ebony wood MKUltras and Chetki wearables, exotic zircuti Knucklebones, and glow-in-the-dark POM (Polyoxymethylene, commonly branded as Delrin) Deadeye coins/worry stones. See the full collection in the drop video above and at the link below.

Nitecore’s Latest EDC35 Flashlight Brightens Every Adventure with 5,000 Lumens

As our pick to win Best Flashlight at SHOT Show 2024, the EDC35 is a tactical pocket powerhouse. It shares a lot of characteristics with its smaller brother the EDC33, including custom knurling on the body, a physical lockout switch, and a rotating tail that hides a USB-C charging port for its built-in 6,000mAh battery.

The big difference is with the larger head, which uses an upgraded NiteLab UHi 40 MAX LED from the UHi 20 in the EDC33 that lets it output a more significant 5,000 lumens up to 601 yards on max output, which includes its trademark “Lumin Shield” burst mode. At under 5” and a still-pocketable 6.28 oz, the EDC35 is the perfect upgrade pair to the EDC33 and still a great pick in the 2024 rectangular flashlight meta.

CRKT’s Michaca Automatic Knife Is A Cut Above the Rest

The Michaca is CRKT’s brand-new automatic knife designed by expert knifemaker Phillip Booth. The name Michaca is a combination of Phillip’s hometown of Ithaca and his home state, Michigan. It sports a 3.30” drop point blade made from CPM MagnaCut steel with a bead blast finish, while the natural G10 handle offers excellent grip and features Booth’s signature stripe.

To release the knife, there isn’t a button or switch. Instead, it uses the scales as a release. But not your typical scale release where you push it up by its pivot, the Michaca actuates by the tail end of the knife. You can slide the scale forward using your fingers or the pad of your palm, and it will automatically deploy the blade. It also comes with a generous deep carry pocket clip, and overall, we think this is a new fun auto to add to your collection.

]]>
It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

The fun and fabulous toys by our friends over at aroundsquare are best known for two things: a whole catalog worth of wearables and carryables to choose from, and being able to pick up most everything in that catalog in a range of materials from wood to the most exotic materials and alloys.

For their October drop, they’re cooking up even more material science with a healthy dose of polyetherimide (PEI), otherwise known more popularly as Ultem. To say that it’s made a splash in EDC is an understatement; its unique properties of high strength and rigidity give it exceptional stability even at very high temperatures, making it a sort of superplastic once it’s set. Matt (the founder of aroundsquare) has a great write-up about it in his e-mail announcing the drop.

As for the drop itself, there’s plenty to scope out and scoop up, Ultem or otherwise. Leading the pack are long and shortform “MKUltems,” my personal favorite wearable they offer, which also comes in both a matte machined finish and polished versions. There are Ultem begleris with the new apple-shaped Mílos beads, as well as in the larger Hardcore Titans variant. Last but not least are Ultem options for both the Banzhi ring and several Knucklebones, so there really is a lot in this drop to look out for if you want to get your amber game on.

What we like: Variety is the spice of life, and Ultem is just another great material option if you’re looking for the perfect mindfulness or meditation toy from aroundsquare. Bonus that it’s also particularly distinct in appearance without adding too much to the cost of a product, without any performance drawbacks.

What to watch out for: Some aroundsquare drops can get popular, and given Ultem’s, these could be snatched up quickly. Set those alarms for 7PM Pacific today, Friday the 27th, to get a jump on the release. Also, check out the other inclusions, like a new cashmere sweater and acrylic sets.

Final verdict: Amber is the color of our energy.

Physical movement, no matter how small, can help you loosen up, release stress, and better handle troublesome times. It can even manifest involuntarily, such as when you have the urge to repeatedly click your pen, squish some bubble wrap, or flip your pocket knife open and closed. While it’s always fun to play with the gear we have on us or lying around, some of our gear wasn’t designed for such wear and tear. These fidgety urges are best accommodated with a discreet and dedicated gadget or toy.

Fidget toys are designed to take on the stress of repeated movement and are also a great way to soothe your nerves, calm your mind, and enhance your focus. These little gadgets have also been proven to be a good way to replace unwanted habits like shaking your leg, biting your nails, or cracking your knuckles. Or you can choose to have one on you because it’s fun to play with. Perhaps a fun fidget toy is what you need for a calmer mind and a more relaxed attitude, something important to remember during this time. Check out our picks for the little trinkets you can keep your hands and mind busy to reduce stress and worry during those tough days.

If you’re in a place where you’d rather be more discrete, you can reduce the click sound volume by squeezing them together a bit more when you slide them. How to Choose the Best Fidget Toy

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism can also benefit from using sensory toys. Fidgeting helps them stimulate neural pathways and improve tactile awareness and fine motor skills, which is beneficial for those who have trouble with sensory processing. Many fidget toys also have a history and purpose in mindfulness and meditation.

With that said, not all fidget toys are created equal. With so many variations and kinds of fidget toys, it’s important to note the different features, shapes, and materials used, as well as their respective functions. Here are some key points to consider when looking for a fidget toy that’s right for you or your child.

Function

Fidget toys can be used in several ways, most of which involve hand movements such as spinning, flipping, flicking, sliding, or pressing. Find the one that you feel would hold your interest the most, since maintaining focus is one of a fidget toy’s key benefits.

Noise levels

Most fidget toys are designed to produce clacking, clicking, or sliding sounds as they’re manipulated, which can be extremely pleasant to the user. It’s important to pay special attention to your surroundings, though, as the people nearby may not appreciate hearing these sounds as much as you do. Some fidget toys can be operated silently, allowing you to enjoy them while being considerate to those around you.

Portability

Fidget toys come in different shapes, but are meant to be relatively portable, allowing you to easily pocket them and pick them up when needed. Most fidget toys are highly compact, with the largest ones barely exceeding two inches in length. This is because they’re meant to be operated with one hand, preferably within your palm. Some fidget toys come with special hooks or rings so you can easily attach them to your bag or belt.

Fidget Toy FAQ

What are the best fidget toys for anxiety?

Fidget toys can be a helpful tool for managing anxiety, as they provide great ways to release nervous energy. Some examples of the best fidget toys for anxiety include fidget spinners, which are designed to spin around in your hand; stress balls, which you can squeeze to release tension and ease anxiety; and fidget cubes, which provide a range of sensory experiences, including buttons to push, switches to flip, and balls to roll. They’re small and portable, making them great for on-the-go anxiety relief.

What good are fidget toys?

Fidget toys can provide several benefits, such as reducing anxiety by providing a physical outlet for nervous energy. They can also improve focus for people who have trouble concentrating by helping channel excess energy to minimize distraction. They increase productivity by breaking up the monotony of repetitive tasks to provide a mental break, allowing you to return to work with renewed focus. They promote relaxation by providing a calming sensory experience. Lastly, they are great tools for providing sensory stimulation and regulating sensory input for people with sensory processing issues.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

It’s already been a month since we featured our friends at aroundsquare, a one-stop shop for everything mindfulness, manipulation, fidgeting, and just plain fun, and they’ve just unveiled their February release. In addition to quiet restocks across the board (be sure to browse around), this month introduces a few new interesting products to their ever-growing lineup. We spy:

  • A new Knucklebones model that’s slim, and mini—aptly named the Slimini.
  • A 100% silk Hybrid Rope for those looking into the benefits and fun in rope flow and jump ropes
  • Premium wool vests
  • Delrin bundles like those in the header, which include a fine selection of skill toys and wearables from Begleri to Knucklebones to Remeshok Chetki
  • A bunch of exotic offerings

There’s plenty to see, and even many more to collect, so check out the video below to see what’s in store.

What we like: Even more skill-based and manipulation options to explore.

What to watch out for: Repeating what we mentioned last time—aroundsquare is constantly adding stuff to its catalog but you may find some items not always in stock. Be sure to subscribe to their newsletter at the bottom of their page and their socials to find out when the next drops are coming, especially if you’re after one of the more exotic pieces.

Final verdict: One month is too short to save up for some of our exotic favorites.

It’s a big EDC market out there, and tons of awesome gear is released all the time. We made The Drop to help you discover the latest and greatest essentials worth a spot in your EDC.

Fall deep enough into the fidget toy rabbit hole and you’ll eventually find yourself face-to-face with the premium offerings of Matt Hiebert and his company aroundsquare. Beyond just simple toys to calm one’s self down, he’s built an impressive catalog of tools, accessories, and even wearables that all serve the practical purpose of functional fun. From precision-manufactured skill toys like begleri, Knucklebones, and Deadeye coins to meditation-inspired manipulation accessories like MKUltras and mala beads, they have a comprehensive catalog for everyone looking to aid their focus and fidgety fingers.

But it doesn’t stop there. While aroundsquare is well-versed with materials that would get EDCers interested like wood, copper, and titanium, Matt and his team also produce limited-edition variations of their products. They dive into the deep end of highly exotic materials and alloys like Mokume Gane, Zircuti, and Mokuti, giving collectors some truly remarkable pieces of functional, wearable art.

What we like: These are fidget toys taken to the next level, inspired by traditional manipulation and meditation tools, and manufactured with some of the best materials you can find in EDC. Seriously, it’s hard to find something NOT to like.

What to watch out for: aroundsquare is constantly adding stuff to its catalog but you may find some items not always in stock. Be sure to subscribe to their newsletter at the bottom of their page and their socials to find out when the next drops are coming, especially if you’re after one of the more exotic pieces.

Final verdict: I don’t think I’ll be able to stop at just one MKUltra anytime soon.

From clicking pens to twirling coins around our fingers, we’ve been fidgeting our whole lives, usually without realizing it. We fidget as a way of maintaining focus during deep thought or simply as a form of stress relief. There’s something innately satisfying about audible mechanical clicks and the tactile feel that comes with them. Project Ratchet saw the benefits of a fidget tool that’s both tactile and wearable, with the added bonus of being discreet. After over one and a half years of development involving multiple engineers, manufacturers, and CNC-machined prototypes, the Ratchet Ring was born.

Turn the Ratchet Ring, and it rewards you with just the right amount of resistance, leading up to a satisfying click you can both hear and feel. Project Ratchet has spent countless hours making sure they’ve found the right balance between tactility and discretion, allowing you to play around with it wherever you are, whether in a conference meeting or on the commute home. Its universal-sized dimensions mean you can wear the ring on more than just one finger, which opens up creative ways to use it. At just 2.8mm thin, you won’t have to worry about it snagging on your clothing or getting in the way of daily activities like driving or picking up your coffee mug.

The Ratchet Ring has been machined with extreme precision, with Project Ratchet ensuring that the parts are as tightly fit together as possible, creating the best tactile feeling possible. Crafted entirely in grade 2 titanium, the Ratchet Ring is designed for longevity, no matter how many clicks you put it through. Each ring turn gives back a feeling of mechanical quality, which is rare in other products within the same niche.

We’ve featured fidget toys on the site before, but the Ratchet Ring has the advantage of being wearable, meaning it’s instantly accessible at any time, anywhere. If that appeals to you as much as it does to us, then you can check out their already-funded campaign at the link below.

Carrying a novelty coin inside your pockets is a great way to keep your hands fidgeting all day, and the Copper Moon Coin from Shire Post Mint is a one-of-a-kind item. This coin is made out of 14 grams of solid copper, stamped with both faces of the moon. And since its solid copper, with time, it’ll develop a beautiful patina to further enhance its look. Each coin from Shire Post Mint is struck one at a time using antique techniques, so each coin is literally unique even though they might have the same design. This moon design was made by combining laser-engraving using NASA’s files of the moon’s surface and good old hand-engraving, to bring out its most iconic details. Great for a costume, as a gift, or as a good luck charm—put the moon in your pocket at the link below.

Whether we like it or not, our smartphones have become one of our most-used everyday carry items. In an effort to stay connected and productive during the pandemic, we’re getting so much screentime it can feel overwhelming. Considering many of us work from home too, it’s especially hard to disconnect from the overstimulation of our devices, slow things down, and be more present. Orijin’s Thinking Egg II was designed for restless minds and fidgety hands to carry around and keep you relaxed and grounded throughout the day.

Measuring 23.3mm by 17mm, this tiny egg is easily pocketable and made from robust, natural materials fit for your EDC. Much like a “worry stone,” there are many ways to interact with the Thinking Egg II. If you just like the aesthetics, you can keep it on your desk as a mental refocusing point when you need to take a break. If you’re more of a fidgeter, you can top it over and watch it get back up again thanks to its carefully balanced design. Or if you’re dealing with a lot of stress, you can rub it between your fingers and appreciate the smooth, tactile sensation on your fingertips.

The Thinking Egg is available in many different “elements”, each with their own material and meaning. First, there’s the “Energy” egg. This egg is made out of Crystal Quartz, weighing in at 10.2g. Once thought to be fossilized ice by ancient scholars, Crystal Quartz is meant to promote positive thought while helping you stabilize your environment. Then there’s the “Courage” egg. Weighing 11.3g and made out of Tiger’s Eye, it’s meant to warn against complacency and encourages to think outside the box. It was used by Egyptians as the eyes of their ancient deities, expressing divine vision. The “Clarity” egg is made out of sandstone, weighing in at 9.7g, sporting a beautiful pattern reminiscent of the night sky. Composed of tiny fragments of stone, it’s said to relieve stress and help with clarity of thought. Finally, there’s the “Refinement” egg, made out of Damascus steel. Thanks to its composition, this is the heaviest ouf of all the eggs at 28g. This hand-crafted steel is meant to inspire strength and resilience.

The Kickstarter has been so successful, that a new element was unlocked for the egg via a stretch goal: “Harmony”. This egg is made out of Jade, a precious gemstone. In some cultures, Jade was actually regarded as more valuable than gold. It’s meant to represent luck, intuition and well-being.

If you’re interested, Orijin offers multiple choices for you to choose from, giving you the flexibility to get exactly the eggs that you want or even multiple sets at a discounted price. If you’re still weary about Kickstarter, Orijin has had two other successful campaigns where they actually delivered ahead of schedule. If the Thinking Egg II sounds like you, you can give it a look at the link below.

Fidget cubes were made to improve focus for a lot of people, addressing the need for a harmless distraction for your hands, a way to relieve stress, or for simply passing the time. If you’ve been on the hunt for a similar tool, the Lifidea Aluminum Infinity Cube is an aluminum alloy cube composed of eight smaller, articulated cubes designed to give you plenty of fidget options. You can move them around and make different shapes or fold them back into original cube, hence its “infinity” name. The aluminum alloy gives the cube a solid weight (5.8 oz/165g to be exact), so you’re actually also exercising your fingers while you play, which is useful if you play an instrument or need rehabilitation. It measures 1.57“ on all sides and is small enough to fit comfortably in your hand. You can carry the cube by itself or use the included case as an extra carry option. You can pick between six different colors including black, steel, and gold if you want something more classy, or blue, red and rose gold for a pop of color and a bit more fun. Pick one up at the link below.
